what is the best lawnmower to buy?

saccharin

Answer
I use "Yardman" from Walmart and "White" from our hardware store, they run under $200 and bag, mulch and side discharge. the whites are better than the yardman because of the ball bearing wheels. if you are look for a self propelled mower, we have tried MACK form the semi tractor company (made by Ariens) but it lasted as long as the yardmans and whites do! I have used John Deere, Snapper, Murray, Sears and Toro, these machines (under our conditions) last no longer than Yardman or White. we mow 52 lawns a week verying in sizes from postage stamp lawns to one+ acre lawns and these mowers last one and a half seasons. figuring that in one week these mowers are used more than most are used in a year, and in SD where I live the lawn season lasts from early April to early November, these mowers LAST!

how do i change the oil on my lawnmower?

Q. oil change.

Answer
If this is a typical push-mower (not a riding type), there will be a drain plug on the bottom of the engine. It would be best to set the mower up on blocks, saw horses or whatever you can find to make it easy to get under it.

You will need a pan or bowl to catch the oil (about 1 quart). Remove the plug and the oil will drain out, replace the plug.
Put the mower on level ground and refill the oil. Newer mowers actually have a dipstick, older ones just have a small plug you remove and fill to a mark or groove (consult instruction manual if you have one). Most mowers will call for 30 weight oil.

Used oil should be taken to a recycling center or to any of the "quick lube" places.

Riding mower procedure is the same but some engines have the drain plug on the side of the engine near the bottom.

Considering that you paid $200 or more for the mower and a quart of oil is only about $2, it makes sense to change the oil often to keep the engine in good condition.
