Hi, I'm researching for a friend of mine who is looking for an MTD lawn mower. It HAS to have an automatic transmission (she's stubborn that way). Can anyone tell me if MTD even makes automatic transmissions? If not, can you recommend a brand of lawn mower I should look into for an automatic transmission. This woman is so stubborn, she will not take it unless it has a gas and brake pedal on the right side. She will not be happy otherwise.

MTD does make mowers with automatic transmissions, but I don't know if they are sold under the MTD name. I know Lowe's, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply sell MTD products, and I'm sure there are other stores as well.
MTD also makes mowers under alot of other names, including Troybilt sold at Lowes, lots of store brands. Usually you can look under the seat or hood and it will show the manufacturer. So if she is set on an MTD you can braoden your search.

What mowing speed to use for riding lawn mower?

I have just bought a used lawn mower (Poulan XT 16 hp and 42") with maual transmission and 5 (or 6?) forward speeds. There is no manual from the seller.
So, for mowing, should I use the 3rd or 4th gear?

Depends on how tall and how thick the grass is.....Usually about medium or 1 notch slower will do
