lawn mower for putting green.HELP!?

Darren

okay.my parents have decided to let me get a putting green for my backyard because we have the right soil etc and it will be relitivly in-expensive.but they are not paying hundreds for a putting green mower that will cut it at the correct hight.
i understand that you need a cylinder mower and not a rotary.i have looked at some basic cylinder mowers that are in-expensive but the problem is that they only cut down as far as 10mm.i need it to cut down to 4-6 mm for it to be the correct length.

so.im wondering,if you take the wheels off the mower (which cuts at 10mm)and put on smaller wheels..then it would be lower and cut at a lower hight..would that work?
need feedback.
Thanks!

How to start a small Lawn Care Business?

Kevin C

Hey there, I'm currently in college and am looking to start up a small lawn care business next summer. I've been working at Mcdonalds the past 2 years and won't be able to stand another summer in that place. Anyways, I've already got a truck and trailer and push mower and weedeater, so I need help picking out a mower. I'd probably look into zero turns but the prices seem pretty steep, even used. And I'm not sure about a regular riding mower, if itd be fast/efficient enough. I'd be mowing mainly large home gardens and maybe small pastures. I definatly dont have more than a grand to drop on a mower to start off with. What's a good mower I should start looking for and pricerange? Also is there anything that I might not be aware of yet? Anybody with some experience in this, help me out please, Thanks

Answer
Kevin start small and build up leave riding mowers and zero turn mowers alone .

Best advice i can give is to google your question and there is a lot of information out there read and adapt what suits you i had a look to many to link and if did you might not look at another one which would have been very handy. the main theme is start with what you have how not to get screwed another word not paid for your labour and tells what equipment to use etc.

What is the machine that gardeners use called?

Q. What is the machine that they use on the border of the grass and concrete? It's a tiny lawn mower kind of thing with a circular blade in it and it makes a scraping noise when it hits the concrete. It's very annoying and I'd like to know what it is called and what the purpose of it is. Thanks!

Answer
An edger?

An edger (also known as a lawn edger or stick edger) is a garden tool used to cleanly separate a lawn from a walkway or other paved surface, such as a concrete sidewalk or asphalt path. Edgers may be manual or automated, typically employing a small two-stroke gasoline motor or an electric motor. Use of an edger defines a clear separation between the lawn and the walkway, imparting a finished appearance that is neater than can be achieved by merely mowing over the border of the lawn and walkway (which frequently permits tufts of low-growing grass to hang over onto the walkway, resulting in an irregular or ragged appearance).

What's an efficient way to get rid of yard weeds?

Deborah

I have a big yard that's full of weeds, some of them with points on them. I always use a hand weed wacker but it takes hours upon hours to get it to look halfway decent. I don't have the room or the money to buy a lawn mower. What do you recommend that's a small and efficient appliance to maintain this yard?

Answer
To get rid of weeds in your front yard you may want to spray them with Roundup. This herbicide kills all plants, so don't let it drift onto plants or lawn that you want to keep. There is no easy way to get rid of weeds organically. You will probably need to hoe or pull them up. A tip: it is easier to pull weeds when the soil is slightly moist. Before you plant the garden, prepare the soil for planting and water it. Allow it to sit unplanted for a couple of weeks so weed seeds can germinate and be cleared before you plant. Another method to use it to cover the soil with heavy plastic for 1 - 2 months to solarize it. This can kill diseases, insects and some seeds. Using mulch also cuts down on weeds. You can use a rototiller to get rid of the weeds, but that potentially may create more of them in the long run. Rototilling will bring up weed seeds buried in the soil and it chops up roots into multiple pieces, some of which can sprout.

Is it okay to clean out a lawn mower's air filter using water?

I checked the air filter, and it was clogged up with dirt. So, I washed it using a garden hose. It's now drying in our shop. Can I reuse this filter? Or do I need to just get a new one?

Answer
Just about all small engines like mowers, weed whackers, snow blowers etc... have a sponge like air filter. The filter can be rinsed or even washed with soap and water for reuse. It is advised, once the filter is dry, before replacing it is to moisten it with a bit of clean, light oil, like 3 in one or mineral oil. This will help the filter to last longer as well as making it more effective at trapping particles.

You just need to apply a few drops to the filter then give it a few wringings to get the whole filter a light oily feel, kind of like your hands after eating buttered toast.

Will small peach tree survive after being hit with lawn mower?

ethan

The peach tree is really small and I didn't realize until too late that I ran it over with a mower. Will the tree live? It's basically like a little stick coming out of the ground that is split down the middle now.

Answer
It might--if the root stock is intact, it may regenerate. Use some duct tape or twine and tie the two halves back together and water it well--and put a small garden fence around the tree so you don't run over it again. If it dies, replant with another tree. But give it time--it won't show new growth immediately.

Is compost worth making? What's the best way to make it? Anything you should not put in it?

I live in a small city, but on a double lot, so I have a lot of grass clippings and leaves in the fall. I mulch the grass back into the lawn most of the year, but in the fall I chop up the leaves with the lawn mower first to reduce the bulk, then mow again with a bag to pick everything up. I know enough to add some dirt to the pile as I build it, to accelerate the decomposition. Is there anything else I should be doing? I've tried adding kitchen scraps (no meat, of course), but there were signs that rats were getting attracted. How do I avoid that? Just keep to lawn clippings and garden waste?

Answer
Compost is literally liquid gold. It's absolutely fantastic for your garden. I found the following article from HGTV to be really helpful... good luck!

How do I know what weight oil to use in a particular small engine? I no longer have the owner's manual.?

Ron P

I have a mower, garden tractor, generator and snow blower.

Answer
Hmmmm. There's alot of incorrect info being given to this point. MTD stands for Modern Tool and Die. Although MTD has bought up alot of other brands, Murray is not one of them.

Lawn tractors all use 4 stroke motors in them, as do most snowblowers, lawn mowers and generators. There are the odd exceptions but those are few and far between. If there is a crankcase for oil to go into, then the engine is definitely a 4 stroke. As several people have already suggested, 30 weight motor oil is the first choice for air cooled engines in outdoor power equipment. However, straight grades of motor oil are getting a bit harder to find these days so you can also use a multi-grade oil such as 15W40, 20W40 or 20W50 in everything except the snowblower. I would use 10W30 or 5W30 in that engine because it is only used during cold weather and that particular multigrade will help it spin over a bit easier in sub-zero temps. My personal preference is Shell's Rotella T oil but any direct equivelant is fine. Just make sure you change the oil every 25 hours hours MAX and keep the oil level filled to the line inbetween changees.
