How do I go about mowing lawns in my neighborhood this summer?

Head of Ra

Hi, I'm 17 years old and this summer I want to make good money for a trip to Spain with my school next Spring Break (April 2012) which is I think 2,000 dollars (My family is not the richest...)
I already tutor two kids for 20 bucks an hour for one hour so I get 40 bucks every weekend but that's for spending and going out and obviously it doesn't apply during the summer.

My dad said I could mow lawns for a good amount of money, I already did once (for a neighbore, I mow our lawn all the time) and charged 20 bucks and he happily paid me (the lawns in this neighborhood are.... not extremely large, they are decent sized.)

Now my original thought was to just take my mower and just knock house to house and ask if they want their lawn cut and negotiate on the money- smaller lawn smaller pay. I would go to the houses that look like they need mowing and knock on the door, tell people I'm trying to raise money for a school trip, that I have my own mower, and charge like 15 or 20 for the whole lawn and do about 4-5 a day (should only take 4-5 hours, the lawns are decent sized.)

My dad says I should make flyers, knock on everyones door JUST to hand them out and wait for people to call, that I have to convince them why my lawn mowing is better than others, establish a reputation and business. While this all sounds logical to the entrepeneur (which he is), I think this is all unnecessary, I'm not looking for permanent job, I just want to cut lawns every week to make some money.

So what's the approach? Any tips? Is this a good idea?

Any good jobs in the area of Delmar or Albany, NY for landscapers, gardeners or pond builders?

I live in northern Florida. I work as a sub contractor for another firm. My main work is rock walls, stairs, gardens, ponds, etc. I can do planting and clearing, but that's not my specialty. The guy who hired me as a subcontractor always paid well. If it was me and my helper, we got $30-35 per hour. I could pay him $12 and pay myself about $15. I always considered that fair. I have a little used tractor with front end loader, backhoe, mower, etc. I'm paying off a $10,000 loan on this thing still. When that gets added to the job, that's another $35 per hour. Until now...
I can't get more than $20 per hour for the tractor or for our work. I can't do it for that low. I will lose money. My helper isn't going to work for $8 and I'm not going to work for $9 per hour. The bottom fell out hard around here. My house lease is up the end of this month. The landlord wants to know if I'm going to renew. Since February, I've worked my tail off for about $4,500. It all went to rent and tractor payments. My helper is not working anymore for me. Somebody is giving him $9 per hour to work in a lawn and garden store, so that's a better deal. His aunt lives in Delmar, NY, about 15 minutes south of Albany, NY, the capital.
She said we could come up there and stay with her a month or two for free. He's single. I'm married. I'd like to have a kid soon. My wife would like to have a kid tomorrow if it was possible. We can't do it. She works full time for about $8 an hour at Target. That's what they pay after 6 years on the job. My wife could work at a Target in the Albany area and not lose our limited benefits if she transfers. I wouldn't want to stay more than a month taking advantage of someone is not my style.
This is a huge move. Leave all my friends and family behind. This is something like 2,000 miles away. Probably never see anyone of them ever again. A scarey choice. Stay here and just struggle to go broke? Go to a far away place I know nothing about and try to start over. Anybody familiar with the area and could say how good work pays or how much their is? Thanks.
