Any way to make a lawn mower quieter?

I have a gas powered push lawn mower, and it is a bit noisy. It is a 4 horsepower Briggs & Stratton. Is there any way I could lower the noise that is produces when running? Thanks in advance!

Answer
You should be able to find an after market muffler at a small engine repair shop. I got one adapted from a Honda to fit my 5HP Briggs, big difference. The blade can also be noisy, especially the mulching blades. If you don't need the mulching effect, get the straightest blade with the the least amount of lift. Your repair shop should know what I'm talking about. RScott

Is a GM Sierra's tailgate strong enough to support the weight of a tractor lawn mower?

rascoe627

I need to take my new tractor lawn mower to have service at the end of summer. I do not have a trailer for it, and I was planning to use the back of my truck to carry the lawnmower to the dealership. Will the tailgate be strong enough to support the weight of the lawnmower without damaging it? If not, are there ramps for sell that will distribute the weight on the bed of the truck instead of the tailgate? Thanks!

Answer
the tailgates on all trucks made after 200 are made to be able to hold 500 before they hit the market most can do alot more you should be fine however consult your owners manual where it will state the tailgate tolerance

good luck

Is it possible to flush out diesel fuel in a gasoline lawn mower engine without buying a new lawn mower?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Answer
You should be able to tilt it to the side and pour out much of it. Or, use a small hose to siphon most of it out. then you can just fill it up with gas and start her up. It will most likely smoke like crazy until the diesel fuel is gone but it will be ok. I accidentally ran a half and half mixture in my car years ago without a problem.

What are you looking for when buying a lawn mower?

Im 14 years old and am looking to start a lawn mowing buisness this spring. Although, i have no idea what kind of lawn mower to get (push, ride on, etc.) as well as what brand to get. Also how much should i charge per lawn? Last thing, whatelse besides lawn mowing should i offer to clients?
thankyouu, all answers are appreciated.

Answer
A riding lawnmower will do larger yards faster, but you have to consider how to get it to your job site. If you live in a city and the lots are small, go with a push mower because you can get closer to fences and around trees. You might also want to offer trim hedges. You could consider doing evergreen trees shaping them, if you can find some to practice on.

How is it legal for the city to come on your property and take everything you own.?

Keith

I live in a small town in Kansas and the city came in and took everything that I owned and tossed it away like trash, I had 3 pickup trailers full of iron to take to scrap yard one was hooked up to my pickup, they took my push mowers, weed eaters, iron racks full of new metal, 2 tire racks full of new and used tires, pickup tool boxes with tools, my cutting torch and cart, rotor tillers, and riding lawn mowers, trash can cart, lawn and garden tools, log splitter, pull camper used for storage, tool shed, oilfield tools and pumps, fencing and poles, firewood, wood burning heater for my house, fuel tank, ladder for shop, row boat no motor on it and fishing gear, tail gate for my truck, if it was outside they took, plus wifes garden hose, and my kids bikes, an mini bike, took my fence down and drove in the yard with big trucks and tractors, 6 sheets of new 1/4 inch steel 2'by6',

Answer
This doesn't happen without notifying you.

I'm sure the town has warned you several times of a thing such as a blight ordinance, and that if you didn't clean it up, they would.

You would have had plenty of time to haul those trailers to the scrap yard to turn them. Among other things.

Push mower will not start!!?

best gas lawn mower 2012 image

Caiden

Okay, I bought a BRAND NEW in spring of 2012, right out of the box, push button start, push mower!
I used it plenty of times and have NOT had ANY problems with it.
Two weeks ago, on a wednesday, I put gas in it, filled it up, on my merry routine, and it would not start for the life of me!
So, the next day, I tried starting it AGAIN.. And again, it would NOT START!
I tried both the starter button and pulling it..
The NEXT DAY I try it again...and YET AGAIN it WILL NOT START!!!
..okay, I left it for the weekend hoping that maybe the gas would make its way to the engine..
On TUESDAY of the next week, I tried starting it and still NOTHING!!!
Now, I'm pissed! I let it sit in the garage for, now, another whole freaking week letting the gas settle and evaporate whatever the hell it's gotta do!

Today, I go outside, and try again!!!!
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

I took off the filter, cleaned it, try making the engine suck the gas in, I had it ALMOST start but it didn't turn over, I pulled the string to start it, it went VROOM dun-dun-dun---d-d-d-dundun-d-d-dun and it died!

Take note, last time I used it and it ran, I left no gas in it, the tank is so damn small I can hardly do my whole lawn and I have almost an acre. But this always happens..

So, I don't have a primer button, I put new oil in it, new gas, cleaned the filter, charged the batter...
Still won't start..

...I'm so glad I'm a patient man or I swear to god,
I would @#$%^$# DRAG this mower to the dump!

Anyway, what do you think?
Thanks for any advice!
Much appreciated!

Answer
First of all, avoid the temptation to throw it out and calm down although I know it's frustrating.. Is the mower under warranty? I'd have the dealer repair it if so.

If not...I would pull the spark plug and see if it's getting spark....remove the plug, reattach the plug wire to the plug tip, hold the plug threaded base or electrode to the metal of the engine using an insulated pliers and crank over the engine. If the plug has a bright bluish spark at the electrode, then the ignition is working OK. If no spark, you have ignition problems which a shop would have to look at. I doubt the spark plug would be too worn or need to be regapped but you may want to install a new plug.

The next step is to try starting the engine with a little carb cleaner sprayed into the carb throat (remove air filter if there is one)...or pour a teaspoon of gas into the plug hole and reinstall the plug....then try starting. If the engine starts and dies...repeat putting a little gas in the plug hole and restart until it stays running. May take a few tries. Or keep spraying a little carb cleaner spray into the carb throat and restart until the engine runs by itself. Replace air filter after you get the engine running. Sometimes the small passages in the carb can get gummed up from old gas which needs to be purged out and flushed by running the engine with fresh gas. Best to use products like Stabil or Seafoam in every tank of gas to keep any gas in the carb from gumming up over time....especially when storing in the off season. Parts stores carry carb cleaner spray and Stabil or Seafoam products.

Is there a kill switch for the engine which shuts down the engine if a handle is released? If there is , that could be a problem if the cable from the handle to the switch is out of adjustment or the switch itself. It sounds more like you have spark or carb problems...most likely from stale gas in the carb.

It's 2012 so why don't we have a 100+MPG Car?

uturn784

I would like for someone to explain to me why there is not a car that get's 100mpg.

You mean to tell me that in today's world of electronics and computers that they simply cannot build a vehicle that gets 100Mpg?? That's total Bull and you know it. If they can build stealth fighters and other complicated aircraft then how hard could it be to produce a simple car that gets very good gas mileage?

For example, you could have a very small gas generator which sends electricity to 4 electric wheel hub motors. The car may not be the fastest car but it would obviously work.

Answer
The technology DOES exist, but no one would buy a car that weighs 500 lbs, powered by a souped up lawn mower motor that can carry only one person.

You're only going to get so much go out of each gallon of gas.

The stories of 100 mpg carbs being destroyed are B.S.........

Is it possible to flush out diesel fuel in a gasoline lawn mower engine without buying a new lawn mower?

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Answer
Yes you can do it! You didn't say if it's a push or a rider, either way it's simple! If you have a push mower first remove the air filter, tip the mower over (with a bucket under to catch the diesel) getting as much out as possable. Some engine oil will run out that's why you removed the air filter to keep oil out of the element. Refill the tank with fresh gasoline. You may have to use a starting fluid (sparingly) to counteract the diesel in the carb, but it will start. run the tank dry and you should be over the crisis of diesel fuel. Oh don't forget to replace the clean air filter!

How often should I have my mower blades sharpened?

best lawn mower half acre on Earthwise 60236 Lawn Mower Review | Electric Lawn Mowers Plus
best lawn mower half acre image

aquanut

I recently purchased a new zero-turn mower and I was interested in knowing how often I should have my blades sharpened if I am going to be mowing multiple residences all summer long. Probably around 30 yards every 2 weeks or so for about 4 months.

Answer
You need to sharpen the blade ( or blades if you have more than one on the cutting deck) about every 15 times you cut a half acre. So if you were cutting 7.5 acres you should sharpen the blade every time you cut the lawn (since there are 15 half acres in 7.5 acres). This will speed up the rate you cut and reduce the amount of gas you use because you will cut faster and it will require less energy to cut the lawn.

Probably the best reason for sharpening that frequently is a dull blade will result in the grass drying out quicker and therefor a browning lawn. A sharp blade helps keep the lawn green and even.

I recommend having at least one or two extra blades so while you are using the blade on the mower the other blade can be sharpened at your leisure and installed readily when you are ready to change the blade.

Of course if you hit some large objects such as small rocks or sticks you may need to change the blade sooner than that.

How to clear out overgrown areas?

ashleyb1

My mother's backyard is VERY overgrown in some areas. There's also a pretty messed up koi pond in the backyard that I'm gonna have to trash. Anyway, all I have is a mower, a weed wacker, and my own hands to clean up the overgrown areas. Any tips? She's also giving me a budget to redo the backyard. Which is about half an acre. We live in New England so our weather's a bit unpredictable. Would it be worth it to put a new koi pond in? Also, could anybody help me with some ideas for the backyard redo? Thanks in advance!! :)

Answer
When I built my new house, I had to clear a lot of land. I had to rent a backhoe tractor to level some dirt piles. I then smoothed out some rough areas so I would be able to mow it when it was used as a lawn. Before I could mow the wooded, weedy areas, I had to clear it with a rake, sometimes a bit of shoveling, and a heavy-duty rototiller came in handy. There were rocks of all sizes strewn about. I hauled load after load of rocks in a wheelbarrow, out back where I had a giant rock pile hidden behind some trees. All this took intense labor over a year or so. Looks pretty good now. When you are all done with your clean up, you can decide if you wanna go to all the work of installing a fish pond. Remember, it requires more work to maintain a fish pond. In the meantime, you can get a copy of New Englander Robert Frost's book of poetry. He wrote a lot about such challenging projects.

My grandfather is a Snapper fan for as long as I can remember. He bought a blue lawnmower about a year ago that turned on a dime. After 1 summer he decided to get rid of it. He said it wasn't as pretty of a cut as the Snapper. He said it bounces to much.

How much is a snapper riding lawn mower made in 2002 worth?

I don't know the name of it. It's just a riding lawn mower...not zero turn or anything special. It has been used for less than 50 hours.

Answer
I have a blue book for lawn equipment, but I need much more information. I either need the model number or size of the engine, size of the deck, type of engine, and so forth to accurately give you a price. I have values from $230 to $1300 for Snapper in 2002.

Toro lawn mower engine will not start, 08/07/2013?

I have the following Toro lawn mower. The lawn mower engine showed a continuous decline in running time. Five weeks ago, the lawn mower continued to run in perfect order. As time passed by, the engine would not run as long. The engine would run, but die after a certain time. The engine running time continued to decrease as time passed by. Now, the engine will not start.

Toro 6.5 horsepower GTS lawn mower
Toro model number 20017
Toro serial number 240121813

Tecumseh Power Company
engine model number: LV195EA
spec: 362003B
engine family: 4TPXS.1951BC

Round one: We replaced the spark plug and air filter. The engine would run for one or two seconds.

Round two: We removed and cleaned the small metal bowl attached to the carburetor with carburetor cleaner. We removed and cleaned the main jet by using a small wire. We filled the fuel tank with one-week old 87 octane unleaded fuel. The engine would run for one or two seconds.

We drained the fuel tank and filled the tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel. The engine continue to run! Hurray! We pulled the starter cord an hour later and the engine continue to run! Hurray! Two successful tests made me very happy.

When I transported the lawn mower from my friend's home to my home, I pulled the starter cord. The engine failed to start! The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

I wanted to try starting the engine the next day.

Round three: The next day, I pulled the starter cord and the engine would not start. The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

We cleaned the fuel tank with carburetor cleaner and the tiny mesh screen that serves as the fuel filter. We rinsed the fuel tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel twice and refilled the tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel.

We applied carburetor cleaner through the fuel line between the fuel tank and carburetor. We applied carburetor cleaner to the float in the small metal bowl. We did not fully disassemble the carburetor.

I pulled the starter cord and the engine would not start. The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

Round four: We removed the spark plug. We re-attached the spark plug cable to the spark plug and placed the spark plug near the engine block. While pulling the starter cord, we noticed an spark. That is good.

We sprayed starter fluid in the carburetor. After pulling the starter cord, the engine will not start.

We noticed the rubber hose between the fuel tank and carburetor had a crease! We replaced the original rubber hose and original clamps. The rubber hose is rated as a fuel hose. We pulled the starter cord and the engine started! Hurray!

We pulled the starter cord again and the engine started!

Round five: I pulled the starter cord the next day, but the engine speed increases and decreases. The increase and decrease of engine speed repeats. After a minute or two, the engine eventually stops. When I pull the starter cord again, the engine will not start.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you again for your help and guidance.

-Mark

Answer
It sounds like you may still have dirt or grit clogging the internal passages of the carb which block the flow of fuel periodically. If untreated gas was left in the fuel tank and carb float bowl for an extended period, it can also turn varnishy which can clog or gum up tiny fuel passages in the carb...requiring a thorough cleaning. Since the engine does start and run at times, it doesn't sound like an ignition problem unless it does have a periodic ignition issue...test for good spark each time it does not start to eliminate that as an issue...defective coil or igniter, bad plug wire, . Usually, if you have good spark, the engine should start by spraying some carb cleaner into the carb throat or pouring a little gas in the spark plug hole...if no start, you may have valve or timing problems if all other system are OK...choke is set right, etc.... The engine speed fluctuation also indicates possible fuel issues...clogged passages in the carb or the governor sticking.

At this point for round six, I would make sure you are getting good spark each time when starting and remove the carb float bowl and clean out any small passages and the fuel bowl nut with carb cleaner and a small pin or needle to dislodge any grit...you may have to remove, disassemble and clean the whole carb and install a new gasket/seal kit...or replace the carb. Do not spray carb cleaner into the fuel intake port (where the fuel hose attaches) or the float needle valve or seat as it can degrade them.....make sure the float is properly adjusted for the correct level and does not stick....a carb rebuild kit usually has a sheet with specs on float level. Gasoline sold with ethanol can degrade gaskets and seals over time which can crumble into bits and clog internal carb passages....try to buy gas that has no ethanol added or use Seafoam additive to offset ethanol issues. Always add products like Stabil or Seafoam to the fuel tank to preserve gas when stored. And finally, if the mower blade hit some hard object like a rock or tree root, etc.., it could have snapped or damaged the crank/flywheel key which can make the engine out of time and cause issues with hard starting.

Related info on no start issues...
"If the small engine does not start, the carburetor might be clogged or have bad fuel in the float bowl. If old fuel was left in the small engine for a long time some of the volatile ingredients may have evaporated, leaving a thicker, stickier product that is more like varnish or shellac. This sticky fuel can clog up the small jets and ports in the carburetor and it can be difficult to burn making it hard to start the engine. The only solution is to drain the old fuel from the float bowl and thoroughly clean the carburetor with carburetor cleaner. If that isn't effective, replace the entire carburetor."

Why does my new Toro lawn mower idle up and down?

I just bought a new Toro lawn mower (recycler type) from Home Depot last year in June. It ran great all last year but this year after changing the oil, adding fresh fuel and starting it up it spits and idles up and down.

Answer
If you added fresh fuel it sounds like you may not have properly stored your mower for the winter season. If so you may have to remove all the fuel and then remove the carburetor, disassemble it and clean it.You can first try adding a product like Sea Foam or something similar to fresh fuel and let it run. My Lawn Boy mower barely fills the bag before I need to stop and empty, any suggestions?

I bought a Lawn Boy 20" push mower from Home Depot last year to replace my old one finally died. This mower is terrible. My main problem is that, unless the grass barely needs to be cut, the clipping exhaust port clogs up and the thing starts dropping most all clippings with an almost empty bag. The bag has never made it more than about half full. Is there anything I can do to improve this (new blade?) or is it just a crappy mower?

Answer
Make sure the blade was installed right side up for one if the mower is new. I would bet that this is the problem.

ok i didn't know that lawn mowers took oil. now i can't get the thing to start, i found the oil thing and put oil in it. so what do i do with it now? how do i fix it?

Answer
Turn it upside sown and try to turn the blade. If it will turn, the motor has not seized. Did it make a bad noise before it stopped working? If it did, you likely threw the rod and it will not work. Some mowers will shut down by themselves if they are low on oil before any damage is done. Once somebody gave me a mower that she said would not work. I took it home and took out the spark plug to check it. Oil began to run out of the hole. The entire engine was full of oil. That is why it would not run. Make sure that you have the oil to the correct level. Not too much, not too little.
You may be able to fix it.
I had a truck once. The oil plug fell out and I drove it without oil. The engine seized. I filled the case with "marvel Mystery oil" I let it set for a day, then began to turn the motor with a gigantic wrench. It broke free. I gave it a few more rotations and charged the battery. After that it started right up. I changed the oil and it has been running well ever since.

A Friend

Can you recommend a brand and model of a riding lawn mower that is safe, dependable and has a smooth ride. We have a large yard (2 acres) and my husband has had a back injury.

We have a tractor but need a riding lawn mower to cut grass around the house. Which tractor will hold up with heavy use and be comfortable to operate.

Answer
According to the first link below, the John Deere X304 is the best lawn tractor overall.

Second link is price...seems pretty typical though this particular model isn't at Lowe's. Didn't look at Home Depot.

We got an old, second hand Craftsman from a customer. That rider was used on MANY big lawns while hubby had his lawn maintenance business. It was used for 5-6 years before it quit. I wish it was still working!

Speaking only for myself, I'd look into a Craftsman. I'm not fond of Sears, but I loved riding it and miss her sorely as we now have 3 acres!

Any suggestions for a lawn mower(s) for 3-4 acres to mow?

nc1kcfan

My husband and I are looking into buying a lawn mower/tractor to mow about 3 - 4 acres. We are thinking about either a JD 2210 or JD 4115. Does anyone have a suggestion of any others, especially of lesser cost, but the same quality for the amount of mowing to be done? Also, suggestions on which size of deck and the amount of time it would take to mow this amount would be great. We have a Torro with a 54" deck now, but we are sharing it with my father-in-law and it is becoming a hassle to take back and worth every week or so. Plus, we have to get the bushhog to use too. We use the Torro for yard (about 1.5 acres) and the bushhog for the other acres. That's why we need one that would be great to do it all! ~thanks

Answer
I'd Look at exmark or grasshopper's..., any 42 inch with a hydro riding mower will do 1.5 acres easy though... I'd also think about simplicity/snapper mowers as well. Simplicity owns snapper.

No, no, we are not talking about the Holocene. I've whipped that dead horse enough.

Today I am talking about taxes, which artificially raise the price of fuels. Europe has paid artificially high prices for fuels for decades now. The thought process, I'm told, is that this will spur innovation, in alternative fuels. And spur inventions to save fuel as well.

So what do we have for innovations? We have hybrid electric cars, which still rely on dead dinosaurs. Electric cars, which have less range than comfortable hiking boots. And you still have to plug that sucker into a wall, and recharge it with a dead dinosaur.

And I'll be honest here. I can't afford to drop $30k on an electric go-cart. And I couldn't fit or haul my trade around in it anyway. And your little electric go cart, is only marginally better than a Mini Cooper, mileage wise.

Nuclear energy, Japan, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and a few others has demonstrated the short term dangers there. And the disposal of spent fuel cells is the real time bomb with nuclear energy. Co2 is a trifle compared to a spent fuel rod, with a halflife of 500,000 years or so.

Windmills are expensive, high maintenance, and not too terribly reliable. Plus they slaughter endangered species, and have been blamed for beaching whales. High frequency resonance or something...

Solar energy suffers from the same problems as wind. If it were as great as you make it sound, then why are states building $500 billion dollar nuclear plants? Surely solar towers would be cheaper.

We have fuel injection. But that doesn't really save fuel, does it?

The only real innovation, has been to put people into rinky dink go-carts, powered by lawn mower engines. Which is full circle to where the auto began.

But why do some of you, and you know who you are, insist that higher fuel taxes will solve anything?
30 years of artificially high fuel prices. And the best anyone has come up with are go-carts with electric motors?

I'm just not seeing the trade off here...
I never implied the tax money was going towards innovation. That's as ridiculous as claiming cigarette taxes are funding cancer treatment.

Newsweek and the UK Telegraph at one time, ran stories about offshore wind farms driving whales to shore. Both stories have disappeared, replaced by vigorous disclaimers.

I suspect a cover up by Big Wind.

From what I've read lately, some of these new high efficiency internal combustion engines have some serious power too. If we're going to throw money at something, I think we should concentrate on making what we know works even better.

Continous or Discrete?

M24

Can you help me to figure out whether these are continuous or discrete variables?

1. The amount of gas left in a lawn mower tank is related to the amount of time the engine has been running.

2. A relationship exists between the speed of a runner going up a hill and the steepness of the hill.

3. The temperature during the day is related to time of day.

4. The amount you pay depends on how many sodas you buy.

Ohv=overhead valves operated by the cam from below
Ohc=overhead cam operating valves below it
Ultimately, horsepower is dependant on many other design factors. Sharpening varies dependant upon the cutter style, either rotary or reel-type. General rule of thumb is to simply re-edge the factory bevel-use a diamond file with slow, deliberate strokes, removing the least amt. of metal while providing a fresh cutting edge.

Good Luck!

What is the difference between propelled, electric and gas Lawn mower?

I am looking to purchase a lawn mower with a collector and have no clue what the differenc is in each of the 3 types that seem to be out there.

Answer
Self-Propelled means that there's a mechanism that helps the mower go forward when you push on the handle. It reduces the work you have to do in pushing that SOB all over your lawn...which is nice, but doesn't make it completely without effort, either.

Electric mowers can come in two flavors: Corded, and battery-operated. Legend says that the battery operated ones have come a long way. We had one 10 years ago, and you had to REALLY keep up on your lawn, or the battery-op mower just couldn't hack through the grass, especially in the early summer when it rains a lot and the grass goes insane. Corded ones have plenty of zip and power, you just have to make sure you don't run over the extension cord. We never had a collection bag on ours, so I don't know about that part of it. You also never have trouble starting one up, and you don't have to tinker with stupid stuff like spark plugs or small engine repair. Or gasoline, for that matter. They also tend to be lighter, weight-wise.

Gas lawn mowers are what most people have...these are small engines that run on gas, so you'll have to keep that around. Most of them have collection bags which will need to be emptied two or three times per mowing, even in a small yard like ours. They still require maintenance; my hubby isn't very handy (ok, he's a handyman's idiot), and I know nothing about small engines, so I have to take my mower to someone competent to have the blade sharpened and engine tuned and the whole thing lubed and such.

Ask your neighbors if they know anyone who does lawn mower maintenance and then ask the mower guy if he has mower recommendations. We took ours in and he said, "A Snapper? I never see those things in here!" We took that as a good sign. Hubby was dumb enough to mow wet grass and then not clean out the underside, so it solidified into a concrete mass and the blade wouldn't turn. Don't do that.

Consumer Reports seems to like the following mowers:

Gas-powered push models:
Lawn-Boy 10640
Cub Cadet 11A-18MC

Corded electric push models:
Black & Decker MM875

Cordless electric push models:
Black & Decker CMM1200

Self-Propelled Models:
Toro Recycler 20333
Toro Recycler 20332
Toro Recycler 20330
Craftsman 37435
Lawn-Boy 10641
Craftsman 37624

Good luck!!

I can't get the flywheeloff my Craftsman lawn tractor. Does anyoine know how to do this?

suzie B

Craftsman 21hp electric start 42" mower, 6 speed transaxle lawn tractor model number 917.271832 LT1000. I can't stop the flywheel spinning so can't get the bolt off to remove it. A screwdriver doesn't stop it moving.

Answer
Try using a pipe wrench on the bottom end (output shaft)of the motor.... or at least engage all of the drives..... such as mower blades, transmission etc..... and make sure the retainer bolt is not left handed threads.... sometimes it takes two people to get it off.... have fun.......

How do I change the belt of my riding lawn mower?

I have a Bolens riding lawn mower and the belt snapped. We have a replacement belt, but can't find my owners manual - I need to know where/how to tighten it? Anybody please?
I have accessed the company's website to get a manual download, however they do for whatever reason do not recognize the serial and model number on the riding mower... I am not sure why - as I have tried it with dots, slashes, hyphens and spaces [the only thing missing are the bells and whistles] and still no results...

I am sure eventually I'll figure it out - or take to the next repair place - it's simply that I would have liked to get the grass cut this weekend...

Answer
well, it should have a spring loaded belt tentioner. look around at all of the pullys that it goes on to, check if any of them move around. the belt may actualy be loose when the blade isnt engaged so try turning the lever and see if it tightens up some.

what is wrong with my riding lawn mower?

Bryce

okay so i have a yard machine riding lawn mower it is called a (luv) bug and it starts right up. but when i turn on the blades and start driving it sounds like it is running out of gas or its loosing rpm's or some thing like that. so i have changed the oil got a new spark plug got a new batterie got new air filter and i cleaned the carburator. does any one know whats wrong?
o and the model number is 13a4065-729 and the Serial number is 1d214i10052
and it has a briggs and stratton motor on it and the Model number is 121607 0324 e1.

Answer
It is loosing power when under load. Usually this is a throttle governor issue but can also be debris in the cutting area when you put it in the cut mode the debris loads the engine. Remove the spark plugs and then raise the mower so you can inspect the blades and remove the debris. If this does not solve the problem take it to the local service center for a tune up. While you are there purchase a service and maintenance manual for the unit.

why does my huskee lawn mower leave streaks in the yard??

My 48'' lawn mower streaks the yard when i mow. I have changed the blades and they are good. Lawn mower repairman says the deck is not warped. Any idea?

Answer
Joe may have it here. Check the wheels height adjustment and make sure they are all the same from front to back and side to side. It is not much adjustment there but it will leave the streaks like you described if not exactly even. Another thought. Do you always mow the lawn the same way? If so, try mowing it a completely different pattern the next few times and see if this helps.

How do I know if a lawn mower has a vertical or horizontal drive shaft?

Alex

I need a lawn mower with a horizontal shaft. I know most lawn mowers are vertical but I also know there is horizontal ones. So can anyone tell me the ways I can tell if it's horizontal or vertical(physical differences) thanks.

Answer
horizontal mowers usuall have gears or a chain driving a REEL. at the front of the mower..& a lot of self driven mowers are horizontal shaft...

Are husqvarna lawn tractors good on hilly terrain?

best lawn tractor hills on ... some of these amazing brands of lawn tractors (or riding lawn mowers
best lawn tractor hills image

Jeremy

I was thinking of buying one of there lawn tractors but i have kind of hilly terrain. I know some lawn tractors don't do as well on this type of land.

Answer
It is going to be less an issue of what brand and more what style of mower is going to work best for you. Steep hills call for a mower with a lower center of gravity and a wider stance. How steep are you talking? Also are you running up and down the hills or across? A floating deck is going to be better then a hanging deck to reduce scalping as you crest the hills. Additionally, the bigger the hills, the higher the risk of rollover, so investing in a mower with a seatbelt and ROPS (roll-over protection system) may be very well worth it.

Finally, you need to look at what type of transmission is on the equipment. A low price mower may be under-built to handle the demands you are putting it under. A commercial grade mower may cost more, but may save you a bundle in repairs and replacement in the future.

What is the functional difference in the 4 cyl and 6 cyl engine in the Toyota Tacoma?

Michael

Not sure which one I need. I would be pulling either a utility trailer with construction supply or a lawn tractor or pulling a 14 foot boat.

Answer
to add,
pulling a utill trailer at moderate to hwy speeds, you would definitely want the V6. the I4 will do what the V6 does at lower speeds due to different gearing. but it cannot develop the torque needed to do the work at moderate to hwy speeds.
in that case, there is some truth to "no replacement for displacement".
also, if you're pulling say your boat on vacation at hwy speeds and going up hills, get it with a manual trans. the V6 can be a little lacking under those conditions as well and the auto trans will kick down a lot. the manual trans will fair better in the long run.
