How does a $1000 lawn mower create 50 jobs?

Steve W

There are numerous conflicting figures with the number of jobs created or saved and where this stimulus money is going. What's going on?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/us/05stimulus.html?_r=2

Answer
Well, George buys the mower, then finds Manuel standing in front of the 7-11 & asks him if he'll cut lawns for $2.50 an hour. Manuel says "Si". George then gets more grass cutting jobs that are too much even for the "will do jobs Americans won't do for non-living wages" illegal immigrant Manuel, so George tells Manuel to get some of his relatives to help out. Manuel goes home to his one room apartment & get 49 relatives & other illegal immigrants to help out cutting lawn.

Viola! 50 new jobs!

Uh...no taxes collected, tho', 'cause George is paying Manuel & his buds under the table. After taking a little off the top for himself....insurance, you know....to keep ICE from finding out.

what's wrong with my lawn mower now?

derek

i replaced the battery. it has gas, it has oil, i cleaned the filter, and it's a craftsman lt 1000 '04 model. it will turn over sometimes and once in a while will crank but won't run for more than a few seconds. i seem to be thinking it's something to do with oil maybe. it's leaking some but not fast. what could be wrong?

Answer
lawn mower are pain in the @ss try to bring it in the lawnmower shop. Believe me its not worth it on trying to fixed it. without knowing it you already spend a lot of time just to fixed that damn thing. Anyway try to clean your carburetor with carb cleaner be careful with the pin under the float then check your acceleration cable if it's fulling all the way. But try to replace the plugs first. There's probably something wrong with your magnetto too. Too many things to look for.

Lawn mower for a hill?

Q. There's a lake behind my parent's house and the back portion of the lawn slopes down into it. My father has trouble reaching the farthest part of the grass by the water. What kind of lawn mower should he use?

Answer
Id suggest a weedwacker - you dont want to be driving a tractor or using a push mower by the water ( too muddy) .

How does a manual lawn mower work on hills?

Craig_Ande

I'm thinking about buying a manual or reel mower for this summer. My yard's not that big for starters and I like the idea of a quiet mower. I do have a small hill in the backyard though and I'm wondering how this will work on that hill? WIll it give a smooth, even cut?

Answer
As long as you can walk up and down the hill and control the lawnmower then it will work just beautifully on the hill. Just imagine what a wonderful contribution you're making to the environment by not using electricity or fossil fuels to power a piece of equipment.

Thank You

Electric lawn mower help?

brennanpol

I just purchased a Black & Decker cmm1200 cordless mower, which uses a lead acid battery.
I was told that to prolong the life of the battery, I should completely use up the battery, and then only charge it again the night before I use it.
Can someone confirm this, and provide more details?
- thank you

Answer
The reason they tell you to charge it the night before is to keep you from OVER charging, which can severely cut short the life of the battery.

My husband bought an electric lawn mower because we live near the beach and we were thinking 'green'. He loves it, but probably wouldn't if we had a larger lawn because it probably wouldn't mow a yard much larger than ours.

And yes, on the 'use up' the battery, which is also a bit of a pain at times, because if you have half a charge, it's better to use it up, than to recharge it to a full charge. He's had to pause a lawn mow because the charge goes out in the middle.

All in all, tho, it's a clean mow, it works perfectly, and it's much quieter than gas, which is great here at the beach because you don't hear a bunch of people mowing lawns on the weekend;)

We have the Earthwise Mowers - I think it's 20". We got it online at greengardentools

this might have additional information, but you'll probably be just fine by not overcharging and depleting the charge.

Hope that helps.

How do you use your electric lawn mower?

carolina n

We received a electric lawn mower as a gift (it's a second hand mower) my husband has been using it for several months. The only way he can use it without cutting the electrical cord is pushing and pulling the mower with one hand while pulling, pushing, picking the cord with the other. I think it takes double the time cutting the lawn with this machine....is there a tip that you can give us? maybe something we don't know, like a retractable electrical cord...I don't know....something that you can use to be able to push the machine with both hands

Answer
BTW "The Man": 'Electric' would mean..... electricity. 'Battery-powered' would mean.... battery. DUH.

I have an electric; takes a few uses to get the hang of it. Most have a handle that 'flips' from one side to the other, so that the cord stays on the same side of the mower, and you don't have to walk backward, or drag the mower - both of which can be dangerous. Check your mower to see if it has a hinge at the bottom, where the handle attaches to the mower. If so, then you should also have a lever that will unlock the handle and allow you to flip it over to the other side.

Once you figure that out: start mowing closest to where you've plugged in, and walk away from it; make sure that where the cord plugs into the handle stays closest to the 'plug in' point at your house. Then, as you mow further away, the cord stays on the grass that's already been mowed.

Which lawn mower should i take?

Aj

My dad and i usually mow 6 lawns on saturdays today we did 5 that are next to eachother the other one is far away so we did 5 we have a 33 in walk behind mower that is heavy and a 21 in walk behind like for home use i like the 21 in better because it stripes but its not as powerful and the 33 in is better its faster and powerful i just cant unload that good because it always slips and i dont want to mess it up and my dads not gonna be there im doing it by myself which one should i take the lawn is 1/4 of an acre plus backyard which is small

Answer
benefit vs risk : the big mower will get you done a little faster, but the risk is damaging you or the machine when you unload it. The little mower will stripe and you can use it easier, unload it faster, and feel more comfortable.

For a 1/4 acre lot, I'd take the little one, no worries!

Push (reel) mower and grass clippings?

White Pola

I use self-propelled mower. It cuts the grass into tiny pieces that fall back to the yard and decompose quickly, letting the nutruition back to the yard and redcue the needs for fertilizer.

Push (reel) mower is environmental friendly becasue it doesn't produce air and noise pollution. However, it doesn't cut the grass to pieces like the gas lawn-mower. Will it cause thatch problem if the grass left in the lawn?
This question really originated from a dicussion in the environment forum where people are asking how "green" a reel mower is. I am not planning to replace mine.

Answer
Thatch isn't cause by clippings, it is formed by a layer of dead roots and stems in an unhealthy lawn. The real mower should do just fine, as long as you don't wait until the grass is 6 inches high to mow it. I used one on my old lawn for several years and never had issues. I'd still use one, but I'm not about to try to mow an acre of grass with a push mower.

is Auto Motor Oil okay for Lawn Mowers?

Bobby Joe

i saw some oil at sears that said '' specially formulated for 4 cycle air cooled engines '' but is any 10w 30 car motor oil all right for a self propelled mower?

Answer
Yeah, specially formulated and specially high priced. My mower has been running on the same oil as I use in my car since I bought it in 1992. Worst thing for your mower is that @#$%&^ ethanol gas we're stuck with now. The alcohol content destroys the seals in the carbs on small engines. And if they go to 15% like they're talking about it will only get worse.

Why did motor oil mix with gas in lawn mower?

BaljitS

I have a craftsman walking mower that is the 550 series powered by Briggs and Stratton. For some odd reason the mower started blowing out white smoke from the exhaust with some black stuff spewing out. I thought it was motor oil and thought the mower was exhausted from the cutting off high grass. I decided to wait until morning and make sure it was cool before I finished. Now the mower won't even start and when I checked for gas the gas was greyish black with an oily feeling. Can someone please help?????

Answer
The oil and the gas should not be mixing. If this is happening this means you have a stuck float and/or needle and seat. You will need to drain the oil from the engine and drain the fuel. Clean the carburetor using an overhaul kit and carburetor/choke cleaner. Next fill with fresh fuel and oil. Take a look at the link below to help you clean the carburetor.

Should I buy a residential lawn mower or a commercial one?

Joe

I have 7 lawns and my lawn mower just broke and i was wondering should i buy a riding mower or a push mower
my lawns usually took me 2 hours to do with a 21 inch cut deck

Answer
A commercial lawn mower would be a better idea as they are very efficient and good at cutting grass. The companies that provide you with them offer a limited service option as well. This way if something goes wrong you can always rely on them to offer professional service. Here are a few cheap lawn mowers which you could probably use => http://home-and-garden.become.com/cheap-lawn-mowers-riding

Are lawn mowers.........................?

friends with other lawn mowers?????

Answer
Look you need to better clarify your so called question.
Now are you talking about Gardners that Mow and Blow Lawns?
If your asking about Professional Gardners that Mow other folks Yards?
If not then are you referring about Professional Landscape Contractors?
If not are you asking about is there Professional Groups that get together. Then some refer to networking ideas or Assoicaition for better
Standards of the Green Profession?
Now in California we have the C.L.C.A. which stands for
CA Landscape Contractors Associations: This group strives to promote better trained and professional Landscape Contractors State
wide. That are Landscape Contractors that are accountable for work performed. This is from Design to as Build projects. Yes and Yard maintenance projects. We do network, have discount Insurance rates for the Independent Business owners to large Business Company.
Then also do from Residentials to Large Commercial projects.
So now good luck networking with other lawn mowers:

How exactly do lawn mower engines work?

Q. I am trying to build a beefed up go kart and I have a lawn mower engine that I can use but lawn mower engines are vertical driven and a go kart is usually driven with a horizontal mount. How do I make the conversion, should I just use a gear box? Also how do the governors work, my budy build one with an old 5hp briggs and stratton and he tore the governor off why did he do this? any ideas?...thanx guys.

Answer
You can buy a gear box to run a vertical shaft engine, but it is probably cheaper to buy a horizontal shaft engine than to try to convert it.

The governor is in place on a lawn mower for 2 reasons -

(1) when you're using the lawn mower, its not practical to keep a hand on the throttle, but the mower needs to operate at different throttle openings to work efficiently. The governor senses load on the engine and reduces or increases throttle opening as needed.
(2) if you were to just run it wide open, you would overheat the engine and reduce the life of it. Also, the maximum speed has to be governed because the blade is only safe to a certain RPM.

On a go cart, you can regulate the throttle manually (in fact, you want to). The governor is not required, and because you are changing the load, you don't really have to worry about over revving the motor to the point that things break.

ps - if the engine came off a riding mower, you might already have a gearbox. If its from a push mower - I would check the price of horizontal shaft units first, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Troy Built Lawn Mower?

PeaceInThe

My husband has a 2000 Troy Built Lawn Mower and is looking for a bagger for it. He has went to the website, but no luck. He is hoping to get a bagger number. Anyway, the Model # is 13AQ609G063, if anyone knows where to find one or can specifically help. Thanks!

Answer
Most baggers are universal anyway- any home improvement store would carry them. Be prepared to spend around $300-500 for one tho.
It shouldnt be difficult to hook up either, a frame bolts to the back of the tractor chassis, the bagger hood and bags hang from this , while the shute hooks to the deck with a small bungee cord, somtimes this lil tab attached to the deck might need to be welded or screwed on- depends on the kit.

what is the best self propelled lawn mower under $500?

Q.

Answer
Snapper makes a great self propelled mower. Check out the drive mechanism: solid, with bearings and thick steel. Stay away from the cheaper mowers with the little transmission boxes that power both wheels simultaneously: They last about 2 years. My first snapper went 12 years, mowing an acre lot. The engine gave out. I saved the drive mechanism from the old one as a backup.

The sales of lawn mowers t years after a particular model is introduced is given by the function y = 5,500 ln(?

Nate

The sales of lawn mowers t years after a particular model is introduced is given by the function y = 5,500 ln(9t + 4), where y is the number of lawn mowers sold. How many lawn mowers will be sold 5 years after a model is introduced? Round the answer to the nearest whole number.

please show all work

Answer
y = 5,500 ln(9t + 4)

How many lawn mowers will be sold 5 years after a model is introduced ?

This means how many lawnmowers will be sold when t = 5

so

y = 5,500 ln(9t + 4) at t = 5 is

y = 5,500 ln(9(5) + 4)

= 5,500 ln(49)

= about 21,405 lawnmowers

result: 21,405 lawnmowers were sold at 5 years after the model was introduced.

!!!!Starting lawn business!!!!?

Gilbert

hey im starting my own lawn maintenance business any ideas what kind of mowers i should get and the most basic stuff i will need? please give me details with brands also and also what kind of mower. And maybe what are good prices to charge in florida for lawn work. What do you pay?

Answer
Gilbert,

I feel your first concern is to be able to sell yourself to your audience. I would work on referrals from people you have serviced in the past and provide them to new clients. The key to buying equipment is what will it take to maintain them in peak condition. Investigate the service contracts of the machines.
Sometimes buying a "name brand" is not always the best buy.

Look to see what other lawn care providers in your area use for their lawn care business. Ask them what they prefer.

Good Luck !

riding lawn mower?

How many HP do you guys suggest for a riding mower to cut a 1/2 acre of lawn, the yard has alot of rolling hills with a few fairly steep climbs.I was thinking Husqvarna, what do you think?

Answer
Husqvarna makes the Craftsman mowers. MTD makes Cub, White, Troy-Built, Yard man, Yard Machines, Bolens, and the new Toro tractors. The John Deeres in Lowes and Home Depot are made to last 250 hours and be tossed. That is all the "discount" brands.

If you are looking for a mower go to a dealer, even if its John Deere. The dealer can service the machine after the sale. Most will even deliver for free. They know the machines and the feature that will work for your conditions and situation in your yard. You are going to talk to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about, and not someone who will be in paint tomorrow.

I would recommend a Snapper of a Simplicity. Simplicity has a mower called the Regent that is 18 HP with a 38" deck, and sells for $1999. You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

is it really possible to buy a home with an FHA loan and 3.5% down?

Mr D

I'm wanting to buy a house come february 2012. And I've been doing a lot of research. I have no debt and I have a 730 credit score and a long history of employment. For the home I want, I can come up with about 4% down. Everywhere tells me that all you need is 3.5% down for an FHA loan... as long as you pay PMI... etc etc. What I'm wondering is, is this true or are there other costs that I'll have to consider before buying a home? Can I roll closing costs into the cost of the loan? How much does the real estate agent cost in all this, and do they get paid in the loan amount? How much do I REALLY need to put down on a house? Thanks

Answer
In my area we have lots of people buying homes with scores lower than yours on FHA loans with 3.5% down. Several of them have negotiated the seller to help pay some or all of the buyers closing costs (that effectively rolls the costs into your loan because of course a seller negotiates harder when they have those additional costs to pay).

A good local loan officer can line this all out for you. In their estimate they give you they have to estimate how much your home owners insurance will costs because they have no idea what type of policy you will go with, they have to estimate the costs of property taxes until you pick out a house, they do not require you to get a home inspection (this is totally different from a home appraisal that they do require) so they don't include that in your estimate- an inspection costs $325 to $425 around here. They also don't include any guess as to how much it will cost you to move your furniture or buy a lawn mower or whatever- but they do a great job at estimating very closely the cost of closing on the home.

The interest rates are at a ridiculously low point- I would think pretty seriously about buying now so that you can get these low prices and low interest rates!

Heavy Duty Headphones under $500?

Fay Showal

I've had my Soundlogic Dynabass headphones for over a year and they have great sound, they're the best headphones i've ever owned, but now they're starting to cut out more and more. i think it's time for a new pair, but i don't know what to get. I listen to mostly metal but i also listen to alot of electronic music as well (like dubstep) and then i dabble in some other genres too. the heaviest that i use my headphones is when im doing chores, especially mowing the lawn with a push mower. at first it was mainly when i would stick my ipod into my pocket and then start walking around and start mowing. but now it cuts out anytime. i think there's a loose connection either where the wire meets the headphone, or where the jack goes into the ipod. i know its not my ipod because recently i got some heavy-duty earbuds that aren't cutting out at all. so could somebody tell me where to get good, heavy-duty headphones that would last for a long time for under $500? or should i get another pair of Dynabass headphones? if u have any questions just let me know.
(p.s.) This Is not Fay Showalter asking this question. This is her son, Evan. So don't call me Fay. thnx
so i was gonna go with the v-moda, but i saw that that answer had 2 down votes. y is that? are those headphones not as good as they appear?

What is the best riding mower?

Adam

My dad and I have been mowing some lawns commercially on the side for the past 7 or 8 years. I have one job that is about 6" to 8" tall when we mow it and it is not like city grass, it's like grass that grows in the country. It is about 5 or 6 acres of that with little trees that try to grow in the grass. That yard takes about 5 or 6 hours of mowing each time. The rest of my yards are in town and a lot smaller. For the jobs I have right now I have been using a 2007 Cub Cadet Tractor mower, 24 horsepower, 50" cut that I bought this year and I works we'll but I bought it used and it already has some problems. I recently narrowed down my selection to a mower with 24+ hp and a 42" + cut zero turn mower under $3,500. It has to be durable and be able to do this job and not fall apart. I was looking at the 2013 Hustler Raptor (23 hp Kawasaki engine, 54" cut with a really strong deck and build for $2,899) and a Bad Boy MZ Magnum (27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and a 54" deck built also really strong for $3,499) I would much rather have more hp but I heard someone say that the Kawasaki motor runs so much better, but is it as powerful as the 27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor? Any suggestions on other ztr mowers and and answer to this question of which one would be better for my job(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

lawn mower problems?

carol k

i have riding lawn mower and starter kicks out and turns motor one turn then stops..i hooked starter to a charger and it will keep running fine so i dont think its the starter..what should i do next

Answer
If the battery test good and all of the connections are good 12 volt source, check the valves in both overhead valve or in block style valve. Meaning, an overhead valve has a head with valves in it that you can take off, push rods, and adjustable rocker arms ( the valves are not contained with in the block). You should also check them on a valve inblock style on some series and brands ( ex. if it is like a k series Kohler they have adjustable tappets in them that have a clearance that needs to be set). I forgot to mention this style of motor contain the valve in the engine block You can tell by the head just being flat and just having spark plug hole and no moving parts in it. If it is a valve in block style or overhead, and all other conditions are met valves set properly,no electrical problems. This could maybe have a compression release problem. There is a spring and a lift pin on the camshaft that releases compression from the piston chamber. It is on the cam shaft and through cintrifigal force allows weights through turning rpm to move a pin and in turn allow the valve to go to the open position allowing compression to leak down and not dead head while starting so it can be turned over easier. After the engine starts the weights fall back in and the release is no longer holding the valve open and the valve tran operates normally. Usually if you put a charger on it will start fine. With this problem the starter has unlimited amperage ( whatever the charger is usually 300-600 amps if it a big one) to turn that motor over. Most mower batterys will carry a lot less cold cranking amps. Just remember that testing your cables can be tricky checking them with an ohm meter is a bad reading because if just one strand of the cable is touching you will get a good reading. Check the draw of the starter with an inductive pickup to see how many amps it is pulling if it is pulling just a few it is cable and connections or starter prob. If it is pulling a lot could be starter problems or it could be a compression problem because the starter is having to work double time to try and turn that motor since the cylinder is building up full compression. I have had the compression release in many cases cause a customer to buy a new starter, cables, and switch when he didn't need em. He put it on and it didn't make a difference. I am into diagnosing not spendin money. Hope I helped you diagnose it and I explained it so you could understand p.s Just dont want you to spend money on something you dont' need!

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.

Is this riding lawn mower a good buy. I really need one please help.?

Ankit

The riding lawn mower is a craftsman 10 HP 30" deck
Electric Start

The model number is 502-270-110

And the mfg date is 98055

The asking price is $275

The mower appears to be a little rusty, it started up ok I guess, I have no knowledge whatsoever on lawn mowers though.

What I want to know is,

1) What year is this model, I can't tell from the mfg date...

2) Is this a good deal?

Thank you so so much for all your help guys, I really appreciate it!
Thanks for your honest reply. My lawn is big and it really bothers me when I have to cut it. What price do you think I should ask for it?
Also if everyone else could give me an honest reply too I would appreciate it. If its not worth it tell me, I work hard for my money and I don't want to waste it.

Answer
That's a fair price as long as the mower is in good shape but not anything to write home about. If the mower were in excellent shape I'd say yeah get it.
You should test it out. Make sure it doesn't smoke when it's running. Check the tires. Belts and pulleys...I wouldn't expect them to be new but not worn out either.
Make sure the steering is not loose. The deck doesn't rattle bad etc...all these things cost money to replace. You can spend more money repairing a worn out mower than if you just bought an inexpensive new one.
How old is the battery...that's another 30 bucks. See what I mean? Does the starter grind when you crank it? $30 for a new one
Belts can run up to 100 bucks for a set...same for tires. Blades can be expensive ($20-50).if one of these things is a bit worn okay but if it looks like several items are worn out...let it go.
Sears/craftsman mowers are good, especially if it's got a briggs & stratton motor. Tecumseh engines not so good.
I've had a couple of them. My first one lasted 20 years and it got USED a lot.
Don't mean to scare you off. Just giving you a heads up on what to look for.....good luck

PS, I don't know how old it is..probably made May 05, 1998 If so, thats getting kinda old.
Craftsman mowers went from silver to green about 5 or 6 years ago, if I recall correctly. If it's not green at least I'd say it's getting too old. Unless you've got some mechanical skills.

edit: almost any functioning riding mower is worth $200...but figure on basic maintenance only and just ride it until it falls apart. If you get 2 or even 3 seasons out of it consider yourself lucky. Blades and belts, batteries, oil changes, spark plugs, etc are usually easy to replace. If you can't do it yourself be cautious of repair shops...once you start down that road you'll wind up screwed in the end...I guarantee it.

Michael wants to make some extra money during spring break. He buys a lawn mower for $129.99 plus 7% sales tax?

xXAshleyXx

If he charges $20 to mow a lawn, how many lawns will he need to mow before the mower is paid off?

Answer
Is it a Gas mower that he has to buy the gas for? Does he have travel expenses?
and how much is his time worth? Will he have to declare taxes on this income?
Michael would be better off just getting a job without an upfront capital investment.

lawn mower oil change?

shaneinpoc

what oil weight should i use for my craftsman 6hp B&S, ive always topped it with 5/20 but it needs a change now
thanks

Answer
Your manual should recommend an oil for it. Most mowers take STRAIGHT SAE30 (NOT multi-viscocity such as SAE10W30 for example) oil. You can get the oil from your hardware store or yet much cheaper from your auto parts store (remember, no multi-viscocity). On most mowers, you have to turn it to its side to get the old oil out then once drained, put the new oil in. While at it, check the spark plug, clean it and gap it, or replace it if necessary. Sharpen the blade using a file and you are ready to go for another season !

type of oil in 4-stroke push lawn mower?

Daniel B

I own a 4-stroke push lawn mower and am wondering do I put in regular car motor oil or a special oil?

Answer
Good quality motor oil (ie: Castrol) changed every 25-50hrs.

Oil change frequency/viscosity is dependent on your location/usage/filtered or not.
Neither this or the air cleaner are places to try and 'save' money - heard of false economy?

Never had a problem running Castrol GTX 20w50 multi viscosity oil although
Royal Purple 15w40 full synthetic has been the norm for the last 10yrs round here.

Mowing Lawns for Teenagers?

Fox

I live in Connecticut, in a large suburban area. Each yard is about 1/4 acre.

How much should I charge per lawn? I was thinking of a baseline ($20) and increasing prices based on time, about $20 per hour. So a 1/2 hour job would cost $30, an hour job would cost $40, a 1 1/2 hour job would be $50, etc..

Do you think these rates are reasonable?

And also, I will be using an old fashioned push reel mower. How long might each job take?

And what other things can I do? I was thinking edging, trimming shrubbery, weeding, and cleaning the gutters (all jobs I do at home). And raking leaves in fall. I would charge a few extra dollars for each job ($5 for edging, $5 trimming, $2 weeding, etc.).

Thanks!! :D

Answer
Surely your not going to show up for a paying lawn job with "an old fashion reel mower" ! Let your customers think your somewhat professional with a self propelled gas mower ! If you seriously don't already own one, pick one up on craigslist in your area for under $100. Definitely get self propelled as it does a lot of the grunt work! I estimate my lawns that I cut based on $25/hour. Know how long it will take you before quoting price! This price includes string trimming and using a blower on driveway/sidewalks. In my area I base misc yard work that does not involve power equipment on $15/hour. Don't nickel and dime with $2 to weed, $5 for trimming...... you'll drive your potential customers crazy. Keep it simple!

Should I replace my lawn mower or get it fixed?

Matteo M

My 7-year-old Toro self-propelled lawn mower's cord is off so the self-propelled part doesn't work, the engine will no longer start (it wasn't fully engaged last time I used it... it was running slow and loud with a lot of smoke and used a lot of gasoline). The last time I got my mower serviced it was over $100. The newer model Toro is $350-$400.

At this point should I just buy a new one with all those problems?

Answer
7 Years for a mower is great.

It sounds like it is time for a new mower.

If you buy the new mower will you get 7 Years out of it? That is hard to tell.

Can I make a home made lawn striper for my riding lawn mower?

Aztec

I cant seem to make my lawn look professional. I think if i could make something that can attach to the mower that would bend the grass it would look better (like the mowers at the golf course). Can I make something like this. I really don't want to spend the money.

This is what i would like my yard to look like. http://www.scag.com/lawnstriping.html

Answer
It looks like it's just a roller you attach behind the mower. Try finding something like that.

Home Depot and John Deere riding mowers?

Jules

I recently purchased a home and it has a huge lawn that needs to be cut. I've never purchased a lawn mower before, but knew I wanted a John Deere and I decided to go to to the Home Depot to price a riding one (I live in a small town, so this is the only big-box, hardware store in the area). Apparently, they only had (1) in stock (an LA105), but it was on their floor, but showed very slightly worn tires, and dust (probably when they drove on the floor). Anyway, as far as I was concerned, it wasn't exactly new (wasn't crated), but since it was the only one there, I asked if they would give me a slight price break (not much, maybe 5 or 10% off), and I would buy right now. I was rudely told "this is not a floor model, it was new.. no mower comes assembled, and John Deere actually has a service person come out to build and check it before they put it out". Does anyone know if this is true? I may be ignorant when it comes to buying a mower, but I find it hard to believe homeowners have to assemble a riding mower on their own if they don't buy the one sitting out on the floor. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
never mind home depo-- go on line and find your john deere dealer, as they will be for real,,

need help with a green hho car?

Q. Hi i was planning to convert a lawn mower and a blower to run on hho gas. hho gas is hydrogen and oxygen gas in a two to one ratio, but the molecules are separate not combined into water. But before i get started i have a few questions that i couldn't find anywhere online. those questions are which is more important in the electrolysis process Amps or voltage and depending on the answer should i wire them in parallel or series and finally i plan on powering these using several different voltage ac dc adapters can i just strip the ends of the wire and wire them in parallel or series.
I was also wondering what material works best as the metal in the water for the electrolysis process. And what thickness of wire should i use to connect the power sources.
I was planning on storing the gas in tanks not make it on sight.

Answer

Popular Mechanics -- it doesn't work.

still not convinced?
http://aardvark.co.nz/hho_challenge.shtml $1,000,000 if it works.

Edit: If you really intent on spending your money, any good conductor would work.
<<I was planning on storing the gas in tanks not make it on sight.>>
Let's look at some science.
that means that you're going to have to run some kind of pump to pressurize the gas.
just leaving it at normal air pressure, assuming that you have a tank that's 3x3x3 ft (pretty big)
and knowing that 1 cu ft = 28 liters, and assuming that your engine is turning over at 1,000 rpm (rather slow for actually running) your tank would hold enough hydrogen to run a 2 liter engine:
28*27*5/(1000*2*2) = .945 = 57 seconds.
that's not going to get you very far.

now that you know you'll have to pressurize the hydrogen quite a bit, that's going to eat up most of the energy that you isolate. In fact, if you want to go any distance, it's going to eat up more energy than is stored in the hydrogen.

Maybe you want to think about this again.

It was 25 to one for all the 2 stroke victa lawn mowers made where i am.

i want to put my petrol lawn mower engine on a go kart?

Daniel

but the only thing is the choke and the accelerator are in the same how would i do this?

Answer
On go karts, typically a horizontal shaft motor ( comes out the side ) is preferable, can mount a small clutch to the motor, a chain to a rear sprocket on either a straight or differential type rear axle- keep in mind striaght axles turn like a Mack truck , not very good, while a differential will turn easily.
It is possible to use a standard verticle shaft motor ( comes out the bottom) - by using a single speed transaxle ( found on MTD tractors) and a go kart clutch or run some sort of right angle drive unit ( off a bush hog or field mower) to the axle.
To use the throttle setup, tractor racers use bicycle brake cables , a bicycle brake handle and a spring on the throttle plate to make it snap back closed - a pedal assy could be fabricated , just a longer cable would be needed. The choke might have to be made into a manual type - add a short piece of metal where you can reach it, then use a spring or latch to hold it open when its running.

How can I find the true market value of a used riding lawn mower?

quedawg_kc

Answer
Mowers are hard. Some people do not maintain them at all, and use them over conditions they weren't designed for. So each one has to speak for itself, condition wise. A three year old mower used only a couple of times, could bring as much as it cost when new, since newer prices keep climbing.

Self propelled lawn mowers?

Gnann

I am in the market for a walk-behind, self-propelled mower. The key is self-propelled. I need something that will pulled up the slopes in my yard. Every review I've seen does not address the power of the self-propelled function.

Would appreciate any recommendations.

Answer
go with a gear type transmition, even if it has a smaller engine it should be able to go up any hill that should be mowed! friction based systems will probably slip and as for as front or rear drive, go with rear drive for hills, the weightis mostly on the rear so they shouldnt slip as much ! if its not too big of a hill you might consider a weed whacker they cost about one third or less, (as cheap as 59.99 at walmart for gas powered) than a self propelled lawn mower, although it takes some practice to make it look like a mowed lawn, its much safer!

Snapper lawn mower?

argus

I would like to buy a blade cutter from ebay
I know the size is 21" but i have seen so many diferent blade types, i am not sure
what to look for.
can you help?
thank you.

Answer
Besides the length you have to know how it mounts. There are a few different styles. Sears uses a star, but most use a single hole in the center. Some also use a bolt in the center with two other bolts on either side. Check out your blade and find one that matches.

Craftsman RE2000 Riding Lawn Mower?

natsumi_pr

If anyone has an idea how to obtain the repair manual for this model I would sure appreciate the help.

I have checked every link I could find by using the search engines with no luck.

Thank you.
Thanks anyways, but my sister found it free online, lol. Take care!

Answer
You will need to get the model number off the mower. It will be 917. something. With that number go to sears parts direct and enter the number. If they have a manual available you will be able to order it from them. The number should be on a tag like under the seat.

Who makes Craftsman Lawn Mowers? MTD?

A.B.

Answer
The trimmers/blowers are made by MTD and poulan (poulan is a electrolux brand) But mtd is not.
The mowers are all AYP (owned by electrolux) which owns weedeater and husqvarna (which you may see being sold there)...
They mostly used tecumsehs and briggs... but it has switched to more briggs, some hondas and kohlers... You will see the kohlers on riding mowers along with briggs..., couple hondas with a few briggs and maybe a tecumseh or two....

Gardena lawn mower - is it any good?

The Divine

I need to buy a new lawnmower and I've been looking at the Gardena 12V cordless lawnmower. Has anyone used it, and what did you think if you have?

Just to note: I have a perfectly flat yard (like a pancake run over by a steamroller) roughly 45 x 100 feet plus an 8 x 45 boulevard to mow.

Answer
~ Here are reviews on the Gardena mower you are looking for. http://reviews.homedepot.ca/1998/941025/reviews.htm

According to consumer search http://www.consumersearch.com/www/lawn_and_garden/lawn-mower-reviews/
, the cordless Black & Decker CMM1200 actually does a better job than most corded electric mowers, mulching more effectively and cutting more evenly. It can mow up to about 1/3 acre on one battery charge. The CMM1200 has a folding handle, one-lever height adjustment and a polymer deck with lifetime warranty. The downside is that it costs more than a corded mower, and you'll need to buy a new battery in a couple of years.
