lawn mower question?

kalamibe

What's a good, not super expensive, lawn mower with a mulcher?
Yea, I was looking between $200-$400

Answer
With the bad mowing season this country just had, and this time of year, it is a good time to get a new mower! Sears has what looks like a good deal on this one. Item# 07137561000 Mfr. model# 37561. It's on sale now too. (50 bucks off)

Are non gas lawn mowers effective?

Arliss

I'm debating on whether or not to go with the old school non gas lawn mower...you know all metal ones you see on Leave It To Beaver and My Three Sons? LOL. Anyway, I've been told by a friend of mine that they are effective in that, they don't leave long grass clippings and that they cut every bit as well as a regular lawn mower. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of this?

Answer
I actually used one for several years, and they work really well. You can buy them at Sears which is where I got mine. They are so much cheaper than a gas powered mower, and so much quieter., and there is no stinky gas or gas fumes to deal with. They are also quite easy to push, and actually kindof fun to use. The clippings left on the ground are good for the soil. The only cons that I can see, is that if you have a really large yard, it might take a little longer to mow it, also you can't let your grass grow too long, because it will be more difficult to cut, and the clippings will be long-and you may have to rake them up. I don't believe the old school mowers have any sort of mulching abilities to take care of long clippings (but you can get a little container that sits behind it to collect clippings, I believe)

Is it legal for someone to drive a lawn mower on the road?

I was coming over some rail road tracks today and when I got over them there was a man riding his lawn mower in the road (with his kid on it). Now I'm not mad really or anything cause I live in the country and understand it more than most people do, but my goodness, have some sense. Especially having your kid on there?

I live in Kentucky if that's helps anyone with answering.

Another one quick question, if I had hit him, would it be his or my fault? Or would it have been a double or no fault situation. I'm not going to go to the police or anything, it's not that big a deal, just curious.

Answer
In the rural areas of Kentucky It's legal to drive farm machinery on public roads (no interstates) this includes lawn mowers provided they follow the rules of the road and have an Orange Triangle reflector on the rear of the vehicle or Flashing/Rotating Yellow Caution light.

Riders other than the driver/operator are prohibited unless the vehicle has appropriate seating...

There's a linkage sound or chain rattling sound on my riding lawn mower. What is this?

orchard_li

Just got this riding lawn mower and not even a month of having this, there is a sound we hear that most resembles a loose chain or rattling sound at "slower speeds". Backwards forwards, same thing. It runs fine but this sound has just started doing this. Would you know what this is?

Answer
Sounds like the transaxle for sure..... any warranty? what about a 30 day or 90 day return deal? take it back.

Where can I find replacement Craftsman mower parts for my Craftsman mower?

I have a Craftsman lawn mower and need to replace a few parts, but am not sure what my options are and who has the best deals. Thanks.

Answer
Fortunately, you have lots of options when it comes to finding replacement parts for your Craftsman mower. Hardware stores such as Sears, Home Depot, Lowe's, and Ace Hardware should have a good selection of parts. You can also find certain parts online at Amazon and other online vendors - just do a google search and some should come up. These may be cheaper than the hardware stores.

One other thing worth mentioning - when purchasing replacement parts, be sure you know the type and model number of your mower. Since Craftsman makes a range of different mowers with similar but slightly different parts, you could mistakenly purchase a part that is incompatible with your particular mower, like a belt that is too long or short for example. You can refer to the mnaual that came with your mower for the correct model #.

Hope this helps. For more detailed information on various Craftsman mower models and replacement parts, you can always check out the source website below.

Where can I access a John Deere 111 Riding Mower operators Manuel and Parts catalog?

I have a John Deere 111 Riding Lawn Mower that I want to take apart, degrease and power wash, repaint and put back together with many new parts. I want to make sure buy the right parts so having a parts catalog or schematic drawings would be very helpful. Do I have to deal with an authorized John Deere dealer or could I purchase the parts that I need from dependable aftermarket companies. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's a cheap way to store a riding lawn mower?

Graciela,

My aunt offered me a good deal on her old riding lawn mower and I really want to buy it. Unfortunately, I have no place for it. My garage is too small, and our cars barely fit already. I have no shed and can't afford to build one. Are there any other options?

Answer
Sheds really aren't that expensive. you can pick up a cheap DIY plastic shed for very little money.

if that still isn't an option, go with a tarp. just park the thing next to your house and lay the tarp over it. if it's windy, make sure to stake it down.

why does my lawn mower sputter and back fire when the mower is down?

ChicagoGir

Our riding lawn mower runs fine when it is in normal gears however if you put the mower deck down to cut it starts sputtering and backfiring. It may work itself out every now and then but most of the time it sputters the whole time you are cutting the grass...What's the deal?

Answer
When you put a load on the engine it starts acting up, this is probably caused by a dirty carburetor. The governor is trying to keep the rpms up and the fuel/air mixture is wrong. It is probably running rich, too much fuel, and that is causing the backfire. A good carburetor cleaning should fix the problem. Try some fuel system cleaner first but don't count too much on it.

How to put in a lawn mower bag?

I have a bolens side discharge lawn mower, & I'm trying to mow my lawn but I don't know how to get this bag in, it's opening is way smaller then any other bags I have ever had, plus it's a side discharge, if you guys know any videos that would help or know exactly what I'm dealing with please help, thank you.

Answer
Look to the manufacturer for what to do. Do it on-line.
Are you sure it's the right bag and just as important are you sure that mower is made for a bag.
You just cant make a mower into one that holds the grass if it's not already capable of doing that.

I don't want to spend the money to buy a lawn mower. What else can I use?

I remember seeing a gardener using a tool once to cut the grass in our backyard because he didn't want to deal with hauling the lawn mower back there. Maybe it was a weed wacker? What equipment do you recommend I use instead of dealing with a big lawn mower to cut grass?

Answer
How about one of those old fashioned push mowers. They use no gas, just your energy. They are lightweight, and work fine for a small yard. I got mine for about $85 at Home Depot last year. I use it for very small grassy areas in the yard. Good luck!

Toro - 19 horse power Koedler engine
Cub Cadet - 19 horse power Koedler engine
Troy - 18.5 horse power Koedler engine
John Deer - 19 horse power Straggs engine
Lawn Boy - 19 horse power Honda engine

All lawn mowers are 42 inch cut zero turn radius and come from a major retailer like Lowe's and Home Depot. Is it better to purchase a lawn mower directly from the company dealer (ex. buy a John Deer from a John Deer dealer) and which one of these lawn mowers will be the most durable?

Answer
From my personal experience, I find the Briggs & Stratton and Honda the most reliable, with the Koedler doing well in third. Durability wise, nothing beats a John Deere.

Home Cheapo or Lower's are probably you best bet, unless you can get it direct cheaper from the manufacturer or dealer. It would take some comparison shopping. Usually around Father's day (upcoming) they offer some great deals on these in any of these places - check your newspaper circular for the best deal.

Also don't rule out "refurbed" if you are looking for a bargain - that is how I got my last mower for about 1/2 of what it retailed for normally...
