Riding Lawn Mower?

ABBYsMom

I do hope im posting this in the right section. I bought a John Deere riding lawnmower. I hate it!!! from the moment the thing was delivered. I also bought the dump trailer, i hate it to...I bought it to so i can load it with horse poo and i would be able to dump it, to bad i have to shovel it out! Now tomorrow i plan on going to Lowes and telling them to come pick up this piece of (word not allow on answers).
Now my question is what mower should i look at buying? I have a Murray and the thing is well over 10 years old and still running and can out run the John Deere. I have looked at Husqvarna and the Craftman. Would like some help here before i lose my mind....Thanks ") I will be shopping tomorrow and would like to pick a new one up then.
I do use it for mowing and for towing. I have 22 acres. Wanted something to perform both functions.

Answer
I suppose that you're using the small trailer designed to carry 800 lbs. If so when buying your new mower buy a garden tractor series which has the transmission capable of towing that weight. Lawn tractors are able to pull themselves and the rider and that's about it. Yardman (MTD) has a garden tractor series and so do many others. Husqvarna is made by MTD now but I don't remember seeing a garden tractor series. I could be wrong. Craftsman are way too expensive. Sears way of telling their customers that they appreciate their business. Many people have been stung by that John Deere junk so don't feel bad. Nothing manufactured today is what is used to be nor what it should be.

what's is the difference between hydrostatic and regular transmission on riding lawn mowers?

barry_howa

Answer
Basically the hydro has the ability to change directions on a dime without having to stop and manually reverse the tranny. This accounts for better maneuverability and braking power. They provide continual torquing power as well... This excerpt below was taken from hydraulicspneumatics.com and explains the advantages quite well. Here it is......

........The primary function of any hydrostatic transmission (HST) is to accept rotary power from a prime mover (usually an internal combustion engine) having specific operating characteristics and transmit that energy to a load having its own operating characteristics. In the process, the HST generally must regulate speed, torque, power, or, in some cases, direction of rotation. Depending on its configuration, the HST can drive a load from full speed in one direction to full speed in the opposite direction, with infinite variation of speed between the two maximums - all with the prime mover operating at constant speed.

The operating principle of HSTs is simple: a pump, connected to the prime mover, generates flow to drive a hydraulic motor, which is connected to the load. If the displacement of the pump and motor are fixed, the HST simply acts as a gearbox to transmit power from the prime mover to the load. The overwhelming majority of HSTs, however, use a variable-displacement pump, motor, or both - so that speed, torque, or power can be regulated.

HSTs offer many important advantages over other forms of power transmission. Depending on its configuration, an HST:

transmits high power in a compact size
exhibits low inertia
operates efficiently over a wide range of torque-to-speed ratios
maintains controlled speed (even in reverse) regardless of load, within design limits
maintains a preset speed accurately against driving or braking loads
can transmit power from a single prime mover to multiple locations, even if position and orientation of the locations changes
can remain stalled and undamaged under full load at low power loss
does not creep at zero speed
provides faster response than mechanical or electromechanical transmissions of comparable rating, and
can provide dynamic braking.

This Craftsman LT2000 lawn mower will not start.?

Kenny

This guy told asked me to mow his lawn while he went out of town and now when I went up to his house to do so I can't start the mower. It's a craftsman lt2000 and I'm following all the instructions on it perfectly but when I go to turn the ignition, nothing. Not a thing happens. I'm thinking the battery could be dead but I don't know. Please help. :(
The motor does not turn. Nothing happens at all, could it be my battery?

Answer
If nothing is happening, meaning the engine isn't even turning over, make sure you are firmly planted in the seat, the mower deck is disengaged, the transmission is in neutral, and you are firmly pressing down on the brake/clutch pedal. Each one of theese points has a safety switch which will prevent the engine from turning over. If it still wont turn over, then yes, check for a dead battery, and you can jump it with a car, just make sure to hook the cables up correctly and not accidently short the positive jumper cable to the frame when you connect it to the mower, this happes a lot as the spaces around the battery are generally tight. Replaced lawn mower transmission pulley?

TonsofFun

I replaced the pulley on the transmission of my lawn mower to make it go faster since it was just kinda sitting around not doing anything anymore. It goes way faster then it did before, but it will only go fast for maybe 5 minutes or so, then when i try to go fast again it doesn't go nearly as fast. If i wait a long time like over night, then take it out the next day, it works just as good as before....i dont know why this is. any help is appreciated.

Answer
This makes no sense. Only if the engine is overheating it MIGHT be the cause of reduced performance.

I know that all lawn mower engines have a speed governor. You demand power and the throttle opens wide. As the engine RPM's come up, the governor closes the throttle down a little to reduce its power. If the engine should be forced to run overspeed the governor will close the throttle down till the engine comes under control.

I used to have a mini-bike when I was a kid. I hated that governor, so I bypassed it. I disconnected the linkage between it and the carburetor. I then hooked my throttle cable directly to the carburetor and had FULL control over its power. Not satisfied with its power and speed my best friend and I built a supercharger for it. AND IT WORKED. We swore it had more power and speed but it may just have been the psychosomatic affect of BELIEVING it was working better JUST because we did something to it.

The power the engine is capable of generating versus the work you are asking it to do will have an effect on overall performance. If you over-stress the engine you will likely burn it out. Changing the gear ratios is a good way of trial and error testing to find what works best. But there's a limit to how fast it can go.

Be creative; try building an electric bike or go-cart. Electric motors can spin MUCH faster than gasoline engines. The only disadvantage is milage, you won't go as far. I toyed around with the idea when I was a kid but back then I didn't have my engineering degree and solving that problem was beyond me. If ever any of my girls give me a grandson maybe I'll build him one. But that's years away.

G-day.

Where can I find an MTD lawn mower with an automatic transmission?

best lawn mower transmission on John Deere 425 Lawn & Garden Tractor

Josh

Hi, I'm researching for a friend of mine who is looking for an MTD lawn mower. It HAS to have an automatic transmission (she's stubborn that way). Can anyone tell me if MTD even makes automatic transmissions? If not, can you recommend a brand of lawn mower I should look into for an automatic transmission. This woman is so stubborn, she will not take it unless it has a gas and brake pedal on the right side. She will not be happy otherwise.

Answer
MTD does make mowers with automatic transmissions, but I don't know if they are sold under the MTD name. I know Lowe's, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply sell MTD products, and I'm sure there are other stores as well.

MTD also makes mowers under alot of other names, including Troybilt sold at Lowes, lots of store brands. Usually you can look under the seat or hood and it will show the manufacturer. So if she is set on an MTD you can braoden your search.

Hope this helps,

Alan

Can going from foward to reverse and visa versa really fast ruin a hydrostatic lawn mower transmission?

Zachary

Just wondering because I have a John Deere that's new and I'm really carefull, so I don't shift to fast, but if it doesn't do anything, then maybe I'll be a bit snappier. It's just when I do... It just sounds bad, like a RREEEERRRRRR. But I don't know? HELP, I feel like I go really slow because I'm so cautious, and then I think; well why the heck did I get the HYDRO if I'm just as fast on a clutch, the HYDRO's supposed to be faster, but when you do shift fast it's scary, like your gonna ruin your $3100 lawn mower.

Answer
A few things, rule #1 if your hard on your equipment they will be hard on you = repairs, parts etc. so don't shift hard if you don't have too... HYDRO'S are EZ'er to work on you should have an hr. meter for maintenance, and keep the pumps clean, change oil and filters and you can get your money back and bank some too.

How to build a Go Kart from a lawn mower engine or chain saw?

Ben

So i am trying to build a go cart but am not sure what to use for the engine. i have a lawn mower and a chain saw, and i might have some other machinery that have engines. any ideas? i have maybe 200 bucks to throw around for this project
ps. i dont know much about engines and all

Answer
First things first. You cannot use a vertical drive shaft engine in a horizontal application unless you use a transmission. In your case, that would kill the budget. Basically, the lawn mower engine is out of the question.
Next, the chain saw engine will not have enough power to push a go kart. It would suffice on a scooter, however.
Here is what you will need to round up to make this work.
1) Find an old tiller with a fairly good size, horizontal shaft engine. Most of them come with this already so it wont be too hard. Five horsepower will be plenty to get you going.
2) Buy a clutch, sprocket and chain for your drive assembly. The clutch mounts to the engine drive shaft and works off of centripetal force. The sprocket mounts to one of your rear tires and the chain connects the clutch and sprocket together.
You now have the possibility of a running go kart for less than two hundred.

What mowing speed to use for riding lawn mower?

SD

I have just bought a used lawn mower (Poulan XT 16 hp and 42") with maual transmission and 5 (or 6?) forward speeds. There is no manual from the seller.

So, for mowing, should I use the 3rd or 4th gear?

Answer
Depends on how tall and how thick the grass is.....Usually about medium or 1 notch slower will do

Just need to see what seems to work better

How can I manually push my riding lawn mower?

Jim

I have a Snapper Z1802K zero turn riding lawn mower. I has been broken since last summer and I need to repair it. The problem I am having is manually moving it. I released the parking brake, took it out of gear and raised the deck up. But I can move it manually because the transmission still seems engaged. How can I disengage the trans so I can manually push it?

Answer
Contact the manufacturer,.... they would be the best source. They made the thing. They would be the one to consult.

Can you please help me again, riding lawn mower does not work?

Sorry to keep asking ( am new at this and do not know how to reply without ending my question. My Bolens riding lawn mower does not want to start and trans seems to be stuck. Have tried new battery, carb and fuel cleaning, did get it to start when I jumped the slenoid for only a few seconds, lights do not even come on anymore and it did at the beginning of season. I really apprecaite the answers given thus far and there are two that seems to want to help. I am sorry for repeating this question but do not know how to reply without closing the question out. Please any real help would be mostly apprecaited. When it did start it moved a small bit ( hard) then seemed as though it would not go in gear.
572ci. if you could reply again I would most greatly appreicate it, you have been the one that seems to to most helpful. I am not mechaincally inclined but can do some things if explained to me. The swtich does not want to work either ( that is why I jumoed the solenoid ( it worked before) I am not sure where else to check ( oh yeah did check fuse under seat and it seems to be fine ( not blown)
Not sure what I did ( disconnected one set of wires ( two together and runs to a larger group they were white and yellow) took carb filter off and it started up ( but only with taking screw driver to selnoid) It got my grass most of the way cut ( belt broke, go figure lol). When I got thur I reconnected the wires and tried to start still nothing ( unless I do the screw driver thing with the selnoid, even the headlights worked this time). Guess I have to get new selnoid ( whew, at least I can cut my grass ( after fighting to get new belt on). With the filter on carb it did not want to start, without it it seems ok ( guess I have to ask what causes that).
Wanted to say thank you for your patience and time and if you know anything else please tell me.
Thanks a billion for all your help. You have been so nice and great information, 572ci. I would like to tell you there need to be more people that are as helpful as you.

Answer
Ok, it started saying to me, its getting spark, cleaning the carb takes a good soak in a bath type carb cleaner and blow out with carb cleaner, even then you can sometimes not get it. These bolens are a mtd made machine (I'm not a fan of em) and use various transmissions, some variable drives, most are shift on the go's..., could have a slipping belt to little or no fluid in the trans, if it has a hydro, they are picky and need that fluid even worse. Also the engine could have a low oil switch (these are picky as well) make sure the oils to the full mark. It has a new battery, the lights on newer ones should be run off the engines alternator... so it most likely needs to be running, but make sure any and all fuses are not blown. NOW, it is more then likely a over head valve engine, if its catching on the compression stroke any? then have the valves adjusted... but jumping the solenoid sounds like the solenoid could have gone bad or its a kill switch.... these things are even cheaper made today and can go like that.... hope this helps..
and if it has a extended warranty, USE IT!! just to make sure.... pull the kill wire off the ignition coil so switches are disabled, if it starts, pop the plug wire off the plug to kill it. And if it did start, one of the switchs are bad.

Filter was probablly clogged..... reinstall a new briggs original filter. I've had bad experiences with aftermarket...... as for the solenoid, sounds like you do..... they are cheap.. around 12 bucks.... and for the wire... http://www.tulsaenginewarehouse.com/drawings/allwiring.pdf
this is basic wiring, sounds like you probablly pulled the kill wire, unless it started with that wire hooked back up, and filter off. btw, the lights should run when the engines running... also make sure the filter is installed the right way.

what could be wrong with riding lawn mower?

ncconfused

My riding lawn mower does not start, have installed new battery, jumped the selnoid to see if something was wrong on that it ( it started a few seconds, then acted as though it was not getting enough gas to keep it running), checked the starter it seems to be working fine ( took it off and hooked cables to end with a charger to see if it moved and it did). The transmission also seems to be stuck now, ( it moved hard but breifly when I jumped the selnoid. Please no wise cracks about it being broke, I know that much. I live off a small disabilty check and can not afford to take it in to shop nor do I have a way to haul it. Any real help would be appreciated. I also know that I wrote yesterday but apparently did not word it well enough for some. Thanks

Answer
OK, its getting spark, does the solenoid work by itself, no need for jumping across the posts? If not, a universal is cheap.... if it does.... and spins over... its a carb problem anyway.... take the fuel line off at the carb, crimp it and let it go, making sure it has good flow, if so... thats ok, of not, make sure the gas cap is venting, the filter isn't clogged, and on some tanks there is a mesh screen at the outlet... if fuel is getting to it good, check the carb, pull the carb bowl (make sure fuel is shut off!) and take a can off carb cleaner, with the straw on the carb can, blow out any and all holes really good..., as they say, rinse and repeat.... several times... 5 or 6 should do..., this will clear the main jet, it is what provides fuel when its running full throttle..., then move onto the idle mixture up top... blow out any and all holes you can find and see basically really good.... though if you see a good amount of gummed up gas, a tear down and soak in carb cleaner, and a cheap rebuild kit is in order... make sure to use fuel stabilizer!!, though if no gummed gas, it can be a peice of trash just got sucked up in there...

and forgot, as said above, make sure the float, and the inlet needle are not sticking, work em up and down a few times to loosen. As for the trans, you never said what type, manual transaxle to hydro.... manual? the selector could just be stuck.

Should extended warranty be bought for a new riding lawn mower?

best lawn mower transmission on HONDA LAWN MOWER 54414-VA3-P00 SPRING, CLUTCH LEVER HR215 HRB216 ...
best lawn mower transmission image

The manufacturer has a 2 yrs warranty for major components (engine, transmission), and 90 days for everything else. The retailer sells an extended warranty of 2 additional years (i.e., 4 yrs in total) for 10% of the price.

A riding lawn mower is one of the easiest broken down household items?

Answer
I've never seen an extended warranty that was worth the price. Any defects are going to break within the first 90 days. After that, it's up to you to keep up with your regular maintenance. If you do, the parts that are covered by the warranty probably won't break. The parts that do need to be replaced are the parts subject to normal wear and tear, and won't be covered anyway. Hope this helps.

How to fix a riding lawn mower?

ShortStopK

I have a Craftsman 46 24hp riding lawn mower and yesterday I was cutting grass. What happened is that for some reason the handle that controls how fast I go and whether I go forward, backwards, or stay in one spot, went completely loose. Now I can only go forward, but at a very painstakingly slow pace. Anyone have any idea what I should do to fix it? I can't afford for someone to come out and take a look at it.

Answer
The shift lever linkage has come apart somewhere between the lever and transmission. It will probably require that the mower deck be removed and the loose linkage put back in place. It shouldn't be a hard job but you will have to know what you are looking for. If you lived next door I would give you a hand. Maybe you have a handy neighbor.
