craftsman lawn mower operating basics?

dncer228

ok so my fiance is in canada until Monday on a fishing trip and the grass in our backyard is as tall as my head (and i'm 5"1) lol!! my kids can't even play outside until I clean the yard up.

I want to surprise him and cut the grass myself. now i'm not an idiot so I know that I have to pull start it (gas mower).

it's a craftsman eagle one 6.5 mower. my dad taught me how to mow the grass when I was about 13 so I kind of know what I'm doing.

our mower doesn't have a bag on it so I won't have to worry about emptying it. it has a pull bar and an engine engage switch-what are these used for?

i'm assuming the pull bar is to lift the blades up when going over sidewalks, porches, etc. but not sure. and i'm pretty sure the engage switch is to put the mower into drive.

a little basic instruction would be greatly appreciated!!!
if we had the manual, i wouldn't have to ask the question (but thank you)

and the pull bar isn't loose

Answer
Read the manual.
The pull bar is a safety the mower will not run with it loose.

How many residential lawns in USA or Canada? Any clues appreciated!?

PictureCha

Seeking statistics on number of residential lawns also residential driveways in either USA or Canada.

Answer
don't have exact answer you want but here are some facts

It has been calculated that the average American lawn receives four
times the volume of chemical applications as an average farm field.

25 percent of the air pollution in the state of California is generated by two-cycle engines, primarily lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and other lawn care machinery

Americans now devote about 40,000 square miles to lawns (more than we use for wheat, corn, or even tobacco)

America has 58 million lawn owners

Americans mow 31 million acres of lawn every year. It takes 300 million gallons of gas and 1 billion hours to complete the chore. And for this privilege they will spend $17.4 billion on everything from pesticides (70 million pounds) to lawn tractors.

turf is the largest irrigated crop in America and 5,000 new acres are planted daily.

Will reversing battery cables on a 15.5 H.P. Briggs and Stratton riding lawn mower damage the starter?

peaceplusp

I can't seem to get the engine to turn over fast enough to see if it will start. When the battery had low voltage, I mistakenly reversed the cables briefly. The battery sat out in the shop all winter with no servicing. How do you test a battery? Bring it to a shop I guess. The mower is about 15 years old. The engine model is 28N707. Who sells cheap starters for them? I'm in Canada.

Answer
It will not hurt the starter, in fact the starter will not see any voltage. You have to have the key in the start position to put voltage to the starter. You have to perform a load test on the battery and that is usually done at a shop. Down here Auto Zone does it for free. You can use jumper cables from the tractor to your pickup or other good battery, just make sure you hook the cables up correctly and don't let them touch the tractor.

Any good jobs for someone at the age of 13?

Mumbo

I'm 13 years old looking for a job in NY. My brother has already saved up $500, and I only have $90 at the moment. I really need to make more money so I can buy my family a dog, we've been wanting one but we haven't had the money to pay for one. Please, if you know any jobs taking 13 year old's please tell me.

Answer
Here's a short list of jobs in the U.S., Canada and Europe which you can create to generate income:

1. Learn calligraphy so that you can provide handwritten invitations and thank you notes to prospective wedding parties, birthday celebrations, etc. Seek out clients through wedding planners at nearby churches and temples. A starter calligraphy kit usually runs around $20 and anyone can easily pick up this skill. The going rate is usually $1 per hand addressed item.

2. Seek from your neighbors a gardner position which involves planting, weed removal, plant/tree trimming, light brush clearance. You will be using the neighbor's equipment and tools. Again, do not represent yourself as a lawn mower since there are any number of safety issues involved. A door-to-door solicitation of surrounding neighbors is required and you can charge between $6 to $9 per hour.

3. Offer policing/removal or clearance of trash services to surrounding neighbors which involve trash pickup within nearby residential area. Limit the extent of pickup to small areas and be aware that there are no hazardous terrain or elements involved in this process. Again, a door-to-door solicitation of neighbors is in order. You can charge between $6.75 to $7.50 per hour.

4. Acquire a set of window cleaning tools [a bucket, liquid window cleaner, sponge, squeegee, handle with an extension and a small step ladder] and solicit local businesses for your window cleaning services. However, be careful to limit the height of the window cleaning to no higher than one story. Charge $1 per window panel.

5. Visit your nearest beauty salon and ask to be trained as a shampoo person who is also willing to sweep up fallen hair on the ground and do set ups [arranging dye kits, curler holders, etc.] for a set hourly fee.

6. Become a sign flipper by contacting your nearest realtor. A flipper is someone who stands at a major intersection and flips a "For Lease/Rental" sign in order to attract visitors to an open house or to a particular real estate listing. The hourly pay is at least the minimum wage.

7. Why not become a paid feeder servicing the disabled at nearby nursing, convalescent, assisted living/care centers and hospitals. It involves feeding food to patients who are unable to feed themselves. The starting rate is $8.00 per hour. The only downside is that one has to take precautions to wash one's hands after each feeding. A posting of your services [by a business card or flyer] on a reviewable bulletin board would be enough to generate customers. The paid feeder position is one of the fastest growing occupation at this time.

Good luck!

why is construction material cheaper in the US as compared to Canada?

My neighbours have bought PVC fences by driving to Minot at almost half the price what they would have paid in Canada ? why is that ?

Answer
Sometimes its based on volume (the big US stores have more purchasing power than the equivalent Canadian chains in many cases). Soem things are only available in the US because they may not meet Canadian standards, and the Canadian product is more because of the increased standard required (a lot of small engine products like lawn mowers, generators, etc fit in this category.) Manufacturing costs in the US tend to be lower than Canada for many products. The really interesting thing though, is that a lot of wood products come from Canada, and are available for less in the US than in the country of origin. Go figure...

how should i care for my lawn when spring arrives?

Pierre T

hi all,

i moved into a newly built house last year with the sod laid down on june of last year. as a new home owner i was unaware of the maintenance required by achieving a lush green lawn. i did not fertilize the lawn last year which i think i should have in the fall??? living in canada, the snow is all melted and now there tons of dead grass built up. i removed the dead grass carefully with a rake. some spots are green but i'd say 80% of my small lawn is brown. not sure what the grass breed is but i don't think its anything fancy like blue grass, probably good enough for the builder to be able to save money.

can anyone give me recommendations as to how i can achieve a nice green lawn?
do i water first to moisten soil?
do i water, aerate and fertilize or vice versa?
what kind of fertilizer numbers or brand would be recommended for my situation?

much thanks all!!! =D

Answer
I would be a little careful about aerating, certainly using a machine to do it, because your sod may not have settled, your grass may not have rooted, and aeration may just dig up too much ground (also, beware of companies that do this -- some create disasters).

If I were you, I would scrap off any dead grass and other debris -- which you have done -- and sprinkle the lawn with sheep manure, top soil, compost, or a combination of any two or the three. If necessary, use your mixture to fill any holes, dents or seam lines in the lawn. Water if you like, or just wait for a good rain. After a good watering, or a good rain -- but being sure a heavy rain is not forecast -- sow your grass seed. You can do this by hand -- there is no need for fancy equipment. After this, if you do not get rain in a couple days, water lightly, and do that regularly.

There is really not a great need for fertilizer -- if you sow grass seed regularly and water regularly, your lawn will be fine. Also, in place of fertilizer, sprinkle your lawn with a good manure or a compost twice a year. In a year consider using a roller after a good rain or watering, to level the ground.

Of course, if your builder's landscaper did a really bad job, you may need to consider a serious re-seeding, or laying of new sod, and/or a serious fertilizing.

Your lawn does sound in worse condition that long established ones like mine. I have a nice green lawn right now, and have had to mow and clip several times already. Still, give it time, your grass is new, and not fully established. Again, if you do not get a decent amount of rain, be sure to water, as well as doing all of the above, and you should be fine.

Take a good look at your lawn regularly, and it will tell you what it needs. To be sure that the sod has well and truly taken, make sure that there are no seams, and certainly no browning at the seams. If there are bald patches, you need to scrape and do a spot aeration with a rake, and then sprinkle with some soil/compost and seed the area, and keep it watered for several days. If the lawn is doing badly over-all you may need to take a serious corrective step.

Oh, one more thing: if the lawn is healthy enough, mow it regularly, so that the grass clippings can be mulched back into the lawn (as opposed to having to be collected). Grass is like any other plant -- reducing growth above ground encourages growth below ground, and that is what you want. If the lawn cannot tolerate having a power mower running over it, then get a push mower.

Good luck.

How could one learn to work on an engine?

celtica311

All engine types ranging from lawn mowers to trucks.
I know how engines work.

My school does not offer a course in any type of mechanics.

Answer
Get an auto mechanics textbook. Try the local library first. Also check the yellow pages; there may be a bookstore dealing with auto-related books, or go to car parts swapmeets. Read trade magazines like MOTOR. Asking at a local repair shop might get you a stack of greasy back issues. (I'm tempted to suggest a book called "The Joy Of Automobile Repair", but it's very dated, unless you only plan to work on cars from before the '80s. Worth reading, though, if you find it in the library. A lot of the basic stuff hasn't changed, and there's plenty of practical advice.)

Buy an adequate to decent set of tools. Craftsman is a safe bet. (In Canada, Canadian Tire has "Mastercraft", which has a replacement guarantee like Craftsman, and is frequently on sale with whopping discounts.) If possible, get a tool chest to store and organize them.

Hang out and help a more knowledgeable friend, family member, or neighbour. You can pick up a lot of useful tips. If possible, get a part-time job, or even work for free at a shop under a real mechanic.

Buy a project car, truck, bike, or lawnmower, and get it running. You can probably score a non-running mower or garden tractor for nothing: Place a "wanted" notice on Freecycle or a local bulletin board. Or bicycle around the neighbourhood, and if you see something neglected in a yard, knock on the door and ask.

Download the English TV show "The Garage"... while there's a lot of pointless drama, they do show some real life vehicle problems and the joys of fixing them.

Can my lawn mower cause a fire?

Nicole

I just finished mowing my aunt's lawn for her. The lawn mower was still hot when I put it in the garage. But, I closed the garage and left. Is there any chance for a fire or anything bad happening?? Thanks.

Answer
Nicole

Good question, I used to wonder that myself, until I found out first hand. I was in the buisness of cutting lawn for people, just myself and my pick-up truck. I was cutting my first lawn of the day. The mower was working hard because the lawn was large, and the grass was tall. I sensed that the engine was getting hot, but I didn't think it would catch on fire.

I had stopped the mower to go to my pick-up when the coustomer started yelling for me. My mower was burning! The engine had gotten so hot, it lit the dry grass on top of the deck on fire. Wow! I managed to get it out before the whole thing blew up, and I finished the lawn, but it was a really, really close call. The mower suffered 3rd degree burns on the deck. I had to spray paint it later to make it look better.

So the answer is Definetly YES, a lawn mower can cause a fire. Once your done, they should be cleaned, top and bottom. Then allowed to cool down before stored in a garage. It dosen't take more than 10 minutes for a lawn mower to cool down. So theres no big rush.

By the way, good for you for cutting your Aunties lawn!
