My father in a few weeks will be having surgery to replace his aortic valuve and i will be taking care of him after. I wanted some advice for him and I on things that would make the recovery easier... I was thinking of buying him a recliner, my thought being getting in and out of bed may be difficult... Is he gonna have problems showering or dressing himself or will it just be a slow process? Maybe something to grip the clothes and pull them up? Any advice from caregivers and/or survivors would be greatly greatly appreciated

Answer
A recliner is nice, it is easier to sleep in an upright position after open heart surgery. Your father will sleep that way in the hospital for the week that he is there. You could also get a foam wedge pillow for in bed. That is what I used for 5 weeks after surgery. Getting out of bed or laying down positions is difficult as he can't use his arms due to a 5 pound limit.

You might want to experiment with putting a pillow under his head, and shoulders at home and in the hospital. When you lie back your shoulders pull back, and that can be uncomfortable. The first good night sleep without drugs I had was after adding pillows under the shoulders.

He may have trouble with spring loaded doors at places such as restaurants. There were a few restroom doors I couldn't open.

His upper stomach muscles are going to be a wreck for a few weeks. He will have trouble bending over. Putting socks and shoes on isn't harmful, but will feel painful for a time. If he leans back too far in a chair, can't use his arms to lean forward and his stomach muscle might not be able to pull him forward in the first 10 days after surgery. A helping hand on his back is useful at times.

Showering isn't a large issue usually. He will probably be able to do that almost like normal. Dressing also isn't an issue except for footwear. Button up shirts or tshirts, polo shirts made of stretchy cloth is easier to deal with, but normal tshirts weren't all that difficult either.

He won't be able to drive or even mow the lawn with a riding lawnmower. If he tries in the first 4 weeks he will put himself back into the hospital. I tried driving at 5 weeks. It wasn't easy. Also riding in a vehicle can make some people uncomfortable. The constant vibration can turn painful for some after a while. There is a big disagreement on this issue between patients as others loved going on long drives immediately after the surgery. Don't cause yourself more trouble, let him decide which category he is in.

Be mindful that he gets the exercise the hospital recommends. It is very necessary for a faster recovery. Get him into a cardiac rehab program if insurance will pay for it.

For the most part he will be able to do anything else. Think of his needs in terms of a five pound limit on his upper arms. He can't lift a gallon of milk, so get half gallon containers instead. If he is cooking, put the pans on the stove for him. How hard are the drawers to open that he might need access to?

And think of appointments after the surgery. Make sure they are scheduled as soon as possible. Before the surgery happens isn't a bad idea. He may have appointments with a cardiologist, primary care doctor, and physical therapy.

Be warned, if the surgery goes well he is likely to have more energy than you can remember him ever having. As time goes on he will be able to do more than he could in the past.

I apologize for any grammar errors. Off to bed I go. Good luck to you.

Cost to repair seized lawnmower motor?

I ran my oil too low in my Husquavarna riding mower with a Kohler Cougar 20 motor model SV600. It got the shakes and I shut it down, then wouldn't start again. I was able to free it a little turning the flywheel but I can feel where it catches and still won't start on its own. Any ideas what my stupidity is going to cost me?

Answer
You'll have to find out what sort of repairs it will need. Call some places that deal with Husqvarna riding mowers and inquire some costs, labor and parts.
Hope you have better luck
