there are loads of Australian products, ranging from billabong surf wear, thongs ugg-boots, drizabone work wear,we also produce the victa lawn mower, the hills hoist, the duell flush toilet cistern, the Holden commodore, and probably the most commen Aussie product Vegemite! we also produce the boomerang ( a hunting device used by aboriginals) we produce some of the best opals in the world (from mines in cooperpedy in south aus) the black box data recorder (there is a black box in every plane (it is now illegal not to have one) we have also produced the first bionic ear!

How many days/weeks should I wait to cut new grass?

How long does it take to see growth AND how long should I wait to cut the grass after it starts growing?

I am not quite sure about your neck of the woods Penny. In most cases lawns take time to establish their root system. I would wait until the lawn is no less than 5 to 6 inches long or there abouts which should at least take 6 to 8 weeks to grow to that height. The first cut should only be a trim to 3 inches or so. If you cut your lawns too short it will rip out the root system or damage the root system.

Are you using a ride on or push motor mower, hand mower or electric one. What ever make sure when cutting the wheels don't dig into the newly laid turf or was this lawn sown and grown from scratch. I suppose you are entering your Spring as we are about to enter our Winter here in Australia. Good to see that you are getting into your garden mate as I have been doing some Autumn cleaning up around the place.

Australia: Can anyone recommend a good lawn mower 'edger'?

Just a middle-range one, not particularly expensive.
Preferably one you actually use that is good.
Aka a 'whipper snipper' or lawn 'trimmer' or something - I DON'T KNOW... just looking for a good brand name

I have a "Little Wonder" which were/are put out by MTD; a large Mower etc Dealer. Were made in USA and plenty of parts available if you need but rarely have any trouble. If you need it to cut back edges along paths etc it's the best one I have used, better the VICTA and most other edgers. I have 620ft of edging (in my old language) to do every now and then. Easy to use and a cinch to maintain. If you're looking for a Whipper Snipper go for a "Styll" brand and don't waste your money on the cheaper brands that are available in Bunnings and the like. Talk to a trusted mower repair shop proprietor if you know of one, as they can normally in all honesty, can tell you what brands they recommend and what cheaper brands to stay away from as most aren't repairable etc. Be careful if you're looking for an electric 240vAC one as they are in my mind not worth the bother of having to run out 50ft of lead etc, they are also too dangerous in my mind as an Electrician as you can cut the power lead easily and that adds a risk to life if you don't have an earth leakage circuit breaker or similar to save you from bigger problems, even so these electric ones are in some cases claimed to be "Double Insulated" etc. I personally wouldn't take the risk having seen some of "their" Double Insulated methods.

Recommendations for a small riding lawn mower, simple yet sturdy?

Q. First time homeowner and have a big yard to take care of, so I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a small riding lawn mower that's simple to operate, but sturdy? Believe me, if a push one was good enought, I'd be asking about that, but with my hours during "season", I won't have the time, so any help would be greatly appreciated! One of the most important things to look for in a ride on lawn mower is power. I have often seen people buy the smallest, cutest, cheapest mower only for it to burn out and die sometimes after one season. When you buy a ride on check to see it has enough power to carry you and mow the lawn with ease not just 'enough' power. Having said this you can get too large for your requirements and buy one that is so large it has the turning circle of a semi trailer. I would look at good brands with reputable motors, such as Briggs and Stratton or Honda. Most large brands such as John Deere have a full range of sizes from small to very large. Do your homework with the local dealers and get plenty of advice. Some dealers even offer test drives. Also let them know what type of grass/ height etc you are mowing and the finish you would like - bowling green, park or bush. If you are in Australia Cox or John Deere are good choices. If you are in another county you will have to check out what is available there.

I have recntly purchased a 1905 home in Melbournes Dandenong Ranges in Victoria Australia. I'm currently renovating the house , in a classic traditional style and I want the garden to match. Any thoughts/ideas/ on plant types or style/design tips?

The underlying theme of the Victorian garden, as in much of Victorian life in general, was man's conquest over the elements. Nothing exemplifies this so much as the lawn. A front and rear lawn were considered imperative in a formal garden. The push mower, for more modest lawns, was patented during Victoria's reign.
The previous eras had cottage gardens. This was a garden for the household's use so it contained a lot of medicinal and food plants in as little space as possible. This meant no grand views but a lot of scrap or twig trellises to hold sprawling plants from taking to much ground. Nothing was planned but all was meant for utility.

Trees were also used to frame the carriage drive or approach to the house. In the city, trees were often planted along the street to aid in privacy. This was the era of exploration and discovery in plants so specimen trees with unusual shape or color were popular.
Garden ornaments were very popular. Increasing technology made made ornaments more available and affordable. Cast iron, glass gazing balls, and concrete. Concrete was made into fences, fountains and buildings, often with fantastic detail. A bird bath might look just like a tree stump when made from precast stone.

Carpet bedding, the use of same-height flora, was popular. Most often used to depict a motif or design such as a clock or badge. Old-fashioned plants typical of grandmother's garden cottage garden, such as hollyhocks, sunflowers, daylilies, sweet-williams, blood-red peonies, poppies, nasturtiums, larkspurs, snapdragons, and pansies were out of style. These were replaced in Victorian gardens with large and bold foliage plants such as castor beans, cannas, dahlias, lilies, and ornamental grasses.
Bedding plants included ageratum, celosia, convolvulus, four o'clock, geranium, portulaca, salvia, sweet alyssum, gladiolus, petunia, and begonias.
Foundation plantings are more modern in concept.
The great vegetable gardens of the Victorian era gave us items such as glass cucumber straighteners, rhubarb forcers, cloches and unusual garden tools, all interesting additions to the potager or potting shed.
Then there were the gardening vicars. They bred many of our modern cultivars.
