Craftsman Lawn Tractor Manual?

John

This question is for my dad not me , but the question is , where can i download or atleast view a manual for our "Craftsman Lawn Tractor , 18.0 HP,42" Mower,Electric Start,6 Speed Transaxle" Model # 917.273392 . And please dont tell me to go to craftsman's website cause i'v tried that, and dont say "google it" im looking for a link please, the help would be verry much apreciated so i dont have to order a new one and pay 10 or 15$ .peace

Answer
I have my 25 HP manual and all I see on the back is www.sears.com or a number 1-800-4-My-Home

When you go to www.sears.com look on that page for "parts"
Hit parts and it will take you so you can search with you model number. Get the model number off your tractor.

can you put a 38' deck on a craftsman lawn tractor that had a 42' deck originally?

Nan A

Answer
It likely depends on the model number as I know they have changed the mounting locations for the mower decks at least twice. The bigger problem I think is that you would be mowing inside the wheelbase of the tractor so you would not be able to get close to anthing for an edge cut.

How much is a antique craftsman push mower worth?

laura love

It's one of the ones with those blades that spin when you push it

Answer
No real market for this kind of thing, unless it was pre 1920, someone might give 20 bucks for it because all they want it for is a lawn ornament to put next to the steel milk cans. Collectors sometimes lay out some decent money for the ones that were converted to power mowers by industrious homeowners who had a subscription to Popular Science back then, but it's hit and miss because the creativity of the individual conversion is what drives the price there.

Garden Tractor Advice?

Q. Just wondering if anyone has any input... we're moving soon to a small hobby farm, where we'll be keeping a couple of horses. I've started research what sort of tractor will best suit my needs. I'm pretty sure I'll require a garden tractor in the 24-28 HP range, but I want to be sure.

Primary uses for this equipment will be A) mowing (this will be by far the biggest usage), B) pulling an arena drag or cart with materials, and C) Moving small to moderate amounts of snow. Total acreage on the farm is nearly 15 acres, but much of that is covered with woods, pasture, outbuildings, etc. Total mowing area is probably going to be less than 5 acres.

The snow-moving requirement is the one that makes me think I'll need the most tractor I can get. This would be used to move snow up to 6 inches deep, anything beyond that I would be calling a plow. A friend has told me that he doesn't think a riding tractor will really be useful at moving snow, although I'm not sure he grasps the difference in power and weight between lawn and garden tractors. If a large garden tractor ISN'T going to move snow, am I looking at more power than I need?

That being said, this tool WILL be a workhorse on the farm, as I truly can't see the need for an actual compact tractor (and don't want to incur that cost). I'd love to hear any feedback on this, feel free to make any equipment recommendations as well (I'm leaning towards Craftsman Pro and Husqvarna).

thanks a ton!

Answer
You are right about your friend not getting the difference. Your tractor should move snow just fine. You will need a snow blade with power angle or you will be trying to pull frozen bolts to change the angle - a real pain. I'd also suggest that you have a front end loader in case of a hundred year storm that dumps two or more feet of snow. If that happens you will not be able to find anyone that is not under contract in your area - plan on doing the job yourself (been there and done that).

As far as horsepower ratings, talk to your dealer but keep in mind that lower rated tractors will usually do the job, just more slowly. Proper technique helps quite a bit.

Finally, consider adding a plow to your 4x4 pickup. Its faster than a tractor and a damn site warmer and easier to start in the winter. You can plow with the storm and thus handle higher snow falls. Once you're done you can work your neighbors and probably pay for the plow in a year or two.

I have a 95 Ford Bronco, 4x4, 302 V8 EFI, how hard would it be to put a 99 or 2000 V8 Triton engine in it.?

Q.

Answer
You are aware of the Tritons' problems with spitting out spark plugs. . .right? I wouldn't put one in a lawn tractor. Just sayin'

Fast Lawn Mower question?

How much would it cost to change a hydrostatic transmission to a transmission with a clutch and gear shift? I have a 16HP Briggs and Stratton Twined Engine 656cc Ford. I have to get a new pulley and I want it to be fast so what kind of pulley should I get.

Answer
Take it to the nearest engine specialist in Briggs and Stratton and ask them to convert it you. I'm guessing that there will be other things you will need to modify to compensate for a faster mower. http://www.gardensandlandscapes.co.uk

vacumm engine for a lawn mower.?

OK so i took apart an old vacumm cleaner (well its like 4 years old) and i have the motor with the fan still attached to it. It has the power cable still attached also so i can plug it straight into an outlet.

What i want to do is turn it into a lawn mower, now i know this might sound a little ambitious but hear me out.

If i tremove the fan, a blade could be attached to the shaft and would spin when i plug it in. all i would need then is a frame to hold the assymbly a couple wheels to push it on a handle and some type of guard to make sure if the blade flys of i dont die. lol

anyways does this sound probable? if so any ideas on mounting it to a frame, frame shape and materials, or anything else lol?

Answer
Although what you suggest is certainly feasible, it is a lot of effort for producing a roto-scythe, and then you,ve got to think up a grass box system.... In UK we can go to car-boot or garage sales and pick up all sorts of grass cutters for a song so I would not follow your path in this.. Flymo have put 40yrs of development into their grass cutters. ( I picked up a sophisticated one, from a car-boot sale for £20.. New price was £100 +.... It didn't cut as some plonker had put the blade on upside down !) I've just done my 1st cut of it's second season !! [ About 60pence a cut up to now for two lawns ! x 20 cuts]

average lawn mowing rate?

mnikw

I live in Indiana and want to mow some yards around the neighborhood but don't know how much to charge....I will be using my own mower and gas. What is the starting rate for a small or a large yard? What do others pay or get paid?
Thanks,

Answer
Get what the market will bear.I charge the following.

1) small $30.00
2) medium $40.00
3) Large $60.00 to $75.00

I'm in the bizz and do get a little more than the others but it's my loyality and dedication that gets me that.I do have self propelled mowers and riders.

If your just doing this for a weekly part time income 1) $25.00 2) $30.00 3) Maybe $40.00.Don't give your work away,a tidy profit helps.

Good Luck

Suggestions on a good lawn mower?

Kristen L

Hello, I need to buy a lawn mower for my yard. My yard is under an acre but is sloped in the front and has a slight hill in the back yard area. Most of the yard is grass and not tree, so there is a substantial amount of grass to mow. We now have a service that does it for us, but to cut costs and get exercise I am now looking for a new mower. my question is..what are the best brands of mowers that I can get affordably? I need one that is self propelled due to the hills and a side mulcher instead of a bagger would be helpful. I have looked into Lawnboy and craftsman and unsure of the quality. I would love to own a ride on mower however they are too pricey and my range is more like 350 and under. Also any tips if I try to find a used machine as far as what to look for? I have been looking at Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, and Walmart..unsure where it is best to buy one. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Toro Self Pace mower is the best thing out here in my opinion. My yard is about the same size as yours and I love it. It adjusts to what ever speed you want to walk, it is a mulcher, side discharge, and bagger all in one. Everyone sells them, If you have a Costco membership, they have it now.

Also when I do my yard it is equivelent to walking 3.5 miles... great exercise...

Riding lawn mower or atv with pull behind mower??? NorTrac tractors??

peace

I am trying to figure out which way to go. I have heard of people having an ATV/4 wheeler and getting a pull behind mower and tiller(self powered), also a snow plow. Are there ATV's with PTO's?? What size engine would you need to have. I have 3.5 hilly acres to take care of. Also considering a NorTrak tractor or a used kubota. I have been able to check out riding mowers but do not know about ATV's or small tractors. Any info would be appreciated.

Is it possible too recieve carbon monoxide poisoning whilst mowing your lawn?

Q. Its proven that emissions from lawnmowers do emit carbon monoxide but is it possible too get poisoned outdoors while mowing? i usually wear a mask while mowing but many many people dont,

Answer
Unless you're wearing a gas mask, it's not going to help with carbon monoxide. And yeah, I think you could get a mild reaction from that stuff. I mean especially if you're a gardner and do it all the time. Once a week mowing just your lawn, it is doubtful.

What are your symptoms?

Reports about those noxious fumes emitted from gasoline lawn mowers are indeed true. A Swedish study conducted in 2001 concluded, âAir pollution from cutting grass for an hour with a gasoline powered lawn mower is about the same as that from a 100-mile automobile ride.â Meanwhile, the 54 million Americans mowing their lawns each weekend with gas-powered mowers may be contributing as much as five percent of the nationâs air pollution, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

lawn mowers?

Q. is there a push lawn mower that can be started like a riding lawn tractor?
and if so what brand?

Answer
There are many brands of walk behind lawnmowers that have elec starters. They are rather expesive. I think sears even has them in their catalog or online.
Try just stopping in your local lawnmower shop - just to start your search and put your hands on one. The big home improvement depots will not stock them or be able to answer your questions.

How long does a push lawnmower usually last?

Q.

Answer
A good quality push mower will last you a life time if you take care it it properly.
Change the oil and filters regularly etc etc.
Keep the blade sharpe so the motor doesn't have to work as hard.
Also something a lot of people forget about,
You need to clean the grass out from under the deck when you finish mowing, the damp grass clumped up under the deck will cause it to rust out in a couple of years

My Grandfather has an OOooold craftsman lawn mower that has a hand crank to start it, a handle that looks like bicycle handle bars and the front has these wicked looking teeth.
That sucker is older than I am (I'm 40) and it looks and runs just like new.

Need a new push mower: what to look for?

Joe

I need a new push mower. The old one (18+ years) is dead, but I don't know how to choose. I noticed everything is rated in torque now instead of hp. And to complicate things even further - I've seen engines with smaller cc's and more torque or vice verse! How the heck do I just find a solid mower with the power to cut dense grass. I don't need self propelled, which seems to be all they sell these days -- I just want a tough as nails push mower like my old Lawn Boy 7 h.p. that could cut and mulch grass like no tomorrow.

Answer
i cant help you make a choice really i know what you mean, especially with quality these days just not what it used to be .. i needed a push mower simply because i wanted an easy way to bag leaves and clippings for mulch and chicken nesting material and have a large field type yard that can get quite wooly so it couldnt be a weeny powered 'manicure' type mower .. i like quality stuff that appears it will last and have functionality so i considered wheel size, whether the deck and wheel mounting areas are all metal or 'plasticized' ect .. i didnt need self propelled but wasnt against the idea ... what i found was nothing i was satisfied with within a reasonable price range, what we are talking is for what i personally considered to look solid all around is in the 3-400$ range and even most of those looked to have weak links like part plastic in structural areas ... so ... finally after much frustration i just decided to concentrate on reviews of satisfied customers on bare bones cheap ones all i needed was a bagger .. i settled on a base model non self powered Yardman and it was pretty cheap .. its got plenty of go power, starts first or second lick every time now for going on 3 years of pretty much constant use .. ive changed the oil, bang out the air filter every few runs and pull the wheels and clean the holes and spindles and re-grease about once a season .. its been a real champ ..

this is the one i got but not from target, i forget where i ordered it from tell you the truth
http://www.target.com/p/Yard-Man-190cc-Briggs-and-Stratton-Gas-Powered-Side-Green/-/A-12235953?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=Google_PLA_df&LNM=|12235953&CPNG=patio%20garden&ci_sku=12235953&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=
the review on the page i totally disagree with, one thing you dont do with a mower is let gas sit in it for more than a couple of weeks is all i have to say on that one .. learn what fuel stabilizer is ya know .....

how fast can you cut a lawn with 2 push mowers?

Q. my brother and i are thinking about doing a lawn service this summer... he wants to but the big ride mower and go fast but they cost about 2000 $ and i dont want to spend that kind of money im thinking of a second push mower... how fast can you cut a yard with 2 push mowers.

Answer
I don't think you'll make the $2,000 or profit for that matter by mowing lawns... unless you do huge lawns and charge good money. It depends on the size of the yard. If you have 2 push mowers, you'll get good exercise and be able to mow an average size yard in 20 minutes. It all depends if you know what you're doing or not.

Good luck on making money!

Hand Push Lawn Mower - Should I buy one?

I hate mowing the lawn - hate it, hate it, hate it! A friend recently suggested that I should try a hand push lawn mower, to remind me of a simpler time and because it might actually do a better job on my lawn too.

Any hand lawn mowers out there available to give me some advice?

Answer
I personally prefer hand push lawn mowers to electric hover mowers. I feel more pride in my lawn once it's done, knowing that I've achieved that with what I'd consider simpler and more traditional tools. With that said, its not for those who are afraid of a little exercise as it can be hard work.

Ideally you want a mower with a 20" frame as it cuts down on the effort you have to put in and gives the best results on your lawn (in my experience).

Have a look at the Scotts 2000 model (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RA3E?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00004RA3E) - this one in particular has good quality parts, unlike cheaper models I've tried in the past, that will give you good results first time and will last as long as you do!

You'll also be saving money on electricity/gas, which is always a good thing.

Happy mowing!

Having Problems with Electric Lawn Mower?

Q. today i was using my electric lawn mower and it stopped working. I found out that when i try to turn it on, the control panel in my basement turns off power to the power outlet that the lawn mower is connected to. If anyone knows what is wrong please post, thanks!
It runs on a 10 amp current
I've plugged it into a lot of dfferent outlets and it keeps on tripping the circuit....any advice?

Answer
An electric mower can take a lot of current, both at the start-up surge and when you run into resistance while cutting the grass. This current surge could cause the breaker feeding the outlet to trip. Most outlet circuits are supplied with a 15 - 20 amp breaker. If anything else is plugged in and powered up on the same breaker, the mower could easily cause it to trip.

Try plugging the mower into another outlet in another part of the house. Or, unplug or turn off electrical loads that are connected to outlets that are powered by the same breaker (the things that get shut off when the breaker trips).

Info on a 1972 Crusader electric lawn mower?

alethia b

Ok I have searched everywhere I can think of to get some info on this lawn mower. I know that it is a Crusader model and the electric engine on it is a Westinghouse and at one time Heilig-Meyer sold them. As for the year model I am not positive it is a 1972. I had never seen or heard of this type of mower til I came across this one. Would like to be able to get a little bit more information about it. Any suggestions or personal knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What is the best riding mower?

Q. My dad and I have been mowing some lawns commercially on the side for the past 7 or 8 years. I have one job that is about 6" to 8" tall when we mow it and it is not like city grass, it's like grass that grows in the country. It is about 5 or 6 acres of that with little trees that try to grow in the grass. That yard takes about 5 or 6 hours of mowing each time. The rest of my yards are in town and a lot smaller. For the jobs I have right now I have been using a 2007 Cub Cadet Tractor mower, 24 horsepower, 50" cut that I bought this year and I works we'll but I bought it used and it already has some problems. I recently narrowed down my selection to a mower with 24+ hp and a 42" + cut zero turn mower under $3,500. It has to be durable and be able to do this job and not fall apart. I was looking at the 2013 Hustler Raptor (23 hp Kawasaki engine, 54" cut with a really strong deck and build for $2,899) and a Bad Boy MZ Magnum (27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and a 54" deck built also really strong for $3,499) I would much rather have more hp but I heard someone say that the Kawasaki motor runs so much better, but is it as powerful as the 27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor? Any suggestions on other ztr mowers and and answer to this question of which one would be better for my job(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer
That cub is a hard mower to beat. I think I would look and see how much to repair it first.

Two-stroke engines where fuel must be mixed with oil?

xoxo

I am doing a report for chemistry class.

Here is the article link:
http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-09-16/national/42103020_1_blowers-engine-air-pollution

I am writing about how two-stroke engines are environmental hazards. The article states that this type of engine lacks an "independent lubrication system," so "fuel has to be mixed with oil."
What does this mean? Does this worsen the environmental hazards, or affect the combustion?

Answer
Two stroke engines have some definite advantages. That is why they are popular. As a farmer and forest worker, I need to defend these engines.

In chain saws, they are smaller, lighter, simpler, faster, and more powerful than a four stroke for someone working in the bush with the chain saw in his/her hands.

They have no warm up time, so they are good for emergency water pumps, gen sets and the like, for fire departments. I keep a small two stroke generator at my work site, so I have portable electricity available. It is small, light, and easy to carry around.

Again, they have no warm up time for cold weather operation, in machines like snowmobiles.

These engines do need to have the oil mixed directly into the gasoline. I can remember back in the "old days", mixing ratios as much as 16:1. That is 16 parts gasoline to one part oil. Those engines smoked, and perhaps were a little bit polluting. They are always small engines, and therefore to not burn a lot of fuel/oil mix, as larger engines might.

The engines that were developed after that used mixes of, typically, 32:1. You might see a bit of smoke from the burning oil, but not much.

The newer engines run on mix ratios of 50:1, and as little as 100:1. In addition, the newer oils are much less polluting.

A lot of outboard engines now are four stroke, where the oil is in a separate sump, and there is virtually no oil consumption.

A lot of environmentalists get very excited when two stroke engines are mentioned. I think, as a regular user of such engines, that the issue is VERY exaggerated. These engines, although not perfect, have a lot of advantages over four stroke engines in certain applications. I would not suggest changing car engines to two stroke, the four stroke engines are more suitable. But, in certain applications, the two stroke is much more suitable.

The difference between the two engines:

In a four stroke engine, (car engine, or most lawn mowers, for example), the oil is in a sump in the bottom of the engine. The crankshaft splashes the oil around inside the engine, and there is usually an oil pump to circulate oil to moving parts like bearings. The oil does not go to the combustion chambers. There is essentially no oil consumption unless something is wrong.

In a two stoke engine (chain saw) the oil is mixed with the fuel. The oil goes through the lower part of the engine to lubricate bearings and moving parts, before it is transferred up into the combustion chamber. In this case, the oil is burned with the gasoline. The oil is consumed as you burn the gasoline in the engine.

The newer two stroke engines have a separate tank for oil and gasoline. The oil is "auto-mixed" in the carburetor, so that the oil/fuel mixture is constant, and correct. This has reduced pollution from these engines a lot.

The other issue is bio-degradable oils, that do not affect the environment nearly as much as the older types of oil did.

Unless the environmental activists can find another type of engine that does the same job and does not weigh any more, I will keep my two stroke chain saws. I would not want to double the weight of my chain saw, just because somebody who has never been in the bush says I am making a bit of smoke. I have to work with that machine all day.

By profession, I am a robotics technician (automated production equipment), and a licensed automotive and truck and coach technician. I was for a number of years an educator with a B.Ed. I am a licensed forestry technician, and a few other things too. I run a farm. Where do the environmentalists thing that their food, and the wood to build their houses, is going to come from ? I know about machinery. You use the machine that is most appropriate to do a job. In a car, a two stroke engine is not practical. In a chain saw, and some other applications, a two stroke engine is exactly what is needed. You use the most practical machine to do a particular job.

I hope that helps you a bit. There is a lot of information on the subject, and not just information produced by the environmentalists.

Write your story, but do it from both points of view. Above all, learn from it, and have fun while you do it.

If you have any questions, you can connect with me. Feel free.

What lawn mower should I get for under $300?

Jessica B

Hi there...I am thinking about getting a lawn mower, and have a small front and small back yard, not a whole lot of space. I want something good quality though, that will last. I do not want to spend over $300 though....recommendations?

Answer
Buy a used mower. You'll pay half or less of the original cost new. Go to the biggest general lawn and garden machine dealer in your area and kick the tires, and/or check out local ads, including Craigslist.
Once there, it should at least start. Maintenance or a tune up after that is pretty easy.

Can you start a riding lawn mower by going down a hill, then popping the clutch?

Q. if i cant get my mower to start, can i ride it down a hill with the clutch depressed, then release? will that start it?

Answer
I'm not aware of any riding mowers that have a clutch (like a car). But if by some small chance that you do have a clutch, yes provided the problem is in your starting system and not your fuel or ignition system. Generally though, the transmission gearing is so high that damage to the drive train could occur, you could take a tumble over the mower or the wheels will skid and not turn the engine over.

and the lawn mower would all of a sudden start dying on my almost as if it was being choked by long grass

( there wasn't any long grass to choke it)

and emitting huge white clouds of smoke from the muffler I believe

(I'm not sure if it is the muffler, its the thing on the side of the mower by the primer with the holes in it)

The lawn mower sat outside all winter last season with the same oil in it.
The lawn mower seems to mow just fine on level ground, its just when it is going up hill with the engine drive that it will start dying and emitting the smoke.

I have a full tank of gas.

Answer
Most 4-cycle engines are designed to function on up to a 11 to 14 percent grade. If your lawn is very hilly, your probably trying to run the mower at too steep an incline and oil is getting forced into the cylinder.

Perhaps you should get a 2 cycle mower, like a lawn boy. 2 cycle engines can operate at any angle, even upside down, without harm, or decrease in function.

Thanks
