Which lawn mower to get?!?!?

best lawn mower consumer review on ... | Top 10 Best Chain Saws Reviews And Consumer Complaints - Part 30
best lawn mower consumer review image

Well my current lawn mower is a piece of crap now so i was planning on buying a new one soon.
I have narrowed my choices down to 2 self propelled mowers.
1) Craftmans 160cc 22'' rear propelled (from sears)
or
2) Troy-Blit 21'' self propelled rear wheeled (from lowes)

Both have 4 star reviews and I just dont know lol.
Which would you pick and WHY?

Answer
Consumer Reports rates the self-propelled mowers as following: The top 8 rated mowers are Honda and Toro. In 9th place is the craftman. The best Troybuilt is rates in 23rd place. So, Consumer Reports rates the Craftman mower much better than the Troybuilt. This was based on 35,229 self propelled mower owners.I would consider buying a Toro, Its only $10 more than the Troybuilt and $200 less than Honda and its rated the best of them all in fewest repairs. That is just my thought.

any review's on toro lawn mower model no 20439?

was thinking of buying a used 1 that just had a new blade clutch replaced?

Answer
I have similar model, I like it, still starts, runs cuts great. My model does not have the blade break clutch. Not sure how that effects the longevity. Other than regular maintenance, I have only had to replace the piece that holds the blade onto the motor shaft. ($12)

You should be able to find a consumer reports review (93' - 94') of a similar model at your local library.

How good is the Toro E-cycler cordless mower?

I am thinking of getting the Toro cordless mower and worried about how it cuts thick grass. My yard has thick grass and it has a lot of moisture. I am curious how dose this mower do by it being cordless? Also if not this mower how about the Toro gas mowers like the ones with the pace self propelled systems with either electric start or blade brakes? thank you

Answer
If you are looking for a Toro mower, I would go with recommendations by Consumer Reports. They just came out with their latest reviews of the top lawn mowers for this year and several Toro mowers are on the list. But they are all gas-powered. If you have a large yard and thick grass, I'd go with the gas mowers as it's more powerful than electric mowers.

2011 Best Lawn Mower Recommendations by Consumer Reports:
http://www.tigerfdn.com/consumer-reports-recommended-lawn-mowers

Some of the Toro mowers mentioned are:

Toro Super Recycler Self-Propelled Mower 20092
Toro Super Bagger 20192
Toro Recycler 20333 (this was on last year's list as a "best buy" also)
Toro Recycler 2033

What's the better mower: electric or gas?

baymast13

I have my eye on a rechargeable electric mower (no cord to mess with!). My old gas mower is getting too difficult to get started. I just don't have the "oomph" to make it catch. So, from people who actually know, which is the better mower, gas or electric? I have a medium-sized yard. Serious answers, please. Thanks!

Answer
Electric mowers have come a long way and can perform just as well as gas mowers under normal conditions.

Gas mower pros & cons:

Pros: With a more powerful motor, it can easily cut over-grown lawn. Good for large lawns.
Cons: More maintenance required such as oil and filter change, spark plugs, etc. Loud and exhaust emissions that are bad for your health and the environment. High gas prices add to operating cost.

Electric mower pros & cons:

Pros: Low maintenance. Can get bogged down if cutting overgrown lawn. No harmful emissions, less noisy, no gas costs.
Cons: If mowing large lawn, you might not be able to mow on one charge. In which case, you either need to wait and recharge or buy a back-up battery to switch it out. However, the current top-rated electric mower can mow up to 1/3 acre on one charge (a bit more than 14,000 sq.ft.). Since you have a medium-sized yard, an electric mower will do just fine.

Personally, I'd go with an electric one. Not having to buy gas each time I mow and low maintenance makes it much more cost-effective.

If you want to know which electric mower to buy, check out this year's recommendations by Consumer Reports here: http://www.tigerfdn.com/consumer-reports-recommended-lawn-mowers.

Gardena lawn mower - is it any good?

best lawn mower consumer review on Poulan Lawn Mower Honda Engine | Top 10 Best Snow Blowers Reviews And ...
best lawn mower consumer review image

The Divine

I need to buy a new lawnmower and I've been looking at the Gardena 12V cordless lawnmower. Has anyone used it, and what did you think if you have?

Just to note: I have a perfectly flat yard (like a pancake run over by a steamroller) roughly 45 x 100 feet plus an 8 x 45 boulevard to mow.

Answer
~ Here are reviews on the Gardena mower you are looking for. http://reviews.homedepot.ca/1998/941025/reviews.htm

According to consumer search http://www.consumersearch.com/www/lawn_and_garden/lawn-mower-reviews/
, the cordless Black & Decker CMM1200 actually does a better job than most corded electric mowers, mulching more effectively and cutting more evenly. It can mow up to about 1/3 acre on one battery charge. The CMM1200 has a folding handle, one-lever height adjustment and a polymer deck with lifetime warranty. The downside is that it costs more than a corded mower, and you'll need to buy a new battery in a couple of years.

Where can I see lawn mower ratings and/or reviews (either professional or consumer)?

best lawn mower consumer review on Charmglow Product Reviews and Ratings - Gas grills - 720-0234 (Home
best lawn mower consumer review image

Ike

I'm shopping for a self-propelled walk-behind gasoline lawn mower. The only ratings I've found so far are from JD Power (which were helpful), and some very sparse consumer reviews on Amazon (which mostly concern electric mowers).

I'd like to find more professional or consumer satisfaction ratings/reviews/statistics. Thanks for any info!

Answer
I would suggest visiting Epinions.com

We are a community of writers that write detailed reviews on products and services. The Home And Garden section of the website features several reviews of popular mowers. Here is one I wrote of the Black & Decker CMM1200 , http://www.epinions.com/review/Black_Decker_19_In_24_Volt_Cordless_Mulching_Mower/content_445899312772

What are some of the best reel push mowers available?

Matthew

I have a couple of lawns lined up to cut. I want a push mower for the exercise and the fact that I won't have to pay for gasoline. I've just heard that some of them don't cut very well no matter how much muscle you put into it. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
I'm in the market for one too. We bought one second-hand to check things out and get a real feel for this type of mower. Here's what we learned. Most reel push mowers are good to maintain short grass, which is no good if you want to control weeds. I want my lawn to be 3+ inch high. When the product specs say you'll need to sharpen once a season, it means 2-4 times a season. The blades on our Great States mower were sharpened before our first mow and after mowing three times, the ends of the blades of grass looked riped (and our lawn is small - 1200 sq ft). If you're obsessive about having your lawn cut evenly (like me), you'll get your cardio workout in by mowing your lawn (and it still might not end up even- argh!). My approach to mowing the lawn is I don't mind mowing 3 times a week, if I only have to do it for 10 minutes each time; but the results have to be clean and even.
The main thing to remember is if your lawn is level everywhere (ie no pot-holes anywhere) and free of hidden rocks and twigs, you can consider a manual reel mower. But if it's not, then you'll either have to fix it or restrict yourself to the more expensive manual reel mowers. However, don't confuse price with quality: we thought that a Brill was the top of the line. Not so. First figure out what kind of lawn you have and the kind you'd like to have and maintain, and what you're willing to put up with, then choose the best mower for you.
After some research, I've decided that the Fiskars Momentum is the one for me. Problem is, it's not cheap. Lowes has them at the cheapest price around: $200. Or maybe I'll go for the Scott reel mower for $130. Which boils the question down to: will I be irritated at myself the next four years for saving $70 on the initial price of the mower? How much do I value 4 years of peace of mind, little to no sharpening of the blades and an easier mowing job for an evenly cut lawn? Kind of a biased question, I know.
You might decide to do like we did and check craigslist for a second hand mower to figure out what you like and what your lawn is like to mow. Then, when you're ready to get "the one", go for it and sell old one again on craigslist for a slightly lower price than what you paid for. Turned out to be a pretty cheap "rental" for us.
