If the hill is so steep you can't use a 4 stroke push lawn mower I think you should get a really nice weed wacker. Most people use weed wackers on a hill that is really steep. Makes it safe too. Or just spray it with weed killer like roundup.

depending on how steep the hills are and what you are going to be hauling in your yard cart, you are going to be better off with a hydrostatic tranny, but you may want to look at a shaft drive mower instead of the belt drive, they do not have a drive belt, so you don't ever have to worry about it stretching and wearing out and then having to replace it. the shaft drive is much stouter as well and will pull whatever you want it to. hope this helps

Get a Honda self-propelled walk behind mower. A 4 cycle lawnmower is better for steep hills, been doing this for 25 years. Anything else is big or too expensive, like a riding mower 54inch cut, you can't roll it. When using a riding mower, ride up and down the hill diagonally each way and everytime for the best and safest cuts.

Lawn mower emitting huge clouds of white smoke?

Q. So yesterday I was trying to mow up the hills on my lawn

( I have a hilly lawn)

and the lawn mower would all of a sudden start dying on my almost as if it was being choked by long grass

( there wasn't any long grass to choke it)

and emitting huge white clouds of smoke from the muffler I believe

(I'm not sure if it is the muffler, its the thing on the side of the mower by the primer with the holes in it)

The lawn mower sat outside all winter last season with the same oil in it.
The lawn mower seems to mow just fine on level ground, its just when it is going up hill with the engine drive that it will start dying and emitting the smoke.

I have a full tank of gas.

Most 4-cycle engines are designed to function on up to a 11 to 14 percent grade. If your lawn is very hilly, your probably trying to run the mower at too steep an incline and oil is getting forced into the cylinder.

Perhaps you should get a 2 cycle mower, like a lawn boy. 2 cycle engines can operate at any angle, even upside down, without harm, or decrease in function.

Part of a lawn I have to mow is on a hill, more precisely a fairly steep short berm. I notice that my gas lawn mower (toro brand, 4 stroke engine) has problems with it and tends to eventually stall and definitely burns more oil. Changing the landscaping to not-lawn is not an option. I am wondering if there are differences if I approach the hill sideways or better from top or bottom? Sorry if that is a stupid question but I am pretty clueless about gas engines in general.

Hi, tigrillen. Not a stupid question at all. Two things, one being the mower.

Some old Toros actually had an oil pump in the engine, while their standard mowers these days do not. On a steep slope, the new ones may have some oiling issues as a result. I used to keep an older Lawn Boy with a two-stroke running just for this issue. Lacking that option, you might even consider using a line trimmer to keep things neat, rather than a mower (gets pretty good with practice).

Second thing is that approach with a mower. If the slope is steep enough to potentially roll the mower when trying to go across the slope ("traversing"), have to just go up and down. Then the issue is not slipping when coming down and getting your foot under the mower deck. (A relative is missing a couple of toes from doing that.) Don't mow damp turf (i.e., avoid a lawn "water slide"), wear good shoes, and stay a little off to one side. And keep kids and pets well away while doing this.

A John Deere, a Cub Cadet ( home depot) if your yard is large enough. If all you need is a self propelled walking mower then Honda makes some really good ones. Craftsmen makes good tools but I never had a lawn mower last longer than 3 seasons that why I went with a Honda 6 years ago.

How can a car's wheels not move while the engine is running AND engaged to the transmission? Shouldn't this damage the engine? For example, if I'm using automatic transmission and I shift into drive, the transmission should be engaged, right? But the car doesn't move unless I step on the accelerator even when the engine runs. Another example is when I'm driving up a steep hill and I step on the accelerator slightly. The engine will rev up, but the car will stay in place or even go backwards. How is this even possible without the engine, gears, axles, etc. getting destroyed?

No this is normal, What is working here is the torque converter. It takes the place of a clutch in a manual transmission. It is like a centrifugal clutch you would find on an old mini bike, go cart, or lawn mower. Inside the torque converter their are two opposing turbines that resemble the turbines of a jet engine. Submerged in oil, when the engine spins the turbines are rushed with oil, turning the turbines. These are splined into shafts from the transmission now turning the input shaft making the car go. When the engine is running, the car is in gear, and your foot on teh brake with the car at a stop, their is NOTHING in the transmission that is moving, except the pump. I tried to explain this as simply as I can, if you want a more in depth on how a transmission and torque converter works, let me know..

I have a pretty big yard ( 1.5 acres) and with steep hills. I need advice on which riding lawn mower to buy. Of course one that will not roll over easly.

Need help with mushrooms growing all over my lawn?

Almost overnight, I suddenly have had mushrooms sprout all over my front lawn. I have small round brown ones scattered, and large rippled white ones growing along with a few other different kinds. My front yard is on a very steep hill and its always sunny since there are no trees. How can I stop them from growing or kill them? I live in Colorado around Denver if that makes a difference.

Enjoy them. I used to live in Denver. It is so dry usually that mushrooms come and go in a day or two at the most. But I see your problem.

They grow mostly on cellulose matter, but nitrogen will sometimes spur their growth. If you use a fertilizer or mulch or compost on the lawn, then stop. If there are leaves from the trees, or too much shading, consider getting rid of the trees. If you use a mulching mower, that leaves cellulose on the ground.

Like I said, this is not a long term problem in Denver. I guess you have had a lot of rain this year, which is the root of the problem. Rake them up once and you might never see them again.

Here is another thing you can try. They like an acidic environment, so if you have wood ash or know someone who does, scatter that on your lawn very lightly, maybe a little more heavily where you have had mushrooms come up. Wood ash has extremely high pH. Higher than baking soda.

why am i so sore after cutting the grass?

okay so i was paid 20 bucks by my dad to mow our lawn and me have a lot of yard with some big steep hills and no riding lawn mower. so i do it then i come inside and get something to snack on. i feel sore because my stomach was hurting so i flexed and my stomach muscles where hurting really bad then my shoulder then my back. im only 14 but do u think i strained my muscles while mowing?

NO I think you may have used some muscles that you don't normally use (by texting on your cell or playing video games on the couch) But if you keep active those muscles won't stay sore for long. Your rider does not have the same type of suspension as a car so it will tend to "jerk" you around a bit more also. If this is a problem ask your dad if you can do the lawn with a self propelled "push mower" instead but then your legs might be sore from walking (up and down those big hills) Best that you ask for a raise for doing this chore maybe like $25 instead?....R

Glyphosate (Roundup) or BrushBGon will kill everything they touch. If it's feasible, get the area bush-hogged beforehand and immediately treat. This will make cleanup easier, but it's not necessary. Very stubborn brush may take a second treatment.
