Why are PZEV cars illegal for sale in 42 states and are they illegal to drive as well?

@

It doesn't make any sense that 42 states would ban the sale of Partial Zero Emission Vehicles and would fine you up to 27,500 dollars. One interesting fact is that running your lawn mower to mow the lawn once would be equivalent to driving a PZEV car for 2000miles.
But anyway, is it legal to DRIVE a PZEV car in a state where SALE is illegal?

Answer
It is government run a little crazy.

The issue is the EPA doesn't have a PZEV category. Only California does plus the relatively few states that have adopted the Ca emmissions standard. Since the other states and the EPA do not reconize this cleaner category, vehicles certified to it can not be sold. Yes, it is a little crazy.

> is it legal to DRIVE a PZEV car in a state where SALE is illegal< Yes.

you'll have to give a LOT MORE information before we can try to answer that question. like is the battery dead? does it have clean gas?
when did it stop working? does the engine even turn over?
give us as much detail as poss able.
thanks and good luck to ya.
i feel for the 1st person that they have had nothing but trouble with their craftsman.
I on the other hand don't buy anything but craftsmen mowers.
for the money they are a good value. a lot depends on how well you treat them. changing oil, and filters and spark plugs,
leaving them out in the weather doesn't help any mower either. ( they never said they did that) my first riding craftsman lasted me about 10 years, the one i have now is about 5 years old. i also have a craftsman push mower.

how long does it take to get a contempt of court hearing?

Hatie M

On Feb. 26, my attorney told me he would request a contempt of court hearing. How long does it normally take? I'm going through a divorce and my husband is selling some of our marital property. (golf cart, lawn mowers, yard shed, etc.!)

Answer
A few weeks, maybe a month or so..

I'd push your attorney for the court date for the hearing. I'd also document everything being sold so you can get the fair market value and have that money added into the divorce settlement. Good luck to you!

Answer
Dog Shit
No lengthy, philosophical examination of dog shit would be complete without first pondering more existential questions like why dogs shit, and how. The answers may surprise and delight you. There are many interlocking components to the dog shit process. Food eaten by a dog (cupcakes, floppy disks, corn dogs, Vicodin) must first be processed into simpler, smaller elements suitable for delivery via the bloodstream to muscle and fatty tissue in the canine's body.

The digestive system of your dog begins at the lips and finishes under the tail, at a puckering donut-shaped curiosity scientists have nicknamed the anus. When you see a dog (or cat) who appears to be licking his or her own balls, it's more likely the animal is suffering from anal gland disease. Both the external anal sphincter and anal sac can become impacted or infected as the result of contaminants left behind by the anus, leading to feelings of pain and pressure best relieved by several hours of enthusiastic licking. The domesticated dog's alternative to licking is the act of scooting or scootching -- sliding one's anus across a coarse or thickly carpeted floor to soothe "itchy" feelings near the tail and hindquarters. Another reason for licking and scooting might be worms, a subject beyond the range of this modest tutorial. For those interested in further study, putting dog shit under a microscope can yield a full afternoon of excitement and wonder. Monocystis sporocysts are wiggly, protozoan parasites visible in the feces of dogs who have eaten infected earthworms.

Cells in a dog's body naturally generate waste by-products which must be eliminated through the kidneys, the lungs, the skin and digestive system. These organs are part of a larger excretory system. Of course, not everything a dog eats can be digested properly, or even used to store energy. The unwanted digestive material left behind on city sidewalks and community dog parks is called feces in America, and faeces to those residing in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Wales, or Scotland.

In Sydney, Australia, one can find over 100 tons of fresh dog shit dumped on the ground each day. Rich in phosphorous, Australian dog shit washes down hills after torrential rains, killing plant life.

There used to be an old joke: How do you tell an American in Paris? He's the one picking the shit up after his dog. Americans stopped picking up dog shit a long time ago, preferring instead to pantomime picking up dog shit when witnesses at the dog park are present but still too far away to see if there's really anything in your hand. It's been universally acknowledged that France has the worst metropolitan dog shit problem. Each day, Parisian sidewalks, alleys and gutters are choked to excess with ten tons of golden brown, oven-baked baguettes left behind by the city's 200,000 dogs. It's been estimated that in a single year, six hundred people break a limb after slipping on French dog shit -- and in recent years, failure-to-pick-up fines have grown to five hundred dollars per loaf.

And yes, in France there really is a Dog Shit Patrol: a subclass of the Parisian police force which manifests itself in a brigade of sixty-or-so green lawnmower motorcycles. These patrol vehicles search and scan for errant piles, circumnavigating city streets deemed most popular by tourists and politicians. Meanwhile, obese dogs are rapidly catching up to overweight French kids, with their sagging stomachs and bulging sides capable of depositing increasingly larger and more voluminous pockets of dog shit.

Every few months, dog shit gets tracked in by the news. Investigators discover "rooms filled with dog feces" in homes where neglected, emaciated children await rescue. Hundreds of animals are liberated from "cages lined with filthy dog droppings," in the homes of animal hoarders. Inevitably, whenever police storm into a person's home and encounter piles of garbage, the chances of discovering "piles of dog shit" are exponentially increased.

If you're an animal hoarder who resides in a rural apartment complex with a strict no-dogs-allowed policy, you can still get several hundred fake dogs. In its first week on the U.S. market, the Nintendo corporation sold a quarter-million units of Nintendogs: small, handheld devices which simulate the high-polygon dog ownership experience while tastefully eliminating the need for mylar poo bags.

If the idea of feeding, walking, and playing with fake dogs doesn't tickle your fancy, maybe you'd prefer a house full of fake dog shit, which comes in a variety of shapes. Machine-molded plastic dollops and rubberized poostuffs are key staples of novelty shops around the world. This "gag" gift makes it possible for apartment dwellers (or the financially disadvantaged) to circumvent traditional health code regulations and simulate the everyday presence of

Why do humans have to age and die?

Q. Why do people have to age and die? Why is the human lifespan set as it is and not 185 or 850 or 1000? Why does the body repair itself up to a certain point and then just shut down?
I didn't say "forever", I think it would be good to live considerably longer though, and what's wrong with being like China and putting restrictions on how many kids someone can have? You don't need a bunch of kids.

Answer
It is all very simple: The Cells replicate every seven years.
The mechanism by which the chromosomes are replicated cuts a piece off their ends every replication.

By the time that Human cells have replicated seven times, a protecting "inert" strip that is sacrificed with each replication, called a "telomere," is depleted, and thereafter, the ends of the chromosomes- which contain the genes that determine cell, tissue, and bodily structure is "bitten-off," so to speak, and everything you get thereafter is an inferior copy- which produces the phenomenon we call "aging."

I guarantee that scientists in the know are lying to their colleagues, when they say that they do not know how this mechanism works, and how to apply it to Humans.

My tribe has at least one working longevity technique: My grandfather died at 144 years. His father lived to be over 200 years. His father was reputedly over 300 years.
This is established as fact, because they were the kings of our tribes, and had access to resources not available to the common man. (E.g. In Polynesia, we hear that their kings have a special dish made out of the shoot of a palm tree; to eat it kills the whole tree. So no common man could eat such a meal.)

The longevity technique of the Yoruba tribe I belong to is much more disgusting than that. The king has some of his children killed, so that he can harvest their life force. It would appear that he needs to kill about one every decade.
One of us died the first decade. Then another in the second decade. Why this was so suspicious to me (who was the only idiot in our tribe, who did not know what was going on,) was that they were dead and buried before I even heard they were dead. (I live just 60 miles down the road.)

When my father (who had four new wives at the time, and numerous other children) threatened to kill me, his second eldest son, I escaped for my life, and began to research everything I could find out about sorcery. Being born in England, I knew nothing about our tribal belief system. My mother was very little help to me, being dead at his hands. His reward for murdering her- the first woman of our tribal group to have the guts to secure a divorce- was to be chosen king over his brother.

By a string of coincidences, I was guided to obtain the books of Carlos Castaneda. These opened my eyes to what had been going on around me since I came to this accursed country. A number of ignoramuses and liars have discredited this work in this forum. I want you to know that they are lying. many unknowingly, but some surely knowingly.

In THE SECOND RING OF POWER, Carlos Castaneda described how an apprentice, Pablito, was in danger of being killed by his own sorcerous mother, Dona Soledad, who stood to gain spiritual enormous power should she kill him- which would enable her to "lawnmower" the other members of the group, including Maria Elena and Carlos Castaneda. This was exactly the situation I grew up under.

There are adepts of various secretive societies (e.g. Freemasonry, Mormonism, Rosicrucianism,) who know all about this stuff, and want to keep it from the public, because if it came to light that they knew all about it all along, and did not warn their own people- even used it against them- it could go very hard against them. This is why, when someone asks the "wrong question," they have teams to come out and smother the truth.

The Nagual Julian, Don Juan's master, was a master of The Gait of Power, and with it he could change his body's age to be young or old at will. Don Juan, however, had changed his body eleven times, to remain youthful enough to complete his task. These options are available. Telekinesis is the key to molecularly rewriting the telomeres, repairing chromosome damage, and prolonging youthfulness as long as one wants.

Those who say that Mankind should have only a few decades to live are quite welcome to practice their beliefs all they want, in their graves. They should not be allowed to discourage and drag the rest of us down. Those of us who want Immortality should just go on and attain it.

Anyone interested in discussing this further and seriously, and contact me in my online group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/objectivechristianity/join

I trying to build a go kart from scratch and i know that i need so parts to build it with...I know the hardest part is find the ENGINE. This is a new hobby for me to start and i want t o accomplish this by the end of summer. I just started planning on my blueprint to build it.

If anyone knows where i can get a riding lawn mower or golf kart engine for cheap, low price or find one in New York Junk Yard/Salvage.

Another thing can I turn a "motor scooter" into a go kart engine. I know that motor scooters don't go that fast but if i can use it as a temporary engine it can help.

Answer
go to ebay and search for the user small-engine-deals and look at a side shaft engine. take care to make sure the shaft size of the motor you choose will work with a go kart clutch.

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Both of those prices are for "homeowner quality" mowers. Meant to be used once ,maybe twice a week to mow a small to medium sized yard.
If you do use them for your mowing business, figure on only getting one summer out of them.
Comercial mowers are way more expensive than the prices you have posted, but will last several years .
Just starting out, try to find some good used commercial mowers. Go talk to your local mower shops, look on craigslist, look for mowers at auctions.

Answer
Yes, you certainly should be able to buy the shroud that covers the whole engine part. You'll need to find the model of the mower and possibly a number from the motor itself, or maybe just the horsepower rating. Find a good reputable repair shop and they should be able to order it for you.

Is it safe to ride and use a hoodless lawn mower?

Q. Is this safe? Please give me all the steps in doing this if it is different than using a lawn mower with a hood. Thanks.

Answer
It is not as safe as having a hood (engine cover) but it is okay to use. There are not too many parts that can fly off and injure you.

The only bad thing is that you may get a lot of debris around your engine and carburator. This isn't too much of a problem but can cause your air filter to clog up..

Best brand and features for push lawn mower?

Alyse

What is the best brand and what are some of the features for a push lawn mower? We have a large yard mostly flat with a slight slant. Where did you buy it?
my husband says he wants the exercise so he can lose weight

Answer
It sounds like you probably want a push mower, though a self-propelled is much easier on the legs & back, especailly on hills with a large yard.

Some of the more recent improvements:

Squeeze lever control of self propelled wheel speed.
A one touch control of cutting deck. One lever instead of 4 moves deck.
Key (electric) Start
No choke starting.
Gas caps which automatically add fuel stabilizer to fuel to prevent clogging of carb.
Longer homeowner warranties. (2 years+)

With a large yard, I would get at least a 6.5 HP engine with a mulching blade. Large rear wheels are overrated, though they do make it easier to negotiate some turns.

The John Deere JS45 ($500) has the pivoting front wheels which makes the unit more manuverable around tight turns, a plus for a yard with alot of trees and beds. JD is also known for better cut quality and reliability. A smaller cut width (21" vs. 22") with a similar powered engine will yield a better quality cut. That would be my pick.
.
Consumer reports Apr. 08 issue has a great comparison of nearly every push/self-propelled lawn mower.

Q. I want to get a go kart. But real ones are expensive. So I was wondering if you could buy an electric go kart and replace the electric engine with a lawn mower engine.

Answer
You COULD,But the biggest problem your left with, is finding a gear box and clutch to go on it, so most likely you would have to do some pretty big modifications, so if your good with stuff like that, Go ahead, finding a gearbox and clutch to fit it is the worst, the rest is a piece of cake. The clutch is so your wheels don't keep spinning and gear box is to change the shaft from spinning vertical to horizontal, you will probably need a something to weld with if you don't already. Good luck if you attempt. JUST ADDING I SAW ON YOUR OTHER QUESTION JUST LIKE THIS, NOT ALL PRESSURE WASHERS HAVE HORIZONTAL SHAFTS, ONLY THE MORE EXPENSIVE ONES HAVE HORIZONTAL SHAFTS, HOPE THIS HELPS.

How to get rid of the grass smell of a lawn mower?

tech-80

I recently got a riding lawn mower and our garage has started to smell like decomposing grass. I currently use a mulching plug. I just cleaned off all the grass on the bottom of the mowing deck and i think it helped. I just don't want to have to hand clean the deck every month.
Any tricks to help get rid of the smell and/or the grass?

Answer
The trick to get rid of the decomposing grass smell, is to get rid of the decomposing grass, hehehe.

A good sprayer will do the trick...one on a 'wand', so you don't have to bend over to clean out under the deck. The more pressure you can put out with the sprayer, the better. Then let the deck 'air dry' before you put it away in the garage.

Grass tends to stick more, when it's wet. So, another trick is to mow only when it's dry. Since grass has water in it, you don't want to wait too long between mowing either, especially when you're using a mulching blade/plug. A good rule of thumb to follow when mowing, for a healthy lawn, is to cut no more than 1/3 of the length of the grass off. I'd recommend 1/4 when using the mulching system. This lets your 'mulched' grass come out finer, and is more easily 'absorbed' back into the lawn as fertilizer. If your grass is 4 inches high, then cut only 1 inch off, etc. This means you'll be mowing more often, but you'll get a much better look, and a healthier lawn. If you cut too much off at once, the lawn can actually go into 'shock', and the grass will turn a bit brown, or 'tan' color along the edges of the grass blades. (means your lawn won't look as green).

Have Fun

Rather than purchase a new unit I'm looking for a used one--I like the Kubota tractors--they appear to be of a comfortable size. These units are expensive and I am looking for a used unit of some type. Some say, stay away from those tractors that are hard to get parts for as-Mitsubishi, Ford etc yet these units are the most common in the used market under 2,500.00.
I can purchase a used (2yr. old),Husqvarna lawn tractor , 21hp w/48"cut for $900.00--is that appropriate-for 2.5 acres?

Answer
Yes the Husqvarna lawn tractor will be fine for just mowing 2.5 acres.
You may also consider your terrain and weather.
For example, if you have steep hills or creeks or rocks or sand or snow or ice.

You may find that some Husqvarna lawn tractors are built buy a common manufacturer.
I do not consider them a heavy duty daily use type of tractor.
What 21hp engine is it - the kawasaki or kohler?

If you can find a good Kubota and can afford it - do it,,,,,

What kind of snow removal product should I get?

blakesavag

I know we are heading into spring but I like to think ahead so it isn't too late and I get stuck in my driveway...again. I have about a 400 foot driveway. It is gravel and about 8-10 foot wide. We live in the country in the Chicagoland area. My wife recently started a business out of the house and we are looking for a snow removal product so that our customers feel comfortable coming to our house in the winter. I actually don't mind shoveling but when we both work I don't have the time to shovel my whole driveway like we would need too. I am looking to spend no more then 10,000$, and am looking for the best product available to me. Would a 4 wheeler with a plow work? Should I go for a snow blower? I just don't know what to do, but a small utility tractor seems impractical cause I wouldn't use it the rest of the year, a 4 wheeler would be fun year round, but would those plow thru well, on a gravel driveway? Thanks a ton for all of your help!
If I went 4 wheeler, I was looking at a Polaris 800 cc, 4 wheel drive way. The biggest snow blower I have seen on the market is a 15 hp. Is tat big enough? My mower is 21 hp and I can't imagine the motor on that being strong enough to throw snow, and no we don't get lake effect snow, but at times it is wet and heavy.

Answer
We have a 1500 ft gravel driveway, and use a kawasaki Prairie 650 and 4 foot plow to plow it. This is the first year we had to hand shovel the driveway wider, in MN, and it was a crappy, exhausting deal that took us 3 days (boy do we lose our physical fitness by the end of winter - in gardening season fitness, probably a 4 hour job). If your driveway is flush with the surroundings, and not elevated, it will be harder for you to push snow to the sides. we have a slight elevation. We are going to get a snowblower to use occasionally when there is a problem like this year, but I will tell you that when I first moved to this house, before I got married, I bought a heavy duty snowblower with tracks instead of wheels, and before the ground froze, like the first big snowfall time, it ate gravel and broke the shear pins constantly. We use our ATV for many things besides plowing so we are happy with this arrangement, and it's our own damned fault that we are hermits living so far off the road (We love it). we have a moose plow. I wonder if you get lake effect snow, which we are not near Superior at all - but again, if your driveway is elevated good, you can get that snow off to the sides. PLOW WIDE, like a freeway, earlier in the winter so if the snow really piles up, there is a place to shove the stuff. Get a WARN winch - the other brand we tried broke and was replaced twice, and everyone says WARN is best. You can put chains on your ATV and get 4 wheel drive. Don't get a little ATV - you need the weight. I sit on the ATV with my husband when there is a *lot* of snow, and I call myself Ballast on those days. You could put a sandbag on there instead, but the sandbag can't get off the ATV and pull it out of a snowbank if you slew sideways and get stuck.

PS I dunno why people think an ATV is iffy, but we do have a top of the line ATV (We didn't like the belt drive, and our second ATV is a direct drive Honda) and we are in central to northern MN and a lot of our snow is the fluffy stuff, not the heavy kind. And definitely no lake effect snow.

PPS It is difficult to check the oil on Polaris models, I've been told, and maybe that problem has been fixed. Of course I want you to buy one, since they are a MN company :-)

I think 15 HP is fine - I really loved that one I had with tracks instead of wheels, but I have a big hill to go up to get out from my house, and that's why I got the tracks. The main issue is sucking gravel in during early and late winter - in mid winter, normally you don't get dug into the road itself at all to suck any gravel. When I tried a snowblower attached to my lawn tractor, which was a 16 HP, I think, it kept getting stuck in the soft road bed and breaking shear pins.

Your driveway is MUCH MUCH shorter than mine, so I think a 4 wheeler will be totally awesome. Just remember to plow as wide as you can, because you never know how much snow you will get later, and you need a place to put all that snow. The driveway gets narrower thru the winter, if there is a lot of snow. In later winter if there is a LOT of snow, my husband will rev up and jam the snow directly sideways, with me as ballast, to push that snow back some more. This has only been a couple years in 10 that he had to do that. Keep spare clips, bolts etc on hand for your plow, because they fall out under heavy use, at times. Our Moose plow has been very good to us.

best lawn mower electric or gas image
Q. I'm moving into a new home that has a lawn. Its an average sized lawn that isn't too big at all. This is my first time having to maintain a lawn and I was wondering what type of lawn mower I should get? Which is better? I've been shopping around and I've been seeing gas or electric. I'm leaning more towards a push mower but just unsure about brands, features, and gas or electric.

Answer
For a push mower I would look at a Toro. Definitely a gas mower is preferable. You dont have to worry about finding an electrical outlet and you get more power. I would get a model that is self propelling unless you love a lot of hard work. If you want more information on picking one look in the May or June issue of Consumer Reports Magazine (free in a library or you can subscribe on line for a fee). They rate lawn mowers and their features. You can find a good mower for $300- $350

Do electric cars already exist and are they in use?

Q. Do we believe media specials that say that big Oil bought and shelved the concept?

We also have electric golf cart, electric lawn mowers, electric grass trimmers but people use gas for convenience.

Answer
It's a crazy conspiracy theory. Pure electric cars just don't work. They suck, no one shelved the design because of greedy big oil, electrics just don't have the balls to get the job done on American highways. Gas/electric hybrids work great though.

I'm asking this because my parents received something from the cops and not just me everyone in my neighborhood got on. They say this.Remove all items from yard to include old lawn mowers, trailers, go carts, misc, garbage, lawn equip, cans, containers, metal, plastic, wood, etc. I was shocked. We never had this for 7 years. But now I think they are taking it seriously for some reason. Please help!

Answer
Obviously it is a violation of local zoning code.

There are two reasons such codes suddenly get enforced.

One is complaints from neighbors, because such hillbilly crap tends to drive down property values. This enforcement wave could very well be a result of some guy down the street who's had his house on the market for three years now and can't find a buyer. It also could be some councilman who when driving through your neighborhood thinks it looks like a ghetto.

The second reason is that municipal budgets have been slashed. So they're looking for new revenue streams to pay for necessities. Such low hanging fruit as code violations rarely have as rapid repercussions on elected officials as cutting services or not balancing the budget.

You've always had such rules, they just didn't enforce them

I have a small lawn about 150 sq ft. Looking for a cheap manual lawn mower. Where can I get a manual lawn mower in Kolkata?

Answer
Sure, it's called Shudra. Get some of those and some scissors. Scissors are easy enough to find, as far as the Shudra, you'd know better than I where to get some. You could try getting some old style Paraiyar, but everyone has "put on airs" and you'd be hard pressed to find any that actually admitted to being Paraiyar. You're looking at maybe 1000-2000 rupee to get started and then about 300-500 each time you need it cut. Do you have access to sheep or goats? That's another option. Real cheap.

What the best transmission for a 20HP motorcycle build?

Kyle

I'm building a motorcycle useing a 20 horse diesel off a lawn mower I plan on making it chain driven and I know the transmission need to have a 90° turn in it

Answer
Local diesel conversions have been using Harley transmissions and Yanmar diesels, a couple used Haatz engines and again the Harley tranny. The Harley big twin tranny from 1950s on up is a separated unit with a clutch pack, chain or belt primary drive good for 175 to 100 hp. The other separably trannies maybe used are BMW and Moto Guzzi- these are the shaft drives and will have the clutch pack on the tractor engine used- adapters may be made- the old VW engine into /2, /5 transmission had adaptor kit circular at many BMW dealers- but alignment on that kind of set up will be tighter tolerance than the Harley with chain or belt primary coupling. Older english cycles had separate engine and transmissions until mid 1960s, then went unit construction except for Enfield, Matchless-- early Triumph and later Enfields are hard to find- but note the Indian made Enfields are using somediesell engines of 300 to 500cc - a 425 Landini gardentractorr/utility seems to fit into Enfield frame and connect to the tranny fairly well, is a common swap in India and some other countries that can get the Indian made old design cycle tranny and the Italian engine.

My husband wants to buy a new lawn mower and to fix it himself. What is the best kind for him to buy?

best lawn mower mulcher on Grasshopper Lawn Mower Prices | Best Lawm Mowers
best lawn mower mulcher image

Zelda Hunt

Before, we took our old mower to a shop that services them, but they barely fixed anything and often charged for changing oil when they didn't even do it.
How can he do it himself? Does he need a special book or manual? Special tools?
They all need fixing and at least preventative maintenance eventually - but only if you intend to actually use them. No, we don't have a lawn service.

Answer
Usually, owner's manuals for mowers are pretty good on covering maintenance issues. A shop manual is good if he needs to some serious work (taking apart the engine, etc), as an owner's manual won't cover that type of thing. Shop manuals you can usually get through a dealer, sometimes the company directly - depends on the manufacturer.

Honda makes a damn good mower

I still have my father's Honda mower... I think the model is 215 HRT or something. He bought it back in 1989, and I'm still using it. Its a self pulling mower (has wheels that will pull it along, you just need to walk behind it!) The thing is pretty much bullet proof. The opnly problem I have occasionally is the starter rope going slack on me. Just have to recoil the spring inside, and its good to go. It is pretty miserly on gas too, even almost 20 years later. I doubt I use more than 3 gallons of fuel in a year. I'm not sure if newer ones have them, but mine has a two-blade mulcher, which works awesome on grass clippings and leaves. On grass you barely see the leave-behinds (unless the grass is really tall) I don't even rake anymore - cuts leaves into fine bits... free fertilizer!

My Lawn Boy mower barely fills the bag before I need to stop and empty, any suggestions?

Christophe

I bought a Lawn Boy 20" push mower from Home Depot last year to replace my old one finally died. This mower is terrible. My main problem is that, unless the grass barely needs to be cut, the clipping exhaust port clogs up and the thing starts dropping most all clippings with an almost empty bag. The bag has never made it more than about half full. Is there anything I can do to improve this (new blade?) or is it just a crappy mower?

Answer
Make sure the blade was installed right side up for one if the mower is new. I would bet that this is the problem.

How old should my son be before I let him cut the lawn? Both riding and push mowers?

conshy3

My son is 6, but a big 6. He can reach the pedals on the riding mower and is tall enough to use the push mower. He is really excited to mow the lawn and I know he would do a good job, I am just worried he is too young. So long as he is not physically hurting himself, should I allow my son to cut the grass?

Answer
Hey, I started mowing the lawn around his age, and I'm a girl! My dad said "Listen, you are big enough to start helping." The first few times I did it he stayed outside and made sure I was doing it right. He showed me how to prime it (it was a push mower) how to start it, and how to add gas. After about a month of supervision, he let me do it on my own. I felt good for helping and it made me feel like a big kid. Just make sure he wears tennis shoes, NO SANDALS! And show him how to do it for the first few times.

How do I choose a lawn mower?

best lawn mower electric or gas image

no1gal

I have a slightly big backyard and the grass hasn't been cut since winter began, anywho, what type of lawn mower should I get? push/electric/gas? bag or no bag?... how hard is it to use a push lawm mower?
Thanks!

Answer
Get a gas powered rotary mower. You will have to decide if you want self propelled or not. Mulching mowers tend to clog frequently unless you mow frequently. If the grass is going to get any length between mowings you will not be happy with a mulching mower. Bags need to be emptied several times on a lawn of any size. Some mowers can go from rear bagging to mulching to side discharge just by changing some attachments. The new engines from Briggs and Stratton are as dependable as anything else, even Honda. One important thing to consider is how comfortable is the handle. Also check how easy it is to adjust the height. One final point, Don't buy a mower from Walmart or Home Depot. Go to a dealer with a parts and service department.

are electric lawn mower better than gas?

MATADOR

I am thinking about buying a lawn mower, electric or gas, does anyone has any experience on the different benefits you can get from either one?, would also like to know what are good brands.
By the way , I do have a small front and back yard.

Answer
Another option is a manual mower. I've been using one for a few years on a small .25 acre lot. It takes me about 45 minutes to do my lawn. The only drawbacks are it doesn't cut tall or wet grass very well. If you cut weekly - or sometimes more - it does quite well.

You don't have to worry about gas or batteries or cords. Just pull it out and start mowing. Best of all, it's quiet.

Where can I find an MTD lawn mower with an automatic transmission?

best lawn mower manufacturers image

Josh

Hi, I'm researching for a friend of mine who is looking for an MTD lawn mower. It HAS to have an automatic transmission (she's stubborn that way). Can anyone tell me if MTD even makes automatic transmissions? If not, can you recommend a brand of lawn mower I should look into for an automatic transmission. This woman is so stubborn, she will not take it unless it has a gas and brake pedal on the right side. She will not be happy otherwise.

Answer
MTD does make mowers with automatic transmissions, but I don't know if they are sold under the MTD name. I know Lowe's, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply sell MTD products, and I'm sure there are other stores as well.

MTD also makes mowers under alot of other names, including Troybilt sold at Lowes, lots of store brands. Usually you can look under the seat or hood and it will show the manufacturer. So if she is set on an MTD you can braoden your search.

Hope this helps,

Alan

Why are lawn mowers so expensive?

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.

Any suggestions for a lawn mower(s) for 3-4 acres to mow?

best riding lawn mower for 3 acres image

My husband and I are looking into buying a lawn mower/tractor to mow about 3 - 4 acres. We are thinking about either a JD 2210 or JD 4115. Does anyone have a suggestion of any others, especially of lesser cost, but the same quality for the amount of mowing to be done? Also, suggestions on which size of deck and the amount of time it would take to mow this amount would be great. We have a Torro with a 54" deck now, but we are sharing it with my father-in-law and it is becoming a hassle to take back and worth every week or so. Plus, we have to get the bushhog to use too. We use the Torro for yard (about 1.5 acres) and the bushhog for the other acres. That's why we need one that would be great to do it all! ~thanks

Answer
I'd Look at exmark or grasshopper's..., any 42 inch with a hydro riding mower will do 1.5 acres easy though... I'd also think about simplicity/snapper mowers as well. Simplicity owns snapper.

How much is it to cut an acre of land with gas currently at $3.65 a gallon?

BrandonP

I am currently looking for a house to buy and there are a couple that I like but I have a concern about the grass cutting cost. Does anyone have an idea on how much it would be to cut an acre of land using your own push or riding lawn mower? Any idea on how long it might take to cut an acres of grass? by the way I mean flat land with no hills.

Answer
It will take one hour with a 48" riding lawn mower and one gallon of gas. One hour of spraying the beds for weeds.
True cost: High school kid,$20, gas, $4, herbicide, $5
