Should extended warranty be bought for a new riding lawn mower?

T E

The manufacturer has a 2 yrs warranty for major components (engine, transmission), and 90 days for everything else. The retailer sells an extended warranty of 2 additional years (i.e., 4 yrs in total) for 10% of the price.

A riding lawn mower is one of the easiest broken down household items?

Answer
I've never seen an extended warranty that was worth the price. Any defects are going to break within the first 90 days. After that, it's up to you to keep up with your regular maintenance. If you do, the parts that are covered by the warranty probably won't break. The parts that do need to be replaced are the parts subject to normal wear and tear, and won't be covered anyway. Hope this helps.

Gardena lawn mower - is it any good?

The Divine

I need to buy a new lawnmower and I've been looking at the Gardena 12V cordless lawnmower. Has anyone used it, and what did you think if you have?

Just to note: I have a perfectly flat yard (like a pancake run over by a steamroller) roughly 45 x 100 feet plus an 8 x 45 boulevard to mow.

Answer
~ Here are reviews on the Gardena mower you are looking for. http://reviews.homedepot.ca/1998/941025/reviews.htm

According to consumer search http://www.consumersearch.com/www/lawn_and_garden/lawn-mower-reviews/
, the cordless Black & Decker CMM1200 actually does a better job than most corded electric mowers, mulching more effectively and cutting more evenly. It can mow up to about 1/3 acre on one battery charge. The CMM1200 has a folding handle, one-lever height adjustment and a polymer deck with lifetime warranty. The downside is that it costs more than a corded mower, and you'll need to buy a new battery in a couple of years.

whta is the best lawn mower under 500$?

zzees

Just a standard walk/push mower.
Gas mower.

Answer
Craftsman, for my personal experience is probably the worst lawn mower known to man. I would suggest one of the Toro Personal paces. You lean into it and it goes faster. Hard to explain it without sounding like a regular push mower. Comes in handy on hills though. Push on the mower and it goes faster. On the backside of the hill, it won't drag you down. Good on gas milage. I believe they are putting out mowers that are 6.75 HP which for most residential mowers is PLENTY.

Just FYI, Home Depot probably has the best selection of good mowers. Until you talk about yard machines. They're cheap and they come with a warranty but you will definately need it. The Toro that I told you about you shouldn't have too many problems if its maintained well. Its the most bang for your buck mower you could ever get.

ethanol gasoline will it hurt my lawn mower?

curious ge

I have a fairly new Sears (Craftsman) mower.
Are there additives to correct problems caused by 10% ethanol mixtures?

Answer
Standard 10% ethanol gasoline (the type you purchase at the pump) will NOT hurt your lawn mower. (Applys to both 2 stroke and 4 stroke motors.)

Manufacturers of small engines realize that up to a 10% blend of ethanol is very common in gasoline, so they make their engines compatible with this fuel.

Many gas stations such as Race Trac, QT, along with many others have been selling us, the public 10% ethanol gasoline mix for decades. The only difference in straight gasoline and gasoline mixed with ethanol is that they burn at a slightly higher temperature . But, today's engines are all designed to run at hotter tempertures than what they are rated for. In fact, ethanol fuel provides a slight increase in power when compared to power generated from straight gasoline.

You can ask a Sears service center near you if it's okay or not, if it makes you feel better, but I've been burning ethanol mix in my Craftsman mowers for years.

As far as Sears voiding your mowers warranty if you use ethanol fuel, it will not.

As far as burning Super unleaded in your mower, this, in comparison would be far more damaging then an ethanol fuel would be. Even though running a higher octane premium fuel through your lawnmower wouldn't hurt it, it would still run at a higher temperture then it would if it was burning a 10% ethanol unleaded gasoline. Very few lawnmowers are designed to take a premium fuel, so I'd save your extra pennies and opt for the regular fuel.

Note: My comments DO NOT refer to the new fuel, recently being pushed by our Congress, E85. The E85 fuel is a specially designed fuel mixture to help us (U.S.), become less dependent on foreign crude oil. The auto manufactures are receiving large government grants in order to produce, what's known as, "FFV" (Flexible Fuel Vehicles). These are vehicles that are designed to run on a fuel mixture made up of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. The use of E85 fuel alternative in a non-FFV will void all manufacturer's warranties and cause permanent damage to your engine, large and small.

Take care and happy mowing.

when is the best time to purchase a riding lawn mower?

I am contemplating purchasing a riding lawn mower. When is the best time of year to make this type of purchase and from what store? Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, etc.?

Answer
You will get the best prices in the fall after lawn mowing season is over and before the next year's models hit the floor. Dealers are trying to get rid of their inventory. Prices are generally higher at the brand name lawn equipment shops and Sears, Lowe's, etc. all honor warranties just as well, or sometimes better than the lawn equipment dealers.

Would you buy a 3 yr service contract for a craftsman mower?

happydawg

I went to Sears and picked out a lawn mower. They sold a 3 yr contract to me which the guy said would take care of maintenance on the filter and other things such as belts etc... without a service call.
Would you have bought it? I am very unknowledgable when it comes to lawn tractors, and would never be able to replace or fix anything.

Answer
I totally understand the philosophy of not getting the contract because it's the thought that the store is making money on it. But, what happens when you buy this stuff and it goes bad? We normally refused those but take them on some things now. Things are made SOOOO cheaply these days. Even doing your research and buying what you think is a reputable thing, you still get stuck with lemons.

My husband and I are handy people and take very good care of our stuff (regular maintenance, cleaning etc.) but we have had so many things go out on us...
-telephones-Had 3 break within 1 month (2 Sonys and 1 other brand-can't remember what it was). Finally Best Buy just gave us our money back so we would just go away instead of store credit.
-2003 Camry-Both power locks went out, had to replace something with the steering, the dome light went out and the fuel pump went out. It doesn't even have 50k on it.
-2007 Craftsman rider-Clutch went out after 9 hours.
-Panasonic vcr-went out 2 days before the 90 warranty
-Raite mp3 player-worked 3 times before it went out
-Maytag dishwasher-first one never worked, second one has a faulty door and the third one has a handle that is wearing out - only 1 year old

These are just the things I can think of at the moment, not trying to rant or anything, just pointing out how things are not made to last any longer. It's definitely a throw away society where it is cheaper to buy a new crappy one than to fix the old one. So, if it gives you peace of mind to have the warranty, be happy with it and ride on! ;)

Sorry to keep asking ( am new at this and do not know how to reply without ending my question. My Bolens riding lawn mower does not want to start and trans seems to be stuck. Have tried new battery, carb and fuel cleaning, did get it to start when I jumped the slenoid for only a few seconds, lights do not even come on anymore and it did at the beginning of season. I really apprecaite the answers given thus far and there are two that seems to want to help. I am sorry for repeating this question but do not know how to reply without closing the question out. Please any real help would be mostly apprecaited. When it did start it moved a small bit ( hard) then seemed as though it would not go in gear.
572ci. if you could reply again I would most greatly appreicate it, you have been the one that seems to to most helpful. I am not mechaincally inclined but can do some things if explained to me. The swtich does not want to work either ( that is why I jumoed the solenoid ( it worked before) I am not sure where else to check ( oh yeah did check fuse under seat and it seems to be fine ( not blown)
Not sure what I did ( disconnected one set of wires ( two together and runs to a larger group they were white and yellow) took carb filter off and it started up ( but only with taking screw driver to selnoid) It got my grass most of the way cut ( belt broke, go figure lol). When I got thur I reconnected the wires and tried to start still nothing ( unless I do the screw driver thing with the selnoid, even the headlights worked this time). Guess I have to get new selnoid ( whew, at least I can cut my grass ( after fighting to get new belt on). With the filter on carb it did not want to start, without it it seems ok ( guess I have to ask what causes that).
Wanted to say thank you for your patience and time and if you know anything else please tell me.
Thanks a billion for all your help. You have been so nice and great information, 572ci. I would like to tell you there need to be more people that are as helpful as you.

Answer
Ok, it started saying to me, its getting spark, cleaning the carb takes a good soak in a bath type carb cleaner and blow out with carb cleaner, even then you can sometimes not get it. These bolens are a mtd made machine (I'm not a fan of em) and use various transmissions, some variable drives, most are shift on the go's..., could have a slipping belt to little or no fluid in the trans, if it has a hydro, they are picky and need that fluid even worse. Also the engine could have a low oil switch (these are picky as well) make sure the oils to the full mark. It has a new battery, the lights on newer ones should be run off the engines alternator... so it most likely needs to be running, but make sure any and all fuses are not blown. NOW, it is more then likely a over head valve engine, if its catching on the compression stroke any? then have the valves adjusted... but jumping the solenoid sounds like the solenoid could have gone bad or its a kill switch.... these things are even cheaper made today and can go like that.... hope this helps..
and if it has a extended warranty, USE IT!! just to make sure.... pull the kill wire off the ignition coil so switches are disabled, if it starts, pop the plug wire off the plug to kill it. And if it did start, one of the switchs are bad.

Filter was probablly clogged..... reinstall a new briggs original filter. I've had bad experiences with aftermarket...... as for the solenoid, sounds like you do..... they are cheap.. around 12 bucks.... and for the wire... http://www.tulsaenginewarehouse.com/drawings/allwiring.pdf
this is basic wiring, sounds like you probablly pulled the kill wire, unless it started with that wire hooked back up, and filter off. btw, the lights should run when the engines running... also make sure the filter is installed the right way.

pros and cons of an electric start lawn mower?

antiquegal

need to buy a new lawn mower, thinking of one with an electric start, good idea or not

Answer
It all depends on you. I'll list a few things to help you decide

Cons:
1.) Its another thing that can go wrong.
2.) You need to have an electrical plug near where you store the mower. (At least on the Toro and Lawnboy units)
3.) Risk of the gears involved in the starting going bad.
4.) Over time the battery will fail, and it is expensive to be replaced.

Pros:
1). No string to pull!
2.) There is a recoil start as a back-up.
3.) No throwing out your back to start.
4.) Prime, turn the key and go!

The battery should last for at least 5 years or more. On the Toro and LawnBoy units, you plug it into the wall once a month, overnight. They do not charge themselves.

My personal recommendation would be the Toro 20074 Recycler w/ Personal Pace and Electric start. You can find your nearest Toro dealer by using the dealer locator on http://www.toro.com or they have this unit at Home Depot for $399. It has a 2 year Guaranteed to Start warranty with it.

How Is it possible to burn out all the oil in a lawn mower in 6 months?

best lawn mower warranty image

jhcalgirl

Bought a Poulan lawn mower in April filled it with oil and started mowing, and burnt out the engine, it has a 1 year warranty. Repair shop said they won`t replace or repair under warranty, plus we owe them for the service.

Answer
You should check the oil level every time you start the mower.

The repair shop isn't trying to "screw" you. The oil may not have burned out, but if you had a leak, it could have leaked out.

Running a lawnmower without oil will destroy it in about 3-5 minutes, less if it's really hot.

Chalk it up as a life lesson, and read and study the owner's manual more carefully the next time.
