Suggestions on a good lawn mower?

Kristen L

Hello, I need to buy a lawn mower for my yard. My yard is under an acre but is sloped in the front and has a slight hill in the back yard area. Most of the yard is grass and not tree, so there is a substantial amount of grass to mow. We now have a service that does it for us, but to cut costs and get exercise I am now looking for a new mower. my question is..what are the best brands of mowers that I can get affordably? I need one that is self propelled due to the hills and a side mulcher instead of a bagger would be helpful. I have looked into Lawnboy and craftsman and unsure of the quality. I would love to own a ride on mower however they are too pricey and my range is more like 350 and under. Also any tips if I try to find a used machine as far as what to look for? I have been looking at Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, and Walmart..unsure where it is best to buy one. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Toro Self Pace mower is the best thing out here in my opinion. My yard is about the same size as yours and I love it. It adjusts to what ever speed you want to walk, it is a mulcher, side discharge, and bagger all in one. Everyone sells them, If you have a Costco membership, they have it now.

Also when I do my yard it is equivelent to walking 3.5 miles... great exercise...

Answer
I think that the craftsman is a better quality lawn mower, however i have an 82 year old neighbor who has the other one that has large rear wheels, and i have tried it and it is fairly easy to use.
1) i would recommend craftsman if:
* you want for professional-looking job
*long lifespan of mower (higher quality mower)
*small Business or residential

2) I would recommend Briggs and Stratton if:
*you want to get id done quick and easy, and don't mind if your lawn does not look like it was done professional. (im pretty sure this one is lighter than the other one)

I hope this helps! :)

Lawn Mower purchase?

Cyn

I need to buy a new lawn mower. I think I want electric powered because it is quieter and doesn't produce so much pollution as a gas mower. It was suggested that I buy one that is self propelled but I can't find seem to find any. What are your feelings about gas vs electric and push vs self propelled? I want to spend no more than $250 or so. Thank you.

Answer
Trade in your old gasoline-powered mower for a new manual model or an electric corded or rechargeable cordless lawn mower. You'll save time and money-and help the environment.

Manual mowers are excellent for small lawns. They are inexpensive, quiet, easy to maintain and healthy to use.

Electric mowers work well for small to medium lawns. Modern pollution controls required for utility plants make this option much cleaner than gasoline mowers.

Electric mowers are:

Inexpensive to operateâabout $5 per year for electricity.
Easy to maintainâno costly engine tune-ups or messy oil changes.
Cleanâno spilled oil or gasoline, no exhaust fumes, significantly reduced air pollution.
Quietâabout half the noise of gasoline mowers.
Easy to startâpush-button starting, no more yanking on a starter cord.

how can a 13 year old male make money?

Andrew

I live in RI its summer, i dont have a lawn mower, nothing to sell, and no one wants baby siters
How can I make money fast?

Answer
As Seen On OPRAH & 20/20 - TURN $6 into $24600
Earn money using PAYPAL as seen on Oprah & 20/20
THE PAYPAL 5 DOLLAR MONEY-MAKING METHOD
AS SEEN ON OPRAH EARN HUGE $$$$$$$$
all you need is:
1) An email address
2) A PayPal account
3) $5.00
Ever since the internet became popular, the word "scam" has become a daily term. I have never once tried any money making "system" outside of this because of that very reason. However, after reading reports on the validity and reputation of this money making system (seen on Oprah, CNN, and other media forums) I decided to give this one a shot... Especially since the so called "risk" is only $5.00. I mean, for the chance, what a joke right? Anyway, only hours after implementing this exact system I about fell out of my chair as money ACTUALLY started rolling in. I couldn't believe it and for that reason, I wrote this intro and became a believer in this system.
WHAT IS IT?
The idea is that of a system that takes advantage of the power of
compounding. And in a big way, let me tell you.
This system is a legit and profitable one. Here is how it works...
Following this EXACT process is what creates the money, and that is why this system
has been raved about in the media. Altering the system creates weak results. The legality of this system comes from the idea that you are of course creating a mailing list, and a "service" is being provided (more on that later.) Now on to how your $5.00 creates BIG money...
INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:
The first thing to do is highlight and SAVE this entire post in word
or notepad on your computer so you can come back to it later.
After that, if you are not already a PayPal user you need to go to
the PayPal website at https://www.paypal.com/us/mrb/pal=6M64MY4Q2Z7L6
and SIGN UP. If you want to be able to receive credit card payments from other
people then you will need to sign up for a PREMIER or BUSINESS account (not a PERSONAL account, it's limited to, $500). This is highly recommended to allow others easy payment options. In order to place the initial $5 into your account, you will have to verify your bank account with PAYPAL (which may take a few days). PAYPAL is 100% secure and is used by millions of people worldwide. If you have difficulty trying to send payment to any of the listed email addresses then skip that address and move on to the next one. This could happen if an individual forgets to upgrade their account to Premier or Business and has reached the limit on their account.
STEP 2:
Here is where the action occurs. The first thing to do is to send a
$1.00 payment to each of the 5 email addresses on the current list
from your PayPal account. To do this quickly and successfully, follow
these simple steps:
1. Login to PayPal and click on the "Send Money" tab near the top of
the screen
2. In the "Recipient's Email" field enter the email address
3. In the "Amount" field enter "1" (This is your $1.00 payment)
4. In the "Category" field select "Service" (Keeping it legal)
5. In the "Subject" field type "EMAIL LIST", and in the "NOTE" field
enter "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST". By doing this, you are
creating a service and maintaining the legality of the system by
"paying" for the service.
6. Finally, click on the "Continue" button to complete the payment.
Repeat these steps for each of the 6 email addresses. That's it! By
sending the $1.00 payment to each address, you are implementing the
compounding POWER of the system. You will reap what you sow!
Here is the current e-mail list:
*************************************************
The email list:

1) funny...@live.com
2) off...@vincentstergin.com
3) asiru...@sbcglobal.net
4) angus.ze...@gmail.com
5) ngapo12@gmail.com

************************************************
STEP 2:
Now take the #1 email off of the list that you see above (from your saved file), move the other addresses up (5 becomes 4, 4 becomes 3, etc.) and add YOUR email address (the one used for your PayPal account) as number 5 on the list. This is the only part of the document that should be changed. ** Make sure your email address is the one you have registered with PayPal **
STEP 3:
Post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups or message boards. Keep in mind that there are tens of thousands of groups online! All you need is 200, but remember the more you post the more money you make - as well as everyone else on the list! I've began to see money roll in before I even hit 100 posts, but try to hit around 200 to allow maximum exposure.
Use Netscape, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or whatever your internet browser is to search for various news groups, on-line forums, message boards, bulletin boards, chat sites, discussions, discussion groups, on-line communities, etc. For example, log on to any search engine like yahoo.com or google.com and type in a subject like 'MILLIONAIRE MESSAGE BOARD', 'MONEY MAKING DISCUSSIO

Push mower will not start!!?

Caiden

Okay, I bought a BRAND NEW in spring of 2012, right out of the box, push button start, push mower!
I used it plenty of times and have NOT had ANY problems with it.
Two weeks ago, on a wednesday, I put gas in it, filled it up, on my merry routine, and it would not start for the life of me!
So, the next day, I tried starting it AGAIN.. And again, it would NOT START!
I tried both the starter button and pulling it..
The NEXT DAY I try it again...and YET AGAIN it WILL NOT START!!!
..okay, I left it for the weekend hoping that maybe the gas would make its way to the engine..
On TUESDAY of the next week, I tried starting it and still NOTHING!!!
Now, I'm pissed! I let it sit in the garage for, now, another whole freaking week letting the gas settle and evaporate whatever the hell it's gotta do!

Today, I go outside, and try again!!!!
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!

I took off the filter, cleaned it, try making the engine suck the gas in, I had it ALMOST start but it didn't turn over, I pulled the string to start it, it went VROOM dun-dun-dun---d-d-d-dundun-d-d-dun and it died!

Take note, last time I used it and it ran, I left no gas in it, the tank is so damn small I can hardly do my whole lawn and I have almost an acre. But this always happens..

So, I don't have a primer button, I put new oil in it, new gas, cleaned the filter, charged the batter...
Still won't start..

...I'm so glad I'm a patient man or I swear to god,
I would @#$%^$# DRAG this mower to the dump!

Anyway, what do you think?
Thanks for any advice!
Much appreciated!

Answer
First of all, avoid the temptation to throw it out and calm down although I know it's frustrating.. Is the mower under warranty? I'd have the dealer repair it if so.

If not...I would pull the spark plug and see if it's getting spark....remove the plug, reattach the plug wire to the plug tip, hold the plug threaded base or electrode to the metal of the engine using an insulated pliers and crank over the engine. If the plug has a bright bluish spark at the electrode, then the ignition is working OK. If no spark, you have ignition problems which a shop would have to look at. I doubt the spark plug would be too worn or need to be regapped but you may want to install a new plug.

The next step is to try starting the engine with a little carb cleaner sprayed into the carb throat (remove air filter if there is one)...or pour a teaspoon of gas into the plug hole and reinstall the plug....then try starting. If the engine starts and dies...repeat putting a little gas in the plug hole and restart until it stays running. May take a few tries. Or keep spraying a little carb cleaner spray into the carb throat and restart until the engine runs by itself. Replace air filter after you get the engine running. Sometimes the small passages in the carb can get gummed up from old gas which needs to be purged out and flushed by running the engine with fresh gas. Best to use products like Stabil or Seafoam in every tank of gas to keep any gas in the carb from gumming up over time....especially when storing in the off season. Parts stores carry carb cleaner spray and Stabil or Seafoam products.

Is there a kill switch for the engine which shuts down the engine if a handle is released? If there is , that could be a problem if the cable from the handle to the switch is out of adjustment or the switch itself. It sounds more like you have spark or carb problems...most likely from stale gas in the carb.

It's 2012 so why don't we have a 100+MPG Car?

uturn784

I would like for someone to explain to me why there is not a car that get's 100mpg.

You mean to tell me that in today's world of electronics and computers that they simply cannot build a vehicle that gets 100Mpg?? That's total Bull and you know it. If they can build stealth fighters and other complicated aircraft then how hard could it be to produce a simple car that gets very good gas mileage?

For example, you could have a very small gas generator which sends electricity to 4 electric wheel hub motors. The car may not be the fastest car but it would obviously work.

Answer
The technology DOES exist, but no one would buy a car that weighs 500 lbs, powered by a souped up lawn mower motor that can carry only one person.

You're only going to get so much go out of each gallon of gas.

The stories of 100 mpg carbs being destroyed are B.S.........

Can you refill a lighter with lawn mower gas?

Lacey

Answer
Lawn mower gas? You mean like regular 87-91 octane gasoline, which I fill my lawn mower with? Or do you mean the gasoline mixed with lubricant, which I put in my weed-wacker?

Oh, never mind. I'm sure both will blow your hand off pretty quickly, if you're able to actually get that good of a seal.

Unless you're talking about a Zippo. Zippos will work with any flammable liquid (gasoline, kerosene, rubbing alcohol, or even 151 proof rum).

How do I use a gas powered lawn mower?

Teriq M

I took some of your advice and I decided to do lawn mowing for my job.
Problem is I know how to mow the lawn but I don't know how to start a lawn mower!

Answer
1. First you make sure it has gas in it.
2. Then you have to prime it. There should be a button to push near the gas tank - it may have some information near it, like ' 3 X' which means push it three times.
3. There may be a throttle with a fast and slow marking, like maybe even a rabbit and a turtle. Set it for fast.
4. Then you pull the starter rope while holding down the lever on the handle. The lever on the handle is a safety feature that makes the mower stop when you let go of it, so as long as the mower is in use you have to hold onto it or restart it.
5. There may be an additional lever on the handle to hold down if your mower is self-propelled. You get extra rolling power if you hold down that handle. If you are pulling the mower backwards you don't hold that down.

If the mower is stopped but the engine is warm, you shouldn't have to prime it again to restart it. And if you pull the rope too many times you may flood the engine and have to let it sit for awhile before trying again.

Is there someone around who can give you some tips? Be careful.

What the best transmission for a 20HP motorcycle build?

Kyle

I'm building a motorcycle useing a 20 horse diesel off a lawn mower I plan on making it chain driven and I know the transmission need to have a 90° turn in it

Answer
Local diesel conversions have been using Harley transmissions and Yanmar diesels, a couple used Haatz engines and again the Harley tranny. The Harley big twin tranny from 1950s on up is a separated unit with a clutch pack, chain or belt primary drive good for 175 to 100 hp. The other separably trannies maybe used are BMW and Moto Guzzi- these are the shaft drives and will have the clutch pack on the tractor engine used- adapters may be made- the old VW engine into /2, /5 transmission had adaptor kit circular at many BMW dealers- but alignment on that kind of set up will be tighter tolerance than the Harley with chain or belt primary coupling. Older english cycles had separate engine and transmissions until mid 1960s, then went unit construction except for Enfield, Matchless-- early Triumph and later Enfields are hard to find- but note the Indian made Enfields are using somediesell engines of 300 to 500cc - a 425 Landini gardentractorr/utility seems to fit into Enfield frame and connect to the tranny fairly well, is a common swap in India and some other countries that can get the Indian made old design cycle tranny and the Italian engine.

In market for riding lawn mower. Suggestions please?

Trav9536

I've done some research, and I'm thinking I like Cub Cadet or John Deere. I don't want to spend any more than $2000 for the tractor and bagging attachment. Will the cheapest models hold up on a 1/4 acre lawn? Do you have experience with your Deere or Cub Cadet? I can perform maintenance and repairs, but I want something that will last a while without much trouble. Does anyone have a cheaper brand (Yard Machines etc) they are happy with?

Answer
They're both good mowers as are several others. I've had a couple of Craftsman that I'd swear by. They've got a good one on sale right now for about $1700 w/bagger.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/s_10153_12605_Lawn+%26+Garden_Riding+Mowers+%26+Tractors_Lawn+Tractors+%28less+than+2+acres%29#viewItems=40&pageNum=1&sortOption=ORIGINAL_SORT_ORDER&&filter=Accepts+Bagger|Included&lastFilter=Accepts+Bagger

Cub Cadet has a good deal on this one. w/ a bagger it'll be about $2K
http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_14101_534208_16203_-1_600000_33810
I'm thinking that'll be my next mower or one like it.

John Deere is always good but overpriced in my opinion.

All of these mowers are rated for up to 2 1/2 acres. Your 1/4 acre lot should be a piece of cake. Just remember, sharp blades and dry grass.

Whatever your choice, check out warranty, service availability, cost of maintenance (blades, belts, battery etc.) some mowers can be very expensive to maintain. Is there a dealer local?

My first Craftsman lasted 10 years and was still running pretty good in fact when I got a new one. It's 10y/o now (another Craftsman) and I'm looking. I have about 2 acres to mow. Just keep the air filters clean and oil fresh.
I also have a C/man self propelled walk behind that I mow the front with (lotta stuff to mow around, flower beds, etc). It's 5 years old and still runs like new practically.

Availablity Of Manual Lawn Mowers?

David Clar

Are these still available?

Answer
If you know the manufacturer/model number of your mower, you can go to the manufacturer's website. If the mower is over 15-20 years old though it probably won't be available. I bought a 2005 troy bilt mower in a private sale and had to go download the manual so I could replace the belts

riding lawn mower?

chris n

How many HP do you guys suggest for a riding mower to cut a 1/2 acre of lawn, the yard has alot of rolling hills with a few fairly steep climbs.I was thinking Husqvarna, what do you think?

Answer
Husqvarna makes the Craftsman mowers. MTD makes Cub, White, Troy-Built, Yard man, Yard Machines, Bolens, and the new Toro tractors. The John Deeres in Lowes and Home Depot are made to last 250 hours and be tossed. That is all the "discount" brands.

If you are looking for a mower go to a dealer, even if its John Deere. The dealer can service the machine after the sale. Most will even deliver for free. They know the machines and the feature that will work for your conditions and situation in your yard. You are going to talk to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about, and not someone who will be in paint tomorrow.

I would recommend a Snapper of a Simplicity. Simplicity has a mower called the Regent that is 18 HP with a 38" deck, and sells for $1999. You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

Hope this helps

Painting a riding lawn mower?

I want to paint a boring looking cub cadet yard bug but i have no idea where to start. I suppose it would be like painting a car but i could still use some help with what kind of paint to use and stuff.

Answer
rustoleum spray paint from Lowes or Home Depot does a wonderful job after you clean the surface with acetone very carefully not to get near any source of flame or spark while you do it as it is very flammable.

What is the difference between propelled, electric and gas Lawn mower?

lilfinevin

I am looking to purchase a lawn mower with a collector and have no clue what the differenc is in each of the 3 types that seem to be out there.

Answer
Self-Propelled means that there's a mechanism that helps the mower go forward when you push on the handle. It reduces the work you have to do in pushing that SOB all over your lawn...which is nice, but doesn't make it completely without effort, either.

Electric mowers can come in two flavors: Corded, and battery-operated. Legend says that the battery operated ones have come a long way. We had one 10 years ago, and you had to REALLY keep up on your lawn, or the battery-op mower just couldn't hack through the grass, especially in the early summer when it rains a lot and the grass goes insane. Corded ones have plenty of zip and power, you just have to make sure you don't run over the extension cord. We never had a collection bag on ours, so I don't know about that part of it. You also never have trouble starting one up, and you don't have to tinker with stupid stuff like spark plugs or small engine repair. Or gasoline, for that matter. They also tend to be lighter, weight-wise.

Gas lawn mowers are what most people have...these are small engines that run on gas, so you'll have to keep that around. Most of them have collection bags which will need to be emptied two or three times per mowing, even in a small yard like ours. They still require maintenance; my hubby isn't very handy (ok, he's a handyman's idiot), and I know nothing about small engines, so I have to take my mower to someone competent to have the blade sharpened and engine tuned and the whole thing lubed and such.

Ask your neighbors if they know anyone who does lawn mower maintenance and then ask the mower guy if he has mower recommendations. We took ours in and he said, "A Snapper? I never see those things in here!" We took that as a good sign. Hubby was dumb enough to mow wet grass and then not clean out the underside, so it solidified into a concrete mass and the blade wouldn't turn. Don't do that.

Consumer Reports seems to like the following mowers:

Gas-powered push models:
Lawn-Boy 10640
Cub Cadet 11A-18MC

Corded electric push models:
Black & Decker MM875

Cordless electric push models:
Black & Decker CMM1200

Self-Propelled Models:
Toro Recycler 20333
Toro Recycler 20332
Toro Recycler 20330
Craftsman 37435
Lawn-Boy 10641
Craftsman 37624

Good luck!!

are electric lawn mower better than gas?

MATADOR

I am thinking about buying a lawn mower, electric or gas, does anyone has any experience on the different benefits you can get from either one?, would also like to know what are good brands.
By the way , I do have a small front and back yard.

Answer
Another option is a manual mower. I've been using one for a few years on a small .25 acre lot. It takes me about 45 minutes to do my lawn. The only drawbacks are it doesn't cut tall or wet grass very well. If you cut weekly - or sometimes more - it does quite well.

You don't have to worry about gas or batteries or cords. Just pull it out and start mowing. Best of all, it's quiet.

What is the difference between a lawn mower and a lawn tractor?

Lynda

If the difference is you ride one and not the other then why does john deere have one that you can ride called a riding mower?

Answer
I presume you meant to ask what is the difference between a riding lawn mower, and a lawn tractor....

There's not much difference these days.

It used to be, that a lawn tractor was slightly larger, had more horsepower, and could run attachments, often supplying power to the attachment. And had a higher price tag.

Places like Sears tho, have blurred the line, by making a full price range and feature list, in both riding lawn mowers, and lawn tractors. The result is, that you can actually buy a riding lawn mower, that has more power and features, than some lawn tractors. (I believe theyve even dropped referring to their riding mowers as 'mowers' and are now calling all of them 'tractor series')

Its almost like asking what is the difference between manufacturer series of auto's.... Chevy to GM, and Ford to Mercury, for example. General rule of thumb... GM's tend to cost more than Chevy's, and Mercurys tend to cost more than Fords...and the biggest difference when comparing models, is the features or trim package. In the same way, lawn tractors usually cost more than lawn mowers. "Usually" But as I said the lines have become pretty blurred.

If you are shopping for a new mower/tractor then walk in with a list of features you want... and how much you want to spend. Ignore what name tag they are putting on it, unless you want to resell it in a year or two.

Looking to buy a Lawn Mower. Zero Turn or Tractor?

Trevor

I'm a first time home buyer with 2.18 acres of level grass to mow. I would like to know what kind of mower to buy either being a zero turn or tractor. Like to have a mulcher. I want to spend between 2 and 4000 on a mower being used or new. I don't need any attachments on a mower cause I have something else to use this on. Please help as I will need one i the coming months. Good quality low maintenance mower

Answer
I would go with a Zero Turn
I have 1 acre and have a John Deere Zero Turn Mower.
If you dont need to pull any attachments, then there is no reason to get a lawn tractor.
Zero turn mowers have alot of Pluses
Much faster ( My mower has a 42in deck and can mow my acre in 45 minutes)
If you have alot of obtacles (trees), zero turn can mow right around the tree on a dime. (lawn tracotr might take a few passes to cut close enough to the tree.
I absoulutly love my zero-turn... used to have a craftsman Lawn tractor... it sucked. grass clumped

Answer
I had this same problem with a snow blower and know exactly what you are going through. The carborator needs to be cleaned. It has "gunk" in it that keeps the carborator from mixing the gas and air properly. Take it apart and wipe it down with acetone to get all the gunk out of it and you should be good to go. For me, I kept the gas in my snow blower all summer long and it got gunked up from sitting. I thought it was just hard to get started, so I got some starter fluid and sprayed that into the carbourator and it would start right up but only run for about 5 seconds (until the starting fluid burned off) and then stall. Sound familiar? During the winter, either run your mower dry or put gas stabilizer in it so it doesn't gunk up.

Do you use regular gas for the lawn mower?

Pedroia's

I got a used lawn mower and I'm not sure what type of gas to put in it.

Answer
some push mowers such as LAWN BOY use mixed gas as they are 2-stroke engines but 99% of all other mowers use regular unleaded

Difference in 23hp vs. 27hp in lawn mower (Husqvarna)?

Chris S

I am looking at looking at buying a garden tractor. A Husqvarna 2354GXLS (23hp 54" Deck) vs. 2754GLS (27hp 54" Deck) vs. Craftsmanâs GT5000 (26hp 54" deck)

I am not pulling or plowing anything just cutting over 2 acres with a slope (some parts about 45% sloped).

One tractor is 23 hp with 24"x12" rear wheels
One is 27 hp with 23"x10" rear wheels.
The Craftsman is 26"hp with 23"x10" rear wheels but goes 7.5 mph

They all have the hydrostatic transmission and 54" deck.

I have heard that Craftsmanâs and Husqvarna are made by the same company, not sure if that is true.

Is there a big difference between 23hp and 27hp (horse power)? I currently have a 17.5 hp that is not good on the slopes.

Since they are very similar, should I be looking a hp, speed, tire size, or brand?

Thanks for the replys.

Answer
You WILL notice that HP difference on slopes. Also the bigger the rear tires the better. I wouldn't consider its speed whatsoever. Even with big fancy lawn mowers you have to go pretty slow to get a good cut.

Is it possible too recieve carbon monoxide poisoning whilst mowing your lawn?

Justin

Its proven that emissions from lawnmowers do emit carbon monoxide but is it possible too get poisoned outdoors while mowing? i usually wear a mask while mowing but many many people dont,

Answer
Unless you're wearing a gas mask, it's not going to help with carbon monoxide. And yeah, I think you could get a mild reaction from that stuff. I mean especially if you're a gardner and do it all the time. Once a week mowing just your lawn, it is doubtful.

What are your symptoms?

Reports about those noxious fumes emitted from gasoline lawn mowers are indeed true. A Swedish study conducted in 2001 concluded, âAir pollution from cutting grass for an hour with a gasoline powered lawn mower is about the same as that from a 100-mile automobile ride.â Meanwhile, the 54 million Americans mowing their lawns each weekend with gas-powered mowers may be contributing as much as five percent of the nationâs air pollution, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

How many residential lawns in USA or Canada? Any clues appreciated!?

PictureCha

Seeking statistics on number of residential lawns also residential driveways in either USA or Canada.

Answer
don't have exact answer you want but here are some facts

It has been calculated that the average American lawn receives four
times the volume of chemical applications as an average farm field.

25 percent of the air pollution in the state of California is generated by two-cycle engines, primarily lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and other lawn care machinery

Americans now devote about 40,000 square miles to lawns (more than we use for wheat, corn, or even tobacco)

America has 58 million lawn owners

Americans mow 31 million acres of lawn every year. It takes 300 million gallons of gas and 1 billion hours to complete the chore. And for this privilege they will spend $17.4 billion on everything from pesticides (70 million pounds) to lawn tractors.

turf is the largest irrigated crop in America and 5,000 new acres are planted daily.

My lawn mower stopped running while I was mowing.?

Dylan Adki

I was mowing my lawn today and about 20 minutes in my lawn mower stopped running. I checked the gasoline first thinking I might not have filled it up all the way and it was fairly low. After filling the gasoline up all the way I tried starting up the engine and it turned over but wouldn't start. I then checked the oil to find that the oil was low. It was not empty so I don't believe it was running with no oil but I'm not 100% sure that it wasn't too low for the engine to get any of the oil. I filled the oil and I believe I over filled it so I changed the oil completely and put all new oil in. The mower still will not start. The only other things I can think of are the spark plug and the filter, but since the mower was running just fine before it leads me to believe that those are not the problem.

Answer
It's the plug Dylan, it may have gotten grounded on something. The connection may have loosened. It may need cleaning. But, it is, the plug. Take it out, clean it. put it back in. squeeze the connection tighter. Prime x 5 Try again.

Should I replace my lawn mower or get it fixed?

Matteo M

My 7-year-old Toro self-propelled lawn mower's cord is off so the self-propelled part doesn't work, the engine will no longer start (it wasn't fully engaged last time I used it... it was running slow and loud with a lot of smoke and used a lot of gasoline). The last time I got my mower serviced it was over $100. The newer model Toro is $350-$400.

At this point should I just buy a new one with all those problems?

Where can I purchase a Toro SUPER RECYCLER lawn mower for $400?

stp24core

The SUPER RECYCLER is more powerful than the "RECYCLER" and I can't seem to find one under $500 ($400 plus tax is my budget). I would prefer to pick up at a retail location (close to zip code 60175) but wouldn't hesitate to purchase online if need be. I would not have interest in a used model at this time. Any help is appreciated!
Found an entry level one for $429 (without the "Personal Pace" but elected to go with the upgrade for $499).

The problem is they are priced at 450 - 500 bucks. Nobody is going to sell them cheaper. Here are some online place where you can buy them in your price range.

Can you help with Lawn Mower Maintenance?

scotty_doe

I am a lawncare newbie (I've lived in an apartment the majority of my life). Now that spring is here, I need to get my lawn mower ready. How do I change the oil?? Sharpen the blades? What to use for an oil catch pan? I feel stupid for asking these questions, but I was never taught this growing up. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Answer
Quick and dirty for lawn mower tune ups:

1. Pull the spark plug. If it's fouled, replace it. Better yet, replace it anyway, as they only cost a few bucks.

2. Unscrew the air filter cover (or unsnap it, if it snaps into place) and check to see how dirty it is. If it has a foam element over it, clean the element with water, dry it, then squeeze some motor oil onto it and wring it out (it should seem mostly oil free, but still tacky). If the air filter itself is dirty, replace it. IMPORTANT: If the air filter looks even slightly dirty, replace it. The particles caught by the main filter are too small to see by the naked eye, so if you see particles, it is over-dirty.

3. Drain and replace oil:
- The drain plug will be square, so you can't miss it. It is normally located on the lower side of the engine (riders) or the underside (push). Simply unscrew with a sizable pan under it. Riders have 2-4 quarts of oil, Pushes have just over 1 quart normally.
- Once the oil is drained, replace the plug and fill it with the recommended oil (riders normally take 10W30, pushes normally take SAE30). Every brand has different specs, so look in your manual! Do not listen to people who say "every mower takes ..."
- Do not over fill the oil! The oil dipstick will tell you if it should be crewed in or not while checking oil level. On screw-in types, if you do not screw it in while checking the level, you will drastically overfill the crankcase and cause the engine to seize up in short order. (made a LOT of money from that one)

4: Sharpening the blades: Don't do this yourself! If not properly balanced after sharpening, you will destroy your spindle bearing (riders) or destroy your engine crankshaft (pushes). Not to mention sharpening a blade is not as easy as it looks. The angle must be right and mulching blades require steady hands to avoid damaging the blade beyond repair.

5: General lube/cleaning:
- Spray your mower down with degreaser and let it sit for a few minutes. Spray off with a jet water nozzle.
- Drip oil anywhere a hinge or cable opening resides.
- Grease anywhere a grease nipple resides (you need a grease gun for this). Many riders have them, almost no pushes have them. If you do grease, grease until grease comes out of an opening. Greasing a few shots does not cut it.

6: Check belts for damage. Replace if any damage is seen, especially dry rot! Belts take a lot of torture, but a damaged belt will fail in short order and sometimes a bit of damage to the mower or you upon failure.

7: Check tire pressure. Fill tires to nominal PSI stated on the side of the tire. e.g.: Different tire pressures in the rear end of a rider can (and will) kill your tranny. Sometimes the little things make a big difference.

8: Prior to storage, always put fuel stabilizer in the your mower and run it for a few minutes. Many people will say "run it out of gas to prevent fuel clogs", they are ignorant! No fuel = no lubrication of the rubber gaskets in the carb, which = dry, cracked gaskets in the spring and a complete carb rebuild in your future. PS: Carb rebuild kits cost very little, but let your mechanic do the job if you are not knowledgable in the area, as a properly tuned mower will add years, if not decades to its lifespan.

Doing your own mechanic's projects are fun and instantly rewarding when done properly. Why let your mechanic get all of the gratification? Do it yourself and save a few bucks at the same time, when appropriate.

Have fun!

Can I put regular 10w30 motor oil in my lawn mower?

Ashley

Will it mess up my lawn mower?

Answer
I use Castrol GTX in all my yard tools. The only differences between a $2.50 quart of GTX and $6.95 pint of the correct stuff is price and quality. GTX is less expensive and its a real formulation that will clean better than the "Correct" stuff.

Now if you are mixing it with gasoline for a 2 cycle engine the exact opposite is true. The additives that make GTX good as a motor oil make it very bad as a 2 cycle oil. Stick with straight oil designed for mixing in 2 cycle engines.

riding lawn mower?

MTD lawn tractor with auto transmission quality?

Rob B

I am looking to by an MTD riding mower with an auto tranny(not hydrostatic). The owner says it works by increasing the tension on the drive belt to make the unit speed up.
I know MTD has a spotty reputation, but I am mostly concerned about the auto drive system. Does anyone have any info on these mowers? Do they hold up well? Any problems?

Answer
The AutoDrive system is not the best system for propelling a lawn tractor across the yard, but they do work. Provided you don't attempt to pull anything over 100 pounds (US) with it, and change both drive belts yearly. The tractor should outlive the deck by several years.

Hand Push Lawn Mower - Should I buy one?

I hate mowing the lawn - hate it, hate it, hate it! A friend recently suggested that I should try a hand push lawn mower, to remind me of a simpler time and because it might actually do a better job on my lawn too.

Any hand lawn mowers out there available to give me some advice?

Answer
I personally prefer hand push lawn mowers to electric hover mowers. I feel more pride in my lawn once it's done, knowing that I've achieved that with what I'd consider simpler and more traditional tools. With that said, its not for those who are afraid of a little exercise as it can be hard work.

Ideally you want a mower with a 20" frame as it cuts down on the effort you have to put in and gives the best results on your lawn (in my experience).

Have a look at the Scotts 2000 model (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RA3E?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00004RA3E) - this one in particular has good quality parts, unlike cheaper models I've tried in the past, that will give you good results first time and will last as long as you do!

You'll also be saving money on electricity/gas, which is always a good thing.

Happy mowing!

Who makes a lawn mower worth its money anymore?

KK88- My n

Its seems everyone is turning to MTD junk, the only one I can think of that makes a quality product is Kabota, who else makes something the wheels wont fall off within two seasons.
you can buy somehing from lowes that looks good but the spindles just fall apart from what ive seen.

And on a side note where is Kabota made, japan?
Nerdy, I really do lol
actually I dont cut my own lawn (renting pwns!)
myut my boss asked me and it really got me thinking because 90% of the stuff out there is junk!

Answer
Kabota is Japanese. Honda, Snapper and Lawnboy all make high quality lawn mowers, but you won't find them at Lowes or Home Depot. If you want a good lawn mower you are going to need to find a shop that sells commercial equipment. Take lots of money with you, those things are expensive.

Electric lawn mower help?

brennanpol

I just purchased a Black & Decker cmm1200 cordless mower, which uses a lead acid battery.
I was told that to prolong the life of the battery, I should completely use up the battery, and then only charge it again the night before I use it.
Can someone confirm this, and provide more details?
- thank you

Answer
The reason they tell you to charge it the night before is to keep you from OVER charging, which can severely cut short the life of the battery.

My husband bought an electric lawn mower because we live near the beach and we were thinking 'green'. He loves it, but probably wouldn't if we had a larger lawn because it probably wouldn't mow a yard much larger than ours.

And yes, on the 'use up' the battery, which is also a bit of a pain at times, because if you have half a charge, it's better to use it up, than to recharge it to a full charge. He's had to pause a lawn mow because the charge goes out in the middle.

All in all, tho, it's a clean mow, it works perfectly, and it's much quieter than gas, which is great here at the beach because you don't hear a bunch of people mowing lawns on the weekend;)

We have the Earthwise Mowers - I think it's 20". We got it online at greengardentools

this might have additional information, but you'll probably be just fine by not overcharging and depleting the charge.

Hope that helps.

I have 80 sq.mtr. uneven grass lawn, whats the best lawn mower to use, electric or petrol ?

donald f

Answer
Assuming that this yard isn't 1X80 m, I'd think that an electric model would be great. The thing to look for is if a cord will reach to the ends of the yard.

Electric have several advantages -- they start every time, and don't have emissions issues like their petrol counterparts.

i need help finding a perfect lawn mower?

hattrick92

okay this is the first year im mowing my lawn and i need some advice about what lawn mower i should get please tell me ur feed back on the ones you have and the one you think i should get
thank you

Answer
It's impossible for anyone to advise you without knowing more details such as your budget, the size of your lawn, whether you want electric, battery or petrol mower, the size of the shed you have available to store it in etc.

Look up 'Garden Machinery' in the local Yellow Pages. Go along to your nearest store and discuss your needs with the experts there, view and handle some of the mowers. You don't have to buy from them, but if you do, and something does go wrong, you'll have more backup than if you buy online.

1989 Ford Yt18h Lawn tractor has no spark?

Brandon

I parked this tractor in the spring of 2013. I went to go start it and move it out of my way and it wouldn't start. I found that I wasn't getting any spark so I went to an identical parts motor and swapped out the ignition coil. It still doesn't have spark but it turns over so one would think that all of the safety switches are operating properly. I removed the 12 volt ignition coil wire from the coil and jumpered 12 volts from the battery to the ignition coil to bypass the key switch and it still didn't work. What else could it be? Thanks.

Answer
I am sure you have a safety switch problem. You can try to start it by jumping directly to the starter however the ignition system is on a different circuit. Seat switches, PTO (Deck) switches, an sometime clutch switches can be out of adjustment, broken etc. I had one of those mowers, it maybe the electrical mower switch, it operates the deck, but will not let the engine start if it is on or broken. These engines have magnetron ignition coils which are simply grounded out to shut down the engine. Somewhere that circuit is grounded out and not letting the ignition operate properly.
