how do determine the best lawn mower in california?

LaShonda W

Need to buy a new lawn mower that is easy for a woman and/or adolescent to operate. Need easy start mechanism and easy operation of mower body.

Answer
Well, Consumer Reports just did a rating on lawn mowers in their May 2007 issue. It seems that the self-propelled mowers are much more repair prone than push types though they are easier to operate. Lawn Boy is reported as being the most repair prone push mower brand. Here are their best buys for small, level laws (like we have in CA) Cub cadet, craftsman, Black & Decker and Homelite. They seem to like the cub cadet because it is lighter, combines mowing with fine bagging and a premium engine. Among the electric mowers they like the Black & Decker.

The Toro, Craftsman and Yard Machines come with electric starting.

I have a Neuton battery powered lawn mower and I love it. It's really quiet and lightweight. It would be great for a small yard. Here's the link:

Honda, John Deere or Snapper for quality self-propelled gas lawn mower?

Craig Lee

I'm looking for a lawn mower for a house I just bought. The total area for the yards is fairly large (over 1/4 acre) and irregularly shaped. So, a corded mower is probably not a good option. Also, I don't think it's really big enough to justify a riding mower. The mower brands that seem to have caught my attention are Honda, John Deere and Snapper. I'm looking for a high end self-propelled gas lawn mower and was looking for any comments on these brands. Thanks for your input.

Answer
Snapper is a proven winner and parts are easy to obtain. John Deere has been around for a long time however, parts and quality can still be 'suspect'.
Honda is a great mower although I recommend pirchasing it from a genuine dealer (instead of Home Depot) as they're just not the same.

Where can i find parts diagrams for Honda lawn mowers?

dee

Answer
Try looking for Honda dealerships on line WWW.Honda Lawn Mowers.com. Or you can look in the yellow pages for Honda dealerships they may be able to help!!!Your lawn mower must have a cereal number on it you'll need that to purchase the right diagrams. Hope this Helps!!!

i have a poulan xt pxt12538 lawn tractor from home depot?

SHEEPDOG

i want a mulch block kit and i found one by looking on google but i don't remember where i saw it and i can't find it again. also, no-one seems to know anything about this mower since it was made for home depot and they are worse than useless about any parts or accessories. i would prefer a bagger but the price is too much so i would settle for a mulch block kit. any one have any ideas where i can find stuff for this tractor ?

Answer
This tractor is the worse tractor they sell by far. I work for Home Depot and to my knowledge, they don't make a mulch kit for this mower. If you get one for the Ariens mower of the same size deck, it will fit your deck. That would be the best rout to go. You can find them on their web site.

Does Home Depot repair lawn mowers?

quizzy

I was wondering if I could bring it there and get it fixed.

Answer
On power equipment, HD sends the product "out for repair". If the unit falls within warranty there's no charge. If not, there's usually a diagnostic fee to find out the problem, then the customer can either pay to get it fixed, or take the broken unit back. In many cases, it is in the best interest of the customer to take the unit to the authorized repair shop directly to save time.

I am buying a self propelled lawn mower and would like to know which is better... rear or front wheel drive.?

Rear wheel drive is MUCH better especially if you will buy one that has the oversized rear wheels

lawn mowers?

THERESA LE

I cant decide which mower to purchase. I want to know rear wheel vs. front wheel, and how good are personal pace mowers. Im considering a toro.

Answer
Since you are considering a self propelled mower, I have found that stopping a rear wheel drive requires disengaging the drive wheels (may be as simple as releasing a lever, but still an active motion) while stopping a front wheel drive is as simple as lifting the front wheels off the ground (pushing down on the handle raises the wheels, the same action you use to turn the mower), the wheels still turn but don't pull the mower.
Unless you are interested in demonstrating your physical prowess, the self propelled mower makes the job a lot easier, especially in the tall weeds.
For features, consider a rear bagger unit which can bag the clippings, or bag left detached can mulch the clippings.
Also think about starting options -- look for an easy start (push a primer bulb 5 times and pull the starter cord) or an electric start (battery or 110v) which takes the muscle out of it.
Or if you have a small plot, consider the new cordless electrics which are lighter, no starting, and "green".
--------
Bin There, It is helpful to read the question and who is posing it. I could be wrong, but I somehow don't believe that THERESA LE V will be begging her wife for a new one. . .

Why is my lawn mower hard to push?

Jane

It's self-propelled so it shouldn't be as difficult as it is. I've had it for several years. I think maybe it needs to be cleaned out around the wheels and the blade. How would I go about doing this?

Answer
Tip the lawn mower on it's side and take a look and see if there is a drive belt going from the crankshaft ( that holds the blade) to the axle that your drive wheels are on. Then see if there is any grass build up around it and glean and then check the tension on belt it maybe slipping .

My self-propelled lawn mower has to be pushed!?

Matrix

The engine of the Honda lawn mower starts and runs perfect but it has to be pushed. It started doing this last year but now it's terrible. The cable was out to the end of the adjustment so I replaced it and that didn't help one bit. What else could it be?
It's got a belt that seems OK. It could be stretched, but how do you tell. If it's the transmission, I'll junk it.

Answer
I agree with the first poster, your belt is off. Turn the mower over and you will see that between the blades and the motor is a pulley. That pulley should have a belt around it that travels to another pulley between the rear wheels.

The 'clutch' so to speak is basically a lever that pushes or pulls the belt tighter, the tighter the belt, the faster the wheels turn.

Between the rear wheels is a small box that transfers power from the pulley on top of it to the axle. It is possible that this box (called a trans axle) is broken and can no longer transfer the power. If the belt moves the pulley on top of the trans axle and it still does not go, that is the issue.

Crankshaft - Blade protective assembly for lawn mowers?

WizardofID

Hi, I'm trying to put together my own lawn mower for pulling behind my 35hp old tractor. I'm from India and nobody makes powered tow-able mowers here. I have a 12hp diesel engine from an old pump which I can mount onto a deck. My family's property has very tall grass but also has hidden rocks. I wanted to know,
1. what's the best way to make sure that the blade or crankshaft do not get damaged when the blade hits a rock?
2. I'll import 20"+ blades, what are the best mulching and regular cutting blades you recommend?
3. How do you adjust cutting height? In some areas we want it tall, at others a close cut. Is this done at the crankshaft spindle, or
4. What's a recommended cutting RPM? I'll need this to decide if I have to gear or pulley down the speed from engine RPM or take a direct drive.

Answer
You pose some very good questions. I'll do what I can to answer them.

1. Not knowing how many blades you are using, the best way to keep the crankshaft of the engine protected is belt driving the mower. As far as protecting the blades and arbor shafts from rocks, maybe shear keys in the pulleys? But that could be extremely time consuming.

2. Get the ones that will fit your arbor shafts. Don't get the fancy curved ones, they are a pain to sharpen. Get ones that the cutting edge is flat.

3. The easiest way to adjust would be to adjust the deck its self. That way when you have the blades even, you don't have to mess with them. So adjusting the wheels holding the deck up would be the best.

4. Most small engines run about 3400 RPM. Here in the US the highest speed the tip of the blade can go is 19,500 feet per minute. So that means a 20 inch blade can go 310 RPM, a 21 inch blade goes 295 RPM, and a 22 inch blade goes 282 RPM.

I hope this helps.

information on lawn mower blades?

Robert S

looking for any information on the Gator Mulcher Blade for a 30in rider verses the regular mulching blade

Answer
The teeth on them help chop / mulch grass clippings and leaves.
I find they work well ONLY when the blades are sharp. Dulled in the least, they cut poorly. I suspect aerodynamics as the cause..

Lawn mower problems!?

jesse-w---

Ok im only 14 i couldent find anywhere that would let a 14 year old work and i found a lawn mower our neighbors threw out so i decided to go around mowing yards. i changed the oil, carburator, gas, air cleaner, fuel line, spark plug, and pull rope. It was running good but yesterday i was working on it and the only way to get it to start is to set it to medium throttle and as soon as it starts it shuts off. So i put it at medium throttle again and as soon as it starts you have to switch it to full throttle. i dont get it, it shouldent be run ning like this, BTW its a craftsman 22" mulcher push mower with a 5.5 horse tecumseh motor.

Answer
What the first answerer was referring to is the primer. It sends a bit of gas into the combustion chamber to coat (or prime) it.

I don't know if you've tried it, but I always start mowers on the lowest possible throttle and then gradually work them up once it's been started. It could be that you are just running too rich or lean on gas. But the carburator should take care of that. Maybe try giving it some more air through the carburator and see if that helps. My old mower used to burn so much gas it was insane. I'd get big clouds of it when i first started it. But it always started on the first pull so I didn't mess with it.

EDIT: another thing i thought of is that some mowers use a gas/oil mixture. And i've seen some weird concentrations. you might want to check on that to see if this one requires anything special like that.

lawn mower mulcher door problem?

peace...an

the torsion spring came loose from the plastic door. how do i get it back on?

Answer
you have to examine the particular hinge you have and try to figure it out. What you often see in that situation is the plastic breaks and can't hold the spring in place any longer. What I do when that happens is get some self tapping screws, or predrill a hole in each corner of the door and the mower deck and install some short regular sheet metal screws screws to hold it in place. Be sure they are not so long that they come anywhere near the blade as it rotates.

Battery Charging For Lawn Mower?

Q. I have a Gardena reel lawn mower, electric with battery. I know it needs to be fully charged before re-use, like 24 hours, but should it be fully DIScharged before I re-charge?

By the way, the power adapter (a transformer type) was giving only 9 volts for a 12 v battery, so it would never hold a charge - had to buy a new one.

Answer
Always a good idea to fully discharge because of battery "memory".Your battery will loose its maximum charge if repeatedly recharged before being drained. The battery tends to remember the smaller charge. It can also cause the battery to loose its peak voltage more quickly.

How does the 12 volt battery in a riding lawn mower?

Q. charge during operation of the mower?

Answer
Your mower has a magneto that operates the electrical system and charges the battery. It is a very simple electrical system, compared to that on a car. For example, the magneto must be in operation for the lights to work. That way they don't drain the battery.

The main drain on your battery will be starting the engine. This electrical system has no voltage regulator, but there is almost no danger it will overcharge the battery. Under normal conditions, if you take care of it, a battery should last about two to three years, sometimes more. It is a good idea to use the headlights when you are mowing, especially if you are near a street or highway.

Under normal conditions there is very little drain on the battery. When storing the mower for the winter it is a good idea to disconnect the battery.

Should I retire my Trimmer lawn mower?

Ted A

I have an old California Trimmer Mower that still cuts well. It doesn't look old to me, but my son thinks it looks really uncool compared to the flashy red mowers they have at Walmart and Home Depot. Should I just give in and getting one of those newer rear discharge mowers? Do they cut better than my old Trimmer?

Answer
If your blade is sharp, your old mower will cut just as good as one of the newer models. Have you considered getting some flashy red spray paint and sprucing up the old mower? It could work! If you do decide to get a new mower, you might check out the link below for some good info on mowers.

Answer
I think that the craftsman is a better quality lawn mower, however i have an 82 year old neighbor who has the other one that has large rear wheels, and i have tried it and it is fairly easy to use.
1) i would recommend craftsman if:
* you want for professional-looking job
*long lifespan of mower (higher quality mower)
*small Business or residential

2) I would recommend Briggs and Stratton if:
*you want to get id done quick and easy, and don't mind if your lawn does not look like it was done professional. (im pretty sure this one is lighter than the other one)

I hope this helps! :)

Lawn Mower, no primer?

Bert

A friend of mine is out of town, and I elected to mow his lawn. But upon looking at it, and checking the manual, I can't find the primer. I searched all over, even lifting some of the hood.
The lawn mower is built so that you just press down the handle and pull the cord and it starts. But the oil and gas doesn't automatically get into the engine. There 'has' to be a way to pump it in. Any ideas?
Problem is, this one doesn't 'have' a black easily accessable buttton. I just tried it, tugging it about 20 times more and it came on. Then when I was trying to put the choke somewhere, I let go of the handle and it turned off.
After that, I couldn't get it working again.
21st century, and there's no lawn mower that can be as easily turned on as pressing the power button of a remote.

Answer
Some mowers have a little rubber type button that you press a few times to prime ( send fuel) into the engine. Its usually black, accessable, and visible. The oil automatically lubes the engine as it goes. Even if you don't prime the engine, it may still start with a few extra pulls.

Grinding parts in my lawn mower?

need_4_spe

I have a John Deere LT155 Riding mower. Today when I started i up i took it out of the garage and it started to make a grinding sound. When I pushed the parking brake, it stopped. Does any body know whats wrong?

Answer
Sounds like your parking cable/mechanism is rubbing on the pulleys under it. Then when you put the brake on, it tightens and lifts out of the way. Check the parking brake cable and see where its hitting.

lawn tractor?

I am looking to purchase a lawn tractor. I have aprox 1.5 acres of grass, flat to hills , and some uneven areas. what lawn tractor would you recomend? john deere, cub cadet, troy built, ect...... what hp, deck size
looking in price range of $1500-2000
I am looking for something that mulches well. my yard is too big to bag, rake or collect

Answer
I'd recommend about a 17-18 horse lawn tractor or so (17 horsepower absolute minimum) with a 48"-60" deck. Zero turn radius tractors will go faster but they can take a little getting used to.

You can't go wrong with a John Deere. They do cost a little more, but they last so much longer that they are worth every penny. Our family had a John Deere 116 for years and it lasted from about 1980 to probably about 2003. In that same time, our neighbor went through about 4-5 cheap lawnmowers and we had a much larger yard to mow including a pond where we hit sticks and stumps, etc. John Deere just builds theirs well, you can tell by the thickness of the sheet metal on the mower deck.

If you get the tractor type, the only kind I'd recommend is a John Deere. Well, I'd probably also recommend Toro. They are pretty good, but still not as good as John Deere. Gravely also has pretty descent ones, but they are not as common. I recommend getting one with hydro-stat. It comes in SO handy. Also, for the hills I recommend getting the lug tires. They work so much better than the turf tires for going up hills.

For a zero turn radius there are several good brands out there. Dixie Chopper is well known. Of course there is John Deere. Then there is Grasshopper and Bushhog. All of those brands are good brands.

What Lawn Tractor Should I Get?

thebiggin4

We recently moved to a house more in the country with 12 acres and we are looking to buy a riding mower/lawn tractor. The property is 12 acres total, with a 2 acre pond, and the house and landscaped area by the pool probably covers a bit over half an acre, so we are looking at around 9.5 acres to mow. The property is completely flat with a slight grade going down towards the pond, but nothing big. My family all live in a very small (population 600) town in rural Illinois and they tell me to get the biggest John Deere I can afford.

Price aside, what would be the most efficient tractor for this job? We dont want a zero turn mower because we like the attachments (snow plow, gardening cart, etc.) that can put on a riding mower.

Answer
Yeah, lawn tractor as they are tougher and have bigger engines, especially since you'll need the PTO for a rototiller or other mechanical attachments....if you are leaning towards them as well. Also buy what can be serviced in your area easily. You don't want to be hauling it far away for service and repair.

If you are mechanical and can do the work yourself, you can look to Husqvarna (I never get that spelling correct) or some of the professional turf grass types........but I'd angle back to Deere because of the attachements. As to model, talk with the dealer to determine what you'll need for the work load you expect to be doing.

i need help saving up for an apartment.what can i do?

Jitana

i am 17 n a junior in high school.im tired of putting up with the drama in my family.i want to get an apartment on my own down by Redondo Beach, ca which is about 1,000 to 3,000.i graduate high school in June 2012 and hoping i get a job at front desk at medical place.i got my certification to do so.but i cant get a job these days cause no one is hiring.so what can i do for now to save money?i was also thinking about the child support my dad owes me..he stopped paying it over more than a year ago.i was thinking that he is going to have to pay it some day so if i save that up im hoping i can have enough for an apartment and college.but im also afraid that i wont make it on my own.i dont really know what i need to pay for having an apartment or what i need to watch out for.what suggestions can you give me?please help!!!
i will be 18 years of age on November 14, 2011..btw

Answer
It's tough for young people these days. I'm sorry your home situation is unpleasant.

First of all, regarding your father's delinquent child support? If your Dad owes a year's worth of child support, your mother needs to pursue the matter IMMEDIATELY to make sure he pays. The courts can put a lien on your father's salary through his place of employment and take it directly out of his paycheck.

HOWEVER, please understand that child support money won't go directly to you. It goes to your mother. It's purpose is to help her raise you (ie., buy you food and clothes, etc.). So don't count on getting any money from child support for yourself personally, unless your mother has agreed to give you some of it.

Babysitting is a good way to make money for a teenage girl. When school is over, you might be able to get a job as a nanny. You can also apply to some Temp Agencies and try to get temporary jobs if there aren't any permanent jobs available. If you have access to a mower, you can mow lawns during the summer.

I'm sorry to say this, but until you actually get a steady job and have some money accumulated, you won't be able to rent an apartment. You'll need a full month's rent to put down just for a deposit, plus the first month's rent. That's a minimum of $2,000 upfront and you're going to have other expenses (electricity, heating [unless they are included in the rent], transportation costs, furniture, etc.) and ideally you should have at least $1,000 set aside in an emergency fund.

The best thing to do--and I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it does work--is to make a conscious decision to not let the drama in your family bother you, and to not let yourself get caught up in it yourself. Break their pattern of behavior by removing yourself from it. If they argue, simply close your mouth and don't argue back. If they shout, simply close your mouth and don't shout back. Break the pattern by changing your own behavior.

If it's other people arguing with each other that bothers you, just say to yourself, "It's between them, I have nothing to do with it; and then just don't get involved. [The exception to this, though, is if you have a very young sibling who's being verbally abused and needs protection; if that's the case, talk to one of your school counsellors and get advice on what you should do].

Buy yourself a good pair of earplugs and USE THEM. I'm not kidding!

Good luck to you! Please feel free to email me personally through Yahoo! if you need to talk to someone.

I need to raise 1200 dollars in a little over a month?

Himeki Tri

So basically as a first generation American, my parents don't have much. I want to apply for the Texas-Oklahoma Convention Liasion of Key Club and to do so it requires I go to International Convention 2011-2012. Well, it's in Orlando, Florida and an approximate estimation by the immediate past governor rang up to $1200+ dollars. I have a job but it doesn't pay much (minimum wage for 3ish hours a week). Another thing is my mom is very anti-key club. She got mad at me for going to District Convention and not getting an award. Actually she wasn't mad at me, she said I should never go back because I didn't gain anything. If I don't gain something very valuable in any situation, she throws a fit. But that is a whole different story. I need a real game plan here and I realize I'm overshooting but anything helps so please, How can I raise 1200 dollars in about a month?

Answer
Get a truck. Troll your neighborhood for cast-off and unwanted, but sellable items. Bring the items home. Clean them up. Take pictures of them. Place ads on craigslist.org in your area. Include the pictures, a good description, and your phone number.

If the items you have found are in demand, your phone will begin ringing almost as soon as you place the craigslist ads.

I have done this for the past two years and I have been making $200 per week. The best sellers:
Living room furniture, lamps, desks, lawn equipment (working or not. I sold a broken Honda mower for $30), snow boards ($30), power equipment (I found an Emglo air compressor and sold it for $90), luggage (average price $7 to $15 for 4-wheelers), etc.

Last Week, I sold a recliner sofa ($60), a 61-inch Flat Screen TV ($40), and a golf putting practice machine ($10). And somebody wants to buy the Tama Drumset I found. They are willing to pay $150.

Today, I sold a NEC 17 inch computer flat screen monitor ($20), an easy chair with ottoman ($30), a Yamaha electronic keyboard ($40), and a pair of wood nightstands ($40).

My Lawn Mower has no bag!!!?

Smiley

It has no bag. my cuz broke it and my father threw it out
what can I put on it so that I wont get hit when it accidentally grabs wood or other things
and I would also hate to leave the old grass on my yard again? any ideas?
I need it by today so no time to go get a new one.

Answer
Doesn't this thing have a door that closes over the hole? A garbage bag will not work because it has no place for the air to go. Try a large potato bag, or maybe even an onion bag if you have one on hand. Not sure how you will fit it on ? Better off to just rake it up when your finished.

lawn mowers?

Q. is there a push lawn mower that can be started like a riding lawn tractor?
and if so what brand?

Answer
There are many brands of walk behind lawnmowers that have elec starters. They are rather expesive. I think sears even has them in their catalog or online.
Try just stopping in your local lawnmower shop - just to start your search and put your hands on one. The big home improvement depots will not stock them or be able to answer your questions.

Which walk-behind lawn mower has the largest blade / cutting area?

Neerdowell

I need a new lawn mower, as both my riding mower and push mower are requiring too many trips to the repair shop to stay running. I can't afford a new riding mower, but I hate the small cutting area that a walk-behind mower usually offers. Is there a walk-behind lawn mower out there that has an extra large blade that provides a much larger cutting area?
Okay, I guess I should've said consumer grade walk-behind mower. If I could afford a commercial grade walk-behind mower, I would be able to afford a consumer grade riding mower, which I can't.

Answer
There are several brands of lawn mowers that have a 22" cutting area. That is about as large as you will find on a standard push lawn mower. From there, they go down to 21, 20, and even 17". You can find one of the 22" mowers at Home Depot or Lowe's or some other store like that. To get any larger than that would require that you buy an industrial mower or professional grade mower, which as you said you can't afford.
