Which is cheaper in the long run? An electric or gas lawn mower?

Sunshine S

Also, what are the pros and cons of each? We just purchased our first home and need to mow the lawn ASAP, but have no clue where to start looking for the information to help us make a decision. Thank you!

Answer
There are definitely pros and cons of each. I will not buy an electric cord mower because of the cord dragging around the yard and the fact that they are less powerful (lower hp, really lower torque). When your grass is thick or very long the extra power from a gas mower is definitely appreciated. I have not tried the battery powered and seems to be a novel idea because of the low noise. Not sure about the power associated with the battery powered. I have owned several gas mowers and have not ever had to mix oil and gas for the mower, so really just keeping a gas can around is the only issue.

The things I would look at is the size of your yard, any hills, location of electrical outlets.

Which lawn mower blade sharpener fits my mower ? Help me out !!!?

Sonia W.

Last year, I bought a Greenworks 25022 electric lawn mower from http://www.getlawnmower.com/electric-lawn-mower/ . I got very good service in last season.

I think I need to sharpen my lawn mower blade this year before use. I want to buy a lawn mower blade sharpener, but I am unable to choose the right one. Please suggest me which lawn mower blade sharpener will fit my mower. or you may tell me which factors should I consider before buying a mower blade sharpener.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
electric lawn mowers, don't have sharpeners ,they are throw away when well used, this is why they are so cheap you throw them out at end of summer and buy new one in the spring
try a grindstone if you must try to sharpen it
sorry to be blunt

How exactly do lawn mower engines work?

Q. I am trying to build a beefed up go kart and I have a lawn mower engine that I can use but lawn mower engines are vertical driven and a go kart is usually driven with a horizontal mount. How do I make the conversion, should I just use a gear box? Also how do the governors work, my budy build one with an old 5hp briggs and stratton and he tore the governor off why did he do this? any ideas?...thanx guys.

Answer
You can buy a gear box to run a vertical shaft engine, but it is probably cheaper to buy a horizontal shaft engine than to try to convert it.

The governor is in place on a lawn mower for 2 reasons -

(1) when you're using the lawn mower, its not practical to keep a hand on the throttle, but the mower needs to operate at different throttle openings to work efficiently. The governor senses load on the engine and reduces or increases throttle opening as needed.
(2) if you were to just run it wide open, you would overheat the engine and reduce the life of it. Also, the maximum speed has to be governed because the blade is only safe to a certain RPM.

On a go cart, you can regulate the throttle manually (in fact, you want to). The governor is not required, and because you are changing the load, you don't really have to worry about over revving the motor to the point that things break.

ps - if the engine came off a riding mower, you might already have a gearbox. If its from a push mower - I would check the price of horizontal shaft units first, you might be pleasantly surprised.

WHITE Lawn Mowers?

Art

I am considering purchasing a White 21" Lawn Mower 6.75 HP(Self Propelled). I have not heard anything about these Lawn mowers. Price is $320.

Your recommendations? Pros/Cons?
White Outdoor Lawn Mowers. Not the color white.
http://www.whiteoutdoor.com/

Answer
Just went on White's web site. Their stuff is really nothing special,
great because they say it's great... They don't even say what motor the use (B&S , Honda,...) what the housing's made of etc
Still they're cheap.
Really, nothing to write home about

Should I buy a residential lawn mower or a commercial one?

Joe

I have 7 lawns and my lawn mower just broke and i was wondering should i buy a riding mower or a push mower
my lawns usually took me 2 hours to do with a 21 inch cut deck

Answer
A commercial lawn mower would be a better idea as they are very efficient and good at cutting grass. The companies that provide you with them offer a limited service option as well. This way if something goes wrong you can always rely on them to offer professional service. Here are a few cheap lawn mowers which you could probably use => http://home-and-garden.become.com/cheap-lawn-mowers-riding

Advice on buying a lawn mower?

I've never used a non-self-propelled lawn mower, but they are cheaper than the self-propelled ones and I am trying to save money. Would a gas-powered pull-start non-self-propelled lawn mower be too strenuous for a 50-year-old woman to use? What other things should I look for in a lawn mower? Our lawn is about 1500 square feet and very level.

Answer
It All Depends on the mower Some are easier to start than others. Really I Would go With what you are used to. Most towns have a "handy" man who takes older mowers and fixes them, Ask Around and See if you can buy a cheap Self propelled from him/her. You also Need to think About do you want a Bag-er, Mulch-er or one that just Spits the cut grass. if you want your yard to be Super clean looking you want to bag it however if you Get a Mulch-er it Will cut the grass in small enough pieces that you can't really tell you did not bag. I am 31 and REALLY like the Self propelled, My husband laughs @ me cause I will only use the one with it But it makes mowing so Much easier and seems to go a bit faster. Good Luck and I hope this helps

What is the slowest rpm a lawn mower can go and still be able to cut?

I am trying a project of mine out with an electric lawn mower and I want to get the cheapest electric motor as possible. I only ask what the slowest speed is because it seems that motors that produce a lower rpm cost less. So, I am looking for the cheapest electric motor that can still rotate fast enough to cut grass.

Answer
the r.p.m. or speed is not relevant in grass cutting, it is the width of the blade that decides cost. 12" blade is about the smallest and cheapest, but will need far more passes than a 16" blade

What is the price of a basic manual lawn mower in India?

I have a small lawn about 150 sq ft. Looking for a cheap manual lawn mower. Where can I get a manual lawn mower in Kolkata?

Answer
Sure, it's called Shudra. Get some of those and some scissors. Scissors are easy enough to find, as far as the Shudra, you'd know better than I where to get some. You could try getting some old style Paraiyar, but everyone has "put on airs" and you'd be hard pressed to find any that actually admitted to being Paraiyar. You're looking at maybe 1000-2000 rupee to get started and then about 300-500 each time you need it cut. Do you have access to sheep or goats? That's another option. Real cheap.

Can I change cutting height for lawn mower without draining oil/gas?

I just got a cheap lawn mower from Lowe's and didn't really care that I had to adjust the wheel height manually since there is not a lever, as on most self propelled mowers, but now, in it's median height, it is barely skimming the grass.

Now that I have it filled with oil and gas, must I drain the fluids to turn it over and adjust the wheel height? I know, maybe a stupid question, but I just don't want to damage the machine. Thanks for your help!

Answer
no, just prop one end up about a foot off the ground, and you can reach under with a wrench to change them, then do the other end, itll be fine.

What's a cheap way to store a riding lawn mower?

best lawn mower cheap on Cheap Mowers
best lawn mower cheap image

Graciela,

My aunt offered me a good deal on her old riding lawn mower and I really want to buy it. Unfortunately, I have no place for it. My garage is too small, and our cars barely fit already. I have no shed and can't afford to build one. Are there any other options?

Answer
Sheds really aren't that expensive. you can pick up a cheap DIY plastic shed for very little money.

if that still isn't an option, go with a tarp. just park the thing next to your house and lay the tarp over it. if it's windy, make sure to stake it down.

Would this be a good way to make quick cash?

Mike Dicke

I'm lookin at bartering, or just buying and selling on craigslist to make some quick cash.

I was thinking, are lawn mowers alot cheaper in the winter? I'm thinking about going on craigslist in november and buying like $500-700 worth of push-mowers in the $25-75 range. I could clean em up a bit, then in february or march, put them back up for $75-125. The demand would probably be alot higher down here when the Texas summer hits.

I know I'd be sitting on my investment for a few months, but would it pay off?

Answer
Funny thing - the CURB ALERT section of Craig's list has shown me lots of items irrespective of season - and for no cost at all. I have also noticed that March, April and May are prime months for all sorts of garden-related 'stuff' to be left at the curb. Including several lawnmowers needing nothing more than a little bit of TLC and/or blade sharpening.

In theory, what you suggest is just fine. But the truly-cheap sorts will hunt down discards and trash-picks, do the work and realize the benefit without the middle-man. Those without necessary skills and also in need of bargains are your customer base - and these sorts can be very problematic. I would not want to have my home-address & phone number hanging out there as being responsible for this type of equipment unless I was absolutely sure that what I was selling was safe and reliable. Can you be sure of that?
