what is the best lawn mower with electric start key function?

antiquegal

need reviews on brands, also repairs etc.

Answer
Try the Toro model 20074. It is a 3-in-1 mower (baggs, mulches, and side discharges), has electric start, and has the best self propelled system on the market, the Toro Personal Pace. It never goes faster than you. I love mine!

Lawn Mower will not start?

Phil

I have a "Cub Cadet 173cc OHV, Overhead Valve Engine, 6.75ft-lbs, gross torque/rated @ 3060rpm, Electric SureStart Lawn Mower."

The mower has been sitting for about a year now (my fault, I know), and now I can't get it to start. The electric start is fully charged, but when I attempt to crank it...it just "clicks" alot. As for the pull start, I can pull all day and nothing happen.

It is full of gas and filled with the correct amount of oil (10w-30).

Any suggestions?
Forgot to mention...even though it was sitting for about a year, there was no gas in the tank. It was completely empty.
Ok, so here is where I'm at.

First the pull start. I had old gas in the tank, it was flooded, and the spark plug was bad. Replaced/fixed all and added some carb. cleaner...started right up with no issues.

Electric start was the real issue. The starter assembly was not coming up and engaging the flywheel.

According to Cub Cadet, they don't sell a assembly repair kit...So I must buy the entire starter. Which by the way cost $100, heck my truck starter don't cost that much! I'll stick with the pull start. Thank you all for your help.

Answer
1. Pull the spark plug. If the spark plug is wet it won't start.
2. Hold the sparkplug, with wire connected, but spark plug removed against the block to ground it. . Pull the rope, if you see spark, you know your electrical is good.
3. Remove and clean the connections to the battery. If the connections are bad, the charger won't get to the battery. If it is charged, the corroded terminals won't let the current get to the starter or ignition.
3. Look for obvious corrosion on all electrical connections.

Trying to start a Lawn Mower business!?

Hey everyone - I'm trying to start a business mowing lawns but I'm having some trouble. I don't really hv enough money to buy a 300$ lawn mower or a car that's big enough to hold it.

The most I could do is buy the black & decker trimmer and edger but I don't think that would help in mowing lawns.

Answer
lol, well there is no getting around buying a lawn mower to start a lawn mower business... don't get any electric weed eaters or edgers, even if its cordless, just don't. you don't need an edger at all. buy a straight shaft weedeater and you can edge with that, youtube and practice how to do it. i don't really know what to tell you about the mower, but u at least need a $300 mower. i know a kid that makes some real money with a $400 honda mower and a shindaiwa weed eater.

Guys, the mower wont start anymore, it was working fine last week, but now its dead. The grass was very wet when I mowed last time, could it be some short circuit or something, but it worked until I finished mowing the last time I used it.Any tips on how to trouble shoot it? I open the cover to expose the motor, but not sure how to test the electric supply.

Ok I tested the supply using voltage tester and its reading voltage at the terminal connected to the motor. (red/black point). Now what? Is it the motor gone bad?

Answer
You will need a volt meter, or at the very least an LED voltage detector. It could be anything from the cord to the switch, from the switch to the motor connection, a burned out/ not seated brush, to a burned out armature. Link posted might better illustrate what your up against:

We received a electric lawn mower as a gift (it's a second hand mower) my husband has been using it for several months. The only way he can use it without cutting the electrical cord is pushing and pulling the mower with one hand while pulling, pushing, picking the cord with the other. I think it takes double the time cutting the lawn with this machine....is there a tip that you can give us? maybe something we don't know, like a retractable electrical cord...I don't know....something that you can use to be able to push the machine with both hands

Answer
BTW "The Man": 'Electric' would mean..... electricity. 'Battery-powered' would mean.... battery. DUH.

I have an electric; takes a few uses to get the hang of it. Most have a handle that 'flips' from one side to the other, so that the cord stays on the same side of the mower, and you don't have to walk backward, or drag the mower - both of which can be dangerous. Check your mower to see if it has a hinge at the bottom, where the handle attaches to the mower. If so, then you should also have a lever that will unlock the handle and allow you to flip it over to the other side.

Once you figure that out: start mowing closest to where you've plugged in, and walk away from it; make sure that where the cord plugs into the handle stays closest to the 'plug in' point at your house. Then, as you mow further away, the cord stays on the grass that's already been mowed.

what makes a lawn mower engine start to fire.?

Adam M

what is the mechanism that starts the ignition in a lawn mower engine and how does it work. I have one that you pull a cord and it starts.

Answer
There is a magneto which generates a high voltage electric current, when the flywheel turns. As you pull, this current goes to the spark plug. Gas mixed with air in the carburetor has been admitted to the cylinder through the intake valve- the valve closes, the piston travels up to compress the gas/air; At the critical moment the plug fires and voila! spark ignites the mixture and down goes the piston as the mixture burns... As the piston is driven down, the exhaust valve opens and out goes the burn gas/air.

how do determine the best lawn mower in california?

Need to buy a new lawn mower that is easy for a woman and/or adolescent to operate. Need easy start mechanism and easy operation of mower body.

Answer
Well, Consumer Reports just did a rating on lawn mowers in their May 2007 issue. It seems that the self-propelled mowers are much more repair prone than push types though they are easier to operate. Lawn Boy is reported as being the most repair prone push mower brand. Here are their best buys for small, level laws (like we have in CA) Cub cadet, craftsman, Black & Decker and Homelite. They seem to like the cub cadet because it is lighter, combines mowing with fine bagging and a premium engine. Among the electric mowers they like the Black & Decker.

The Toro, Craftsman and Yard Machines come with electric starting.

The directions says to plug a fuse into the battery. I cannot figure out what they are talking about. There is nothing in the box that looks like a fuse. Am I missing something? Do you now anything about a lawnboy self propelled lawn mower with electric start. Did someone at the store take the fuse out of the box? Where would it be? Am I just stupid cause I cannot find anything that looks like a fuse?

Answer
See if this helps - I just Googled Lawn Boy. The fuse is amber colored plastic. This shows where it goes.

pros and cons of an electric start lawn mower?

antiquegal

need to buy a new lawn mower, thinking of one with an electric start, good idea or not

Answer
It all depends on you. I'll list a few things to help you decide

Cons:
1.) Its another thing that can go wrong.
2.) You need to have an electrical plug near where you store the mower. (At least on the Toro and Lawnboy units)
3.) Risk of the gears involved in the starting going bad.
4.) Over time the battery will fail, and it is expensive to be replaced.

Pros:
1). No string to pull!
2.) There is a recoil start as a back-up.
3.) No throwing out your back to start.
4.) Prime, turn the key and go!

The battery should last for at least 5 years or more. On the Toro and LawnBoy units, you plug it into the wall once a month, overnight. They do not charge themselves.

My personal recommendation would be the Toro 20074 Recycler w/ Personal Pace and Electric start. You can find your nearest Toro dealer by using the dealer locator on http://www.toro.com or they have this unit at Home Depot for $399. It has a 2 year Guaranteed to Start warranty with it.
