What is the best lawn mower for under $300?

I want a pull start, rear propelled and gas mower that doesn't cost too much. Can any of you suggest any brands that you've have had good luck with??? If anyone know of any great on-line deals for mowers, I would like to know that too....

I have a Lawn Boy that's 10 years old, and still starts on the 2nd. pull. I don't know how much they cost today, but it was $259 new. Why buy on-line and pay shipping? Watch your local stores for sales, or the classified for used.

Buy a used mower. You'll pay half or less of the original cost new. Go to the biggest general lawn and garden machine dealer in your area and kick the tires, and/or check out local ads, including Craigslist.
Once there, it should at least start. Maintenance or a tune up after that is pretty easy.

Why did my self propelled lawn mower stop being self propelled?

Our craftsman 22 inch self propelled lawn mower stopped being self propelled. The cable from the handle to the transmission is slack now,no tension on the cable. I think its an easy fix but don't know where to start.Looking under the mower I don't see anything disconnected. I removed the cover on the pulley assembly and other than some grass nothing obvious there. Is there some sort of tensioner missing? Really don't want to spend 300 for another mower as the engine on this is great,never takes more than a few pulls to start and this is a 7 year old mower.

More than likely the clutch spring broke. unplug the spark plug wire, turn the gas off and tip the mower over you will find the clutch spring either hanging there broken or it will be missing altogether.

they cost about $1.50 and aren't too hard to replace. They are extremely tight though so spreading the coils by hand to reinstall it is not an option.. you have to use vise grips and open the spring then insert small pieces of metal (like cut off pieces of a tuna can top) in between several of the coils to get them open, install the spring and then with a needle nose pliers pull the metal pieces out of the coil.

it's a pain but it can be done relatively quickly.

Good Deal on lawn mower ?

We have a riding mower that wont start, tried everything from a new battery to a new spark plug to trying to jump it with a car.. and we have a non self propelled lawmower that it a pain in the butt.. Does anyone know where I can get a good deal on a ridding or self propelled lawn mower? Or have any suggestions on good brands. We have 2 lots and it take forever! Thank.

I just bought one today from Lowes under $300. Although it's an electric start (no cords), gas, self-propelled lawn mower, they have lots of nice riding-mowers too.

Of course, they always have the plan where you buy on credit and not pay for 12 months. It's great!

what are some cheap putting green lawn mowers?

im planning to build a putting green in my backyard this spring. Im going to use bent grass, and I need a mower. definitely looking to spend under 300$ for the mower.

Because it needs mowing everyday at 250 mm (3/16) you will need a greens mower with a heavy steel drum roller and grass catcher. It's a very expensive mower. Start calling golf courses to see if any have used ones for sale. Also call John Deere and Toro for refurbished lease greens mowers.
