i have a john Deere riding lawn mower and i was wondering how i am suppose to raise the blade to cut the grass a little longer

can i use any lawn mower blade?

i have a yard machines 21'' 4hp lawn mower. it is gas operated. i haven't sharpened the blades and i dont know how to sharpen so i need to buy a new blade. can i just buy any blade that is 21 inches?

Not typically. The center hole on blades differs. HHowever most places (think lLowe's walmart, etc) have cross reference charts for what blades fit what machine. Also, on the blade packs themselves it will say "Fits Yard Machines."
If in doubt take the blade off and take it in the store with you....
