average lawn mowing rate?

I live in Indiana and want to mow some yards around the neighborhood but don't know how much to charge....I will be using my own mower and gas. What is the starting rate for a small or a large yard? What do others pay or get paid?

Get what the market will bear.I charge the following.

1) small $30.00
2) medium $40.00
3) Large $60.00 to $75.00

I'm in the bizz and do get a little more than the others but it's my loyality and dedication that gets me that.I do have self propelled mowers and riders.

If your just doing this for a weekly part time income 1) $25.00 2) $30.00 3) Maybe $40.00.Don't give your work away,a tidy profit helps.

there are electric and gas driven mowers . i have had both and find in a larger yard the gas one is better . a cord can be qiute cumbersom to carry around . right now we are just using a gas weed eater and that has done the trick for us , as our grass has been dormant in this heat . hope this helps you and enjoy your day .

Well my folks owns an apartment building that has about half an acre (I'd say) worth of grass surrounding it....we went an got a self propelled lawn mower from Lowes nothing too fancy no John deer or anything I live in alaska mind you and so we only cut grass for a few times each month for a few months then it all about the SNOW.

I don't want to mess up the grade of the lawn as it is near the front porch area. Problem with planting around it: There is already a planting area 2' around the trunk and the exposed root runs above the soil for about 5-6 feet from the trunk, thus very close to the front walk making a increased flowerbed not desireable.

Tough one. I have heard you should not cover exposed roots or trunk with dirt. It could cause rot. A professional arborist told me this. For some trees this is just the way they grow. I have a huge ash in my yard. At one time I was thinking of planting flowers around it. My plan was to incorporate the exposed root system into the design so as not to cover the roots. I think it would have made an interesting design. Didn't do it 'cause I have decided to move.

Murray is not sold under the mtd name... mtd owns mtd, and makes mtd.... murray is practically out of buisness and owned by briggs and stratton (great engine maker) sears mowers are not made by mtd, they are made by ayp (american yard products) they are owned by electrolux and make husqvarna.

A 4 stroke has of course, 4 strokes. The connecting rod and piston makes 4 strokes in the engine... intake, compression, power and exhaust... 2 cycles are not found on riding mowers, because 4 cycle engines are more powerful.

There's snapper, simplicity, dixon, grasshopper, husqvarna and sears to consider.... also exmark.
All great brands....


Would like to add, mtd is the cheap throw away brand, like murray, and don't last long with hard use. www.mtdproducts.com for all the mtd brands.

Can you recommend a brand and model of a riding lawn mower that is safe, dependable and has a smooth ride. We have a large yard (2 acres) and my husband has had a back injury.

We have a tractor but need a riding lawn mower to cut grass around the house. Which tractor will hold up with heavy use and be comfortable to operate.

According to the first link below, the John Deere X304 is the best lawn tractor overall.

Second link is price...seems pretty typical though this particular model isn't at Lowe's. Didn't look at Home Depot.

We got an old, second hand Craftsman from a customer. That rider was used on MANY big lawns while hubby had his lawn maintenance business. It was used for 5-6 years before it quit. I wish it was still working!

Speaking only for myself, I'd look into a Craftsman. I'm not fond of Sears, but I loved riding it and miss her sorely as we now have 3 acres!

What is the widest cutting width you can purchase in a walk behind, self propelled, mulching mower and which manufacturer makes it?

Self propelled, as you mentioned, is a big thing with me. Also, the horsepower of the engine. I wouldn't buy anything less than a 4.5 hp, and prefer at least a 6.5. I have had best luck with mowers having Briggs & Stratton engines. Also, the larger the swath of the mower, the less trips around the yard you have to make. Buy at least a 22-24 in. mower. If you have a yard on a slope, or an uneven yard, mowers with larger rear wheels may be better suited to your needs.

Im 14 years old and am looking to start a lawn mowing buisness this spring. Although, i have no idea what kind of lawn mower to get (push, ride on, etc.) as well as what brand to get. Also how much should i charge per lawn? Last thing, whatelse besides lawn mowing should i offer to clients?

A riding lawnmower will do larger yards faster, but you have to consider how to get it to your job site. If you live in a city and the lots are small, go with a push mower because you can get closer to fences and around trees. You might also want to offer trim hedges. You could consider doing evergreen trees shaping them, if you can find some to practice on.
