I'm asking this because my parents received something from the cops and not just me everyone in my neighborhood got on. They say this.Remove all items from yard to include old lawn mowers, trailers, go carts, misc, garbage, lawn equip, cans, containers, metal, plastic, wood, etc. I was shocked. We never had this for 7 years. But now I think they are taking it seriously for some reason. Please help!

Obviously it is a violation of local zoning code.

There are two reasons such codes suddenly get enforced.

One is complaints from neighbors, because such hillbilly crap tends to drive down property values. This enforcement wave could very well be a result of some guy down the street who's had his house on the market for three years now and can't find a buyer. It also could be some councilman who when driving through your neighborhood thinks it looks like a ghetto.

The second reason is that municipal budgets have been slashed. So they're looking for new revenue streams to pay for necessities. Such low hanging fruit as code violations rarely have as rapid repercussions on elected officials as cutting services or not balancing the budget.

Aside from some having larger engines and wider swaths which help you work faster, the industrial grade stuff will generally have a longer Mean Time Between Failure, meaning they will run more days at 8 hours a day before breaking down. They have better construction, like using ball bearings in places instead of bushings.

Hi Susan

If you can buy 100 percent gasoline, that is what you should use. It runs better and is not as bad about gumming up your carburetor as ethanol gas is. There is a station near me that has non ethanol gasoline so there are a few around. If you are going to store your mower over the winter it is best to add an additive to prolong the fuel's life. A couple of these are STP fuel treatment, Sta-bil.

I am not familiar with these two models. If you want a good evaluation of lawn mowers Consumer .Reports Magazine publishes a comparison of top rated lawn mowers in its May issue every year. Go to a library and look at a copy or you can subscribe online. Generally for push lawnmowers Honda models and Toro models come out on top and John Deere is the leader for riding mowers Between models of the same brand it is a matter of what features you want.

It sounds like you probably want a push mower, though a self-propelled is much easier on the legs & back, especailly on hills with a large yard.

Some of the more recent improvements:

Squeeze lever control of self propelled wheel speed.
A one touch control of cutting deck. One lever instead of 4 moves deck.
Key (electric) Start
No choke starting.
Gas caps which automatically add fuel stabilizer to fuel to prevent clogging of carb.
Longer homeowner warranties. (2 years+)

With a large yard, I would get at least a 6.5 HP engine with a mulching blade. Large rear wheels are overrated, though they do make it easier to negotiate some turns.

The John Deere JS45 ($500) has the pivoting front wheels which makes the unit more manuverable around tight turns, a plus for a yard with alot of trees and beds. JD is also known for better cut quality and reliability. A smaller cut width (21" vs. 22") with a similar powered engine will yield a better quality cut. That would be my pick.

Have time on my hands, and see no reason to pay the overly high price people charge for yard work.

I have a straight lawn, no golf green type look, main grasss in front and only a little in the back. Don't want expense of riding lawn mower. Want to get one easy to work. For some strange reason when young my father did not want my brother and I to mow the yard, he didn't either?????????????????

So am starting from scratch, but this is not rocket science. A friend warned me about not getting one that you have change each wheel for lever. Basics on buying and doing appreciated, such as dumping grass, maintaining, basically what need to do.

In addition, where to buy and about how much to pay is also a question.

Go to Sears. The people that work there are very helpful and can tell you what type of mower you should get according to how big of a yard you have and if you just want a mower or a mulcher/mower combo.

I just bought a brand new lawn mower from home depot. I have only used it once. I tried to start it for the second time last week. It will start, however quickly dies after about 5-10 seconds.I did notice if I push the primer in every other second that it would run but I can't cut my grass like that. Please help me!!! The grass is knee high and my homeowners association started sending my letters about it. I just don't understand it because the lawn mower is brand new.

I bought a Lawn Boy 20" push mower from Home Depot last year to replace my old one finally died. This mower is terrible. My main problem is that, unless the grass barely needs to be cut, the clipping exhaust port clogs up and the thing starts dropping most all clippings with an almost empty bag. The bag has never made it more than about half full. Is there anything I can do to improve this (new blade?) or is it just a crappy mower?

Can I change cutting height for lawn mower without draining oil/gas?

I just got a cheap lawn mower from Lowe's and didn't really care that I had to adjust the wheel height manually since there is not a lever, as on most self propelled mowers, but now, in it's median height, it is barely skimming the grass.

Now that I have it filled with oil and gas, must I drain the fluids to turn it over and adjust the wheel height? I know, maybe a stupid question, but I just don't want to damage the machine. Thanks for your help!

no, just prop one end up about a foot off the ground, and you can reach under with a wrench to change them, then do the other end, itll be fine.

If I got in a pinch during a power outage and connected a 12 volt to 110 volt power convertor to the battery of my lawn tractor (via a cigarette lighter connection that I can install), how much power would be available? I have a typical $900 Lowes lawn mower with a 15.5 HP Briggs engine. And I don't have the power convertor yet, so I can buy any size.

Well that's a good source of power ..but its not very much... the charge rate is about 5amps...maybe a little more right after cranking so lets just say its 7amps...and has a 10amp fuse in there somewhere..7 amps at 12 volts is 84watts ..Now the little battery in the lawn mower is good for about 120amps for about 60 seconds...then it melts...or it can put out 12amps for 600 seconds or 6 amps for about 20 minutes...so if you can run what you need off the battery plus the charging rates your in business..However if your really wanting to use the lawnmower to its absolute best..you might find the drive belt and make an adapter so you could run a 12vdc alternator which charges a deep cycle battery that in turn is connected to an inverter and get a good 1200 watts at 120volts for quite awhile..They really were made to cut grass though..if I could just get my kids on it...Oh well!..From the E

My family transplanted south and live down in Blountville TN, on 4.5 acres. 2 need to be mowed. She supplies a ride on mower, and the "local" mows. When he walks out with a fifty, he's thrilled. Takes a couple hours.

I live up near Boston. My lawn care crew comes in weekly. I have about 8000 sq. ft. That's a fifth of an acre. I pay $35.00 + a $7.00 gas surcharge. So $42.

Up here in Boston's burbs in the upper middle class, rich, lower class towns a 2 acre, manicured lawn could be calculated this way to see if you make money.

In this example, we'll be using a 54" zero turn deck mower with sulky, on a level lawn, with a straight run row (NO OBSTACLES).

We will have to make 66, 295' long passes with no margin of error to finish the lawn in the quickest time. This is a one pass job. If the client wants a double diagonal pass for that "baseball" field, effect, the final fee will go up at least 50%.

Assume the lawn is a perfect square of 295' x 295', or 87,025 sq. ft. in total.

The mower and driver will travel at 5 mph or 5280 ft. per mile. At 5 mph, the mower and driver are traveling at 26,400 ft per hour.

Each row mowed will reduce the total by 295' l x 4.5' w or 1327.5 sq.ft. By the time the entire lawn of 87,025 sq. ft. is finished, the mower and driver will have traveled 19,470 ft.

Divide 19470fph/26400fph =0.7375. Round this to .75 to tidy the math.

.75 x 60min = 45 minutes of mowing time, and that's hauling butt, and assuming no stops, breakdowns, cell phone calls from the boss, nature calls, etc...

Add in drive time to the job, unloading, mowing, string trimming, reloading, fuel, insurance, wages, workman's comp, fica, futa, etc... and you can charge about $175. Ho much did you make? That is always the magic question.

For the lawn it needs to consider if you have a push or riding mower, how big the yard is, does the yard have obstacles trees, garden gnomes, etc. I base mine on this equation (price of gas + age of owner (less by 5% if senior citizen)+ acres of yard) An example would be like for a gallon of gas costing $3.11 and It takes 2 gallons to mow the lawn it costs $7.22 plus if lawn is small like one acre $10 dollars an acre and if the person is capable of mowing themself I add 5%. So for an average lawn I make $17 to $20.

Does anyone have a suggestion of any others, especially of lesser cost, but the same quality for the amount of mowing to be done? Also, suggestions on which size of deck and the amount of time it would take to mow this amount would be great. We have a Torro with a 54" deck now, but we are sharing it with my father-in-law and it is becoming a hassle to take back and worth every week or so. Plus, we have to get the bushhog to use too. We use the Torro for yard (about 1.5 acres) and the bushhog for the other acres. That's why we need one that would be great to do it all! ~thanks

I'd Look at exmark or grasshopper's..., any 42 inch with a hydro riding mower will do 1.5 acres easy though... I'd also think about simplicity/snapper mowers as well. Simplicity owns snapper.

The yard I mow with the mower I want to convert is almost 5 acres. What's the ideal mower to use for converting purposes?

Any mower will do.
There is 2 ways of doing this.
First is to take a riding lawn mower and remove the engine and axle. Replace the axle with an electric transaxle (These are quite common these day), look for one that is minimum 1000 to 1200 watts. You will need a motor controller for this and throttle (There are foot pedal throttles.), make sure the controller has a reverse function on it. Then you will need a motor (At least 1hp to run the blades - single blde of 36", 2hp for multiple blades)

or, use a lawn mower that has a hydrualic transaxle (very common these days) on it. This way you don't have to purchase a new axle and controller. With this you will need at least a 3hp DC motor that runs at 3500-3700rpm.

Most mowers now use a belt system to transfer power from the motor to the axle and blades.

Now batteries.....this is where it gets expensive. It needs batteries that have a high amp output(Discharge rate), with a high aH (Amp Hour)..and if you use a 24, 36 or 48DC motor, these can range from $300 to $1000 each. (i.e. golf cart batteries which are generally 6 volts). Or you can go for some exoctic battery packs, but these can run $1200 - $3000.

This is why the major manufactuers like Deere don't have any models really to speak of. It's not the cost of manufacturing the battery riding mower, which is about the same as a gas mower, but it is the cost of the batteries. (Say a $1400 riding gas mower, would be about $3500 - $4500 as a battery mower.)

There are some great sites out there for batteries and motors. You can search under "EV", electric vehichle supplies.

By the way, I am making a riding battery lawn mower for myself right now for my 2 acres.

Don't use an electric one. If you are above 5.10, you need to get one with a straight shaft and not one that is curved.

Best brands are Stihl, Echo, Huscavarna, and I have had good luck with a toro also. See if you can find one with a Honda Engine on it.

You want to get a high quality trimmer that allows you to replace the line very easily. With 5 acres you are going to have to let the line out 7 or 8 times. Also get a heavy duty one that uses a thicker line so you won't have to keep replacing it. Best Luck!

Have you tried local antique / collectible shops? A lot in my area will carry your item for a commission, so you can set the price.

Fixing up a REALLY bad lawn?

So, I've moved into a house with a lot of problems. Having fixed just about everything indoors, I'm now moving on to the garden.

It was basically one big lawn, but has been left for years it seems and is over-run with weeds and fleas. Having never done anything beyond a bit of container gardening, I know nothing about getting this sorted out. The soil is stony and difficult to dig, so I need to sort that out too.

In an ideal world I would want to split it into quarters with a path, with a little patio area in the middle. one quarter would have my son's climbing frame in it, another would have chickens, and the remaining two would have raised vegetable beds, so it's not crucial that I dig over the whole garden and get it planting-ready or anything, but I want to get it decent looking and healthy again so I can work on it.

Go ahead and put in the chicken pen... again... it's considered hardscape.

And finally... the raised beds... While the internet is full of suggestions for raised bed gardening that doesn't involve digging in the existing soil... short-cuts don't actually work.
My city is full of yards where the home-owner brought in "top-soil" and dumped it... and then tried to garden in it. It doesn't work.

The garden is one area where you will have to dig in the stony soil. Use a mattock, run the sprinkler over the soil to soften it up. Work in lots of organic material.

Finally... about turf.
I hate it... it's wasted space, and wasted resources... the less that you do to that area, the better. Set the mower blade high, the grasses will eventually shade out the weeds.
With the play area on the lawn, you will really need to avoid dangerous chemicals... the children will appreciate treasures like 4-leaf clovers and dandy lion flowers!

Should I replace my lawn mower or get it fixed?

My 7-year-old Toro self-propelled lawn mower's cord is off so the self-propelled part doesn't work, the engine will no longer start (it wasn't fully engaged last time I used it... it was running slow and loud with a lot of smoke and used a lot of gasoline). The last time I got my mower serviced it was over $100. The newer model Toro is $350-$400.

At this point should I just buy a new one with all those problems?

is it possible for me to buy a house?

i am 20 yrs old..i work full time $16/hr mon-fri, ive worked there for 2.5 years. i have "good" credit. and im wondering if its possible to be qualified to buy a $350,000 house. its one of those things where if i dont try, ill never knw. but would i hurt my credit applying? is this possible?

Not only will you not qualify under today's terms, but buying a house of that price on your income could potentially wreck your entire financial future. There is no need for a house that expensive and just think of all the bills that come with a house - utilities, property taxes, repairs, more furniture, lawn mower, etc.

Do not apply as it will get rejected and a "rejection" will show on your credit history. I would say save up and make sure you have AT LEAST 20% down and don't buy a house that's more than 4 times your pre-tax income.

how do i sharpen the blades on my lawn tractor?

i followed the instructions on about.com and my tractor still isn't cutting good enough. i have to mow over the yard twice because the blade doesn't cut evenly.

whats the proper way to sharpen mower blades? i used a file the first time (a couple weeks ago). can i sharpen them with a bench grinder? do they need to be really sharp? when i bought new blades last year, they weren't really sharp, but they cut great.

can someone recommend a good set of blades? i have a 42" deck. i mow about 4 acres (4 seperate yards).
theres only one way to put the blades on my deck, so i know they are installed correctly. i would rather do the work myself since im on a tight budget.

Your first order of business should be checking to see if you might've mounted the blades on upside down. This is really easy to do, and makes cutting the lawn impossible. However, if you still can't find the problem, read the following paragraph.

I have a similar sized lawn and a similar sized mower. What we use is a bench grinder. Using the grinder allows me to get an extremely sharp, quality edge on my blades. Just be careful that you're not overzealous with the grinder, though.

I know that the lawn tractors at Home Depot are made to compete with the lower quality tractors, but why are the horsepower rates higher than those of the x300 found at the dealer? Even the smallest L-series has more hp than the x-300. Is the Kawasaki engine that good? Just curious as I will probably be buying an x300 within the next week.

Also, has anyone done any comparisons between the JD x300 and the T-series Kubota mowers?

Buy from your local dealer. Kawasaki makes a good motor. I have a 1994 John Deere 425 with a Kawasaki and it has 1,000 hrs on it. The tractor looks like it just come off the showroom floor and it runs just as good. It burns NO oil. It is a little thirsty but it is 20hp and I have a 60" deck.
