What is the best way to convert a gas powered lawn mower to electric power? Best batteries?

justwannak

The yard I mow with the mower I want to convert is almost 5 acres. What's the ideal mower to use for converting purposes?

Answer
Any mower will do.
There is 2 ways of doing this.
First is to take a riding lawn mower and remove the engine and axle. Replace the axle with an electric transaxle (These are quite common these day), look for one that is minimum 1000 to 1200 watts. You will need a motor controller for this and throttle (There are foot pedal throttles.), make sure the controller has a reverse function on it. Then you will need a motor (At least 1hp to run the blades - single blde of 36", 2hp for multiple blades)

or, use a lawn mower that has a hydrualic transaxle (very common these days) on it. This way you don't have to purchase a new axle and controller. With this you will need at least a 3hp DC motor that runs at 3500-3700rpm.

Most mowers now use a belt system to transfer power from the motor to the axle and blades.

Now batteries.....this is where it gets expensive. It needs batteries that have a high amp output(Discharge rate), with a high aH (Amp Hour)..and if you use a 24, 36 or 48DC motor, these can range from $300 to $1000 each. (i.e. golf cart batteries which are generally 6 volts). Or you can go for some exoctic battery packs, but these can run $1200 - $3000.

This is why the major manufactuers like Deere don't have any models really to speak of. It's not the cost of manufacturing the battery riding mower, which is about the same as a gas mower, but it is the cost of the batteries. (Say a $1400 riding gas mower, would be about $3500 - $4500 as a battery mower.)

There are some great sites out there for batteries and motors. You can search under "EV", electric vehichle supplies.

By the way, I am making a riding battery lawn mower for myself right now for my 2 acres.

My lawn mower stalls out right after I take my foot off the brake. It is a Craftsman LT 1000.?

DJ

It starts right up and remains running fine, but as soon as I take my foot off the brake to take off it stalls out. Have never had any problem before.

Answer
I've got one of these mowers, look underneath the seat where the battery is located, theres a grey safety plug that when you get off the seat it auto shuts off for safety, it could of gotten loose or broke, or just popped out, this always happens on ours. You could either just tape it so its always on or replace the plug.

Its part #29 on this: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Craftsman-Parts/Riding-mower-tractor-Parts/Model-917273399/0247/1509200/P0408051/00001

Lawn Mower Poll...?

J F

I about to buy a lawn mower, I am looking at either a High End Troy-Build XP or John Deere JS25... Any Suggestions? I am looking to stay around $400.00....

Answer
Go with the deere. If you want something better I suggest a snapper just because Deeres are a pain in the ass to work on. You can get a snapper anywhere from 475-$1000. Depends on what you want to use it for.

The Wilson Manufacturing Company uses a machine to stamp out parts for lawn mowers. On average, the machine will produce 7 defective parts for each 1,000 made. Using a direct variation formula, determine the number of defective parts that would be expected if the machine produced 7,000 parts.

Answer
Hi,
The direct variation formula is y = kx, where k is the constant of variation. In this case, the parts made is "x" and the defectives is "y." Plug your given points in to find the constant of variation.

7 = 1000k
1000k = 7
k = 7/1000

So now you found your constant of variation. You have also created your equation. Plug 7,000 for x to find out the number of defectives for the new one.

y = 7/1000 * 7000
y = 49

So if the machine produced 7,000 parts, 49 would be defective.

I have a small lawn about 150 sq ft. Looking for a cheap manual lawn mower. Where can I get a manual lawn mower in Kolkata?

Answer
Sure, it's called Shudra. Get some of those and some scissors. Scissors are easy enough to find, as far as the Shudra, you'd know better than I where to get some. You could try getting some old style Paraiyar, but everyone has "put on airs" and you'd be hard pressed to find any that actually admitted to being Paraiyar. You're looking at maybe 1000-2000 rupee to get started and then about 300-500 each time you need it cut. Do you have access to sheep or goats? That's another option. Real cheap.

How much motor oil do I need to refill this lawn mower?

chasvanblo

I am fully changing the old motor oil in my CRAFTSMAN Rotary Lawn mower.
This 625-series, Briggs & Stratton motor turns a 22 inch blade to a side-discharge.

I need to know how much (I am using 30 weight) motor oil I need to buy to fully refill this motor after I drain it.
Thanks for knowledgeable replies.

Answer
Sir;
For security reasons Unplug the wire from the spark plug first.

On this type of engine you need to know that the drain plug is under the engine and you must have the engine high enough for you to be able to reach that plug.
I believe american ounces are the same as Canadian.
Just make sure you dealer can confirm this OK.
(( Do not Tilt the engine from side to side)) as the oil will go up the oil galleries and will foul the combustion chamber and you will not be able to start the Motor.

It is either a 1/4 inch drain plug hole where you will need an extension of about 6 inches long from a ratchet set to unscrew that plug.
On some briggs engines some drain plugs are to be removed with octagonal Type Allen wrench or a small straight Allen wrench where you will use a wrench to leverage the removal. _____!

Once the oil is drained re-install the plug Tight, Insert 15 and a Half ounces of SAE oil 30 (detergent) oil or 10w30 sae oil.
NEVER USE A NON DETERGENT OIL.
To make sure you have the right amount of oil use the dip stick half way in the fill up and you will see the indicator mark that it is missing or over filled. Overfilled by ( ½ ) an once is not to worry about.

That engine like I said takes 15 ½ ounces of oil. Or metric just about 750ml from a 1000 ml bottle.
Then reinsert your spark plug wire.
This should be done every 10 to fifteen hours of operation.
The same applies for the sharpening of the blade and the balance of the cutter.

How many times more intense than the 60-dB sound of a person talking loudly in the 100 dB sound of a power lawn mower?

Answer
10 decibels increase is a 10-fold increase in intensity
20 decibels is 10 times stronger than that (100-fold increase)
30 decibels is 1000 times stronger

etc etc etc

So you are going up by 40 dB. Figure out the increase.

Why wont my lawn mower start or turn or anything?

Alton

i was cutting the grass today on my ridding 18.5hp B&S huskee mower and it ran out of gas so i went to get gas for it, then i put gas in it, and it wouldn't turn, start or make any noise, so i decided to jump it and still nothing at all. gas does go to my carb. it just won't crank nor even try to do anything while i was jumping it. i tried taking the battery off and just hooking up my jumper cable to my positive and negative terminals, still nothing coming from a 1000 crank amps battery. i have a 20 amp fuse in it since its one of the newer models and its not broken.everything was working all well before it ran out of gas then i filled it up and wont turn, crank, or make a noise with and without jumping it.

Answer
Even on newer mowers, there is a breaking in process. Let the mower sit for 1/3 hour then try. If there is still nothing, check the oil filter, and the air intake filter. -Birdy (USA)

what are things my brother could make at home and sell on ebay?

Josh Carma

my 13 year old brother wants a dirt bike that's $1800 and i told him i'd get it for him if he put in $500. any ideas on how he could earn it without needing to walk the streets with a lawn mower?

Answer
To be honest, if there were anything you could make an sell on Ebay easily, people would have already flooded the site with an item like that. At a young age, nothing really beats mowing lawns. With most lawns averaging around $40-50 and only taking about an hour to an hour-and-a-half to mow, you have a job that will pay you around $35-40 an hour. Even if you only did one lawn a day, 5 days a week, you're going to make $800-1000 a month. That's really good money for someone that is only 13 years old and more than some part-time minimum wage people have after taxes.

He could also put out a flyer throughout his neighborhood offering to do small jobs. Raking leaves, weeding flower beds and even small painting projects are things that people need done and are sometimes too busy to do so they'll hire someone to do it while they are at work.
