Can Mulch Mower kill grass Seeds on grass blades?

My grass has gotten a bit large and now has grass seeds on their tips. It needs a good cut but i figure i should use a Mulch Mower so that when i do cut my lawn those seeds from the blades can make it to my soil. Will this happen or will the mulch mower, mulch the hell out of those seeds too rendering them useless?

I am guessing you have Bermuda grass.So NO mulching won't hurt your seeds unless there is so much leaf that after mulching you get a fungus problem.Heck most grass seed makes it through a cow,sheep,or goats digestive tract unharmed...

St. Augustine grass is the pits?

I bought my home recently and the back yard was neglected. About 60% was dirt and the small amount of St. Augustine grass was almost totally brown. After some serious watering and seeding the grass is looking pretty green but there are still some problems.

The only thing I could not get rid of was the pits in the grass. There are little dips and pits all over the lawn. You can't see them until you step in one because the grass is so thick. Pushing a lawn mower is hell because you can't go in a straight line without having to wiggle the wheels out of a pit. Is there a way to fill them in without digging up the grass first? If I add dirt to the pits won't the grass grow through it.?

Filling the pits with dirt will solve the problem. The grass will definitely grow through it. I had Bermuda grass at my house in NC and it went brown too--normally--so one winter I decided to dethatch by burning it. I got rid of all the dead grass, then I reseeded with a perennial rye, and it looked much better. But it didn't remove the Bermuda; you need God for that, getting rid of the stuff is like trying to get crack out of LA. Forget it.

How to get rid of weeds without pesticides?

Hi my lawn is more weeds then grass. After buying a riding lawn mower and keeping the grass short, I hoped to prevent weeds from spreading. Bought a roofing blowtorch and fried some of the weeds, only to see them come back within a week. How about extra firtilizer, dethatching the lawn and even seeding grass seeds in the fall. What helps best other than plowing it under and using poison.

I would prefer you to be more specific. What types of weeds are you talking about? Most people don't realize that almost all grass types are THEMSELVES considered weeds, just weeds we like looking at.

I used to be a landscaper here in Arizona, where there are two main types of grass (by main, I mean most popular for the conditions here): Rye grass for winter and Bermuda grass for summer months.

Most NOXIOUS weeds (dandelions, clover and such) or types of grass you DON'T want (Johnson grass or Nutt's Edge grass) will just get a better foothold if you dethatch your lawn. Dethatching basically rips the grass you DO want into smaller sections, sometimes damaging the roots. Dethatching is more to knock back overthatched (or thickly grown) lawn grasses such as Bermuda.

While dandelions will grow most anywhere and in any conditions, clover will only take hold in barren spots, like what you have after dethatching. I would recommend a "Weed and Feed" type fertilizer, which gives nutrients to specific grasses but will kill weeds.

For Nutt's Edge grass we tried an experiment. Once Nutts Edge gets into an area, (typically an area which floods fairly often) it's almost impossible to get rid of and spreads quickly. We had a small area of Nutt's Edge. We pounded some short wooden stakes (like grading stakes) into the ground around the infected area and attached clear polyetheline across the tops of the stakes so that the plastic isn't lying right on the grass area. After about a week of intense sunshine (remember, I'm in Arizona) the Nutt's Edge was dead (well, EVERYTHING was dead- we pretty much baked, well, sterilized, the ground). We then went in , dug the ground up and replaced it with sod. Never had THAT weed there again. But I would need a lot more detail on what your particular cicumstances are to give you good advice.

Bermuda propagates itself with stolons underground. Unless you can afford to remove the top 8" of soil from your yard, replace the soil and re-sod you are gonna eventually have a Bermuda grass lawn. If you leave so much as just one stolon under the walk or driveway, the Bermuda will return. If your neighbors have any Bermuda, it is hopeless.
Bermuda actually makes a good lawn carpet. On the down side the stuff itches like crazy when you get it on you, but for some reason chiggers don't like it and won't live in it. here in Arizona it is the summer lawn of choice, come fall we simply cut it as low as our mowers will allow and over-seed with a cool weather annual grass. When the Bermuda returns from dormancy in the spring it will again green up and take back over the yard.

How many amps is needed for a good electric lawn mower?

We've got a very small yard of bermuda grass. We're currently shopping for electric lawn mowers, but don't know what an acceptable amount of amps would be? We saw one in our price range with 6.5 amps, but for $40 more, we can get a 9 amp mower. Is there a big difference between the two? Would I need more amps? And is it worth the $40 price difference? Thanks so much!

With your very small yard you will not need the higher amp model. You need to keep the grass at a reasonable height each time you mow. In other words do not let it get too long before you mow. That is what will cause a strain on the smaller motor. The difference between the two motors you are looking at is very small. The 6.5 amp is approximately 1/2 horsepower and the 9 amp is approximately 3/4 horsepower. So that is very little difference. I think you should save the 40 bucks for something else. What type of lawn mower do you recommend?

Q. I have a small back yard (20' x 30') and love the way the grass looks once it has been cut with a gas lawn mower. However, I want to get rid of the gas mower and considering a reel or electric mower. Would the reel mower give it the same look as the gas mower does? I have Zoysia grass. Opinions?? Thanks!

I've been using mine for over 7 years and is without a doubt the best reel mower out there. Easy to push and maintain. I Never use a rotary mower on zoysia grass. I own a maintenance company and only mow properties with Bermuda, zoysia, or paspalum grasses. It's perfect for areas I can't get a heavy mower into. My zoysia grass is maintained at 350 mm.
You will be able to get a closer, or lower elevated cut on your zoysia, which in my opinion looks better. You will be able to scalp your grass at the lowest setting to dethatch your lawn when needed also.
The first few cuts will be a learning experience and there will be bald spots on any areas where the soil is not level under the grass. Rolling it will solve that problem.
