lawn mower problems?

carol k

i have riding lawn mower and starter kicks out and turns motor one turn then stops..i hooked starter to a charger and it will keep running fine so i dont think its the starter..what should i do next

Answer
If the battery test good and all of the connections are good 12 volt source, check the valves in both overhead valve or in block style valve. Meaning, an overhead valve has a head with valves in it that you can take off, push rods, and adjustable rocker arms ( the valves are not contained with in the block). You should also check them on a valve inblock style on some series and brands ( ex. if it is like a k series Kohler they have adjustable tappets in them that have a clearance that needs to be set). I forgot to mention this style of motor contain the valve in the engine block You can tell by the head just being flat and just having spark plug hole and no moving parts in it. If it is a valve in block style or overhead, and all other conditions are met valves set properly,no electrical problems. This could maybe have a compression release problem. There is a spring and a lift pin on the camshaft that releases compression from the piston chamber. It is on the cam shaft and through cintrifigal force allows weights through turning rpm to move a pin and in turn allow the valve to go to the open position allowing compression to leak down and not dead head while starting so it can be turned over easier. After the engine starts the weights fall back in and the release is no longer holding the valve open and the valve tran operates normally. Usually if you put a charger on it will start fine. With this problem the starter has unlimited amperage ( whatever the charger is usually 300-600 amps if it a big one) to turn that motor over. Most mower batterys will carry a lot less cold cranking amps. Just remember that testing your cables can be tricky checking them with an ohm meter is a bad reading because if just one strand of the cable is touching you will get a good reading. Check the draw of the starter with an inductive pickup to see how many amps it is pulling if it is pulling just a few it is cable and connections or starter prob. If it is pulling a lot could be starter problems or it could be a compression problem because the starter is having to work double time to try and turn that motor since the cylinder is building up full compression. I have had the compression release in many cases cause a customer to buy a new starter, cables, and switch when he didn't need em. He put it on and it didn't make a difference. I am into diagnosing not spendin money. Hope I helped you diagnose it and I explained it so you could understand p.s Just dont want you to spend money on something you dont' need!

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.

what is the best kind of lawn mower for under $300?

zonk

Answer
It depends on how large your cutting area is.
1- If you can cut it in under two hours, get an electric.
(I took extra good care of mine and it lasted 4 years).
I got lucky and someone abandoned one that was wired wrong but newish, fixed it and it lasted 5 years.
2- Both were Black & Decker and first one cost $89.95 in 1993.
3- Of course you'll need one or two long extension cords (again I had two roll-up spools), one was 200 feet and one was 100 feet long.
I had 2 gas mowers, one was self propelled (both cheap brands), one blew the engine and the other threw a rod and oiled part of the lawn.
4- You'll have to buy Oil, Gas, and drygas for the wiinter months and still need to take good care of it, (keep it covered, sheltered and change the oil periodiclly)

Lawn mower loud bang?

I buy lawn mower on craigslist for 500 dollar, brand is weed eater, it has 3hp tecumseh engine, it make loud bang after 5 minute of use and i dont know why. it also shoot fire out muffler and then stop. any answer appreciate many time. gracias

Answer
You paid $500 dollars for a used lawn mower. you can buy a brand new one at sears for 300?
Your probably paid for a $500 pos that was broken in the first place. Yet at this point you became a sucker, not only did you buy as is, You can't get your money back the Guy you bought it from, he just has to say it ran fine when he sold it to you.

Lesson here do your home work first, check prices at stores for the same brand before purchase
You could have got the same lawn mower brand new for less? Why would you buy a product that you have no history of? Now your out 500 plus cost for repairs or outright replacement.

Hope that helps

Can anyone recommend a cordless electric lawn mower? I am trying to spend less than $300.?

Jared N

Answer
I purchased an elecric lawn mower last year after a bit of online research. There are several things you will want to consider:

Cordless or with a cord: The cordless is less entangled but may be $100 more costly and may be a bit heavier. I went with the cord which I already had. If you don't you will need to purchase a good one (12 guage)to reach to the ends of your yard. The cord may cost $100.00

How wide do you need? A wider model 20" will be heavier than a more narrow model (18") but you may have to make fewer passes.

A bag? If you are going to get a bag for it then the best configuration is for it to be rear bagging. My lawnmower came with a mulching plug, a bag and can be configured for side discharge.

If you don't get a bag you might want to consider a mulching mower. It chops the grass up and leaves it on the lawn. I use mine to chop up leaves in the fall as well.

I want a pull start, rear propelled and gas mower that doesn't cost too much. Can any of you suggest any brands that you've have had good luck with??? If anyone know of any great on-line deals for mowers, I would like to know that too....

Answer
I have a Lawn Boy that's 10 years old, and still starts on the 2nd. pull. I don't know how much they cost today, but it was $259 new. Why buy on-line and pay shipping? Watch your local stores for sales, or the classified for used.

What kind of oil do I put in my Briggs and Stratton 300 series push lawn mower?

Melanie

My lawn mower won't start. There was a spider's nest in the spark plug cap, which I removed. My fiance put in SAE-25 car engine oil, and he put in too much. He took out some oil and it still won't start. After some research I discovered that we need to put in SAE-30 (about 1/2 quart). Any ideas?

Answer
25-30 is ok I take it it has been sitting around a while drain any gas shove a rag down in the gas tank if necessary put fresh gas in turn switch on if it has one, choke and try to start
here is a site for repair if it doesn't start

How do I get my riding lawn mower ready for spring?

cocoabeach

My riding lawn mower is pretty old. It was stored in a garage with radiant floor heating this winter and I had put stabilizer in the fuel the last time I used it. Nothing else was done. What do I have to do to get it ready to start cutting grass?

Answer
Well, start by changing the oil (use 20w-50) & filter (if it has one), placing fresh gas in it, giving the blade(s) a good sharpening. Take the air cleaner off and clean the air filter. take the spark plug(s) out and clean or replace them.Take the battery cables off and cleaning the ends with a wire brush. Take a very good look at the belts and note the part #'s of each, as there may be a good chance of needing a replacement at some point during the cutting season. Do the same with the tires and make sure the pressure is the same in each one. Use a can of white lithium grease on the mechanical deck levers, steering mechanism and anything that use a grease gun on anything that has a zerk fitting. Check any drive gear oil(s) and top them off or change them. (some machines use 75W-90 gear oil)

This same service would ordinarily cost you around $300 so do it yourself and save that cash!
happy cutting....
