Do you service your lawn mower and sharpen the blade at the end of the season or in the spring?

Q. Are you using a mulching lawn mower, or are you still bagging the cuttings?

Answer
I was always told by the old men at the hardware store in my city that all good tools would last nearly a lifetime if they were cleaned properly after each use. So, always did that....and my children were glad to get all my gardening and other tools when I sold my house....they had all been top quality tools when I bought them, and I cleaned and oiled them after each use.

So, I think you should clean & service your lawn mower at the end of the season.

I liked bagging the cuttings. Would edge the lawn first...then blow all the edgings into the lawn. Then I would run the mower over the lawn....and have very little to "blow" later....as the mower picked up all the edging debris that had been blown into the lawn. I liked having the grass clippings to take to a large compost area in my back yard....where I was like an old witch brewing up my "special compost".

I think leaving the clippings in the lawn leads to poor aeration of the soil....creates a thatched barrier prone to mold as it decomposes. Just my opinion.

3 point hitch, plows, disc, and tires for small lawn and garden tractors?

dennis_phi

I have 20 acres of land behind my house I can use for gardening and small livestock, such as chickens and rabbits. I am a welder by trade and I want to build a 3 point hitch for a 12 HP lawn mower to plow a large garden. I can do the fabracation but I would like to buy the plows and the disc and build the racks for them.
Does any one know where I could buy them and what size I should get?
The mower has 18" x 9.5" on 8" rims. I have enough room to put tires on it up to 24" X whatever, and I can cut the hub off the ones I have now and fab up hubs to fit the axles. Any ideas on where to get the tractor lugged type tires at a good price.
I am disabled and the check is very big so I need the cheapest things I can find that will work.
Hope some one out there can lead me in the rigth direction.
Thanks for the help.
I thank you all for your answers, but it doesn't seem anyone understood the question.
I understand the chance of tranny failure. I am or was a small engine mechanic for several years. I also know how to not punish it too much. I may plow only an inch per pass until I get what I want, and even if I do break it, I only paid $150 for it to start with and can replace it with a a used 18 HP lawn and garden for $300.00.
I admit that a tiller will do a lot better job than a disc, after it has been plowed and I very well may build me an attachment to hook a tiller up to the mower if the disc doesn't work, but I have used disc on a larger tractor in the past, after it was turned and it did well.
As far as the amount of land I want to work, last years garden was about twice the size of the first years. The only thing that slowed me up was being able to till as much as I wanted to.
I need to know where to get what I need at the best price I can get it at.
Thanks for the replies.

Answer
There should be some old farms around. They should have some of those old 2 and 3 bottom plows you can pick up cheap. I know we have 4 of the old ones on the farm here. Some PTO and some not.
