lawn mower for putting green.HELP!?

Darren

okay.my parents have decided to let me get a putting green for my backyard because we have the right soil etc and it will be relitivly in-expensive.but they are not paying hundreds for a putting green mower that will cut it at the correct hight.
i understand that you need a cylinder mower and not a rotary.i have looked at some basic cylinder mowers that are in-expensive but the problem is that they only cut down as far as 10mm.i need it to cut down to 4-6 mm for it to be the correct length.

so.im wondering,if you take the wheels off the mower (which cuts at 10mm)and put on smaller wheels..then it would be lower and cut at a lower hight..would that work?
need feedback.
Thanks!

How to start a small Lawn Care Business?

Kevin C

Hey there, I'm currently in college and am looking to start up a small lawn care business next summer. I've been working at Mcdonalds the past 2 years and won't be able to stand another summer in that place. Anyways, I've already got a truck and trailer and push mower and weedeater, so I need help picking out a mower. I'd probably look into zero turns but the prices seem pretty steep, even used. And I'm not sure about a regular riding mower, if itd be fast/efficient enough. I'd be mowing mainly large home gardens and maybe small pastures. I definatly dont have more than a grand to drop on a mower to start off with. What's a good mower I should start looking for and pricerange? Also is there anything that I might not be aware of yet? Anybody with some experience in this, help me out please, Thanks

Answer
Kevin start small and build up leave riding mowers and zero turn mowers alone .

Best advice i can give is to google your question and there is a lot of information out there read and adapt what suits you i had a look to many to link and if did you might not look at another one which would have been very handy. the main theme is start with what you have how not to get screwed another word not paid for your labour and tells what equipment to use etc.

How to Mow in the Wet Grass?

aaronrreag

OK, so I mow lawns for a job. I'm only seventeen, but I have 12 and every now and then it seems like I may have to mow in the wet grass. My mower will, Clog, Shut off, and Leave Skippers. One time I mowed this guys grass while he was on vacation. The one day it was a little wet. I didn't think it looked to bad when I left, but when he came back two days later he saw dead grass and so he raked it which revealed skippers. He was ticked!! What should I do? Are there certain mowers that will NOT leave skippers when it's wet? I think it put small ruts in the yard to.
Also, sometimes my mower will leave skippers even when the grass is dry. And I make sure my blades are sharpened every few weeks.

Are there some Pro lawn people that could help me out here? I have some more questions I think too. lol

Answer
The unfortunate thing is when you have to mow when it's wet. The best thing to do in that case, is to raise the deck at least 2 notches to keep the grass from clogging the mower. You may not be able to prevent skippers, but it may help.
If you are leaving skippers when it's dry, you may be mowing too fast and missing spots. Mowing too fast, especially if you are using a riding mower, will cause skippers.

Edit: It's all well and good to tell this young man not to mow when it's wet - that's common knowledge. However; in practicality that's pretty hard to do when you have a full book of clients that want their lawns mowed. It's not that easy to change days because of rain. Although it's not ideal, every lawn care company that mows, mows in the rain or when it's wet. Unless it's flooded.

How do I keep grass from building up under my lawn mower deck?

HAWKEYE

I currently owm a Simplicity Landlord mower.

Answer
Don't mow grass. Hehe.

Ok, really now, the advice to not mow wet grass is very good. Also, don't let it get too long before you mow. Additionally, you can spray it with something (though the non-stick vegetable spray is a new one on me.) Try some of the teflon spray you can get at the nearby HomeDepot. Lastly, if you are having a lot of trouble, try raising the mower deck a little bit.

whta is the best lawn mower under 500$?

zzees

Just a standard walk/push mower.
Gas mower.

Answer
Craftsman, for my personal experience is probably the worst lawn mower known to man. I would suggest one of the Toro Personal paces. You lean into it and it goes faster. Hard to explain it without sounding like a regular push mower. Comes in handy on hills though. Push on the mower and it goes faster. On the backside of the hill, it won't drag you down. Good on gas milage. I believe they are putting out mowers that are 6.75 HP which for most residential mowers is PLENTY.

Just FYI, Home Depot probably has the best selection of good mowers. Until you talk about yard machines. They're cheap and they come with a warranty but you will definately need it. The Toro that I told you about you shouldn't have too many problems if its maintained well. Its the most bang for your buck mower you could ever get.

how do I register a warranty plan for a lawn mower ?

FRANK

Answer
There should have been paper work with the mower when you purchased it that you can fill out and mail in. Or you can go to the website of that brand and register it on line.

How do you change the drive belt on a craftsman lawn tractor model 917.270670; 42 in 18.5 hp mower?

golfjock

I am not an idiot by I want to be sure before I replace a belt that looks like it's going bad

Answer
The best way that I have found is to remove the mower deck so that you can more easily get to the belt and it's routing. Now if you look under the left foot rest of your tractor you will find a decal that clearly shows the belt routing. You can look at the diagram while you are putting the belt on. Real handy and most all Craftsman tractors have this.

Can the blades on the lawn mower actually be too short?

Becs

While I was out of town my mom came over and mowed the lawn for me. It was very nice of her, but of course, she "fixed" my lawn mower by lowering the blades and now it looks like I gave the lawn a buzz cut! Plus, my lawn is looking kinda brown. Can the blades be set too short on a lawn mower? Is it doing more harm than the good that mom was trying to do? (Please keep in mind that I'm not ripping on my mom! Bless her for doing that while I was away!)

Answer
Raise the cutting height of the machine and cut your lawn at about 21/2" - 3". That is the optimum height for the lawn, it will help keep it from going dormant when it is hot and dry and will choke out the weeds from your lawn without you having to use any weed and feed or other weed killers. Your lawn will be beautiful after a few weeks.

Does using a mulching mower kill your lawn?

~Penny Lai

I started using a mulching mower and suddenly my lawn is almost all brown.

Please help!!!

Answer
you need to adjust the height of your mower, its probably cutting your lawn to short, on the wheels theres an adjustment for height, so you can raise or lower your mower, and not cut your lawn too short.

lawn mower question please help.?

Tyler W

i need a new riding mower now im going to buy a craftsman should i get a manual or a hydrostatic transmission. my yard has some hills and im a big dude 260 pounds and i also want to tow a yard cart.

Answer
depending on how steep the hills are and what you are going to be hauling in your yard cart, you are going to be better off with a hydrostatic tranny, but you may want to look at a shaft drive mower instead of the belt drive, they do not have a drive belt, so you don't ever have to worry about it stretching and wearing out and then having to replace it. the shaft drive is much stouter as well and will pull whatever you want it to. hope this helps

What is the best mower to use on a very steep slope in my yard?

lawn mower

I am in the market for a new lawn mower. I want to buy one that can handle a hill that is 145 feet wide and goes up 20 feet over a 40 foot span...it's very steep. Is there a self-propelled mower that I could buy that can handle this job, or should I give in and hire a lawn service?

Answer
Get a Honda self-propelled walk behind mower. A 4 cycle lawnmower is better for steep hills, been doing this for 25 years. Anything else is big or too expensive, like a riding mower 54inch cut, you can't roll it. When using a riding mower, ride up and down the hill diagonally each way and everytime for the best and safest cuts.

What is a good push lawn mower?

Q. Looking at getting a new push mower. I want something what will last for a very long time, but don't want to pay hundreds of dollars. My highest I would be willing to go is 350, but would like to spend much less. The four brands I have been looking at are Troy Bilt, Craftsmen, Toro, and Snapper. Any help would be great. I have been leaning more towards the Toro or Snapper, but I don't know if all I'm paying for is the name. Any thoughts would be great.

Answer
Check out Consumer Reports. They rate Toro as one of the best year in and year out. Snapper has been around for a long time, and they know what they are doing. I have seen more older Snapper mowers then any other brand. They take a beating and keep mowing. Troy-bilt is made by MTD, the same company that builds the very cheep mowers at Wal-mart and others. Craftsman, you can find you a good one once in a while. That is the brand I hear the most complaints about. Trying to get repairs done in a timely manner is next to impossible. I think you are doing good with Toro or Snapper.

What was the average price of a riding lawn mower in 1975?

I am doing a report for my job and have googled myself to death. I am looking for the average price of a Craftsman Riding Mower -1975- current, Craftsman Walk-Behind Mower 1975-current, and a Craftsman Weed Eater 1975- current, does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could find this information? I have exhausted all options and would greatly appreciate it!

Answer
I used the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to calculate the cost of these products in 1975 dollars. To test the CPI click below:

http://www.minneapolisfed.org/research/data/us/calc/index.cfm

According to Sears.com, a Craftsman Riding Mower currently retails (on sale) for $1,299.99.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?vertical=LAWN&pid=07128721000&adCell=P3&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

By useing the CPI calculator, I have determined the cost of the mower in 1975 would be estimated at $340.34

A Craftsman Walk-Behind Mower currently retails for, $249.99.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?vertical=LAWN&pid=07137665000&adCell=P3&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

In 1975, the Craftsman Walk-Behind Mower would retail for $65.45.

A Craftsman Weed Eater currently retails for, $99.99.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Power+Lawn+Equipment&pid=07179103000&vertical=LAWN&subcat=Line+Trimmers&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

In 1975, the Craftsman Weed Eater would retail for $26.18.

What would be a good quality lawn tractor for me to buy for my acre yard.?

dalejrallt

I was looking for a good lawn tractor to mow my 1 acre yard. I have been looking at John Deere LA 175 and the husqvarna LGT2654. I was also kind of looking at the cub cadet tractors but wasn't sure what would be good. The only requirements was that I wanted the briggs and stratton v-twin engine and a 48 to 54 inch cut. So I just need a few opinions on some tractors.

Which walk-behind lawn mower has the largest blade / cutting area?

Neerdowell

I need a new lawn mower, as both my riding mower and push mower are requiring too many trips to the repair shop to stay running. I can't afford a new riding mower, but I hate the small cutting area that a walk-behind mower usually offers. Is there a walk-behind lawn mower out there that has an extra large blade that provides a much larger cutting area?
Okay, I guess I should've said consumer grade walk-behind mower. If I could afford a commercial grade walk-behind mower, I would be able to afford a consumer grade riding mower, which I can't.

Answer
There are several brands of lawn mowers that have a 22" cutting area. That is about as large as you will find on a standard push lawn mower. From there, they go down to 21, 20, and even 17". You can find one of the 22" mowers at Home Depot or Lowe's or some other store like that. To get any larger than that would require that you buy an industrial mower or professional grade mower, which as you said you can't afford.

I just bought one today from Lowes under $300. Although it's an electric start (no cords), gas, self-propelled lawn mower, they have lots of nice riding-mowers too.

Of course, they always have the plan where you buy on credit and not pay for 12 months. It's great!

what is the best riding lawn mower to buy?

sdis

what brand such as ford, honda etc.?

Answer
While I understand the concern of wanting a good, reliable brand, you should first consider your needs. How large is your yard? Do you really need a riding mower? You might save some $$$ by getting a good self-propelled push mower.

A yard with a lot obstacles? If you have the cash, consider a good ZTR (zero turn radius) mower. They're incredibly nimble, but expensive.

With a large open yard of 1 acre or less, a regular riding mower with up to a 38" deck should do. Over 1 acre, consider a mower or lawn tractor with a 42" or larger cutting deck.

I just bought a Craftsman lawn tractor that I love, so I'm prejudiced for that brand. It has a great warranty. But, you should go with the brand that you feel most comfortable with, and the dealer who seems most sincere about standing behind their product. You might also consider getting a Consumer Reports buying guide, to check reliability ratings of the individual brands.

Lawn Mower purchase?

Cyn

I need to buy a new lawn mower. I think I want electric powered because it is quieter and doesn't produce so much pollution as a gas mower. It was suggested that I buy one that is self propelled but I can't find seem to find any. What are your feelings about gas vs electric and push vs self propelled? I want to spend no more than $250 or so. Thank you.

Answer
Trade in your old gasoline-powered mower for a new manual model or an electric corded or rechargeable cordless lawn mower. You'll save time and money-and help the environment.

Manual mowers are excellent for small lawns. They are inexpensive, quiet, easy to maintain and healthy to use.

Electric mowers work well for small to medium lawns. Modern pollution controls required for utility plants make this option much cleaner than gasoline mowers.

Electric mowers are:

Inexpensive to operateâabout $5 per year for electricity.
Easy to maintainâno costly engine tune-ups or messy oil changes.
Cleanâno spilled oil or gasoline, no exhaust fumes, significantly reduced air pollution.
Quietâabout half the noise of gasoline mowers.
Easy to startâpush-button starting, no more yanking on a starter cord.

Answer
Drain the fuel from the tank and run the engine until it dies. If you can't do that, add a fuel stabilizer, Like Sta-Bil, to the fuel tank and run the engine for a few minutes. Remove the spark plug and pour a tablespoon of oil (any weight will do) into the cylinder and pull the cord a couple of times to distribute the oil, then replace the spark plug. That should do it. I have been doing this with my Honda snow blower for 7 or 8 years and it starts on the first or second pull the following year. BTW, I keep it in a shed, too.

Look to the manufacturer for what to do. Do it on-line.
Are you sure it's the right bag and just as important are you sure that mower is made for a bag.
You just cant make a mower into one that holds the grass if it's not already capable of doing that.

Toro lawn mower will not start. July 22, 2013.?

M

July 22, 2013.

I have the following Toro lawn mower. The lawn mower engine showed a continuous decline in running time. Five weeks ago, the lawn mower continued to run in perfect order. As time passed by, the engine would not run as long. The engine would run, but die after a certain time. The engine running time continued to decrease as time passed by. Now, the engine will not start.

Toro 6.5 horsepower GTS lawn mower
Toro model number 20017
Toro serial number 240121813

Tecumseh Power Company
engine model number: LV195EA
spec: 362003B
engine family: 4TPXS.1951BC

Round one: We replaced the spark plug and air filter. The engine would run for one or two seconds.

Round two: We removed and cleaned the small metal bowl attached to the carburetor with carburetor cleaner. We removed and cleaned the main jet by using a small wire. We filled the fuel tank with one-week old 87 octane unleaded fuel. The engine would run for one or two seconds.

We drained the fuel tank and filled the tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel. The engine continue to run! Hurray! We pulled the starter cord an hour later and the engine continue to run! Hurray! Two successful tests made me very happy.

When I transported the lawn mower from my friend's home to my home, I pulled the starter cord. The engine failed to start! The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

I wanted to try starting the engine the next day.

Round three: The next day, I pulled the starter cord and the engine would not start. The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

We cleaned the fuel tank with carburetor cleaner and the tiny mesh screen that serves as the fuel filter. We rinsed the fuel tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel twice and refilled the tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel.

We applied carburetor cleaner through the fuel line between the fuel tank and carburetor. We applied carburetor cleaner to the float in the small metal bowl. We did not fully disassemble the carburetor.

I pulled the starter cord and the engine would not start. The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you again for your help and guidance.

-Mark

Answer
I used to have the same problem. Every other season or so. I would remove the carburetor and spray electrical contact cleaner through all of the ports. The ports are fixed in this machine I believe, and there are no needle valves/adjustment screws. I would also stick a fine copper wire through these ports. It took about an hour start to finish including re-installing the carburetor . Ran like a raped ape after that.

What is the best riding mower?

Adam

My dad and I have been mowing some lawns commercially on the side for the past 7 or 8 years. I have one job that is about 6" to 8" tall when we mow it and it is not like city grass, it's like grass that grows in the country. It is about 5 or 6 acres of that with little trees that try to grow in the grass. That yard takes about 5 or 6 hours of mowing each time. The rest of my yards are in town and a lot smaller. For the jobs I have right now I have been using a 2007 Cub Cadet Tractor mower, 24 horsepower, 50" cut that I bought this year and I works we'll but I bought it used and it already has some problems. I recently narrowed down my selection to a mower with 24+ hp and a 42" + cut zero turn mower under $3,500. It has to be durable and be able to do this job and not fall apart. I was looking at the 2013 Hustler Raptor (23 hp Kawasaki engine, 54" cut with a really strong deck and build for $2,899) and a Bad Boy MZ Magnum (27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and a 54" deck built also really strong for $3,499) I would much rather have more hp but I heard someone say that the Kawasaki motor runs so much better, but is it as powerful as the 27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor? Any suggestions on other ztr mowers and and answer to this question of which one would be better for my job(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Our lawn and our yard isn't that big so I wouldn't really mind the corded ones, but how do they function in comparison to the gas mowers?

Any recommendations?
What kind do you have? I was looking at the corded black and decker one.

Answer
Ive been using electric mowers for over 25 yrs, black and decker best ones,i also have a homelite from home depot.Pros its quiet and requires no repairs, but a blade sharpening every couple yrs.Cons you have a cord and cant use when its raining.make sure you buy one with a button to adjust height on all 4 wheels at once.

I need a new lawn mower, but want to know which mower is best for the money?

I don't have a large yard, but actually a 'postage stamp' yard.

Which push-mower do you think is the best for the money? John Deere? Toro? Cub Cadet?

Answer
I agree, just go with Sears Craftsman. I've had mine for years, and she still cranks up, right away. If you're going with self propelled, be sure to get large rear tires with the front wheel drive. They are much easier to turn, than rear wheel drive. They also sell the ones that Charlotte was speaking about. Here's some info on them:

What Lawn Tractor Should I Get?

thebiggin4

We recently moved to a house more in the country with 12 acres and we are looking to buy a riding mower/lawn tractor. The property is 12 acres total, with a 2 acre pond, and the house and landscaped area by the pool probably covers a bit over half an acre, so we are looking at around 9.5 acres to mow. The property is completely flat with a slight grade going down towards the pond, but nothing big. My family all live in a very small (population 600) town in rural Illinois and they tell me to get the biggest John Deere I can afford.

Price aside, what would be the most efficient tractor for this job? We dont want a zero turn mower because we like the attachments (snow plow, gardening cart, etc.) that can put on a riding mower.

Answer
Yeah, lawn tractor as they are tougher and have bigger engines, especially since you'll need the PTO for a rototiller or other mechanical attachments....if you are leaning towards them as well. Also buy what can be serviced in your area easily. You don't want to be hauling it far away for service and repair.

If you are mechanical and can do the work yourself, you can look to Husqvarna (I never get that spelling correct) or some of the professional turf grass types........but I'd angle back to Deere because of the attachements. As to model, talk with the dealer to determine what you'll need for the work load you expect to be doing.

Quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less?

dmg1969

I have been looking to buy a lawn tractor since we just bought a house with a little over a half acre of grass. I have mowed it once with a push mower and won't do that again.

Can anyone recommend a quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less? I do not need a zero turn or anything fancy like that.

I was looking at the Troy-Bilt Pony 17 HP, 42 inch cut. However, it looks to me to be the exact same mower as the Bolens and the Yard Machines...all made by MTD. I found a website which pretty much rated them as junk.

I was considering a Craftsman from Sears, but all but the more expensive ones have a manual transmission (stop to change speed).

I have considered used, but am not thrilled about going that route when I can buy new for not much more.

Answer
John Deere has always made great lawn tractors and highly rated in COnsumer Reports. The same can be said for Toro. Check them out at your local Home Depot or Lowes.

What does the "new orders for durable goods" indicator measure?

Cesar

I am confused. I don't seem to understand this indicator. I tried searching it up, but I am still lost. Does this indicator measure the amount of durable goods produced in a month? Or does it mean the amount of durable goods that consumers purchase in a month? Or the amount of products a manufacturer makes in accordance to the orders placed to create that product? I would really appreciate it if anyone answers my question.

riding lawn mower repair?

warren4797

Answer
A riding mower most likely takes a paper air filter element, so don't wash it out with gas, that goes for if it has a foam filter, when you do so with a foam "pre filter" for the paper filter, don't oil it. If its a all foam air filter, do oil it.
When its being stored for over a month, use a fuel stabilizer to prevent gum deposits in the carb. When storing the engine, makes sure the tanks full to the brim, to minimize condensation, the 10 percent ethanol in gas today takes on moisture. OIl.... check it every time you start it cold.... and add when needed, this will insure it won't seize from running it low, these engines need that oil full!!. Change it every 25 hours. Use a good name brand hd-30 (high detergent) in the summer above 40 degrees. Below 40 use a multi weight, or use a synthetic 10 or 5w-30 all year round. If it has a oil filter, change it every time. Change the plug when it gets hard to start, just clean it once a year and gap it at .30 . I like to use marvel mystery oil in the gas, good carb and upper cylinder lube, and does a little cleaning. If this is a ohv engine, check the manufacturers website on clearances, and tighten or loosen the rockers to get it back within that. Also on air filters, change em more in dusty conditions, don't skimp... change em once a year, and don't try and wash a paper filter or blow it out, water closes the tiny holes in the paper, and compressed air opens them, letting in more dirt. Blades usually do last 2 or 3 years without sharpening them, just check em once in a while and sharpen or replace when needed, make sure they are balanced (nail in a post, and hang it by the bolt hole making sure its level is a good method) And last but not least, store it in a good place, if under a tarp, make sure the tarp can vent, tarps collect moisture that can get in the gas... if your tires go flat, slime is a life saver.... fix a flat is alright, but is caustic to bare steel. If its gonna be terribly cold, remove the battery and keep it in a warm place. Grease all your fittings with a good grease every 3 or 4 years maybe.

hope I covered most of it.

What lawn mower should I get for under $300?

Jessica B

Hi there...I am thinking about getting a lawn mower, and have a small front and small back yard, not a whole lot of space. I want something good quality though, that will last. I do not want to spend over $300 though....recommendations?

Answer
Buy a used mower. You'll pay half or less of the original cost new. Go to the biggest general lawn and garden machine dealer in your area and kick the tires, and/or check out local ads, including Craigslist.
Once there, it should at least start. Maintenance or a tune up after that is pretty easy.

Suggestions on a good lawn mower?

Kristen L

Hello, I need to buy a lawn mower for my yard. My yard is under an acre but is sloped in the front and has a slight hill in the back yard area. Most of the yard is grass and not tree, so there is a substantial amount of grass to mow. We now have a service that does it for us, but to cut costs and get exercise I am now looking for a new mower. my question is..what are the best brands of mowers that I can get affordably? I need one that is self propelled due to the hills and a side mulcher instead of a bagger would be helpful. I have looked into Lawnboy and craftsman and unsure of the quality. I would love to own a ride on mower however they are too pricey and my range is more like 350 and under. Also any tips if I try to find a used machine as far as what to look for? I have been looking at Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, and Walmart..unsure where it is best to buy one. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Toro Self Pace mower is the best thing out here in my opinion. My yard is about the same size as yours and I love it. It adjusts to what ever speed you want to walk, it is a mulcher, side discharge, and bagger all in one. Everyone sells them, If you have a Costco membership, they have it now.

Also when I do my yard it is equivelent to walking 3.5 miles... great exercise...

What is a good yet affordable riding lawn mower?

jeff c

Answer
the MTDs at Lowes or the Murrays at Wal Mart are good mowers and inexpensive. Iev had an MTD and my Dad has a Murray and Id say theya re comparable. Both run well, star easy, and mow good so long as you dont go too fast.

Look for one with brigs engine and dont go too wide with your cut for best results (not over 48 inches)

Affordable Lawn Services? (Teenager)?

Jordan

Hello, I am a teenager and like most other teenagers I am looking for a little extra money, without having to get a full blown job. My mom suggested that I put up flyers around the neighborhood for a lawn mowing service, and I loved the idea. I'm now debating what my price range should be. Most of the lawns around my neighborhood aren't very large (about 40 min. to mow with a push mower) and I want to provide services for people that just want a mowed lawn, none that expensive fancy stuff. Do you think a price range of 20-$40 is reasonable? If not, give me your reasonable prices. Of course the higher end like 35-40 dollars would be for larger lawns, that would take 80+ minutes.

Answer
It takes me 10 mins to mow where I live and I charge 25$ per lawn... They are all the same size.

I also have a 42" craftsman rideing mower

How can you make your own lawn roller/striper for push mower?

baseball5

Has anyone made this before and do you have any ideas or tips? I can only find information on the web for making it for a riding mower. Thanks

Answer
Here's some basic rules to follow when you make one. You want to make one that rolls not one that you drag behind. You'll end up dragging the cut grass. It will need enough weight to bend the grass. It will need to be as wide as your mower's blades. Attach the roller to your mower's arms at the lowest point just above the deck with metal or wood bars, not chains. It could roll into the blades that way when you have to back up. your mower will have to have a bagger or mulching blades with the side covered. Throwing cut grass over the area you just rolled will loose it's look.

3" Schedual 40 PVC pipe filled with concrete with a 1/4" steel screw bar set in the center is a good way. 3" steel pipe thats 1/4" thick is also a good roller.

How to stripe your lawn with a push mower.?

Seth F

I know you can buy rollers for riders, is there such thing as a roller for a push mower. Or are there any other accesories out there to stripe your lawn with. Where can you buy them and how much do they cost? Thank you very much!
I found out a ghetto way to stripe your lawn. Tape two 5lb. weights on the back of your mower. I tried it today and the result was great. My lawn looks great, exactly what i want. Thanks for all the Suggestions.

Answer
The roller is the key to a good striped lawn mowing in different directions alone will only achieve an inferior and temporary effect. the use of what we call no8 wire mentality ie make up a roller with say a round post and cut it to the width of your mower, find a way of attaching it to the rear and weigh it down. If it is really that important and not for a one time showoff effect then my personal philosophy would be buy the proper reel mower you can get push models on the net.Good luck

Can anyone recommend a cordless electric lawn mower? I am trying to spend less than $300.?

Jared N

Answer
I purchased an elecric lawn mower last year after a bit of online research. There are several things you will want to consider:

Cordless or with a cord: The cordless is less entangled but may be $100 more costly and may be a bit heavier. I went with the cord which I already had. If you don't you will need to purchase a good one (12 guage)to reach to the ends of your yard. The cord may cost $100.00

How wide do you need? A wider model 20" will be heavier than a more narrow model (18") but you may have to make fewer passes.

A bag? If you are going to get a bag for it then the best configuration is for it to be rear bagging. My lawnmower came with a mulching plug, a bag and can be configured for side discharge.

If you don't get a bag you might want to consider a mulching mower. It chops the grass up and leaves it on the lawn. I use mine to chop up leaves in the fall as well.

I want a pull start, rear propelled and gas mower that doesn't cost too much. Can any of you suggest any brands that you've have had good luck with??? If anyone know of any great on-line deals for mowers, I would like to know that too....

Answer
I have a Lawn Boy that's 10 years old, and still starts on the 2nd. pull. I don't know how much they cost today, but it was $259 new. Why buy on-line and pay shipping? Watch your local stores for sales, or the classified for used.
