Can you start a riding lawn mower by going down a hill, then popping the clutch?

Q. if i cant get my mower to start, can i ride it down a hill with the clutch depressed, then release? will that start it?

I'm not aware of any riding mowers that have a clutch (like a car). But if by some small chance that you do have a clutch, yes provided the problem is in your starting system and not your fuel or ignition system. Generally though, the transmission gearing is so high that damage to the drive train could occur, you could take a tumble over the mower or the wheels will skid and not turn the engine over.

Lawn mower emitting huge clouds of white smoke?

Q. So yesterday I was trying to mow up the hills on my lawn

( I have a hilly lawn)

and the lawn mower would all of a sudden start dying on my almost as if it was being choked by long grass

( there wasn't any long grass to choke it)

and emitting huge white clouds of smoke from the muffler I believe

(I'm not sure if it is the muffler, its the thing on the side of the mower by the primer with the holes in it)

The lawn mower sat outside all winter last season with the same oil in it.
The lawn mower seems to mow just fine on level ground, its just when it is going up hill with the engine drive that it will start dying and emitting the smoke.

I have a full tank of gas.

Most 4-cycle engines are designed to function on up to a 11 to 14 percent grade. If your lawn is very hilly, your probably trying to run the mower at too steep an incline and oil is getting forced into the cylinder.

Perhaps you should get a 2 cycle mower, like a lawn boy. 2 cycle engines can operate at any angle, even upside down, without harm, or decrease in function.

Lawn mower for a hill?

Q. There's a lake behind my parent's house and the back portion of the lawn slopes down into it. My father has trouble reaching the farthest part of the grass by the water. What kind of lawn mower should he use?

Id suggest a weedwacker - you dont want to be driving a tractor or using a push mower by the water ( too muddy) .

I'm thinking about buying a manual or reel mower for this summer. My yard's not that big for starters and I like the idea of a quiet mower. I do have a small hill in the backyard though and I'm wondering how this will work on that hill? WIll it give a smooth, even cut?

As long as you can walk up and down the hill and control the lawnmower then it will work just beautifully on the hill. Just imagine what a wonderful contribution you're making to the environment by not using electricity or fossil fuels to power a piece of equipment.

How best to approach a hill with a gas lawn mower?

Part of a lawn I have to mow is on a hill, more precisely a fairly steep short berm. I notice that my gas lawn mower (toro brand, 4 stroke engine) has problems with it and tends to eventually stall and definitely burns more oil. Changing the landscaping to not-lawn is not an option. I am wondering if there are differences if I approach the hill sideways or better from top or bottom? Sorry if that is a stupid question but I am pretty clueless about gas engines in general.

Hi, tigrillen. Not a stupid question at all. Two things, one being the mower.

Some old Toros actually had an oil pump in the engine, while their standard mowers these days do not. On a steep slope, the new ones may have some oiling issues as a result. I used to keep an older Lawn Boy with a two-stroke running just for this issue. Lacking that option, you might even consider using a line trimmer to keep things neat, rather than a mower (gets pretty good with practice).

Second thing is that approach with a mower. If the slope is steep enough to potentially roll the mower when trying to go across the slope ("traversing"), have to just go up and down. Then the issue is not slipping when coming down and getting your foot under the mower deck. (A relative is missing a couple of toes from doing that.) Don't mow damp turf (i.e., avoid a lawn "water slide"), wear good shoes, and stay a little off to one side. And keep kids and pets well away while doing this.

riding lawn mower?

How many HP do you guys suggest for a riding mower to cut a 1/2 acre of lawn,the yard has alot of rolling hills with a few fairly steep climbs.I was thinking Husqvarna,what do you think?

Husqvarna makes the Craftsman mowers. MTD makes Cub, White, Troy-Built, Yard man, Yard Machines, Bolens, and the new Toro tractors. The John Deeres in Lowes and Home Depot are made to last 250 hours and be tossed. That is all the "discount" brands.

If you are looking for a mower go to a dealer, even if its John Deere. The dealer can service the machine after the sale. Most will even deliver for free. They know the machines and the feature that will work for your conditions and situation in your yard. You are going to talk to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about, and not someone who will be in paint tomorrow.

I would recommend a Snapper of a Simplicity. Simplicity has a mower called the Regent that is 18 HP with a 38" deck, and sells for $1999. You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

When adjusting the belt the bracket that you tighten to hold it in place does not hold well. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I am not sure what Snapper model you have. If you mean the one where you tighten the 5/16 bolt that goes through a circular clamp then sometimes you need to use a back up wrench on the backside of the bolt. I use a pry bar to adjust the frame to where I want it and then tighten it good. The hardend bolts work the best for this, through the clamp. I have a few of the older Snappers and they do loosen at times, I find that it is if I mow on the hills a lot and make a lot of turn on them.

Years ago I tweaked my back snowboarding like 17 years ago i was ok thought I broke my back but I WAS ok. Now today I was pushing a lawn mower up a hill and my foot slipped causing me to lunge forward in an awkward position it hurt a bit no pop just a weird feeling. Now the top of my legs or quads are numbish I feel out of balance I may have broken my back just today without even realizing it?

I personally doubt that you broke your back if that's the case you wouldn't be able to move at all you legs or depending in the area where its broken not at all. I do think you should get that check that because even thought it might not be broken maybe its pressing some nerves which is causing the numbness or maybe even a little fracture, Just go to your doctor as soon as you can and have him check it out, do some x rays or MRI or whatever its needed.

How do I clear out my garden and start from scratch?

I live on the hill and have a long driveway. At the top, I have a retaining wall that's about 3 and a half feet high. Past the wall, the garden is at about a 45 degree angle for about six feet (~20 feet across), then the ground levels out into my yard/grass. The garden is completely overgrown with weeds, poison ivy, etc. Normally I would just take the lawn mower to it and mow everything down, but due to the angle, I won't be able to easily get at it with a lawn mower.
I can't seem to figure out what the best way to attack it is. I don't want to just dive in and start pulling because I'll be up to my elbows in poison ivy, spiders and possible snakes.

Any ideas would be helpful.
Suggestions beyond hiring someone to do it. Thanks.

I'd borrow a couple goats from the neighbors and let them have at it for a week or two, then do a cut and fill terrace and solarize.

No goats? Apply a good layer of poison ivy barrier cream like Ivy Block or Onguard to all exposed skin. Wearing long sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, and with a sweat rag tied around your forehead if it's a warm day, start at the driveway with loppers and work across, bundling the materials for composting. DO NOT BURN PI!!! It can, however, be safely composted.

Then continue with cut and fill and solarization. Intermediate retaining walls may be needed.

How does a self propelled push mower work?

I have a huge yard and out of financial need I push mow my yard. It takes me 6 hours almost on a good day. This morning at 6:10 AM sharp, I was mowing. The neighbors look at me like I am nuts. I will probably buy a self propelled mower and a riding mower after I get out of debt next summer.
I have to say, my yard looks beautiful after I am done. I live on a corner on a hill, so I have to push mow a giagantic amount of hill out here. Its probably close to about 10 feet tall.
Would a self propelled lawn mower help me get the job done next summer? How does it work.

Self-propelled rotary lawn mowers require the operator to squeeze a bar to engage the mower, which causes the machine to take off -- all you have to do is control the direction in which it goes. If you release your grip on the bar, the mower blade stops spinning. For the higher-end self-propelled rotary mowers, the drive system does not shut off when you release the bar â a convenient feature, in case youâd like to transport the lawn mower from point A to point B without cutting grass along the way.

Why does my riding lawn mower always get stuck or not move at all?

I have a craftsman lawn mower 13.5 horsepower.. it works and all but when I put it into gear it moves real slow, gets stuck on any little 1 inch hill, or it just doesn't move. I have to keep moving the gear back n forth to move and it still moves really slow. A mechanic said it might have something to do with the transmission.. so what can be wrong with it? Thank you. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Some where on the back there should be a small metal lever sticking out of the back. It will move in or out and have a cleives pin holding it. This is a lever to switch the trans into a "free wheel" setting allowing you to push the mower with out pushing against the motor. Make sure this is in gear.

I am wanting to use wheelchair motors to pull a remote control lawn mower up hills and through ditches. I bought a used wheelchair and even drove it around to make sure the motors worked before I took it all apart. Electric motors normally have a positive and negative power input. However, these motors have two small white wires also. What are they for? And, do I need to use them for anything?

It could be for a shaft brake. You would energize the two white wires and an internal solenoid would pull back a brake pad or lock pin and allow the shaft to turn. This would keep the wheelchair from moving further once the user stops it or releases the control.

What will increase the traction on my lawn mower drive plate/drive wheel connection?

I have rear engine Snapper riding lawn mower and had got grease or oil on my drive plate. I cleaned it off with gasoline really good but the drive disk/wheel still seems to be losing traction when I go in reverse or up a hill. What can I clean the drive plate with to increase the drive disk to drive plate traction?
