Help with my lawn mower engine!!!?

Christophe

I have a Craftsman (Briggs & Straton Engine) model # 917.288890 4.75 horsepower push mower. Today I hit a pipe that was burried in my yard. It bent the blade. I tipped it up on its front wheels to remove the blade. When loostening the bolt, the blade turned, and fluid (i believe it was oil and gas mixed) came out of the engine. Alot came out. What do I need to do? Can I just refill the oil and gas and crank it up? I have no experience working on mowers, but have rebuilt several cars, so if it needs work, I know i can do it, i just need to know what to do. Please help.
About how much would the repairs cost to replace the crankshaft?

Answer
From underneath fluid came out? Then yes you more then likely cracked the sump (this engine is a plain bearing engine.... the crank rides on a thick aluminum bearing milled into the sump)
and more then likely bent the crank...

I will tell you right now.... these little briggs engines are a few things.... they are tough, reliable..... but cheaper to replace then fix when something this catastrophic happens... (your looking at a new crank, new sump) and this engine can be bought new for a couple hundred....
Really depends on the damage..... could tell you pretty much what you can do, if I was looking at it....

Now also..... flipping it up on its front wheels can make it leak oil.... and gas..... from pretty much the gas tank, and the oil could back up through the breather, into the carb, into the combustion chamber on out the exhaust.....

is this a really good LAWN MOWER ENGINE?

who invented the gas-powered lawn mower engine?

The Trifor

I udnerstand that the push mower was invented in the 1800's, but I want to know who invented the gas-powered engine that we see in use in today's mowers.

Answer
The engine we see on lawn mowers today wasn't exactly invented. It evolved from motorcycle, marine and small stationary engines that have been in use since the beginning of the twentieth century. Mervyn Richardson didn't invent an engine, he built an engine powered rotary mower copied from a similar machine that was built by Lawrence Hall in 1948. Hall used a marine engine on his mower. Richardson's first machine was powered by a Villiers engine and Villiers started production of their small engines for other uses in 1911.

Comparing engine size in lawn mowers?

Chocolate

In terms of power, gas consumption, or any other considerations, is the difference between a model with 149 cc engine versus another with 190 cc very significant?
The 149 cc is $200; the 190 cc is $240. (US dollars).

Answer
The size engine on a lawn mower is based on the blade length more than anything else. The most common 149cc mower engine is a Kohler Courage, an efficient over-head valve engine used on 20 or 21 inch mowers. It comes in 3.8 and 4.8 HP versions. The most common 190cc mower engine is a Briggs and Stratton Quantum. It is an older design that used to be rated at 6.5hp, and now is just rated at 6.75 ft-pounds of torque. Being larger it is more often used on 21 or 22 inch mowers.

The 190cc will use more fuel, but will also cut more lawn with each swath. Gas mileage on mowers is not usually an issue, but the OHV Kohler should be marginally more efficient. The main consideration is the maintenance you do. Keeping the air filter clean and changing the engine oil periodically will lengthen the life of either mower choice.

I hope this helps.

How do you run a lawn mower engine off a bench?

best lawn mower engines on Determine Which Ride on Lawn Mower is Best for You

Since lawn mower engines have aluminum flywheels the blade acts as the flywheel. In other words they are not meant to be ran under no load conditions. What can I put on the vertical engine shaft when its mounted to a bench for tuning so that it can run steadily? Is it just weight that it needs or the length of the blade to provide the momentum?

Answer
the easiest way to make it run steadily is to take the cover off of the engine and move the magneto away from the flywheel they are made to be adjustable so you can slide the magnet closer or farther away to tune it in depending on the application. You do not need to weight the shaft or add a load, it will run fine if you can dial in the magnet, which shouldnt take more than 3 or 4 try's to get it right, just start moving it away from the flywheel about the thickness of a business card each time until it runs right.

How can I flush diesel fuel out of a gasoline lawn mower engine?

bkcrum

Is it possible to flush out diesel fuel in a gasoline lawn mower engine without buying a new lawn mower?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Answer
Yes you can do it! You didn't say if it's a push or a rider, either way it's simple! If you have a push mower first remove the air filter, tip the mower over (with a bucket under to catch the diesel) getting as much out as possable. Some engine oil will run out that's why you removed the air filter to keep oil out of the element. Refill the tank with fresh gasoline. You may have to use a starting fluid (sparingly) to counteract the diesel in the carb, but it will start. run the tank dry and you should be over the crisis of diesel fuel. Oh don't forget to replace the clean air filter!

How exactly do lawn mower engines work?

Q. I am trying to build a beefed up go kart and I have a lawn mower engine that I can use but lawn mower engines are vertical driven and a go kart is usually driven with a horizontal mount. How do I make the conversion, should I just use a gear box? Also how do the governors work, my budy build one with an old 5hp briggs and stratton and he tore the governor off why did he do this? any ideas?...thanx guys.

Answer
You can buy a gear box to run a vertical shaft engine, but it is probably cheaper to buy a horizontal shaft engine than to try to convert it.

The governor is in place on a lawn mower for 2 reasons -

(1) when you're using the lawn mower, its not practical to keep a hand on the throttle, but the mower needs to operate at different throttle openings to work efficiently. The governor senses load on the engine and reduces or increases throttle opening as needed.
(2) if you were to just run it wide open, you would overheat the engine and reduce the life of it. Also, the maximum speed has to be governed because the blade is only safe to a certain RPM.

On a go cart, you can regulate the throttle manually (in fact, you want to). The governor is not required, and because you are changing the load, you don't really have to worry about over revving the motor to the point that things break.

ps - if the engine came off a riding mower, you might already have a gearbox. If its from a push mower - I would check the price of horizontal shaft units first, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Answer
Oh, come on! If you want to tune a mower engine put it together as a mower. Actually, it should run fine without a blade if the other parts are clean and the carb is running right. It should just idle. I guess the only thing this answer is missing is "You dumbass!!"
