Push (reel) mower and grass clippings?

White Pola

I use self-propelled mower. It cuts the grass into tiny pieces that fall back to the yard and decompose quickly, letting the nutruition back to the yard and redcue the needs for fertilizer.

Push (reel) mower is environmental friendly becasue it doesn't produce air and noise pollution. However, it doesn't cut the grass to pieces like the gas lawn-mower. Will it cause thatch problem if the grass left in the lawn?
This question really originated from a dicussion in the environment forum where people are asking how "green" a reel mower is. I am not planning to replace mine.

Answer
Thatch isn't cause by clippings, it is formed by a layer of dead roots and stems in an unhealthy lawn. The real mower should do just fine, as long as you don't wait until the grass is 6 inches high to mow it. I used one on my old lawn for several years and never had issues. I'd still use one, but I'm not about to try to mow an acre of grass with a push mower.

Lawn mower repair question?

BIKER DUDE

Typical Briggs and Stratton 6.25 HP walk behind mower. Hard to start and when I could get it to start it runs fine. After it gets hot it refuses to start. I took it partially apart today and did the basic things. Removed carb bowl. Made sure the valves in the bolt and the one running up were clear with a piece of wire. it wasn't at all varnished up. I cleaned the barely dirty air filter. Put a new spark plug in and gaped it properly. Cleaned the fly wheel with a light sand paper and also the contacts on the coil/magneto and they were a bit filthy. So naturally I figured I had this puppy whipped. I did manage to get it started and cut my grass. It didn't start nearly as easy as it should have. It took a lot of priming and a lot of pulls. After I cut the grass i let it set for about 20 minutes and tried to start it. after another round of about thirty pulls and some priming no go. it tries..so..I actually had it taken in for service last year because i was to busy. they said they replaced the coil/magneto. it did run OK until the the end of the season when the same crap started. Hard starts and no restart after use. The coil/magneto like i said was pretty filthy and I have a small yard. I cut around 14 to 16 times per year. About 1/8 acre. Is there a good way to bench test a coil/magneto? I hate to buy one for 30 bux and have the same problem. also it has good high test gas in it and I put a little gum out in it but the fuel system is clean and fine.
yea..also doesn't have the same oomph it had when it is running. Also a little miss. Well..it's going on 9'th year. average life span of a mower is 7 to 10 with proper care. The body and every thing else is in just such great shape. I don't think it's the carb. it's really clean and is getting plenty of fuel. I believe I'm down to the coil or possibly valve problems. and when I looked at how filthy that coil was I have a hard time believing it was replaced last year. I guess I should have looked. Of course it wouldn't hurt to mess with it some more. I'll just buy a new one and work on this one in my spare time. if I get it kickin good .. I'll sell it and recover some of my cash for the new one. thanks guys. A good used motor might be the answer if i can find one that will bolt up.

Answer
