I am a yard person who's in-law is a farmer. Believe it or not, he states that CORNMEAL placed in a spreader works like a natural fungicide in the soil. Beer breaks down thatch because the barley with sunlight decomposes any layer of material that gets in the way of watering. A mulching mower will increase nitrogen in your yard due to the break down of grass clippings. These are cheap and inexpensive techniques you can do, and turn your yard around quickly. The only other item to suggest is to get a bag of rich soil and aerate your yard, water, water, water this should give a good response. I cannot speak to the patches, it could be a fungus, insects or a soil imbalance. You should get a soil sample done by a yard service, so they can tell you the reasons for the lawn patches instead of guessing.

Can a pickup truck get better fuel mileage with a huge load in the bed than without?

My husband, who is EXTREMELY mechanically inclined by the way, just informed me that he is going to start riding around all the time with a 1,000 pound load in the bed of the truck. Because, he says, he got better fuel economy hauling his old F-150 across the state than he did the last time we made the trip without a load. Right now he has his lawn mower in the bed, and he says the ride is smoother and we are once again getting better MPG than we normally do. I agree about the smoother ride, but the MPG makes zero sense to me.
Is it possible?

First there is a custom Joke for this situation:
According to your husband he should feel more energetic and less tired if he were to carry you on his shoulders during the next marathon event.

You do not mention the truck he is driving or the fuel it uses (gasoline vs diesel) so an assumption or two has to be made.

Smooth ride: Basically the truck is probably equipped with a heavy duty suspension which has little give because the springs are built for heavy load carrying. Therefore unless its full of turnips it is going to ride like a buckboard.

MPG. Aerodynamics as mentioned above is the best explanation available, the other factor may be that if its a vehicle with low gearing again for heavy loads and or towing then the extra weight does not impinge on the mpg factor, this would be very viable explanation for a diesel truck. Diesels are less sensitive to weight changes compared to gasoline engines. Vehicles that are geared with high gear ratios (for economy) are more likely to respond negatively to load changes such as extra weight, wind resistance etc etc. Low geared vehicles have a power buffer built in making them less sensitive to load factors.

Hope that helps, but I do like the idea of seeing him run a marathon with you on his shoulders, I bet you two will make headlines all across the globe! we just got our very first lawn mower and we dont know how to use it. we turn the key and nothing happens. there are places for u to unscrew a cap and it leads to know where but inside the engine. and i also dont know how to cut the grass. do you just run over it?

Do you have the Black and Decker (electric) OR the Craftsman (gas).

Both require turning the key lifting the lever the Craftsman also requires you hold the lever while pulling the cord. The B&D needs to have the battery charged the Craftsman needs gas !

To cut the lawn.. Never cut it lower then 2 1/2 inches in the cooler weather and let it go to 3" in the warmer weather. This will keep moisture in the lawn so you don't have to water as much. Never cut more then 1/3 of the height of the lawn.

Normally you make a straight path then on the way back split the path in 1/2 with just mowed and then next strip. Doing the 1/2 split insures the errant grass gets clipped and stray grass sucked into the bag. Alternate how you mow each time north to south one time east to west the next (or diagonally). Alternating the path will prevent graining.

Every other time let the clippings go on the lawn rather then the bag this will add needed nitrogen to the lawn as it decomposes.

Never cut a wet lawn.

Start the mower on the driveway or another rock free flat area.

Cut the lawn when the sun isn't going to fry you Early AM or Late afternoon.

Always clean gunk out of the bottom of the mower before storing.

Walk at a normal pace behind the mower and don't let it run in one spot without moving it.

Don't drive over tree stumps or rocks or toys or the neighbors cat it pits the blade and then your grass gets shreaded.

Keep little kids 10 feet away if the come closer turn off the mower.

Always mow forward never ever never backward.

Wear crappy sturdy shoes.

Have copious amounts of beer or icetea available on warmer days.

Don't feed the lawnmower after midnight.

Sharpen the blade once a year (more often if you drive over the neighbors cat) don't put it back on backwards.

Never leave it running if you are going even a foot away from it. The lever...Called the deadmans lever will stop the mower when you let go..make sure you pull the key.

If this is the electric model store the battery seperate from the mower.

Multiple mexicans doing yard work around my home?

I woke up this morning to the sound of a lawn mower. Now I live by myself in a trailor house. Let me say that again. I live by myself and I didn't order this.
anyways, I look out my window and I see a truck and trailor with yard working equipment. anyways theirs these Mexicans and they're plowing away at my yard doing all kinds of crap they are working my sidewalk, bushes and picking up my beer cans.

Should I be worried?

Is it illegal to drink a few beers while driving riding mower in one's own yard?

Just wondering if someone is driving their riding lawn mower in their yard, while drinking beer as they drive it, is it considered illegal? Please no smart as* comments. I know it is for sure on regular roads/highways/other people's yards, but what about it being in one's own yard?

If you avoid public intoxication and stay in your yard, you'll be fine. Public drunkenness, or taking the mower off the lot will get you nailed.

What is the best way to cut with a riding lawn mower pattern wise? trying to go back and forth has us missing a lot of spots because it turns so wide. Any and all suggestions are appreciated

10 yr old Briggs & Stratton 5HP Quantum Lawn Mower. How to replace wire that stops mower?

This wire is connected to a bar near to where your hands go to push the mower, that when you let go of it, the mower goes off. I guess it's an emergency safety feature.

I like to let the safety bar hang down below the handle, some folk like it to be above the handle, anyway the first thing you do is take the old one off and take it to sears to match it up. Replace the cable at the motor first then slide the S connector into the safety bar hole sideways and then twist it. Simple and easy to fix. Don't try and defeat this feature, I have toeless friends that live on the river. Cutting the grass near the bank involves letting the mower go all the way down to the waters edge and sometimes good old boys have one too many beers in em when mowing during summer. After a full day of water sking the last thang you want to do is cut the grass. Not having that feature could cause serious injury.
