What is the difference between a "ohv" and a "ohc" lawn mower engine?

David

is ohv more power and quite? how do i sharpen my lawn mower blade its getting dull HELP!

Answer
Ohv=overhead valves operated by the cam from below
Ohc=overhead cam operating valves below it
Ultimately, horsepower is dependant on many other design factors. Sharpening varies dependant upon the cutter style, either rotary or reel-type. General rule of thumb is to simply re-edge the factory bevel-use a diamond file with slow, deliberate strokes, removing the least amt. of metal while providing a fresh cutting edge.

Good Luck!

What type of mower blades should I use?

My lawn mowers blades are so dull all they do is flatten grass. How do I replace them and what brands do you recommend?

Answer
What ever type you buy, make sure you disconnect the spark plug before replacing.

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
They are priced as high as people are willing to pay, and unfortunately there are many people willing to pay way too much money for mowers. It's just simple economics. Too many financially irresponsible people encourage manufacturers and retailers to gouge us on prices.

Something I would recommend is buying slightly used equipment. People frequently buy more of a mower than they need or can afford and end up selling it only a year or two old. I buy almost all of my tools and equipment used. For example, I just bought a nearly brand new Cub Cadet with only 19 hours on it for $1,000 ($2,400 new price tag!).

Watch Craigslist and roadside for good, used equipment and don't support price gouging by buying overpriced new equipment.

I hope that helps. Peace!

Answer
Both of those prices are for "homeowner quality" mowers. Meant to be used once ,maybe twice a week to mow a small to medium sized yard.
If you do use them for your mowing business, figure on only getting one summer out of them.
Comercial mowers are way more expensive than the prices you have posted, but will last several years .
Just starting out, try to find some good used commercial mowers. Go talk to your local mower shops, look on craigslist, look for mowers at auctions.

I'll tell you the answer when I chose best answer.

Answer
Dog Shit
No lengthy, philosophical examination of dog shit would be complete without first pondering more existential questions like why dogs shit, and how. The answers may surprise and delight you. There are many interlocking components to the dog shit process. Food eaten by a dog (cupcakes, floppy disks, corn dogs, Vicodin) must first be processed into simpler, smaller elements suitable for delivery via the bloodstream to muscle and fatty tissue in the canine's body.

The digestive system of your dog begins at the lips and finishes under the tail, at a puckering donut-shaped curiosity scientists have nicknamed the anus. When you see a dog (or cat) who appears to be licking his or her own balls, it's more likely the animal is suffering from anal gland disease. Both the external anal sphincter and anal sac can become impacted or infected as the result of contaminants left behind by the anus, leading to feelings of pain and pressure best relieved by several hours of enthusiastic licking. The domesticated dog's alternative to licking is the act of scooting or scootching -- sliding one's anus across a coarse or thickly carpeted floor to soothe "itchy" feelings near the tail and hindquarters. Another reason for licking and scooting might be worms, a subject beyond the range of this modest tutorial. For those interested in further study, putting dog shit under a microscope can yield a full afternoon of excitement and wonder. Monocystis sporocysts are wiggly, protozoan parasites visible in the feces of dogs who have eaten infected earthworms.

Cells in a dog's body naturally generate waste by-products which must be eliminated through the kidneys, the lungs, the skin and digestive system. These organs are part of a larger excretory system. Of course, not everything a dog eats can be digested properly, or even used to store energy. The unwanted digestive material left behind on city sidewalks and community dog parks is called feces in America, and faeces to those residing in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Wales, or Scotland.

In Sydney, Australia, one can find over 100 tons of fresh dog shit dumped on the ground each day. Rich in phosphorous, Australian dog shit washes down hills after torrential rains, killing plant life.

There used to be an old joke: How do you tell an American in Paris? He's the one picking the shit up after his dog. Americans stopped picking up dog shit a long time ago, preferring instead to pantomime picking up dog shit when witnesses at the dog park are present but still too far away to see if there's really anything in your hand. It's been universally acknowledged that France has the worst metropolitan dog shit problem. Each day, Parisian sidewalks, alleys and gutters are choked to excess with ten tons of golden brown, oven-baked baguettes left behind by the city's 200,000 dogs. It's been estimated that in a single year, six hundred people break a limb after slipping on French dog shit -- and in recent years, failure-to-pick-up fines have grown to five hundred dollars per loaf.

And yes, in France there really is a Dog Shit Patrol: a subclass of the Parisian police force which manifests itself in a brigade of sixty-or-so green lawnmower motorcycles. These patrol vehicles search and scan for errant piles, circumnavigating city streets deemed most popular by tourists and politicians. Meanwhile, obese dogs are rapidly catching up to overweight French kids, with their sagging stomachs and bulging sides capable of depositing increasingly larger and more voluminous pockets of dog shit.

Every few months, dog shit gets tracked in by the news. Investigators discover "rooms filled with dog feces" in homes where neglected, emaciated children await rescue. Hundreds of animals are liberated from "cages lined with filthy dog droppings," in the homes of animal hoarders. Inevitably, whenever police storm into a person's home and encounter piles of garbage, the chances of discovering "piles of dog shit" are exponentially increased.

If you're an animal hoarder who resides in a rural apartment complex with a strict no-dogs-allowed policy, you can still get several hundred fake dogs. In its first week on the U.S. market, the Nintendo corporation sold a quarter-million units of Nintendogs: small, handheld devices which simulate the high-polygon dog ownership experience while tastefully eliminating the need for mylar poo bags.

If the idea of feeding, walking, and playing with fake dogs doesn't tickle your fancy, maybe you'd prefer a house full of fake dog shit, which comes in a variety of shapes. Machine-molded plastic dollops and rubberized poostuffs are key staples of novelty shops around the world. This "gag" gift makes it possible for apartment dwellers (or the financially disadvantaged) to circumvent traditional health code regulations and simulate the everyday presence of

Why do humans have to age and die?

Q. Why do people have to age and die? Why is the human lifespan set as it is and not 185 or 850 or 1000? Why does the body repair itself up to a certain point and then just shut down?
I didn't say "forever", I think it would be good to live considerably longer though, and what's wrong with being like China and putting restrictions on how many kids someone can have? You don't need a bunch of kids.

Answer
It is all very simple: The Cells replicate every seven years.
The mechanism by which the chromosomes are replicated cuts a piece off their ends every replication.

By the time that Human cells have replicated seven times, a protecting "inert" strip that is sacrificed with each replication, called a "telomere," is depleted, and thereafter, the ends of the chromosomes- which contain the genes that determine cell, tissue, and bodily structure is "bitten-off," so to speak, and everything you get thereafter is an inferior copy- which produces the phenomenon we call "aging."

I guarantee that scientists in the know are lying to their colleagues, when they say that they do not know how this mechanism works, and how to apply it to Humans.

My tribe has at least one working longevity technique: My grandfather died at 144 years. His father lived to be over 200 years. His father was reputedly over 300 years.
This is established as fact, because they were the kings of our tribes, and had access to resources not available to the common man. (E.g. In Polynesia, we hear that their kings have a special dish made out of the shoot of a palm tree; to eat it kills the whole tree. So no common man could eat such a meal.)

The longevity technique of the Yoruba tribe I belong to is much more disgusting than that. The king has some of his children killed, so that he can harvest their life force. It would appear that he needs to kill about one every decade.
One of us died the first decade. Then another in the second decade. Why this was so suspicious to me (who was the only idiot in our tribe, who did not know what was going on,) was that they were dead and buried before I even heard they were dead. (I live just 60 miles down the road.)

When my father (who had four new wives at the time, and numerous other children) threatened to kill me, his second eldest son, I escaped for my life, and began to research everything I could find out about sorcery. Being born in England, I knew nothing about our tribal belief system. My mother was very little help to me, being dead at his hands. His reward for murdering her- the first woman of our tribal group to have the guts to secure a divorce- was to be chosen king over his brother.

By a string of coincidences, I was guided to obtain the books of Carlos Castaneda. These opened my eyes to what had been going on around me since I came to this accursed country. A number of ignoramuses and liars have discredited this work in this forum. I want you to know that they are lying. many unknowingly, but some surely knowingly.

In THE SECOND RING OF POWER, Carlos Castaneda described how an apprentice, Pablito, was in danger of being killed by his own sorcerous mother, Dona Soledad, who stood to gain spiritual enormous power should she kill him- which would enable her to "lawnmower" the other members of the group, including Maria Elena and Carlos Castaneda. This was exactly the situation I grew up under.

There are adepts of various secretive societies (e.g. Freemasonry, Mormonism, Rosicrucianism,) who know all about this stuff, and want to keep it from the public, because if it came to light that they knew all about it all along, and did not warn their own people- even used it against them- it could go very hard against them. This is why, when someone asks the "wrong question," they have teams to come out and smother the truth.

The Nagual Julian, Don Juan's master, was a master of The Gait of Power, and with it he could change his body's age to be young or old at will. Don Juan, however, had changed his body eleven times, to remain youthful enough to complete his task. These options are available. Telekinesis is the key to molecularly rewriting the telomeres, repairing chromosome damage, and prolonging youthfulness as long as one wants.

Those who say that Mankind should have only a few decades to live are quite welcome to practice their beliefs all they want, in their graves. They should not be allowed to discourage and drag the rest of us down. Those of us who want Immortality should just go on and attain it.

Anyone interested in discussing this further and seriously, and contact me in my online group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/objectivechristianity/join

Im 14 years old and am looking to start a lawn mowing buisness this spring. Although, i have no idea what kind of lawn mower to get (push, ride on, etc.) as well as what brand to get. Also how much should i charge per lawn? Last thing, whatelse besides lawn mowing should i offer to clients?
thankyouu, all answers are appreciated.

Answer
A riding lawnmower will do larger yards faster, but you have to consider how to get it to your job site. If you live in a city and the lots are small, go with a push mower because you can get closer to fences and around trees. You might also want to offer trim hedges. You could consider doing evergreen trees shaping them, if you can find some to practice on.

How can you make your own lawn roller/striper for push mower?

best lawn mower with roller image

baseball5

Has anyone made this before and do you have any ideas or tips? I can only find information on the web for making it for a riding mower. Thanks

Answer
Here's some basic rules to follow when you make one. You want to make one that rolls not one that you drag behind. You'll end up dragging the cut grass. It will need enough weight to bend the grass. It will need to be as wide as your mower's blades. Attach the roller to your mower's arms at the lowest point just above the deck with metal or wood bars, not chains. It could roll into the blades that way when you have to back up. your mower will have to have a bagger or mulching blades with the side covered. Throwing cut grass over the area you just rolled will loose it's look.

3" Schedual 40 PVC pipe filled with concrete with a 1/4" steel screw bar set in the center is a good way. 3" steel pipe thats 1/4" thick is also a good roller.

I have Bermuda grass and a front roller mower, how can I make my grass putting grass (really short)?

I want to have a putting green effect on my lawn. Thanks!

Answer
Gradually lower the mowing height of the mower. Mow every morning when you reach the desired height. Usually 225mm. Regular rolling with a heavy duty roller, Verticutting and top dressing two times a year. It's alot of work to keep a putting green.

How often to change oil on zero turn mower?

blazkiar

I have cub cadet zero turn lawn mower. Manual says to change oil every 100 engine hrs. This season I only used for like 20 hr. Doeas this mean that i can use for 5yr without an oil change. My gut tells me that i should change oil and filter every seasn b/c oil has a life span of about 6 months. Any answer will be appreciated.

Answer
At the start of the season, change the oil and spark plug. You also want to drain the fuel tank at the end of a season and let it run all of the fuel out of the carb to get a fresh start for the following next season.

Why would a Toro lawn mower won't keep running?

ltlkhan

This Toro Personal Pace lawn mower was left with fuel for a year or two. I cleaned the carburetor, replaced the oil, replaced the spark plug, checked the air filter, and put new gas. When I use starting fluid or prime 5-10 times, it starts. But it won't keep running. It dies after few seconds.

What could be the problem? Please help!

Answer
It sounds like you did everything necessary to get it running after it sitting around for that amount of time. I would bring it to the Toro dealer. Its probably something you just can't do on your own.

Hi, I spent several hours digging these wild onions up last year but they are now back and worse than ever.

Answer
Chemical Method

Make a bunch of donut-shaped plastic lawn protectors. Each should be about a foot square (no reason to make it round) with a small hole cut in the middle. Make a "crochet hook" from a hanger. The hook must fit through the hole.

This works best if you follow these two rules:

1. Before cutting the grass in the spring so that the weed sticks up from the other grass.
2. When there is no wind.

You can cheat on rule 1, but cheating on rule two is at your peril.

To use, I place a folded protector so that the hole is next to the target weed and use the "crochet hook" to snag the weed and pull its leaves through the hole. Donât make the hole larger than it needs to be to get the leaves through easily. Lay the plastic flat on the lawn so that it protects the good grass.

I use a sponge brush to apply roundup (cheap ones available in the paint department). Barely dip the sponge so that the roundup does not drip. Stroke all of the exposed leaves. Spraying will almost certainly get some of the roundup on your lawn. and you will get dead spots. If your grass is St. Augustine or Bermuda, the dead spots can be quite large. They usually donât last more than a month or two, however.

Leave the plastic protectors in place for at least 30 minutes while the roundup is absorbed, then remove them. If you reuse the plastic protectors, make certain there is a clear upside and downside marker on each one. A small printed sticker works well. If you see the print on the sticker, the correct side is up.

No Chemicals, HEAT Method

If you donât like to use a chemical, you can do a lot with a piece of black plastic sheeting, 30 pound felt, or an asphalt shingle. Cut a square of the black material larger than the area with weeds. Use a sheer to cut the leaves that will be under the square close to the ground. Cover the area with the square, and use nails to pin the square to the ground. The sun will heat the square and the ground and prevent air from getting to the grass. Leave the square in place for two or so weeks of good sunny days. This can even kill weed seeds if it lets the ground get hot enough. When the plants under the square are dead, remove the square and the dead plant material. St. Augustine, Zoysia, and Bermuda will quickly fill the square, but other grasses must be seeded into the area. Make certain you count every nail as you insert it and remove it so that you get every one. You don't want a mower to pick one up!

Does it matter if I bag grass clippings when I mow a Zoysia lawn?

Andrew A

I have a standard self-propelled mower with bag. Recently I've just been mowing with the "trap door" in the back shut and no bag.

Will this damage my lawn? Does it matter for this type of grass in particular?

Answer
Some people do not like to see the dead clippings lying on the grass. It does not harm the grass to do this and provides mulch and as it deteriorates, adds nutrients. Zoysia grass is very thick so you will probably be emptying the bag quite often.

I don't know the name of it. It's just a riding lawn mower...not zero turn or anything special. It has been used for less than 50 hours.

Answer
I have a blue book for lawn equipment, but I need much more information. I either need the model number or size of the engine, size of the deck, type of engine, and so forth to accurately give you a price. I have values from $230 to $1300 for Snapper in 2002.

Is it possible to flush out diesel fuel in a gasoline lawn mower engine without buying a new lawn mower?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Answer
Yes you can do it! You didn't say if it's a push or a rider, either way it's simple! If you have a push mower first remove the air filter, tip the mower over (with a bucket under to catch the diesel) getting as much out as possable. Some engine oil will run out that's why you removed the air filter to keep oil out of the element. Refill the tank with fresh gasoline. You may have to use a starting fluid (sparingly) to counteract the diesel in the carb, but it will start. run the tank dry and you should be over the crisis of diesel fuel. Oh don't forget to replace the clean air filter!

what kind of gas do you use in a new kohler engine lawn mower?

Susan

It is a new Lawn Boy mower bought at Home Depot.
I heard on the radio that the unleaded gas with ethanol is bad for mowers.

Answer
Hi Susan

If you can buy 100 percent gasoline, that is what you should use. It runs better and is not as bad about gumming up your carburetor as ethanol gas is. There is a station near me that has non ethanol gasoline so there are a few around. If you are going to store your mower over the winter it is best to add an additive to prolong the fuel's life. A couple of these are STP fuel treatment, Sta-bil.

Hope this helps

my lawn mower has trouble starting and blows out smoke?

Q. i have a push mower. the average nothing fancy..
i have had it since maybe april 2011 and its sept. 2012... i dont know much bout lawn mowers just tryna get rid of grass...
since ive started using this year at the begining when i turn it on it blows out lots of smoke but after a minute it is normal...
and also i usualy have troubl starting it cuz the blades at the bottom usually get stuck so before i turn on the mower i usualy have to spin the blades a few times with my hand..
so basicly th proble is smoke at the start and blades dont move properly.. at the start..

plz help thnx allot

Answer
Please don't move the blades with your hand unless the spark plug is disconnected from the magneto wire. If the dead-man's switch has failed (very possible) the mower could start and chop off your hand or fingers very quickly, even with just one compression.

The smoke probably happens because the mower is tilted a certain way while spinning the blades. Oil gets into the combustion chamber and has to be burned off. Try tilting the mower away from the muffler next time (lift up the muffler side) and it will probably smoke less. Mowing on steep hills can also cause this.

As far as the blade, it might've hit a rock and is off-balance. Take off the blade and grind with a dremel until you can balance the blade with one finger at the center (where the bolt goes). Dents in the housing might also need to be hammered out or debris removed from the shaft (nylon ropes, tough weeds, etc.)

Slum Lords. Do I have the right to take action?

cuteybaby_

So. Here is my story.

I moved in the my first ever apartment, I have been living here going on 3 years on March 10th, 2012.
My landlady at first was great, she was told me that if I was a few days late on payment, just to message her and she would have no problems. Also if I wanted to "fix" up the place she would take it out of our rent for the next months.

I knew moving into the place, it wasn't in that great of shape. It was an old home, made into a duplex. I had the top floor, there was another couple below me that had been living in this apartment for a few years. There is a busted window in one of the rooms that I noticed, I had asked in the beginning to have it replaced; but till this day never has. I understand now. She's a slumlord...and things started to happen rapidly with no actions.

First, my contract states, she provided a lawn mower and we the tenants were to mow. She had a rusted mower, I asked for it to be replaced. That was 2 1/2 years ago. It still has yet to be replaced.

That is a small tid bit of things wrong with this place..But my main concern now is. I have put up with so much things that have been addressed to have fixed, however never has there actually been any action towards any of it. And if so, its been months down the road. But now I have a problem that I don't think I could just let go, which I need someones help. So I turned to ask the question to you guys.

4 weeks ago, our drain in the basement started to back up. Now its complete sewage from our house, the pipes are copper and never been replaced in the house at all; they are busted. Because of this, the sewage from the house is poured into the basement. Well it had become so bad, that it flooded the basement to the stairs. It stayed like this for a week and a half. I called my Landlady, first time, no response. Next day. Called. She answer, saying she would have a plumber out as soon as possible. By this time, the stench from the basement of our own feces, urine, and other fluids of such started to seep into the pipes, making the bathroom, kitchen areas smell horrible. It cause us eventually to get sick. Plumber came two days later, drained our basement; but left what had been in the water sitting on the floor. Landlady calls, asking us to tell her what it looked like; I responded by stating someone of professional standards needed to be hired to disinfect the basement, the smell was still there. She returned said she will get it cleaned as soon as possible. It has now been another week and five days...the problem is still there. I complained once again for the health risk, she told us to leave if it was a hazard and go someone to stay. She has told us she can't find someone to clean it, so she is asking us to clean it up for a discount on our rent... I believe we are not responsible for having to clean it up. We have had to tolerate the smell already and have gotten sick from the bacteria of our own sewage, our washer and dryer are down there; laundry was not an option for the smell.
Sadly it had not been the first time it had flooded in the basement, this would be the third time.

Do I have any legal actions or anything to make my landlord understand that, making your tenants live in such conditions is uncalled for. There are broken windows, broken pipes, lawn never mowed for we can't mow it, no lawn mower. I pay 600 a month plus electric, and see now results in fixing anything breaking down. Stairs are collapsing to get to the door, stink bugs get in every corners of the house threw broken door, and none of this was caused by us at all; it was previously like this. Now I understand I knew a few things were now perfect in this house, but I believe for paying so much money it can be fixed up?

What do I do? If anyone has any answers or direction I can take. I"m just tired of asking and asking to have something more livable and only getting the run around; is she in breach of anything? I live in PA so if anyone knows the laws or actions I can take. Please....Im desperate!

Thank you, Hailey.

Answer
You cannot "force" them to fix things, but you can be relieved of any duty to pay rent until they do. Unfortunately, if it is bad enough, you can also be administratively evicted from a condemned building (as opposed to judicially evicted under complaint by the landlord), so you'd need a new place to live.

Steep hill with wild raspberry bushes, weeds and small maple trees that started growing from the seeds of a nearby adult tree. Lawn mower cuts off when trying to mow it down, and a weed whacker is a joke. What is the cheapest thing to dump on this hill so that all life (including grass) ceases to exist?

Answer
Glyphosate (Roundup) or BrushBGon will kill everything they touch. If it's feasible, get the area bush-hogged beforehand and immediately treat. This will make cleanup easier, but it's not necessary. Very stubborn brush may take a second treatment.

What is the best mower to use on a very steep slope in my yard?

lawn mower

I am in the market for a new lawn mower. I want to buy one that can handle a hill that is 145 feet wide and goes up 20 feet over a 40 foot span...it's very steep. Is there a self-propelled mower that I could buy that can handle this job, or should I give in and hire a lawn service?

Answer
Get a Honda self-propelled walk behind mower. A 4 cycle lawnmower is better for steep hills, been doing this for 25 years. Anything else is big or too expensive, like a riding mower 54inch cut, you can't roll it. When using a riding mower, ride up and down the hill diagonally each way and everytime for the best and safest cuts.

I'm going to purchase a lawn tractor with my tax refund. I do not need much, my lawn is only 0.5 acres. I would also like to use a snow blade to clear my drive, which is small and flat. I know they aren't the real deal, but would I really need more than the tractors found at Home Depot or Lowes? I see that the Cub Cadets have Kohler engines compared to the Briggs found in the John Deeres. Any suggestions?

Answer
I have been looking at Sears tractors. It's like a 4500 series,21 hp Kohler or Briggs.(46" deck). I've always had good luck with Briggs engines. I have a Murray tractor with a 11 hp. Briggs that is 28 years old. This was the last of the old cast iron engines. I don't know how much snow you are going to push, the main problem is traction. I had to make a set of chains to fit my tires, and got along. I know the old time Kohler engines were good. I've had a couple of welders with Kohler engines. Parts are pricey. I think all these new engines are throw away anyway. It cost so much for parts, you can buy a new engine cheaper.

I personally don't like the looks of the cadet. Must be the color combination.

Good Luck

How often do you have to mow acreage with a zero-turn riding lawnmower?

zazoo

I heard that zero-turn riding lawnmowers (i.e. Swisher ZT2560) are much cheaper than diesel tractors and can still mow acreage (5+ acres) with ease. But my question is, how long can you wait between mowings? Can you wait 3 weeks between mowings, or will the grass grow so long that you will need tractor+brushhog to mow it?

Answer
It all depends on what type of grass you have.

For example, in the Pacific Northwest, we have a lot of Rye-grass and Fescue grasses, which thrive at 2-3 inches of height, anything less and the grass dies.

I would always try to mow when the grass is 33% more than the peak height of your grass. So for me, I tend to mow the grass when it is about 4 and a half inches high. In this way, you are getting the best part of the grass, the top third (which stores all the nutrients) and put it back into your lawn, thus making it grow stronger.

Hope this helps! It might help to find out what type of grass you have. There are many different websites for telling you what type of grass your area has the most of.

My riding mower is scalping yard on uneven ground?

Dave B

Found two springs in yard but don't know where these would go. Mower is a year old.

Answer
The springs were probably for your deck height adjustment. If that is out of wack then you will scalp the lawn. Also if you hit something the deck might not be level any more. Something as simple as an ant hill could put your deck out of level. Most of the time the warranty covers defects only not user error. That would have to be determined to see if warranty covers it or not

How many amps is needed for a good electric lawn mower?

best lawn mower electric on Mascot 21 Push lawn Mower | Sharpening Kit | Best Reel Mower
best lawn mower electric image

We've got a very small yard of bermuda grass. We're currently shopping for electric lawn mowers, but don't know what an acceptable amount of amps would be? We saw one in our price range with 6.5 amps, but for $40 more, we can get a 9 amp mower. Is there a big difference between the two? Would I need more amps? And is it worth the $40 price difference? Thanks so much!

Answer
With your very small yard you will not need the higher amp model. You need to keep the grass at a reasonable height each time you mow. In other words do not let it get too long before you mow. That is what will cause a strain on the smaller motor. The difference between the two motors you are looking at is very small. The 6.5 amp is approximately 1/2 horsepower and the 9 amp is approximately 3/4 horsepower. So that is very little difference. I think you should save the 40 bucks for something else. Can I use a smaller-gauge extension cord than is recommended for my electric lawn mower?

J.

The owner's manual of my 13-amp electric lawn mower says that if I use a 50-foot extension cord, it must be 16-gauge. If I use a 100-foot extension cord, it must be 14-gauge. And if I use a 150-foot extension cord, it must be 12-gauge.

My question is: Can I use a 100-foot 12-gauge extension cord? Will it be inadequate, or perhaps too adequate?

Answer
Yes, based on the parameters you describe, a 100 foot 12 gauge wire is fine.

Here's why. The issue is the voltage that will be presented to the electric lawn mower itself. The torque produce by the mower motor is proportional to the square of the voltage at the motor terminals. That voltage will be the voltage at the receptacle MINUS the voltage drop in the cable.

Now, the numerical gauge (size) of a wire is inverted - that is, larger conductors have smaller gauge numbers, so a 12 gauge wire is physically larger than a 14 gauge wire, etc. And the resistance in the wire is inversely proportional to wire diameter - so a smaller wire has more resistance. And if the wire has more resistance, then there will be more voltage drop in the wire.

So when the manufacturer tells you that you can use a 150ft 12 gauge extension cord, what he is saying is that the voltage that will be present at the lawn mower end of that cable will be sufficient to produce the torque required to cut grass based on the expected voltage drop in that cable. A 100 ft 12gauge cable will have about 2/3 the voltage drop of a 150 foot cable. So the shorter cable will be fine.

I have a model 917.252530 craftsman riding lawn mower. I bought the deck cam roller kit for a 42" deck the kit is no.151785. It does not show how to replace these springs. I have looked all over the internet inc. sears web site and cannot find a picture that you can see! Can you help?

Answer
I looked at my sear's tractor and it doesn't have the same springs. I went to the sears parts site and the photo of the deck there is iffy at best. You couldn't even tell if both sides used the same type of spring. I know the springs on my deck don't provide a lot of tension on the brake arms but I couldn't find a good diagram either. I am lucky here because I have a local shop that would show me how they go. Hope you get it figured out. Sorry I couldn't help.

what are some cheap putting green lawn mowers?

soCleen

im planning to build a putting green in my backyard this spring. Im going to use bent grass, and I need a mower. definitely looking to spend under 300$ for the mower.

Answer
Because it needs mowing everyday at 250 mm (3/16) you will need a greens mower with a heavy steel drum roller and grass catcher. It's a very expensive mower. Start calling golf courses to see if any have used ones for sale. Also call John Deere and Toro for refurbished lease greens mowers.

Are the Craftsman lawn tractors a good reliable mower? I do have some uneven ground to mow.?

Answer
Before you buy ask the following question. "If I need it serviced, do you do the repairs here or do you send it away?" The answer will almost always be they send it away. Being an independent dealer, I see a lot of Craftsman mowers for repair, the tractors are good, but the mower decks leave a lot to be desired. The running joke in here is to call them "Crapsman" Like most everything branded under a Sears name, someone else makes the mowers for them and that is Husqvarna. I know their prices are very attractive, and the mowers look sharp, but check out an independent dealer first before you buy from Sears, and ask to see if they have anything that would work for you.

LAWN MOWERS...what do you recommend? Front Propelled? Rear Propelled? Craftsman?

lady_bella

Needing to buy a new lawn mower this weekend. Do the bigger rear wheels make it easier for going over thicker grass? Our lawn has thick areas and thin areas and the ground is a bit uneven in some places too.
What do you suggest?

Thank you.

Answer
Susie Q knows her mowers.. One of thee best is Toro. And you should get a "rear" wheel drive also as opposed to a "front" wheel drive. The reason being, is with a front wheel drive, if you have to lift the deck to mow around tree wells or corners, you will lift your drive wheels off of the ground, making you to have to "push" through the turn. This sucks, as I have used the front wheel variety a few times (not by my choice). One poster stated above that it is easier to "reverse" and backup with a front wheel drive and this practice should "Never" be done and is a safety hazard. What happens if you should trip? You will be pulling the mower back over your legs! Not good.... You should only mow in the "forward" direction at all times... Hope this answers your question...

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.
