is Auto Motor Oil okay for Lawn Mowers?

Bobby Joe

i saw some oil at sears that said '' specially formulated for 4 cycle air cooled engines '' but is any 10w 30 car motor oil all right for a self propelled mower?

Answer
Yeah, specially formulated and specially high priced. My mower has been running on the same oil as I use in my car since I bought it in 1992. Worst thing for your mower is that @#$%&^ ethanol gas we're stuck with now. The alcohol content destroys the seals in the carbs on small engines. And if they go to 15% like they're talking about it will only get worse.

Why did motor oil mix with gas in lawn mower?

I have a craftsman walking mower that is the 550 series powered by Briggs and Stratton. For some odd reason the mower started blowing out white smoke from the exhaust with some black stuff spewing out. I thought it was motor oil and thought the mower was exhausted from the cutting off high grass. I decided to wait until morning and make sure it was cool before I finished. Now the mower won't even start and when I checked for gas the gas was greyish black with an oily feeling. Can someone please help?????

Answer
The oil and the gas should not be mixing. If this is happening this means you have a stuck float and/or needle and seat. You will need to drain the oil from the engine and drain the fuel. Clean the carburetor using an overhaul kit and carburetor/choke cleaner. Next fill with fresh fuel and oil. Take a look at the link below to help you clean the carburetor.
