My lawn mowers blades are so dull all they do is flatten grass. How do I replace them and what brands do you recommend?

Every coupld of years should do it. Life expectancy of a mower blade depends on how much it is used and what brand you buy. The quality can vary greatly. On average they should last several years. It helps to clean them and oil them.
