how do you mow a lawn whith a push mower?

Josh

Answer
if you are talking about the old style "reel" mowers then the other 3 are correct,, if you are talking about the motorized push mowers then the other 3 are idiots,,,,,, if you don't start the mower first you are going to be a L O N G T I M E cutting that grass.

push lawn mower?

derf

when i go to start the mower i tilt the deck up to free the blades of the grass below so it will pull easier and about a 1/2 cup of gas comes out the carb and the mower is only a yr old and kept put up yr round and i use it once a week its a honda motor
whats the problem any ideas
i dont pick up the deck to much just slighty and i have tryed not topping off the tank and i have also turned the gas off between uses

Answer
The problems sounds like the float valve in the carburetor. You should be able to tip the mower and not get gas out of the carburetor. I would get a rebuild kit for the carb. Take the carb off and take it apart and clean it. Put it back together with the rebuild kit. It will have new gaskets and the float valve.

how fast can you cut a lawn with 2 push mowers?

Q. my brother and i are thinking about doing a lawn service this summer... he wants to but the big ride mower and go fast but they cost about 2000 $ and i dont want to spend that kind of money im thinking of a second push mower... how fast can you cut a yard with 2 push mowers.

Answer
I don't think you'll make the $2,000 or profit for that matter by mowing lawns... unless you do huge lawns and charge good money. It depends on the size of the yard. If you have 2 push mowers, you'll get good exercise and be able to mow an average size yard in 20 minutes. It all depends if you know what you're doing or not.

Good luck on making money!

Hand Push Lawn Mower - Should I buy one?

I hate mowing the lawn - hate it, hate it, hate it! A friend recently suggested that I should try a hand push lawn mower, to remind me of a simpler time and because it might actually do a better job on my lawn too.

Any hand lawn mowers out there available to give me some advice?

Answer
I personally prefer hand push lawn mowers to electric hover mowers. I feel more pride in my lawn once it's done, knowing that I've achieved that with what I'd consider simpler and more traditional tools. With that said, its not for those who are afraid of a little exercise as it can be hard work.

Ideally you want a mower with a 20" frame as it cuts down on the effort you have to put in and gives the best results on your lawn (in my experience).

Have a look at the Scotts 2000 model (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RA3E?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00004RA3E) - this one in particular has good quality parts, unlike cheaper models I've tried in the past, that will give you good results first time and will last as long as you do!

You'll also be saving money on electricity/gas, which is always a good thing.

Happy mowing!

My Lawn Boy mower barely fills the bag before I need to stop and empty, any suggestions?

best lawn push mower on Height adjustable out of Lawn mowers buy the best price from ...
best lawn push mower image

Christophe

I bought a Lawn Boy 20" push mower from Home Depot last year to replace my old one finally died. This mower is terrible. My main problem is that, unless the grass barely needs to be cut, the clipping exhaust port clogs up and the thing starts dropping most all clippings with an almost empty bag. The bag has never made it more than about half full. Is there anything I can do to improve this (new blade?) or is it just a crappy mower?

Answer
Make sure the blade was installed right side up for one if the mower is new. I would bet that this is the problem.

How old should my son be before I let him cut the lawn? Both riding and push mowers?

conshy3

My son is 6, but a big 6. He can reach the pedals on the riding mower and is tall enough to use the push mower. He is really excited to mow the lawn and I know he would do a good job, I am just worried he is too young. So long as he is not physically hurting himself, should I allow my son to cut the grass?

Answer
Hey, I started mowing the lawn around his age, and I'm a girl! My dad said "Listen, you are big enough to start helping." The first few times I did it he stayed outside and made sure I was doing it right. He showed me how to prime it (it was a push mower) how to start it, and how to add gas. After about a month of supervision, he let me do it on my own. I felt good for helping and it made me feel like a big kid. Just make sure he wears tennis shoes, NO SANDALS! And show him how to do it for the first few times.

What are some of the best reel push mowers available?

Matthew

I have a couple of lawns lined up to cut. I want a push mower for the exercise and the fact that I won't have to pay for gasoline. I've just heard that some of them don't cut very well no matter how much muscle you put into it. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
I'm in the market for one too. We bought one second-hand to check things out and get a real feel for this type of mower. Here's what we learned. Most reel push mowers are good to maintain short grass, which is no good if you want to control weeds. I want my lawn to be 3+ inch high. When the product specs say you'll need to sharpen once a season, it means 2-4 times a season. The blades on our Great States mower were sharpened before our first mow and after mowing three times, the ends of the blades of grass looked riped (and our lawn is small - 1200 sq ft). If you're obsessive about having your lawn cut evenly (like me), you'll get your cardio workout in by mowing your lawn (and it still might not end up even- argh!). My approach to mowing the lawn is I don't mind mowing 3 times a week, if I only have to do it for 10 minutes each time; but the results have to be clean and even.
The main thing to remember is if your lawn is level everywhere (ie no pot-holes anywhere) and free of hidden rocks and twigs, you can consider a manual reel mower. But if it's not, then you'll either have to fix it or restrict yourself to the more expensive manual reel mowers. However, don't confuse price with quality: we thought that a Brill was the top of the line. Not so. First figure out what kind of lawn you have and the kind you'd like to have and maintain, and what you're willing to put up with, then choose the best mower for you.
After some research, I've decided that the Fiskars Momentum is the one for me. Problem is, it's not cheap. Lowes has them at the cheapest price around: $200. Or maybe I'll go for the Scott reel mower for $130. Which boils the question down to: will I be irritated at myself the next four years for saving $70 on the initial price of the mower? How much do I value 4 years of peace of mind, little to no sharpening of the blades and an easier mowing job for an evenly cut lawn? Kind of a biased question, I know.
You might decide to do like we did and check craigslist for a second hand mower to figure out what you like and what your lawn is like to mow. Then, when you're ready to get "the one", go for it and sell old one again on craigslist for a slightly lower price than what you paid for. Turned out to be a pretty cheap "rental" for us.

I need a replacement handle for my Scott's Reel Lawn Push Mower?

best lawn push mower image

Christle A

While mowing the yard today, my daughter broke the handles off our push mower. Its the old fashioned push mower thats about 4 years old. Instead of buying a whole new mower I want to price out just new handles but have been unsuccessful in my search. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Try http://www.mrmowerparts.com/. I have ordered from them in the past. You can call and see if they have your part

What type of lawn mower do you recommend?

EJ

I am preparing to purchase my first lawn mower. I am looking for a push mower (also known as a walk-behind). The grass in my yard grows very quickly, so I would like something that will last a while and not wear out quickly.
I have heard good things about the snapper company and was thinking I might get one of their mowers.
Do you know anything about snapper or do you have other recommendations?

Answer
Best brands from personal experience -

1. Snapper
2. Toro
3. John Deere
4. Honda

No matter which you buy make sure the dealer has a good parts & service department. Don't buy from a big box store or you'll regret it when/if you ever need service. Even if they carry the brand you want, they're not the same models offered by "real" power equipment dealers.

What kind of lawn mower should I get?

AM86

I'm moving into a new home that has a lawn. Its an average sized lawn that isn't too big at all. This is my first time having to maintain a lawn and I was wondering what type of lawn mower I should get? Which is better? I've been shopping around and I've been seeing gas or electric. I'm leaning more towards a push mower but just unsure about brands, features, and gas or electric.

Answer
For a push mower I would look at a Toro. Definitely a gas mower is preferable. You dont have to worry about finding an electrical outlet and you get more power. I would get a model that is self propelling unless you love a lot of hard work. If you want more information on picking one look in the May or June issue of Consumer Reports Magazine (free in a library or you can subscribe on line for a fee). They rate lawn mowers and their features. You can find a good mower for $300- $350
