lawn mower only runs with choke open?

musicislif

first of all, before i diagnosed this as being the issue, i completelty dissasembled the whole engine, and reassembled it. Ive cleaned the vlaves thoroughly and i grinded the exhaust valve just a hare as i was pretty sure there was an issue with compression and via the info ive found online i thought that would cure it. but it still does the same thing it did before i did any work, which is only starting for 2-3 seconds IF i prime the hell out of it. but i recently found that if i keep the choke wide open it will run, and run good. but as soon as the choke is closed to normal position, it dies.

and yes, ive replaced the needle, spring, and seat in the carb and have made sure that the jet in the hex bolt is clean. this pariticular carb works just fine on my other identical mower (4.5hp tecuseh), so i have to doubt that the issue lies within the carb.

the only thing else i can think of is a possible air leak somewhere, but all of the gaskets looked just fine and intact when I put everything back together. COULD this issue be a symptom of an air leak???

Any Ideas or thoughts will be much appreciated. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!
in response to mustangers answer....im a little confused. if the choke is left "open" while using the mower, allowing maximum amount of air in, this seems like it would cause a lot of unnecessary wear on the engine, not to mention a waste of gas. wouldnt this be like revving the engine non-stop?? it makes more sense to me to let more air in in order to start it and get it going, then back it off to a normal idleing speed. im only cutting the grass here, not racing it........That is how i position the choke when using the other identical mower, and it works fine that way.

And if im wrong (which i may very well be) the engine should still run, if not start, with the choke in the closed positon which it is not doing. Thanks again everyone!

Answer
Well, you've got the choke open and choke closed idea backwards. Choke open is the normal running position. Choke closed closes of the air supply and puts more gas into the engine.

Now to answer the question, I'll bet if you go get a $4 carburetor diaphragm gasket, the engine will run just fine. Have you checked the key in the flywheel? Sometimes they will be partially sheared and it throws the ignition timing off. But I am thinking it is definitely an air leak issue. Maybe the tank has a crack in it where the carb screws on? I have seen that before and the cracks can be hard to see. One way to find it if you want to go through the trouble, get some india ink (art supply stor will have it) and put on the suspected area of the crack, wipe it off and put some baby powder over the entire area. The baby powder will draw the ink out of the crack and it will show up plain as the nose on your face. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the head gasket is not sealing.

If and when you do find out what is going on, please update. Interesting question.

What the best transmission for a 20HP motorcycle build?

Kyle

I'm building a motorcycle useing a 20 horse diesel off a lawn mower I plan on making it chain driven and I know the transmission need to have a 90° turn in it

Answer
Local diesel conversions have been using Harley transmissions and Yanmar diesels, a couple used Haatz engines and again the Harley tranny. The Harley big twin tranny from 1950s on up is a separated unit with a clutch pack, chain or belt primary drive good for 175 to 100 hp. The other separably trannies maybe used are BMW and Moto Guzzi- these are the shaft drives and will have the clutch pack on the tractor engine used- adapters may be made- the old VW engine into /2, /5 transmission had adaptor kit circular at many BMW dealers- but alignment on that kind of set up will be tighter tolerance than the Harley with chain or belt primary coupling. Older english cycles had separate engine and transmissions until mid 1960s, then went unit construction except for Enfield, Matchless-- early Triumph and later Enfields are hard to find- but note the Indian made Enfields are using somediesell engines of 300 to 500cc - a 425 Landini gardentractorr/utility seems to fit into Enfield frame and connect to the tranny fairly well, is a common swap in India and some other countries that can get the Indian made old design cycle tranny and the Italian engine.

What is the price of a basic manual lawn mower in India?

ashankha

I have a small lawn about 150 sq ft. Looking for a cheap manual lawn mower. Where can I get a manual lawn mower in Kolkata?

Answer
Sure, it's called Shudra. Get some of those and some scissors. Scissors are easy enough to find, as far as the Shudra, you'd know better than I where to get some. You could try getting some old style Paraiyar, but everyone has "put on airs" and you'd be hard pressed to find any that actually admitted to being Paraiyar. You're looking at maybe 1000-2000 rupee to get started and then about 300-500 each time you need it cut. Do you have access to sheep or goats? That's another option. Real cheap.

Crankshaft - Blade protective assembly for lawn mowers?

WizardofID

Hi, I'm trying to put together my own lawn mower for pulling behind my 35hp old tractor. I'm from India and nobody makes powered tow-able mowers here. I have a 12hp diesel engine from an old pump which I can mount onto a deck. My family's property has very tall grass but also has hidden rocks. I wanted to know,
1. what's the best way to make sure that the blade or crankshaft do not get damaged when the blade hits a rock?
2. I'll import 20"+ blades, what are the best mulching and regular cutting blades you recommend?
3. How do you adjust cutting height? In some areas we want it tall, at others a close cut. Is this done at the crankshaft spindle, or
4. What's a recommended cutting RPM? I'll need this to decide if I have to gear or pulley down the speed from engine RPM or take a direct drive.

Answer
You pose some very good questions. I'll do what I can to answer them.

1. Not knowing how many blades you are using, the best way to keep the crankshaft of the engine protected is belt driving the mower. As far as protecting the blades and arbor shafts from rocks, maybe shear keys in the pulleys? But that could be extremely time consuming.

2. Get the ones that will fit your arbor shafts. Don't get the fancy curved ones, they are a pain to sharpen. Get ones that the cutting edge is flat.

3. The easiest way to adjust would be to adjust the deck its self. That way when you have the blades even, you don't have to mess with them. So adjusting the wheels holding the deck up would be the best.

4. Most small engines run about 3400 RPM. Here in the US the highest speed the tip of the blade can go is 19,500 feet per minute. So that means a 20 inch blade can go 310 RPM, a 21 inch blade goes 295 RPM, and a 22 inch blade goes 282 RPM.

I hope this helps.

What all things should I see for before buying a dog?

shubham s

I am buying a choclate labrador from apet shop(reputed one) ....he is saying will take me to the breeder and he is aka or whatever it is registered...will give me my puppy with breed certificate and papers and first vaccination...
Plz tell me what all things I should do before buying it and what all things should I see for...and also I am gonna house train him only(advises needed)
And what is the best lab food available in india..

Answer
A play pen or a puppy pen are really handy as they keep your puppy safe and out of trouble but they still get to be near you.
Of course you will need a collar,
lead (light weight),
lots of toys (only give him access to a couple at a time so he doesnt get bored of them.)
Crate (optional) good for house training and to sleep in. make sure you get one big enough for the grown do and section it off for now.
food and water bowls
Kennel or bed

when buying him you want to see that he is healthy, check his eyes and ears for any problems, feel him all over checking for any lumps or bumps and fleas while seeing if he is happy for his body to be handled.
If he is with other litter mates, see how he acts with them. Is he always the first to eat and start play time etc? then you might have a dominant dog on your hands and have your work cut out for you. Dont assume that if the puppy is sleeping that it will be a calm dog.

For house training, if you have a crate, after a long period of time confined, take him straight out to the desired toilet area and say "go pee!" if your puppy does pee, make sure you give him LOTS of praise. Never punish your dog for peeing inside or rub his face in it for this will only make the problem worse while loosing your dogs trust.
After feeding, sleeping or drinking, always make sure you take your puppy to the toilet area and make sure you go frequently as they can not hold on for long periods (this time will increase as they grow)

You will want to socialize your puppy as soon as you have finished all the puppy vaccs (ask your vet for when this will be) at such a young age, it is a crutial time for them to meet new dogs and people. You want to introduce them to as MANY sights sounds dogs and people as you can a day, try 100 a week. Sights sounds and objects could mean reflections, vacuum cleaners, brooms, lawn mowers, and moving things like cars bikes and skate boards. You want them to meet a variety of people such as young kids to the elderly. You want them to play with all kinds of dogs big and small and you want to take them to as many places as you can so they can be comfortable in the world areound them. Also it can be really helpful if you introduce them to other animals like cats rabbits and maybe even horses or cows.

You will also want to do some basic obedience like learning sit, lay down, wait, no, stay etc and this can be taught as soo as you get it. look up videos on how to teach these if you dont know.

Good luck :)

How can you practice acting at home?

Akeem

I can't afford a acting class right now, so are there any exercises I can practice at home?

Answer
I'm in acting class, I'll be able to help you!
What we do, is when we get scripts, (you can get one at your school or public library or what I like to do is look up movie scripts online!) start out reading each line slow to fast, opposite, and loud to whisper, opposite. Another great way my teacher told me is a good actor starts out with actions. So the beggining of the year we only wrote Pantomimes ( hope I spelled that right) which is scripts with stage directions or Monolugue. It tells you what the setting is, when the actor cries/smiles/jumps/etc. and what the actor does such as mowing the lawn and then struggingly fixes the suddenenly broken lawn mower. Once you can do that, you are ready to act with actuall scripts. the part where the actor talks is called Dialogue.
Excercises we do is sitting or standing in a circle and calling out movie quotes one person at a time, but you only get a few seconds to say something before you get kicked out and the circle goes smaller.

The next Excersice we do (U might need a friend for this one, or write a list on a peice of paper) is our teacher yells out random things like AIRPLANE! ZOMBIES! RUN! SKIP! WAITER! ROYAL BALL! SWASHBUCKLING PIRATES! etc. and we act like we are the character he says.

Another one we do is; A person is chosen to say any letter. (the object of the game is to figure out what word the previos person is trying to spell and you try to continue that word with the letter you choose) the next person says a reasonable letter to continue the word until the word is complete. (note: the word almost always changes than the intended word)

My favorite excersize is when a person names a category such as countries. every1 starts in a circle with one hand up. the 1st person brings thier arm down and points to another person and says "India!" that person then says any other country besides "India" and you play a few times until you got it down. Now you add another category and play that a few times. after that you do both at the same time. ( there must be different starters for each category in order to do this) you just keep adding and see how far you can go.

sorry i don't have any one person games.

aaaaaaaaaaand ACTION!
