Also, what are the pros and cons of each? We just purchased our first home and need to mow the lawn ASAP, but have no clue where to start looking for the information to help us make a decision. Thank you!

There are definitely pros and cons of each. I will not buy an electric cord mower because of the cord dragging around the yard and the fact that they are less powerful (lower hp, really lower torque). When your grass is thick or very long the extra power from a gas mower is definitely appreciated. I have not tried the battery powered and seems to be a novel idea because of the low noise. Not sure about the power associated with the battery powered. I have owned several gas mowers and have not ever had to mix oil and gas for the mower, so really just keeping a gas can around is the only issue.
The things I would look at is the size of your yard, any hills, location of electrical outlets.

electric lawn mowers?

Gasokine ate the carburertor of my gas mower. Is an electric mower a good alternative?
Answer
If you have a relatively small lawn or don't mind lashing around an extension cord then they're a great alternative to gas mowers.
Keep in mind that battery powered mowers will mow less and less as the batteries wear out so make sure you have a very healthy margin in the beginning so that you'll still be able to mow your entire yard in a few years. The batteries WILL need to be replaced at some point and that will be expensive but read up on battery care to maximize the lifespan based on what type of battery the mower comes with. Also keep in mind that the harder you make the mower work the quicker the batteries will degrade. Where as a gas mower just bogs down a battery powered mower will draw more amperage reaching towards the design limits of the battery.
Corded mowers will basically last forever but try to imagine having to constantly know where the cord is and switch around your mowing pattern to keep from having to constantly flip the cord out of the way.
