Is it OKAY to use a rear bagging LAWN MOWER to remove leaves from my yard (lots of them!!)?

~

I'd like to just mow over them and collect it in the bag. Will this harm my mower in any way?

Answer
yes its a great idea, I have done it many times myself. One small point set the cutter blades on high and I assume your lawn mower is a rotory mower as it will rely on the suction from the blade to lift the leaves into the bag.It would not work with a cylinder mower so well.

I have a 6hp murry lawn mower which has a plunger on the side of carb. to prime eng. but it's not getting hard

George M

before the prime knob would get hard being filled with gas but now it feels empty and I can't get it to fill up and I guess may also be the reason that the motor won't stat running but for a second after putting tiny bit of gas in thraot of carb. ??? thanks...........

Answer
yea u need to check ur gas lines to make sure their not cracked, check the bulb because u may not have to replace it, and check carb gasket... if their are any signs of cracking in any of em, replace them... whats happening is somewhere air is getting in and displacing the gas, not allowing for a good suction...

Lawn vacuums?

Max B

Does anyone own a lawn vacuum, the type that looks like a push mower? How well do they work at picking up acorns from grass? I've heard that they have a hard time picking up leaves from anything other than concrete. What has been your experience. I need something to pickup oak leaves and acorns from my yard.

Answer
The success of a vacuum depends on the amount of the suction. The more leaves that are trapped in the head or hose, the less pull you are going to have. Also, the pull of the vacuum is best on light things that have a good surface area. As a result, you probably wouldn't get the results you want on acorns.

In my days in commercial landscaping, we never used a lawn vac. We either used a backpack blower or a push blower that looks like a vacuum cleaner. That was done for a few reasons.

Getting the area clean in the more efficient time was always key. Vacuums hardly ever fill their bags totally. This means that you have to stop multiple times, take the bag off, dump or bag it, put the bag on, and repeat the process.

When you use a blower, you can sweep across an entire side of a yard into a central area. Depending on how large a pile you want and how big a yard is, you could get the leaves into one pile. If you use a blower, you can direct a wind of over 100 mph onto an acorn. It will definitely along into the pile. If it doesn't, a vacuum wouldn't done it.

What is wrong with my riding lawn mower?

DH

I have a polan pro riding lawn mower and it starts up fine but then in about 5-10 min it slows down so much that it shuts off gradually so when i drive it shuts off. What should i change/check/fix? any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
My lawnmower is doing that, too. I need a new gas cap because the gasket fell out, turns out the gasket has a valve in it that lets the gas tank breathe. When it doesn't, it creates a suction that stops the gas flow. For now, I've got to loosen and retighten it about every 2-3 minutes, just about when it starts to 'cough'.

How do I fix the suction in my irrigation pump?

I have a pump just for my irrigation system. It had a pipe sticking above the ground, which got hit by a lawnmower. I had the tp of the pipe fixed, whats next? Do I prime the pump? If so how, it looks like a closed circuit for the sprinklers. Please help!

Answer
I suspect you may have air in the line after the pipe breakage by the lawn mower. The pump likely will need re-primed to remove this air so the pump can work properly again. I'm getting the impression the pump may be inaccessible. If this is the case you may reopen the repaired end of the pipe you fixed and pour as much water as you can into it and replace again and turn the pump on this may get it re-primed enough to start pumping properly again. If you can get at the pump , look for a rounded casing which would hold the impeller or blades which spin to pump the water. When you find this look on top for a removable plug to prime the pump, fill with water and replace. A garden hose would be ideal for this if one is available but a bucket of water will do. It may take a try or 2 but should work for you. Also many newer pumps are self-priming pumps so it may take a few minutes of running time for it to begin working normally again if it didn't start right away after the pipe repair.

What is the best way to clean pool?

Ted

I just bought a house with a pool and learning how to maintain it myself. What is the best device to clean the pool. Suction or robotic?

Answer
Just the old fashion way.... Hooking up a hand brush cleaner on a 18 foot pole that is hooked up by a hose to the skimmer. You do it by hand running the brush cleaner on the pool bottom in rows almost like a walk behind lawn mower (so you don't miss any spots) you do it in consistent rows. Works good (but a little tedious) and you got to do it every few days. Also you need a screen hand skimmer on a 12-15 foot pole that lets you remove bugs and leaves from the water surface.
And make sure your pump is adequate. Meaning if its too old it may not do the job right. Also, if you have a tiny hole in the fixed skimmer piping you won't have adequate suction in the skimmer. Check and make sure there are no leaks in the pipes that lead to the pump. If there are leaks but you can't see the pipes because they are buried you have to dig them up to replace them (If its an in-ground pool). The pump needs to be back washed regularly to remove all the goo that accumulates in the filter. Usually once a week does the trick. Add chlorine daily at approximately the same time of day and check your pH regularly too. The water will get cloudy when your pH is out.
Also, when you first start to maintain the pool there is normal cloudiness that eventually goes away after a few days to a few weeks. This is caused by the initial spike of chlorine and the death of millions of microbes (that you can't see) that have grown in there. Eventually the filter will siphon them out but you got to do back washes almost daily to eliminate them from the pump.
Its a lot of work and its why some people (who have a lot of money) just hire a pool geek to maintain it all season long. Make sure you have pH kit to test the water and also a Chlorine kit to test the levels of chlorine that you are running.

I had put them in the recycling bin but they refused to take them.

Answer
Hmm... perhaps clean the bathtub mat, then cut it out into cute shapes and have your kid decorate them, so your kid can stick the shapes on her/his bedroom window or car window. Assuming the mat has suction cups.

How long should I wait before my initial mowing of a new sod lawn?

marlio

Answer
Mow a newly installed sod lawn approximately 10 days from the time of installation. Do not use a riding mower. Roots should be established at least ¼" in length before the first cutting. If you start to bring the sod off the ground from the suction of your mower, you have tried too soon. Stop and wait a few more days.

Lawn mower starts but will not run?

best lawn mower suction on Gas Powered Sweepers, the Power Sweeper | Best Lawn Sweeper

David

I have an older mower. When attempting to start it will start but will not continue to run unless I repeatedly press the primer bulb. As soon as I quit, it no longer gets fuel and cuts out. Even when pressing the primer bulb, sometimes fuel will shoot into carburetor sometimes not. The carburetor sits atop the fuel tank. What do I need to replace? Please, to all the asses, do not waste time by saying buy a new mower.

Answer
This could be one of a dozen different problems. It could be:

-Bad gas. How old is the gas in the mower? Does it smell sweet? If so, drain it and refill with fresh gas.

-Blocked Fuel Line. The gas tank on mowers tends to pick up crud and grass clippings. Did any get sucked into the fuel line? If so, take the tank off, flush it out, and replace (or thoroughly clean) the hose.

-Hole or crack in the fuel line or primer bulb. This would allow air to get drawn into the fuel delivery lines, and lose the syphon/suction need to keep the fuel flowing into the carb. Fix by replacing or patching the broken part.

-Dirty carburetor. Crud from the gas tank inevitably makes its way into the carburetor. You'll need to take the carburetor off and clean it out. This is like performing surgery, so it helps to have a manual or instructions. It's also advisable to buy a rebuild kit and replace and bad/dirty parts or gaskets. Once you get it all back together, you should put a fuel filter inline to keep the carb clean. It's easier to replace a filter than to tear the carb down.

-Stuck choke or throttle. Disconnect the cables from the linkages on the carb and work them by hand. Try a few different positions while starting it. If the cable's rusted, just use some wire to hold the linkages into a position where the engine runs. I'd play with the linkages first before you start taking things apart.

-Clogged air filter. Maybe the filter is blocked and the carb can't breathe. Take the filter out, and slap it off a wall or blow backwards through it with compressed air to clean it. I wouldn't run the mower without an air filter because you will definitely draw trimmings into the air intakes.

Or, you could just buy a new mower. :)
