Under $100 bucks, 5 mins to use, no cords or batteries and ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS.

my computer sounds like a lawn mower! What could it be?

When I turn my computer on it makes the most awful grinding noise. It only stays on for a very brief time, then shuts back off. It is 5 yr old VAIO. I am prepared to get a new one, but what in the world is wrong with this one?

A little more info would have gone a long way. From what you've said I could only guess that the hard drive is toast. The grinding noise is likely the head making contact with the platter. It's also known as a "head crash" it is physical and permanent damage. I see computers differently than many people who sell and repair PC's. To me, if you are happy with the PC (speed/performance) except for the current malfunction I say if it's under $200.00us to fix it go ahead and have it fixed. You can get a 160 GB hard drive these days under $100.00us which is likely way bigger than what it came with.
