best lawn mower to buy 2012 image

Okay, I bought a BRAND NEW in spring of 2012, right out of the box, push button start, push mower!
I used it plenty of times and have NOT had ANY problems with it.
Two weeks ago, on a wednesday, I put gas in it, filled it up, on my merry routine, and it would not start for the life of me!
So, the next day, I tried starting it AGAIN.. And again, it would NOT START!
I tried both the starter button and pulling it..
The NEXT DAY I try it again...and YET AGAIN it WILL NOT START!!!
..okay, I left it for the weekend hoping that maybe the gas would make its way to the engine..
On TUESDAY of the next week, I tried starting it and still NOTHING!!!
Now, I'm pissed! I let it sit in the garage for, now, another whole freaking week letting the gas settle and evaporate whatever the hell it's gotta do!

Today, I go outside, and try again!!!!
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

I took off the filter, cleaned it, try making the engine suck the gas in, I had it ALMOST start but it didn't turn over, I pulled the string to start it, it went VROOM dun-dun-dun---d-d-d-dundun-d-d-dun and it died!

Take note, last time I used it and it ran, I left no gas in it, the tank is so damn small I can hardly do my whole lawn and I have almost an acre. But this always happens..

So, I don't have a primer button, I put new oil in it, new gas, cleaned the filter, charged the batter...
Still won't start..

...I'm so glad I'm a patient man or I swear to god,
I would @#$%^$# DRAG this mower to the dump!

Anyway, what do you think?
Thanks for any advice!
Much appreciated!

Answer
First of all, avoid the temptation to throw it out and calm down although I know it's frustrating.. Is the mower under warranty? I'd have the dealer repair it if so.

If not...I would pull the spark plug and see if it's getting spark....remove the plug, reattach the plug wire to the plug tip, hold the plug threaded base or electrode to the metal of the engine using an insulated pliers and crank over the engine. If the plug has a bright bluish spark at the electrode, then the ignition is working OK. If no spark, you have ignition problems which a shop would have to look at. I doubt the spark plug would be too worn or need to be regapped but you may want to install a new plug.

The next step is to try starting the engine with a little carb cleaner sprayed into the carb throat (remove air filter if there is one)...or pour a teaspoon of gas into the plug hole and reinstall the plug....then try starting. If the engine starts and dies...repeat putting a little gas in the plug hole and restart until it stays running. May take a few tries. Or keep spraying a little carb cleaner spray into the carb throat and restart until the engine runs by itself. Replace air filter after you get the engine running. Sometimes the small passages in the carb can get gummed up from old gas which needs to be purged out and flushed by running the engine with fresh gas. Best to use products like Stabil or Seafoam in every tank of gas to keep any gas in the carb from gumming up over time....especially when storing in the off season. Parts stores carry carb cleaner spray and Stabil or Seafoam products.

Is there a kill switch for the engine which shuts down the engine if a handle is released? If there is , that could be a problem if the cable from the handle to the switch is out of adjustment or the switch itself. It sounds more like you have spark or carb problems...most likely from stale gas in the carb.

I need to raise 1200 dollars in a little over a month?

So basically as a first generation American, my parents don't have much. I want to apply for the Texas-Oklahoma Convention Liasion of Key Club and to do so it requires I go to International Convention 2011-2012. Well, it's in Orlando, Florida and an approximate estimation by the immediate past governor rang up to $1200+ dollars. I have a job but it doesn't pay much (minimum wage for 3ish hours a week). Another thing is my mom is very anti-key club. She got mad at me for going to District Convention and not getting an award. Actually she wasn't mad at me, she said I should never go back because I didn't gain anything. If I don't gain something very valuable in any situation, she throws a fit. But that is a whole different story. I need a real game plan here and I realize I'm overshooting but anything helps so please, How can I raise 1200 dollars in about a month?

Answer
Get a truck. Troll your neighborhood for cast-off and unwanted, but sellable items. Bring the items home. Clean them up. Take pictures of them. Place ads on craigslist.org in your area. Include the pictures, a good description, and your phone number.

If the items you have found are in demand, your phone will begin ringing almost as soon as you place the craigslist ads.

I have done this for the past two years and I have been making $200 per week. The best sellers:
Living room furniture, lamps, desks, lawn equipment (working or not. I sold a broken Honda mower for $30), snow boards ($30), power equipment (I found an Emglo air compressor and sold it for $90), luggage (average price $7 to $15 for 4-wheelers), etc.

Last Week, I sold a recliner sofa ($60), a 61-inch Flat Screen TV ($40), and a golf putting practice machine ($10). And somebody wants to buy the Tama Drumset I found. They are willing to pay $150.

Today, I sold a NEC 17 inch computer flat screen monitor ($20), an easy chair with ottoman ($30), a Yamaha electronic keyboard ($40), and a pair of wood nightstands ($40).

I know that a lawn will do better with sharp mower blades but how long will the "edge" last on a blade? Also whats the life expectancy of a mower blade?

Answer
Every coupld of years should do it. Life expectancy of a mower blade depends on how much it is used and what brand you buy. The quality can vary greatly. On average they should last several years. It helps to clean them and oil them.

Is it better to mulch grass or to use regular blades and blow the grass out the side chute?

I own a John Deere Z225 mower with a mulching kit and mulching blades. I mow 6 to 8 lawns a week and lately I've had a lot of problems with the cutting quality. I've had to mow over the grass twice because it's so long and afterwards there are still clumps. Is it better to take off the mulching deck and blow the grass out the side chute of the mower or will this make an even bigger mess? I'm tired of going over the grass twice. Also, if I were to take off the mulching kit, would I put the regular blades on?

Answer
The beauty of mulching is that you don't usually have to do any raking or clean-up. And also you are blasting the chopped up nutrients back into the lawn.
If you are having to go back over the lawn twice, it sounds as if your blades are not sharp enough and maybe you are not mowing often enough.
I always make sure my blades are sharpened - I do it myself - because there is nothing more frustrating than trying to mow with dull blades. I mow 8 lawns and sharpen my blades at least once a week.
I don't mow my lawns once a week ; I mow when needed, weather permitting, and try not to let the grass get ahead of me. Another thing, make sure that the underside of your deck is kept clean. Blow out any accumulated clippings with a hose as often as needed ; preferably when the clippings are still "fresh".
I would never go back to side discharge. Too often you have to rake and dispose of the clippings. This is not only time consuming and a pain in the neck , it also robs the lawn of good nutrients.
If you take off the mulching kit , you can leave the mulching blades on. They work fine.
Hope this helps you out !

Can I sodder a bar to my lawn mower?

Mike

I bought an used lawn mower that has the option of bagging what you mow but it didn't come with a bag. I have a bag from a different lawn mower that would work great if I can attach a metal bar to my mower so the bag has something to keep it in place.

I've tried using JB Weld glue and it holds the bar in place for about 3 times mowing, but then the glue breaks. Wire welding the bar onto the mower would be a great option but I don't have a wire welder and I don't know anyone that does. Could I sodder the bar to the mower?

Answer
Probably not. Like the JB weld, it will not last.

You might try wrapping wire around the joint you're trying to establish, THEN use the JB weld. That way the JB is doing more of a job of keeping the wire wrapping in place while the wire does the job of holding the metal in place. OR make or buy a clamp that can hold the bar in place.

But why not get a mulching blade for your lawn mower? That way you don't have to worry about catching grass and filling up the land fill.

Hope this helps.

We are looking at a 717a commerical zero turn and a residential zero turn. We mow about 4 acres, slight hills, some trees to go around. How long would we expect either of these mowers to last with regular maintenance and upkeep? Would we be better off going with a lawn or garden tractor?

Answer
If you are really going to mow 4 acres regularly, choose the commercial mower. They are made for mowing lots of land and for many more hours of usage. They cost more but last a very very long time with regularly scheduled maintenance of engine and equipment. There are commercial zero turn machines that have attachments if you want that type of machine. "Walker Mowers" make residential mowers to commercial spec. Go check them out, there are about 5 or six different attachments, even front loaders! Check out your warranty time periods, also. That is very important, especially with 4 acres!!!

why does my lawn tractor engine bog down sometimes?

EpicRacer

i just put a new craftsman 17.5hp single cylinder engine in my tractor. when i push the throttle full, it lags a bit to get up to speed. when i engage the mower blades, the rpms drop slightly, not a lot, but there is a noticable difference. when i mow uphill, the rpms also drop a little more, and if i mow in 5th gear they drop further. it also bogs down when i hit a thick patch of grass, but it always moves fast enough to cut the grass cleanly.

what is the cause of this?
this just doesnt seem normal to me. it doesnt feel as powerful as my old 17hp engine. the old engine never bogged down unless i hit a really thick area of grass. it revved quickly and always maintained a steady rpm, give or take a couple hundred rpms.

is there a break-in period for small engines?
its a Briggs& Stratton with the craftsman label, part of the I/O series engine.
im hoping the engine just needs to be broken in. my old B&S could do anything- take a full 42" bite on damp (i dont mow WET grass) grass and barely bog down; i could do wheelies and lay some rubber down the driveway, it just had mega torque for its size, this one cant do those things.

Answer
You say you have a craftsman 17.5 hp single cylinder engine?..Funny, I have been in this business for 20 years and craftsman does not make engines...what I would need to know is...is it a Briggs and Statton?..or a Tecumseh?..
What you are describing sounds like a twin opposed engine and what it does going up and down hills.... which if that were the case...the oil slinger works in a different way..but, it is not warrantable if you have the twin opposed going up and down hills...not what they are made for...but, if you have the single cylinder engine I would have to ask..did you do this yourself?..Or did a shop do it?..We have to set the rpms right and I use a light that helps..though I can go by sound..most people that do it themselves invariably do it by sound...which is almost always wrong, since you don't work around this type of equipment day in and day out..that is why they have us...we go to school for it..every year..without fail.. Another thing..when you are cutting grass, you don't use the whole width of a mower to make a full cut...use a 3/4 cut so as not to bog down...and I would also have to ask this...are you mowing after it rains?..while the grass is still wet?...Big no no..though people never listen to us until they have blown their engine and want to blame us?...here is a good trick...before you mow...spray pam or another cooking spray underneath the mower housing, where the blades are...be surprised, won't have that build-up of grass on it when you are finished...I have tried to tell my customers to use a hose and they will tell me I do!..this is when something such as their bearings go out...we know better..Just so you know, craftsman does not make the engines...trust me..look at the blower housing, do you see the Briggs symbol or the Tecumseh symbol..there is only one other engine that you would have...doubt it is that one...though sears does have a few...but, on the zero turn radius...and it's an expenseive little baby....but, do watch the oil..make sure it is on the mark, and use only HD 30...if all else fails...go to Wal-mart, or sears, or look in your local phone book for a dealer of these engines near you..they will tell you the same thing that I have told you...

So in march 2013 i would really like to visit some of my friends in spain! i live in Virginia and plane tickets are around 780-815$ How can I save up money in 7 months to go? i'm 15 dso it's hard to find a job where the minimum work age is 16

Answer
You will have to postpone the Spain trip until 2014. By then you are old enough to get a part time job when you turn 16 and can save up the money.

At 15 you can take a first aid course and then offer to babysit for friends and neighbors. Other than that there is recycling aluminum cans, doing chores for neighbors and family and the old lemonade stand and the lawn mower.

1989 Ford Yt18h Lawn tractor has no spark?

Brandon

I parked this tractor in the spring of 2013. I went to go start it and move it out of my way and it wouldn't start. I found that I wasn't getting any spark so I went to an identical parts motor and swapped out the ignition coil. It still doesn't have spark but it turns over so one would think that all of the safety switches are operating properly. I removed the 12 volt ignition coil wire from the coil and jumpered 12 volts from the battery to the ignition coil to bypass the key switch and it still didn't work. What else could it be? Thanks.

Answer
I am sure you have a safety switch problem. You can try to start it by jumping directly to the starter however the ignition system is on a different circuit. Seat switches, PTO (Deck) switches, an sometime clutch switches can be out of adjustment, broken etc. I had one of those mowers, it maybe the electrical mower switch, it operates the deck, but will not let the engine start if it is on or broken. These engines have magnetron ignition coils which are simply grounded out to shut down the engine. Somewhere that circuit is grounded out and not letting the ignition operate properly.

Lawn Mower question, if you have experience mowing lawns?

best lawn mower for zoysia on Lawn Care : Garden World

You may be

For just a small lawn, do you think a reel mower is ok, or will they get rusted up and hard to push after a while.

What do you think, reel, electric, gas.

I need to buy one, but it's just a small lawn about 20 feet by 15 feet.

Answer
It depends on how big your lawn is, and what type of grass you have.

My old lawn was about the same size as yours and I used a reel mower very effectively on it. But with some "cool season" grasses (bluegrass, rye, fescue), you really have to keep up with it. Taller grass can be dificult to cut w/ a reel mower.

If you have a Southern grass, like Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine - they are great mowers. You'd definitely be better off using a reel mower on one of these.

You can pick up a new reel mower for about $60, so it's not a big investment. A gas or electric will run you considerably more.

What happens if my Zoysia grass lawn is cut/ mowed too short?

magast91

My father-in-law was in town last week. He took it upon himself to mow our lawn, but failed to realize our mower has a flat tire. My poor lawn received the punishment. I know Zoysia grass is not supposed to be shorter than 1- 1.5 inches. But none of the information I find actually says what happens if it gets cut too short! Will my lawn die? What's going happen exactly? How long will it take for the grass to grow back and look healthy again? Please, your help is needed.
The current height of the grass is about 1/2 an inch.

Answer
The grass will probably grow back it is pretty persistent. I would say just give it a dose of fertilizer if yo haven't done so this spring and don't worry about it . As long as it is not cut that short on a regular basis it will survive.

I have a medium sized backyard and small lawn....so I dunno which one to choose, as there are lot of lawn mowers to choose from. I am looking at a range under $400...so tell me what is the best and which store is good to shop from?

Thanks and love u all :)
Can someone say what is the best a self propelled one or a push mower and why?!!

Answer
I just go with Craftsman (Sears). The best is Deere (very expensive) and the next best are Honda and Toro (both expensive). Craftsman is acceptable and significantly less expensive. With Craftsman, you will have no problem staying well below $400.

As for model, I like one that will mulch and rear bag, my option. I always get push mowers but if you need "assistance", you could get a wheel-drive mower (front or rear drive). One thing about push mowers, the bigger the wheels, the easier to push.

What expenses should I plan for when moving into a house?

nemahknatu

I am in a dorm room now, the rent is ~$5600/year. The guy with the house is asking $375/person/month (3 people) and he will cover the utilities. Cable internet/tv is extra ($80 which will be split b/t at least 2 of us=>just under $30 each up to $40 each), and it is 15 minutes from campus (@ 40mph). I get pretty good gas mileage, but even one trip to campus and back per day 5 days a week would mean an extra $32.44/month and that is using my highway mpg rather than in-town mpg (which would raise the price). I'm not sure whether he would make us keep up the lawn (mowing, etc.). Do you think he would expect that of us? If he does, then we would either have to do it ourselves (and buy gas, a lawn mower, etc.), or we would have to pay someone to do it (twice a month for 1/3 of the year means $160/year=$13.33/month). Do you think my estimations are reasonable, and what would be any other expenses that I would have to pay for (excluding groceries)? Would it be worth it?

Answer
Probably not worth it...here's the math:
$375/mo * 12 mo (unless your lease is less) = $4500
cable @ $40/mo * 12 = $480
gas @35/mo (and let's be honest, even though I live 15 min from campus, I spend closer to $70 on gas most months thanks to high prices) so assume $60/mo *12 = $720
you must specify in the lease who is respoinsble for upkeep of the house...if it is you then another $160-200/yr
also, include the cost of a commuter parking pass for the campus...usually runs about $350-400 a semester (at least from colleges I've been to) so that's another $800 a year or so
PLUS some colleges charge more tuition if you are living off campus so also consider that...

total that would be: $6700 on the high end... (plus any extra tuition)

also consider that he might mean utilities to be JUST: HOA (housing fees, taxes), water, sewage, trash and not include gas and electricity in there...

Although I love living in my apartment now, as an undergraduate living in the dorms was the smartest idea...you are close to friends for help with homework, you have fast internet, you can get to class regardless of weather issues, you don't have to deal with mail, packages, lease problems, broken things, etc...

I'd recommend living in the dorms as an undergrad and striking out on your own after that.

good luck and I hope this helped (I did consider this myself as a senior in college but I'm glad I stayed in the dorms)

Answer
Look to the manufacturer for what to do. Do it on-line.
Are you sure it's the right bag and just as important are you sure that mower is made for a bag.
You just cant make a mower into one that holds the grass if it's not already capable of doing that.

I remember seeing a gardener using a tool once to cut the grass in our backyard because he didn't want to deal with hauling the lawn mower back there. Maybe it was a weed wacker? What equipment do you recommend I use instead of dealing with a big lawn mower to cut grass?

Answer
How about one of those old fashioned push mowers. They use no gas, just your energy. They are lightweight, and work fine for a small yard. I got mine for about $85 at Home Depot last year. I use it for very small grassy areas in the yard. Good luck!

What is the machine that gardeners use called?

Q. What is the machine that they use on the border of the grass and concrete? It's a tiny lawn mower kind of thing with a circular blade in it and it makes a scraping noise when it hits the concrete. It's very annoying and I'd like to know what it is called and what the purpose of it is. Thanks!

Answer
An edger?

An edger (also known as a lawn edger or stick edger) is a garden tool used to cleanly separate a lawn from a walkway or other paved surface, such as a concrete sidewalk or asphalt path. Edgers may be manual or automated, typically employing a small two-stroke gasoline motor or an electric motor. Use of an edger defines a clear separation between the lawn and the walkway, imparting a finished appearance that is neater than can be achieved by merely mowing over the border of the lawn and walkway (which frequently permits tufts of low-growing grass to hang over onto the walkway, resulting in an irregular or ragged appearance).

What's an efficient way to get rid of yard weeds?

Deborah

I have a big yard that's full of weeds, some of them with points on them. I always use a hand weed wacker but it takes hours upon hours to get it to look halfway decent. I don't have the room or the money to buy a lawn mower. What do you recommend that's a small and efficient appliance to maintain this yard?

Answer
To get rid of weeds in your front yard you may want to spray them with Roundup. This herbicide kills all plants, so don't let it drift onto plants or lawn that you want to keep. There is no easy way to get rid of weeds organically. You will probably need to hoe or pull them up. A tip: it is easier to pull weeds when the soil is slightly moist. Before you plant the garden, prepare the soil for planting and water it. Allow it to sit unplanted for a couple of weeks so weed seeds can germinate and be cleared before you plant. Another method to use it to cover the soil with heavy plastic for 1 - 2 months to solarize it. This can kill diseases, insects and some seeds. Using mulch also cuts down on weeds. You can use a rototiller to get rid of the weeds, but that potentially may create more of them in the long run. Rototilling will bring up weed seeds buried in the soil and it chops up roots into multiple pieces, some of which can sprout.

the John Deere brand 42" lawn tractor is two years old, original battery. just got through a mild winter with no tractor activity since October. The battery is dead. Hooked it to a Sears 2-10-50 amp charger set at 10 for the last four hours. the needle started at about 11:45 if it were a clock face. Now it's at about 10:00.

Is dead after this winter normal? It didn't happen last year.
What should I expect the life of the battery to be?
How should the needle behave if it was charging normally?
Would I damage the charger or the battery if I move it to 50 amp setting and leavet their. That setting seems to be for Starting not charging and when I put the button on 50 the needle jumps over to about 2:00 (on a clock face).

Thanksfor any info/advise that makes sense.

Answer
I'm NOT an expert on batteries, after being in the electrical / electronic business for over 30 years, but, I can tell you 1 thing, a lead/ acid battery can " poop " out on you because of non-use. The way that this battery works is that the acid eats away at the plates and causes a chemical reaction that makes an electrical differentiation between the + and - side of the battery. If the battery is left to it's own device, it will eat it's self. When used the battery will use all of it's plates and poles, when not used it will erode the closest poles and give you a " dead cell ". Other than going out in the dead of winter and driving you lawnmower around, there is NO GOOD WAY, that I know of, to preserve your battery. The same thing happens if you let your car or truck sit for a few months, the battery would, simply " poop out " on you. You might try a solar, trickle charger, they let the battery stay heated, which is good. Other than that, expect to replace the " pain-in-the-butt " about every 2 years. Hope this helps, don't be dismayed, a lot of people have this same problem.

i will be 18 years of age on November 14, 2011..btw

Answer
It's tough for young people these days. I'm sorry your home situation is unpleasant.

First of all, regarding your father's delinquent child support? If your Dad owes a year's worth of child support, your mother needs to pursue the matter IMMEDIATELY to make sure he pays. The courts can put a lien on your father's salary through his place of employment and take it directly out of his paycheck.

HOWEVER, please understand that child support money won't go directly to you. It goes to your mother. It's purpose is to help her raise you (ie., buy you food and clothes, etc.). So don't count on getting any money from child support for yourself personally, unless your mother has agreed to give you some of it.

Babysitting is a good way to make money for a teenage girl. When school is over, you might be able to get a job as a nanny. You can also apply to some Temp Agencies and try to get temporary jobs if there aren't any permanent jobs available. If you have access to a mower, you can mow lawns during the summer.

I'm sorry to say this, but until you actually get a steady job and have some money accumulated, you won't be able to rent an apartment. You'll need a full month's rent to put down just for a deposit, plus the first month's rent. That's a minimum of $2,000 upfront and you're going to have other expenses (electricity, heating [unless they are included in the rent], transportation costs, furniture, etc.) and ideally you should have at least $1,000 set aside in an emergency fund.

The best thing to do--and I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it does work--is to make a conscious decision to not let the drama in your family bother you, and to not let yourself get caught up in it yourself. Break their pattern of behavior by removing yourself from it. If they argue, simply close your mouth and don't argue back. If they shout, simply close your mouth and don't shout back. Break the pattern by changing your own behavior.

If it's other people arguing with each other that bothers you, just say to yourself, "It's between them, I have nothing to do with it; and then just don't get involved. I got home from work and I got on the john deere and mowed the lawn. Then it hit me, I am killing the planet. I could possibly have raised the tempreture of the planet by 7-8 degree's. The south pole is melting as we speak due to my finely manicured lawn.

So I was thinkig how can I make ammends? Then it hit me, how about sending some of my hard earned cash to Algore? I mean how else can we recifiy the damage I have done to mother earth other than sending money to a politician so he can fly around in private jet's and ride around in limo's? I think the temperature dropped by a couple of degrees when I grabbed my checkbook with just the intention of sending Algore some cash. I had no idea the effect of cash on the environment when retardedly given to a liberal charlitan.

So where can I get a good deal on some carbon credits. Perhaps NASA has a couple laying around they forgot about? I s there a secondary market for unused carbon credits?
Perhaps I can melt down my rider and have the metal turned into sporks for the homeless to use in charity kitchens?

Answer
Gosh, I'm guessing that the Gore-ites are gonna want you to mow that lawn of yours with a push mower now. Of course, that will mean lots more work and more sweat and effort, which means that you'll get all hot and stuff and, well, that will cause the air temperature to rise. Can't have that! You'll be partially responsible for causing another iceberg to melt! Yikes! On second thought, forget the John Deere mower, forget the push mower and just let your yard grow wild. Once it's thick as a forest, embrace the greenery and become one with it. Then, and only then, will you have achieved the level of Green Gore-ite (carbon credits non-refundable and must be redeemed before December 31, 2012).

What expenses should I plan for when moving into a house?

best lawn mower under $400 on Lawn Mower Ramp
best lawn mower under $400 image

Veronica S

I just went on my first house tour and was amazed by the random stuff I found left behind. One house had a chicken figure with feathers glued on it. One garage had 3 lawn mowers, 2 printers, 5 tv's, 3 bikes, and much more...

I am wondering what funny/random/gross/amazing things people have found while touring homes or moving in.

Answer
I once sold a house in the UK that had been repossessed and had been left with a tap running for at least a fortnight.

The house had an abundance of fruitflies, mould, mildew damp and by the time we had sold it, it even had mushrooms and grass growing on the carpet.

My dad was looking for a book on wind energy?

HellsBells

My father saw this book that you could convert a old lawn mower engine into some kind of wind turbine or something?? I am not sure even really what it was about but was hoping someone on here could point me in the right direction.

Answer
He might be thinking of the Mother Earth news "Handbook of Home Made Power," which is not all that good. There are maybe 4 projects worth looking at, but they comprise only a small portion of the book. The book is more about just talking about home made power.

Be forewarned, there is a lot of trash on the web, and some people try the dangerous shortcut of using plastic pipe for windmill blades- this can have deadly consequences. For the propellers, he should stick with the Hugh Piggott design.

What you think me saving up money to set up my business?

best lawnmower for money on Electric lawn mowers: get ready for the summer | Money | theguardian ...
best lawnmower for money image

suhail_08

What you think me saving up money to set up my business? I am 16 and think it will help. I know want to do somthing in busienss in the future.

Answer
No. Do not save for a business. Start one now; it will teach you things they donât teach in school. Get a tax number now.

Examples:

Get a lawnmower; cut grass; deduct lawnmower from income etc.

Example:

THE AMERICAN DREAM.....
An unemployed man is desperate to support his family of a wife and three kids. He applies for a janitor's job at a large firm and easily passes an aptitude test.

The human resources manager tells him, "You will be hired at minimum wage of $5.35 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address so that we can get you in the loop. Our system will automatically e-mail you all the forms and advise you when to start and where report on your first day"

Taken aback, the man protests that he is poor and has neither a computer nor an e-mail address.

To this the manager replies, "You must understand that to a company like ours that means that you virtually do not exist. Without an e-mail address you can hardly expect to be employed by a
High-tech firm. Good day."

Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having $10 in his wallet, he walks past a farmers' market and sees a stand selling 25lb. Crates of beautiful red tomatoes. He buys a crate, carries it to a busy corner and displays the tomatoes. In less than 2 hours he sells all the tomatoes and makes 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 and arrives home that night with several bags of groceries for his family.

During the night he decides to repeat the tomato business the next day.

By the end of the week he is getting up early every day and working into the night. He multiplies his profits quickly.

Early in the second week he acquires a cart to transport several boxes of tomatoes at a time, but before a month is up he sells the cart to buy a broken-down pickup truck.

At the end of a year he owns three old trucks. His two sons have left their neighborhood gangs to help him with the tomato business, his wife is buying the tomatoes, and his daughter is taking night courses at the community college so she can keep books for him.

By the end of the second year he has a dozen very nice used trucks and employs fifteen previously unemployed people, all selling tomatoes.

He continues to work hard.

Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of nice trucks and a warehouse that his wife supervises, plus two tomato farms that the boys manage. The tomato company's payroll has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work. His daughter reports that the business Grossed over one million dollars.

Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically.

When the man replies that he doesn't have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance man is stunned, "What, you don't have e-mail? No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be today if you'd had all of that five years ago!"

"Ha!" snorts the man. "If I'd had e-mail five years ago I would be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making $5.35 an hour"

How can the Federal Reserve lend money at interest if they're the source lender?

kkmm333

Wont the money supply eventually dry up this way?
But don't banks borrow their money from the Federal Reserve?

Answer
This is actually a common misunderstanding on loans and interest. But, in reality, money can create several times it's value in economic activity.

Let's illustrated with an example...

You have a one dollar bill.

You have two friends without money.

And in this little friendship economy, you all have certain skills of value.

You provides hair cuts and pedicures for just $1 each

Friend A does pedicures and manicures for just $1 each

Friend B does manicures and haircuts for just $1 each
.

And you are all planning to go to a party but are looking pretty shabby.

So Friend A says: "Could I borrow a dollar? I want to buy a manicure from Friend B". You say "Sure, at 100% interest. That is, I want $2 in return." Friend A: 'OK"

Then Friend B says to Friend A: "Could I borrow a dollar? I want to buy a haircut". Friend B says "Sure, but I have to charge 100% interest. That is, I want $2 in return." Friend B: 'OK"

Then you decide you want a pedicure but have no money. So you say to Friend B: "Could I borrow a dollar?". Friend B says "Sure, but I have to charge 100% interest. That is, I want $2 in return." You say "OK"

So let's stop here a second and look at this. In our litte friendship economy, we have a total of $3 in loans and $3 in interest to be paid back. How can we possible pay this all back with a single dollar???

Easy, with economic activity.

- You buy a pedicure from Friend B and hands over $1.
- Friend B buys a manicure from Friend A and hands over $1.
- Friend A buys a haircut from you and hands over $1.

-- then the process repeats until you are all looking pretty spiffy with your manicure, pedicure, and haircut.

But there is still the question of the loans and interest,

- So you take your $1 to friend B and say "Here is half the money I owe you"
- Friend B takes the $1 to Friend A and says "Here is half the money I owe you"
- Friend A takes the $1 to you and says "Here is half the money I owe you"

Then

- you take your $1 to friend B and say "Here is the other half the money I owe you"
- Friend B takes the $1 to Friend A and says "Here is the other half the money I owe you"
- Friend A takes the $1 to you and says "Here is the other half the money I owe you"

So at the end of our example:

- You and your friends got $9 worth of personal grooming
- You and your friends each received and paid $3 in loans and $3 in interest

All with a single dollar!

Another example:

- I have $100 cash and a $100 lawn mower. You have nothing.
- I loan you $100 cash at 10% interest.
- You buy my loan mower for $100.cash
- I hire you to mow my lawn for $10 a week.
- You pay me back $110 at $10 a week.

After 11 weeks:
- You have a $100 lawnmower (after starting with nothing)
- You have paid off $100 in loans and $10 in interest
- I've received 11 weeks of lawnmowing service
- I end up with my $100 cash

So the key point to the answer to your question is:
- A single dollar can create many times it's face value in transactions
- A single dollar could theoretically pay off the entire national debt with enough transactions over time. (OK so it would take a $1 at transaction a second for over 300,000 years to do it but you get the idea)

Hope that helps

Need to purchase a riding lawn mower, help me choose one please?

best riding lawn mower for 5 acres image
Q. Moving to 5 acre property, going to need more than the walk behind I now have. Which are dependable brands? Do I go with zero turn radius mowers? The zero turns really seem to fly, and cutting grass, while necessary, is not my idea of a great way to spend my off hours. Lawn service pros, and anyone else knowledgeable, I need your advice.

Thank you.

Answer
"Nothing runs like a Deere".....

How do you make grass grow better in a poor horse pasture?

q.h.luvr

My two geldings are living in a 5-acre pasture all to themselves, and they have eaten most of the grass and there isn't much left for them. I can make it to the barn about every other day, but not quite every day, and I need to make sure they are being fed enough. They are both in good health now, but I don't want them to get too skinny.

Answer
first off I would cross fence the pasture to rotate pasture area for your horses while one side is growing the other side can be used to feed for next year since there is going to be a frost soon with in the next month about the middle of october not much grass is going to grow this year for the rest of this year. I would get a round bale feeder and round bales. if you have a riding lawn mower and can find 5 feet of old chain link fence and a wood pallet drag the chain link fence with the pallet on it over the pasture to break down all the horse patties to fertilize the pasture and give a better area for the grass to grow

Why is one side of my riding mower deck on the ground and the other side up where it should be?

best lawn mower of 2011 image

I know very little about repairs but if I know what to look for, I think I can get it fixed. It is Huskee LT4200 (2011?) lawn tractor. Over time, the left hand side of the deck has gradually started to sag. It is getting so bad now that I have to put the deck height at the highest setting and the left side still touches ground. Right side is up where it should be, but the left side is a disaster. I don't know if there is maybe a spring that got stretched out or a bolt that may be missing, or a bent bar... something. Any suggestions of what I should look for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
I think that you should remove the deck and look for a broken bracket or a missing retainer clip. Each brand of mower uses a different deck and lifting mech, so it is hard to say what your issue is without being able to see it. Look in your owner's manual for deck leveling procedure, as you go through the procedure you may come across the problem. Could be simple or something broken. Good luck.

Can a weak battery effect the way my engine idles and runs? It sounds bad after sound system was installed.?

Travis

I am not sure if the guy at Car Toys drilled into the gas tank or something else when he grounded out the system or if it is something else but I noticed a hissing sound coming from under my car as soon as I got to my friends house after the installation. I was freaking out for a bit and then it stopped only to come back after we got back from getting a bite to eat. I have a Hyundai Genesis 2011. We got out of the car to make sure the noise hadn't returned and sure enough it had. My car sounded more like a damn lawn mower rather than its normal purring sound. On top of that the hissing sound was almost as if there was air leaking out of something. We came to the conclusion that if it wasn't a hole in the gas tank, then it had to be the fuel line or something. We examined it and after awhile we turned the engine off for a few minutes. When we turned it back on the hissing noise was gone and the exhaust sounded better but the engine was clicking pretty hard only subtly however. It still has a factory battery in it.
It's a 700 watt mono block amp and I'm running one 12" subwoofer. I'm almost positive the battery is going low bc at one point I could run the ignition for 10 minutes at a time without the warning coming on and now even if I get in the car for 1 minute with the ignition on it gives me a warning telling me to start my engine. Another note: I was driving home tonight and I stomped on the accelerator a little bit to see if it had limited power and sure enough it seemed like it wasn't near as responsive and the exhaust sounded really bad. It didn't feel like the same car...

Answer
I would look for a loose vacuum line or maybe a disconnected sensor in the engine bay, he may have disconnected something when connecting power to the system and forgot to plug it back in.

Answer
Use the regular unleaded ( 87 octane ) for all lawn mowers. The only reason to use higher octane would be for higher RPM motors, like chain saws or raceing engins.
