what is the stupidest that you ever did?

sweetmicha

stupid things

Answer
Yesterday, I tried driving into my dad's driveway (which was covered in snow) only I completely missed and was driving in by way of the lawn. I got my truck stuck. As I Threw the truck into 4x4 to get out, I managed to drive into deeper and deeper snow and got stuck worse. By the time I was done, the truck was in 3 and a half feet of snow and completely immobilized. After 2 hours and my neighbor coming over in his John Deere we got it out. Except that I wrapped the chain around the frame AND axle and managed to bend that, and as we were pulling it out when the tractor stopped I hit the gas instead of the brake and managed to smack into the back of the tractor, smashing the front of my truck and the radiator. Total damage= $1800.00

shed ramp plans will this be good for a 12ft shed ramp with a 3-12 pitch?

John

i need to make a ramp for a shed i built the shed is prob less than 3ft according to what i found on the internet to have a lawn tractor with the belly deck the pitch should be 3in high for 1 foot in length so the ramp should be somewhere around 12 ft in length so my plan first the shed base has a 2x12 exposed i am mounting this ramp to, the plan is to screw a 2x4 on the 2x12 and level it than buy 3 4x4s maby 4 depending on what you say to this cut the 4x4s to length and on one side make the notch cut to sit on the 2x4 then screw the 4x4 down and do the same for the next 2 or 3 boards next i want the ramp to be 48in wide the doors are 72in wide but i don't see a reason to make the ramp 72in wide, i think the way im going to make the ramp is not buying a single sheet of plywood but to lay 2x6 horizontally with maby an inch gap in between boards for traction and rain will run off easier, what i am conserned is will i be better off useing 2 4x4s and in the middle have a 4x4 post out of the ground for suport or just use the 4x4s with no suports on a 12ft ramp witch would be more cost effectively.

Answer
DON'T notch your 4by4's get double joist hangers and nail on 2by12's adjust for height of 2by4's on ramp! GOOD LUCK!

Toro or John Deere walk-behind Lawn mower?

Hakuna Mat

Hi All,
I am looking in to buy a new lawn mower but need your help to decide which one I want. I live in a townhouse and my front and backyard are not that big, so a walk behind, non-self propelled, lawn mower is perfect for me. I am looking in to Torro Personal Pace Electric Start Walk Power Mower and a John Deere Model BG20493. (Self Propelled). They both have 6.75 hp, 190 cc B & G motor, and both are electric start.

Cons of Toro:
22" cutting width
Price. (30 dollar cheaper than JD)
Warranty (3 years vs 2 years JD)

Cons of JD:
Self Propelled.
JD Name.
Green Color. :)

Over all I am leaning towards Toro but I have no idea how good Toro Mowers are. Should I choose from these or should I go to Sears and buy a Craftsmen?? I will greatly appreciate your help on this one. Thank you all in advance.

Here are the links to the JD and Toro mowers.
JD:

Answer
Whichever you buy, do not get it from Home Depot or Lowe's. If you need service or parts, they will send you to a dealer, so skip the middle man.

You mentioned you didn't want a self-propelled, but yet you mentioned 2 self-propelled units. If you try the Personal Pace from Toro, you are going to love it. It requires a little pushing from you, but it does most of the work and will never "drag you along". I love my mower with Personal Pace.

One thing about the warranty for Toro is that it is a 3 year "Guaranteed to Start" warranty. If it doesn't start in the first of second try, Toro will fix it for free.

It was mentioned about a Sears mower, but you run into a problem when it comes to getting it serviced. You have to work on their schedule, and it could be weeks if you have to send it in.

As far as the high wheeled mower, do this simple test. Get a high wheel mower and a regular mower side by side. From behind push down to lift the front wheels like you would be turning the mower around. Compare the difference in the amount required to lift the wheels off the ground.

Ultimately the decision is yours, I wish you luck with this upcoming mowing season.

Toro Lawn Mower O-Ring?

James

I have a Toro GTS-2 that needs a new O-Ring for the carburetor. How do i know i am getting the right size. Do i need to find the model of the engine or can i just take the circumference of the bowl?

Answer
Any lawn mower repair shop will have these 'O' rings in stock. Take the old one with you just in case.
They are fairly ubiquitous, so you should have no problem getting one.

summer lawn care?

is it worth the money of getting a student loan to buy the needed equipment for two people mowing and trimming people's yards over the summer? how much should i charge? By the hour or yard? Is this sucessful idea or a potential disaster.

Answer
if you reallly want to do this i warn you it is not easy work! also do not buy riding lawn tractors! you will be better off buying one zero turn mower! charge by the yard if you are making payments, buying gas and trying to pay someones wages you will need to make at least 60.00 per hour! if your heart isnt in it you are looking at a potential disaster! the rest is up to you ive done it for years now. once you start getting customers and do good work for them, they begin telling their freinds and soon you will be swamped with work! ggod luck!

Which is the best Residental Zero turn Mower?

Tom Sawyer

I am considering buying a zero turn mower but only have $3200 to spend on it. What is the best name brand that I can get for this price. I like the Toro and the Cub Cadet, White Outdoor but I am not sure which ones are best. I cannot afford the scag, Hustler, or the gravely. John Deer I am not to sure about.
If any of you can give detailed Information on which one is best at this price I would greatly appreciate it thank you for your help.

Answer
i personally prefer the lawn tractor, but my area is rather large and uneven, so a ZTR is not all that practical for me.

I have given a few sites for you to look at and consider. John Deere is proprietorial (means you must generally use JD parts to repair it). I am pretty sure some of the others are like that also. I doubt Toro is like that and I tend to doubt that White is, but Cub would almost sure be. That is just something to consider when buying it. If you need a battery replaced on a JD, you have to get a JD battery. Some mower repair shops will not work on certain models because of that.

Go with what you like - but consider the sites I listed and their information. I would tend to go with Cub -- they have a very good reputation -- but read what others think...that is why you asked!

Hope you get one you really like.

i can turn it on and start mowing now, i couldn't mow before cause right when it touched the grass it died, the grass is only about 4 in high, k so i put oil in it, and now it starts to mow but the it starts spitting out white smoke, so i kill it cause i don't want it to blow up or anything lol, anyone know what could be wrong with it?? thanks
i dont think it had much oil in it before i put more in, my husband usually does this stuff but he is in iraq so i have to do it and i haven't the slightest clue what to do, thanks to all of you though for givign me ideas :) i appreciate it

Answer
Let's start by checking the oil.(sounds like it is overfull). Then check the connection on the seat switch. Raise the seat. there should be a wire connector that control mower deck if you get off machine. This is a safety that stops the mower in the event of a rollover or if you get off with the mower running. If you weigh under 100 pounds chances are you don't weigh enough to engage the switch.

How to get rid of the grass smell of a lawn mower?

tech-80

I recently got a riding lawn mower and our garage has started to smell like decomposing grass. I currently use a mulching plug. I just cleaned off all the grass on the bottom of the mowing deck and i think it helped. I just don't want to have to hand clean the deck every month.
Any tricks to help get rid of the smell and/or the grass?

Answer
The trick to get rid of the decomposing grass smell, is to get rid of the decomposing grass, hehehe.

A good sprayer will do the trick...one on a 'wand', so you don't have to bend over to clean out under the deck. The more pressure you can put out with the sprayer, the better. Then let the deck 'air dry' before you put it away in the garage.

Grass tends to stick more, when it's wet. So, another trick is to mow only when it's dry. Since grass has water in it, you don't want to wait too long between mowing either, especially when you're using a mulching blade/plug. A good rule of thumb to follow when mowing, for a healthy lawn, is to cut no more than 1/3 of the length of the grass off. I'd recommend 1/4 when using the mulching system. This lets your 'mulched' grass come out finer, and is more easily 'absorbed' back into the lawn as fertilizer. If your grass is 4 inches high, then cut only 1 inch off, etc. This means you'll be mowing more often, but you'll get a much better look, and a healthier lawn. If you cut too much off at once, the lawn can actually go into 'shock', and the grass will turn a bit brown, or 'tan' color along the edges of the grass blades. (means your lawn won't look as green).

How to Mow in the Wet Grass?

aaronrreag

OK, so I mow lawns for a job. I'm only seventeen, but I have 12 and every now and then it seems like I may have to mow in the wet grass. My mower will, Clog, Shut off, and Leave Skippers. One time I mowed this guys grass while he was on vacation. The one day it was a little wet. I didn't think it looked to bad when I left, but when he came back two days later he saw dead grass and so he raked it which revealed skippers. He was ticked!! What should I do? Are there certain mowers that will NOT leave skippers when it's wet? I think it put small ruts in the yard to.
Also, sometimes my mower will leave skippers even when the grass is dry. And I make sure my blades are sharpened every few weeks.

Are there some Pro lawn people that could help me out here? I have some more questions I think too. lol

Answer
The unfortunate thing is when you have to mow when it's wet. The best thing to do in that case, is to raise the deck at least 2 notches to keep the grass from clogging the mower. You may not be able to prevent skippers, but it may help.
If you are leaving skippers when it's dry, you may be mowing too fast and missing spots. Mowing too fast, especially if you are using a riding mower, will cause skippers.

Edit: It's all well and good to tell this young man not to mow when it's wet - that's common knowledge. However; in practicality that's pretty hard to do when you have a full book of clients that want their lawns mowed. It's not that easy to change days because of rain. Although it's not ideal, every lawn care company that mows, mows in the rain or when it's wet. Unless it's flooded.

pros and cons of an electric start lawn mower?

antiquegal

need to buy a new lawn mower, thinking of one with an electric start, good idea or not

Answer
It all depends on you. I'll list a few things to help you decide

Cons:
1.) Its another thing that can go wrong.
2.) You need to have an electrical plug near where you store the mower. (At least on the Toro and Lawnboy units)
3.) Risk of the gears involved in the starting going bad.
4.) Over time the battery will fail, and it is expensive to be replaced.

Pros:
1). No string to pull!
2.) There is a recoil start as a back-up.
3.) No throwing out your back to start.
4.) Prime, turn the key and go!

The battery should last for at least 5 years or more. On the Toro and LawnBoy units, you plug it into the wall once a month, overnight. They do not charge themselves.

My personal recommendation would be the Toro 20074 Recycler w/ Personal Pace and Electric start. You can find your nearest Toro dealer by using the dealer locator on http://www.toro.com or they have this unit at Home Depot for $399. It has a 2 year Guaranteed to Start warranty with it.

lawn mowers?

THERESA LE

I cant decide which mower to purchase. I want to know rear wheel vs. front wheel, and how good are personal pace mowers. Im considering a toro.

Answer
Since you are considering a self propelled mower, I have found that stopping a rear wheel drive requires disengaging the drive wheels (may be as simple as releasing a lever, but still an active motion) while stopping a front wheel drive is as simple as lifting the front wheels off the ground (pushing down on the handle raises the wheels, the same action you use to turn the mower), the wheels still turn but don't pull the mower.
Unless you are interested in demonstrating your physical prowess, the self propelled mower makes the job a lot easier, especially in the tall weeds.
For features, consider a rear bagger unit which can bag the clippings, or bag left detached can mulch the clippings.
Also think about starting options -- look for an easy start (push a primer bulb 5 times and pull the starter cord) or an electric start (battery or 110v) which takes the muscle out of it.
Or if you have a small plot, consider the new cordless electrics which are lighter, no starting, and "green".

Bin There, It is helpful to read the question and who is posing it. I could be wrong, but I somehow don't believe that THERESA LE V will be begging her wife for a new one. . .

How can you make your own lawn roller/striper for push mower?

baseball5

Has anyone made this before and do you have any ideas or tips? I can only find information on the web for making it for a riding mower. Thanks

Answer
Here's some basic rules to follow when you make one. You want to make one that rolls not one that you drag behind. You'll end up dragging the cut grass. It will need enough weight to bend the grass. It will need to be as wide as your mower's blades. Attach the roller to your mower's arms at the lowest point just above the deck with metal or wood bars, not chains. It could roll into the blades that way when you have to back up. your mower will have to have a bagger or mulching blades with the side covered. Throwing cut grass over the area you just rolled will loose it's look.

3" Schedual 40 PVC pipe filled with concrete with a 1/4" steel screw bar set in the center is a good way. 3" steel pipe thats 1/4" thick is also a good roller.

It looks like it's just a roller you attach behind the mower. Try finding something like that.

First season with a 4-stroke lawn mower - winterize/storage?

Derek

Recently (mid-September) bought a new 4-stroke lawn mower and had cut the grass three times. Now, winter here in Canada is fast approaching, should the engine oil and gas been drained prior to storage in the backyard shed? Any other recommendation or advice are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
My lawn mowers usually last about 10 to 15 years, that's mowing every week for 7 to 9 months out of the year, and sometimes other people's lawns as well. What do I do for winter prep? Last mowing of the year, I empty the basket and push the thing into my shed. In the spring I sharpen or replace the blade, replace the spark plug, check the oil, and start mowing. I don't change the oil or put in any additives in the gas. I figure I could change the oil and such, but I average $20 a year for a new lawn mower. Why spend more. Never had a problem with one, until it just wears out after 10 to 15 years.

Help with new lawn?

Damski007

I have laid a new lawn that has been down a week now, I'm in sunny old england here so it has been raining on it for the hole five days. The grass is looking good and is looking healthy. When can I walk on it?, and if this rain ever stops when should I cut it foe the first time?. I have been given a hover mover, but is it better to cut the grass with a rotorey mower. All answers greatly recieved. 1 more Question, should I start to use any fertizer?.
I think I should of pointed out that it was turf that was laid.

Answer
Hi from Toronto, Ontario Canada. Most new sod is well rooted in 7 to 10 days, but avoid walking on the newly sodded lawn for at least 3 weeks or a month is better. If tender new roots are stressed while they are growing into the soil they will take longer to establish the new turf.
I would wait for at least 6 weeks before fertilizing. Do not use a fertilizer/pesticide combination. Use a slow release fertilizer. You could have used a starter fertilizer underneath the new sod. But not to worry. It will be fine. It's great you're getting the rain.
Wait as long as possible before mowing your newly sodded lawn for the first time. Mowing requires walking on the turf which can harm the new roots connecting it to the soil. It is a good idea to let the grass grow at least 3 inches tall; 4 is better.
For that first mowing take just a little off the top and come back 2 or 3 days later and take it down to two inches. Taking the time to cut the grass a little bit twice is less stressful on the new turf that coming on with one deep cut.
I hope I have been of some help. Good luck on your new lawn.

lawn mower problems?

carol k

i have riding lawn mower and starter kicks out and turns motor one turn then stops..i hooked starter to a charger and it will keep running fine so i dont think its the starter..what should i do next

Answer
If the battery test good and all of the connections are good 12 volt source, check the valves in both overhead valve or in block style valve. Meaning, an overhead valve has a head with valves in it that you can take off, push rods, and adjustable rocker arms ( the valves are not contained with in the block). You should also check them on a valve inblock style on some series and brands ( ex. if it is like a k series Kohler they have adjustable tappets in them that have a clearance that needs to be set). I forgot to mention this style of motor contain the valve in the engine block You can tell by the head just being flat and just having spark plug hole and no moving parts in it. If it is a valve in block style or overhead, and all other conditions are met valves set properly,no electrical problems. This could maybe have a compression release problem. There is a spring and a lift pin on the camshaft that releases compression from the piston chamber. It is on the cam shaft and through cintrifigal force allows weights through turning rpm to move a pin and in turn allow the valve to go to the open position allowing compression to leak down and not dead head while starting so it can be turned over easier. After the engine starts the weights fall back in and the release is no longer holding the valve open and the valve tran operates normally. Usually if you put a charger on it will start fine. With this problem the starter has unlimited amperage ( whatever the charger is usually 300-600 amps if it a big one) to turn that motor over. Most mower batterys will carry a lot less cold cranking amps. Just remember that testing your cables can be tricky checking them with an ohm meter is a bad reading because if just one strand of the cable is touching you will get a good reading. Check the draw of the starter with an inductive pickup to see how many amps it is pulling if it is pulling just a few it is cable and connections or starter prob. If it is pulling a lot could be starter problems or it could be a compression problem because the starter is having to work double time to try and turn that motor since the cylinder is building up full compression. I have had the compression release in many cases cause a customer to buy a new starter, cables, and switch when he didn't need em. He put it on and it didn't make a difference. I am into diagnosing not spendin money. Hope I helped you diagnose it and I explained it so you could understand p.s Just dont want you to spend money on something you dont' need!

Basically, what they are trying to tell you here, that if you are in the business of renting out equipment and other personal property (e.g. construction equipment, lawn mowers, steam cleaners, pick axes, or whatever) you have to collect the state use tax, which is equal to the state sales tax, and remit it to the state.

How to make $500 into $600 or more in months?

iciegirl

I have around $500 with me and would like to increase it more to maybe $100 in 1 or 2 months time. What should I do? I'm currently unemployed to take care of family.

Answer
Mowing lawns is a good option, you could buy an old lawn mower for under 100 dollars. Mow about 4 lawns per day at around 25 dollars. You make 100 dollars per day, and if you work three days a week. You are making 300 dollars per week, part time. Therefore you make 1,200 in a months time.

You could wash cars, you could charge 20 dollars to wash a car. You should be able to do about 4 cars in two hours. Charge around 20 dollars and you make around 80 dollars per day. If you want to make more money you could detail cars, you make around 125 dollars on average for detailing cars. But it require more work to do, if you choose this route. The best product to get is optimum no rinse and go on the forum called autopia and autogeek.

Next start an office cleaning or window cleaning business, you can get all of the equipment for under 100 dollars.

ethanol gasoline will it hurt my lawn mower?

curious ge

I have a fairly new Sears (Craftsman) mower.
Are there additives to correct problems caused by 10% ethanol mixtures?

Answer
Standard 10% ethanol gasoline (the type you purchase at the pump) will NOT hurt your lawn mower. (Applys to both 2 stroke and 4 stroke motors.)

Manufacturers of small engines realize that up to a 10% blend of ethanol is very common in gasoline, so they make their engines compatible with this fuel.

Many gas stations such as Race Trac, QT, along with many others have been selling us, the public 10% ethanol gasoline mix for decades. The only difference in straight gasoline and gasoline mixed with ethanol is that they burn at a slightly higher temperature . But, today's engines are all designed to run at hotter tempertures than what they are rated for. In fact, ethanol fuel provides a slight increase in power when compared to power generated from straight gasoline.

You can ask a Sears service center near you if it's okay or not, if it makes you feel better, but I've been burning ethanol mix in my Craftsman mowers for years.

As far as Sears voiding your mowers warranty if you use ethanol fuel, it will not.

As far as burning Super unleaded in your mower, this, in comparison would be far more damaging then an ethanol fuel would be. Even though running a higher octane premium fuel through your lawnmower wouldn't hurt it, it would still run at a higher temperture then it would if it was burning a 10% ethanol unleaded gasoline. Very few lawnmowers are designed to take a premium fuel, so I'd save your extra pennies and opt for the regular fuel.

Note: My comments DO NOT refer to the new fuel, recently being pushed by our Congress, E85. The E85 fuel is a specially designed fuel mixture to help us (U.S.), become less dependent on foreign crude oil. The auto manufactures are receiving large government grants in order to produce, what's known as, "FFV" (Flexible Fuel Vehicles). These are vehicles that are designed to run on a fuel mixture made up of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. The use of E85 fuel alternative in a non-FFV will void all manufacturer's warranties and cause permanent damage to your engine, large and small.

Take care and happy mowing.

42 inch. It was used by an older man for like a to years and then it has been sitting in a shed for the last 2 years but runs fine. I tested it today. They are asking for $600 and I would like to find out if this is an OK, Good, or Awesome price for this mower.

THANKS!!

Answer
That mower brand new today is going for 1,000 dollars because they have it marked down 250 dollars right now.
So I would offer half price at 500. It could be worth the 600 if it only has a few hours on it.

Troy Built Lawn Mower?

Cae

My husband has a 2000 Troy Built Lawn Mower and is looking for a bagger for it. He has went to the website, but no luck. He is hoping to get a bagger number. Anyway, the Model # is 13AQ609G063, if anyone knows where to find one or can specifically help. Thanks!

Answer
Most baggers are universal anyway- any home improvement store would carry them. Be prepared to spend around $300-500 for one tho.
It shouldnt be difficult to hook up either, a frame bolts to the back of the tractor chassis, the bagger hood and bags hang from this , while the shute hooks to the deck with a small bungee cord, somtimes this lil tab attached to the deck might need to be welded or screwed on- depends on the kit.

How many HP do you guys suggest for a riding mower to cut a 1/2 acre of lawn, the yard has alot of rolling hills with a few fairly steep climbs.I was thinking Husqvarna, what do you think?

Answer
Husqvarna makes the Craftsman mowers. MTD makes Cub, White, Troy-Built, Yard man, Yard Machines, Bolens, and the new Toro tractors. The John Deeres in Lowes and Home Depot are made to last 250 hours and be tossed. That is all the "discount" brands.

If you are looking for a mower go to a dealer, even if its John Deere. The dealer can service the machine after the sale. Most will even deliver for free. They know the machines and the feature that will work for your conditions and situation in your yard. You are going to talk to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about, and not someone who will be in paint tomorrow.

I would recommend a Snapper of a Simplicity. Simplicity has a mower called the Regent that is 18 HP with a 38" deck, and sells for $1999. You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

When adjusting the belt the bracket that you tighten to hold it in place does not hold well. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Answer
I am not sure what Snapper model you have. If you mean the one where you tighten the 5/16 bolt that goes through a circular clamp then sometimes you need to use a back up wrench on the backside of the bolt. I use a pry bar to adjust the frame to where I want it and then tighten it good. The hardend bolts work the best for this, through the clamp. I have a few of the older Snappers and they do loosen at times, I find that it is if I mow on the hills a lot and make a lot of turn on them.

What is the difference between propelled, electric and gas Lawn mower?

lilfinevin

I am looking to purchase a lawn mower with a collector and have no clue what the differenc is in each of the 3 types that seem to be out there.

Answer
Self-Propelled means that there's a mechanism that helps the mower go forward when you push on the handle. It reduces the work you have to do in pushing that SOB all over your lawn...which is nice, but doesn't make it completely without effort, either.

Electric mowers can come in two flavors: Corded, and battery-operated. Legend says that the battery operated ones have come a long way. We had one 10 years ago, and you had to REALLY keep up on your lawn, or the battery-op mower just couldn't hack through the grass, especially in the early summer when it rains a lot and the grass goes insane. Corded ones have plenty of zip and power, you just have to make sure you don't run over the extension cord. We never had a collection bag on ours, so I don't know about that part of it. You also never have trouble starting one up, and you don't have to tinker with stupid stuff like spark plugs or small engine repair. Or gasoline, for that matter. They also tend to be lighter, weight-wise.

Gas lawn mowers are what most people have...these are small engines that run on gas, so you'll have to keep that around. Most of them have collection bags which will need to be emptied two or three times per mowing, even in a small yard like ours. They still require maintenance; my hubby isn't very handy (ok, he's a handyman's idiot), and I know nothing about small engines, so I have to take my mower to someone competent to have the blade sharpened and engine tuned and the whole thing lubed and such.

Ask your neighbors if they know anyone who does lawn mower maintenance and then ask the mower guy if he has mower recommendations. We took ours in and he said, "A Snapper? I never see those things in here!" We took that as a good sign. Hubby was dumb enough to mow wet grass and then not clean out the underside, so it solidified into a concrete mass and the blade wouldn't turn. Don't do that.

Consumer Reports seems to like the following mowers:

Gas-powered push models:
Lawn-Boy 10640
Cub Cadet 11A-18MC

Corded electric push models:
Black & Decker MM875

Cordless electric push models:
Black & Decker CMM1200

Self-Propelled Models:
Toro Recycler 20333
Toro Recycler 20332
Toro Recycler 20330
Craftsman 37435
Lawn-Boy 10641
Craftsman 37624

Good luck!!

Compare Lawn Mower: Gas vs. Electric Cord vs. Battery?

Frank

I have 1000-1500 sq. ft. lawn. How to decide whether I should choose Gas powered or Corded Electric or Battery operated? I have no problem to get electric power through extension cord.

Answer
A 1000-1500 sq. ft. lawn is kinda small. If you have an outlet nearby, a corded electric mower would be the nicest to use.

Gas powered mowers have all sorts of problems - especially as they get old, the least of which is they require gasoline.

Battery powered mowers require battery maintenance and a charger.

A corded electric mower is the simplest - it never requires gas, or tune-ups. An electric mower has only one moving part, an armature which the blade is attached to.

You should be able to mow a 1500 sq ft lawn in less than 20 minutes, using less than 20 cents of electricity (from an outlet).

Help with buying a used lawn mower?

Can anyone provide some advice when looking for a used lawn mower ?

My current issues is both my mowers, are REALLY hard to start. Last year I could only get one to work, the year before the other one. But in every instance, it was a whole lot of pulling, like 10 minutes worth to get them started.

I have a small yard. Looking for a mulcher.

If I find a self propelled, is that something that's easy to deactivate ? Ive never used one and pushing my mower isn't as bad as the small spaces & turning & such.

Will big back wheels help or hurt ?

Found one on craigslist.

Troy-bilt push mower w/ Honda motor. Used for one summer.well maintained.

He wants $100.

Fair ?

Thanks for any & all help.

Answer
I know you said you are looking to buy a used one, and while $100 seems like a great deal, be cautious when you buy used machinery. While they are a bit more expensive, new mulching lawnmowers cost around $300-$500, which is pretty reasonable, they will come with a a warranty and will probably last you much longer.

And this way you can get it with the exact specifications YOU want instead of browsing through tons of different ones on craigslist.

You also mentioned that one of the problems you had was that it was hard to start. You might want to look into an electric starter as opposed to a manual one. They are roughly the same price and the ease to start them can make all the difference.

The benefits to having a self propelled lawnmower are that you don't have to push nearly as hard. You still have to push it though. It adds a lot of benefit on hilly areas and makes it a lot easier.

Lots of peopleI know have said that the Snapper mulcher works great, very reliable and is very reasonably priced.

I will put a couple links below for you to look at with all sorts of information on how to choose the right mower for your needs and a couple of different sites with reasonably priced mowers.

Good luck!

I have 2.5 acres....both gentle hills and a huge sloped area. Yard is rough in some areas. What is the best mower. I really like the John Deere zero turns, but I am afraid they will not handle the rough areas and slopes well.

Answer
i have a 1977 wheelhorse 10 hp riding mower. i bought it a couple of years ago because i owned one before. as far as i can tell you cannot hurt this mower. my suggestion would be to buy an older mower that still runs well. they are built much stronger than todays mowers and they are inexpensive. also if you are mechanically inclined you can repair most breakdowns yourself. no electronics, no computer. just basic mowers. and by the way, i also have 2 acres, some hilly, some rough. no problem for my wheelhorse.

Best self propelled Lawn mowers under $600.00?

fran/amy

I would like to get a self propelled lawn mower for a half acre lawn. I understand they can be obtained in the $200.00 range. I am fortunate enough to be splitting the cost with my brother so price is not the issue, quality and ease of cutting is my main concern. Brand suggestions and prices would be appreciated.

Answer
We have a Honda. I love it and I mow about 3 times a month. Easy for me as a woman to start, empty bag, fill gas tank, etc. I ran over a decorative iron bird and it sliced it in half! Oops! A loud bang, but it hasn't missed a beat. Obviously, I don't recommend mowing birds, metal or live!
I believe we purchased it at Home depot one year ago for $395.00.Great mower!

i want to build a go kart out of my lawn mower engine i just don't know how can someone tell me how to do it?

Q. i want to build it out of a push lawn mower and i want to keeop it under 200 dollars

Answer
The lawn mower engine is wrong. It has a vertical power shaft. It needs to be a horizontal power shaft. It would be to expensive to convert it to howizontal drive. It cannot be mounted on its side, either. Your best bet would be to look for a chain saw engine. They are easy to convert.

What are the origins of the lawn? Who invented it?

Q.

Answer
They are actually considered "gardens"

Before the invention of mowing machines in 1830, lawns were managed very differently. Lawns belonging to wealthy people were sometimes maintained by the labour-intensive methods of scything and shearingâin most cases, however, they were pasture land which was maintained through grazing by sheep or other livestock. Areas of grass grazed regularly by rabbits, horses or sheep over a long period often form a very low, tight sward similar to a modern lawn. This was the original meaning of the word "lawn", and the term can still be found in place-names. Some forest areas where extensive grazing is practiced still have these semi-natural lawns. For example, in the New Forest, England, such grazed areas are common and are known as lawns, for example Balmer Lawn.

Lawns became popular in Europe from the Middle Ages onward. The early lawns were not always distinguishable from pasture fields. It is thought that the associations with pasture and the biblical connotations of this word made them attractive culturally. By contrast, they are little-known or used in this form in other traditions of gardening. In addition, the damp climate of maritime Western Europe made them easier to grow and manage than in other regions.

It was not until the Tudor and Elizabethan times that the garden and the lawn became a place to be loved and admired. Created as walkways and for play areas, the lawns were not as we envisage them today. They were made up of meadow plants, such as camomile, a particular favourite. In the early 1600s the Jacobean epoch of gardening began. It was during this period that the closely-cut "English" lawn was born. By the end of this period, the English lawn was the envy of even the French; it was also seen as a symbol of status by the gentry. In the early 1700s, gardening fashion went through a further change. William Kent and the age of Capability Brown were in progress, and the open "English" style of parkland was seen across Britain and Ireland. Lawns seemed to flow from the garden into the outer landscape.

During Victorian times, as more plants were introduced into Britain and the influence of France and Italy became prevalent, lawns became smaller as borders were created and filled with plants, statues, sculptures, terraces and water features, which started encroaching onto the area covered by the lawn. In the United States, it was not until after the Civil War that lawns began to appear outside middle-class residences. Most people did not have the hired labor needed to cut a field of grass with scythes; average home owners either raised vegetables in their yards or left them alone. If weeds sprouted that was fine. Toward the end of the 19th century, suburbs appeared on the American scene, along with the sprinkler, greatly improved lawn mowers, new ideas about landscaping and a shorter workweek.

Lawns do not have to be, and have not always been, made up of grass alone. Other plants for fine lawns in the right conditions are camomile and thyme. Some lawns, if grown in difficult conditions for grasses, become dominated by whatever weeds can survive there; these include clovers in dry conditions, and moss in damp shady conditions. In more recent times, especially in suburban residential areas, a lawn may refer to an area surrounding a home where some or all of the natural grass or sod has been removed and replaced with artificial turf, stones, mulch, or some other material determined by the homeowner to reduce maintenance and/or water consumption.

Answer
The newspaper isn't a bad place to start. Often you can find in them someone who repairs mowers and resells. You can go by a shop that specializes in lawn equipment and they usually have some that people didn't bother to pick up after repairs. Even the big box stores will sometimes have some reduced ones that may have been returned from someone who didn't like it. Make sure YOU fire it up before you spend a penny. If you can't start it there then how good is it going to work at the house?

What is the best propelled/gas lawn mower for Thick lawn?

The walmart one I have stinks and isn't worth it. I am looking for a good propelled gas lawnmower with a mulching and rear bag for thick grass that I don't have to choke on the exhaust fumes, like I do with this $100 one from Walmart. In the heat it is hard pushing a mower when it doesnt want to be pushed, and when you pull the cord to start it doesnt start, tired of all that , want something better that is under $289. Appreciate all lawn fans replies.

Answer
I bought the Troy-Built one at Lowes with the electric start for $299.00 at Lowes. I love it. Best mower I have ever had. Just turn the key to start. Self propelled front wheel drive rear bagger and mulcher. Has the bigger wheels in back so it manuvers better. It has a Briggs and Stratton motor and a steel cutting deck. Make sure you dont get anything but a steel cutting deck unless you want to replace it in 2 or less years from rust.

I looking to buy a new riding lawn mower from sears and theres two im intersted in.I will be using it to cut the grass and drive around are neighborhood.the one is 21hp and has an oil pump and I dont know what this means but it says it has infinate gearing. the other one doesnt have a oil pump and is 20hp smaller and uses 6 gears. which one is better? and what does infinate speed mean?

Answer
my father and I own a lawn service and we have a craftsman rider. It is a very nice mower. We have the 21 hp briggs and stratton with the oil filter! Runs awsome. this is our third year with it and I can say this is the best we've owned. for sure go with the oil filter system ( longer engine life ) infinate gearing is the hydro trans. no gears just go as slow or as fast as you want no specific gears to put it into. I have the 6 speed gears. but wish i had the other. I hear it's nice! if you have any more ? shoot me an E mail I'll help as much as I can!!

size of riding lawn mowers?

w1w1hardy

I only have 43 1/2" of space on the side of my house. How do I determine if a riding lawn mover will pass through this space so I can get it to the back yard?

Answer
go to a store like sears with a ruler so you can measure the assembled mowers from side to side including the deflector shield. that could also tell you what size mower you really need. a lot of the mowers today are about forty something inches wide. be careful. you may need to settle for a single bladed mower. most of them today have two cutting blades, side by side.
i like sears mowers. i don't like john deer mowers. they are overpriced and i've seen first hand that they're not all that good.
now i know there are people who will swear by them, BUT I'M NOT ONE OF THEM.
ya know if you're only going to mow the back yard, you may have to take the deck off in order to get the mower back there. that's the widest part of the mower and includes the grass deflector which i spoke of earlier.
good luck to ya.

Lawn mower emitting huge clouds of white smoke?

Q. So yesterday I was trying to mow up the hills on my lawn

( I have a hilly lawn)

and the lawn mower would all of a sudden start dying on my almost as if it was being choked by long grass

( there wasn't any long grass to choke it)

and emitting huge white clouds of smoke from the muffler I believe

(I'm not sure if it is the muffler, its the thing on the side of the mower by the primer with the holes in it)

The lawn mower sat outside all winter last season with the same oil in it.
The lawn mower seems to mow just fine on level ground, its just when it is going up hill with the engine drive that it will start dying and emitting the smoke.

I have a full tank of gas.

Answer
Most 4-cycle engines are designed to function on up to a 11 to 14 percent grade. If your lawn is very hilly, your probably trying to run the mower at too steep an incline and oil is getting forced into the cylinder.

Perhaps you should get a 2 cycle mower, like a lawn boy. 2 cycle engines can operate at any angle, even upside down, without harm, or decrease in function.

Looking for a lawn mower than you mix oil to gas. Do they still exist?

skip

I have a steep hill where I have to cut the grass. Mixed gas & oil prevents motor to burn. If they still exist what kind or refer to the closest on the market

Answer
If the hill is so steep you can't use a 4 stroke push lawn mower I think you should get a really nice weed wacker. Most people use weed wackers on a hill that is really steep. Makes it safe too. Or just spray it with weed killer like roundup.

Need a lawn mower recomendation $300-400 range.?

Nick

Looking for a lawn mower recomendation in the $300-400 range. Needs to be self propelled and be able to mulch and bag. I have a medium sized lawn which is mostly flat. Lots of options out there but the three brands I have been looking at are Toro (Home Depot), Troy-bilt (Lowe's), and Craftsmen (Sears). Most seem to have either a Honda or Briggs & Stratton engines. Any recomendations or words of wisdom on specific models or features that I should look for? Would prefer to pay less but will pay a little more if the quality difference is significant.

Answer
My husband has a Husquvarna with a Honda engine on it and he loves it! Well, as close to love as one can get with a mower! LOL And he's had it for probably 5-6 years and that is the longest we have ever had a mower without it falling apart. We've tried all brands and price ranges. We've had Yard Man or Yard Machines, Craftsman, and a couple of others that I don't remember and it seemed he was constantly fixing or something on them.

And I vote for the Honda engines! They are quieter, more powerful for their size and more fuel efficient to boot! Before this mower, my husband would only buy Briggs and I convinced him to try the Honda and he's glad he did. It's so much quieter that I can walk up to him when he's mowing and talk to him without screaming over the noise.

Trying to start a Lawn Mower business!?

Hey everyone - I'm trying to start a business mowing lawns but I'm having some trouble. I don't really hv enough money to buy a 300$ lawn mower or a car that's big enough to hold it.

The most I could do is buy the black & decker trimmer and edger but I don't think that would help in mowing lawns.

Answer
lol, well there is no getting around buying a lawn mower to start a lawn mower business... don't get any electric weed eaters or edgers, even if its cordless, just don't. you don't need an edger at all. buy a straight shaft weedeater and you can edge with that, youtube and practice how to do it. i don't really know what to tell you about the mower, but u at least need a $300 mower. i know a kid that makes some real money with a $400 honda mower and a shindaiwa weed eater.

How do I keep grass from building up under my lawn mower deck?

HAWKEYE

I currently owm a Simplicity Landlord mower.

Answer
Don't mow grass. Hehe.

Ok, really now, the advice to not mow wet grass is very good. Also, don't let it get too long before you mow. Additionally, you can spray it with something (though the non-stick vegetable spray is a new one on me.) Try some of the teflon spray you can get at the nearby HomeDepot. Lastly, if you are having a lot of trouble, try raising the mower deck a little bit.

Why are most lawn mowers red?

Cae

This is a question my husband asked me and I told him I would give this one to all you Y/A folks. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Answer
I really wanted to make a funny comment, but I will choose to be serious here, beings you sound as if you really want to know the right answer... The reason most mowers are red is that from a companies sales standpoint, a red mower attracts the consumers eye, just as if a person shopping for a fast car will most of the time purchase the red one (red vehicles are ticketed more for speeding than any other color). By having red mowers on the display racks at retail outlets, the buyer will notice a red mower before any other color. You've heard the saying... "Hot Red"!! However, most mower companies have their own signature color that they use and alot of them just happen to be red and for good reason. With that said, I will stay with my John Deere "green".. Hope this answers your question...

I've done some research, and I'm thinking I like Cub Cadet or John Deere. I don't want to spend any more than $2000 for the tractor and bagging attachment. Will the cheapest models hold up on a 1/4 acre lawn? Do you have experience with your Deere or Cub Cadet? I can perform maintenance and repairs, but I want something that will last a while without much trouble. Does anyone have a cheaper brand (Yard Machines etc) they are happy with?

Answer
They're both good mowers as are several others. I've had a couple of Craftsman that I'd swear by. They've got a good one on sale right now for about $1700 w/bagger.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/s_10153_12605_Lawn+%26+Garden_Riding+Mowers+%26+Tractors_Lawn+Tractors+%28less+than+2+acres%29#viewItems=40&pageNum=1&sortOption=ORIGINAL_SORT_ORDER&&filter=Accepts+Bagger|Included&lastFilter=Accepts+Bagger

Cub Cadet has a good deal on this one. w/ a bagger it'll be about $2K
http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_14101_534208_16203_-1_600000_33810
I'm thinking that'll be my next mower or one like it.

John Deere is always good but overpriced in my opinion.

All of these mowers are rated for up to 2 1/2 acres. Your 1/4 acre lot should be a piece of cake. Just remember, sharp blades and dry grass.

Whatever your choice, check out warranty, service availability, cost of maintenance (blades, belts, battery etc.) some mowers can be very expensive to maintain. Is there a dealer local?

My first Craftsman lasted 10 years and was still running pretty good in fact when I got a new one. It's 10y/o now (another Craftsman) and I'm looking. I have about 2 acres to mow. Just keep the air filters clean and oil fresh.
I also have a C/man self propelled walk behind that I mow the front with (lotta stuff to mow around, flower beds, etc). It's 5 years old and still runs like new practically.
