What to look for in when purchasing a lawn mower?

Cochy

We close on our first house March 30th and we are total newbies to homeownership. One of our first purchases should be a lawn mower. The house sits on just over a third acre. What should we look for in a lawn mower? Not even sure where to start. What makes a good lawn mower? Is a rider worth it?

Answer
Depends on your preference. If you want to walk, a push mower would be fine. If you want it to be a little quicker and easier, a rider would do. You should also know what type of grass you have. St. Augustine grows faster and needs cutting weekly during season, while bermuda would grow a little slower, and zoysia even slower. You may need to mow weekly, or every 2 or 3 weeks depending on the grass. The less often you have to mow it the more a push mower makes sense. And with some grass types, such as zoysia or rye, you do want to use a catcher to bag the clippings.

I'm planting zoysia grass in Georgia, and my original lawn has a lot of weeds (real fat leaves).?

linktoterr

Will the new plugs kill out the weeds or can i use weed killer on the weeds while the zoisia is trying to take root and grow?

Answer
Make sure the label reads "kills the weeds and not the lawn" before you spray. That grass is pretty hard to mow. It's hard to push anything with wheels through it. I use a self propelled walk behind mower for part of mine and the rest of the half acre I use a riding mower. The roots are deeper than other grass and also very thick and tough. I never water mine.

my computer sounds like a lawn mower! What could it be?

Ashley H

When I turn my computer on it makes the most awful grinding noise. It only stays on for a very brief time, then shuts back off. It is 5 yr old VAIO. I am prepared to get a new one, but what in the world is wrong with this one?

Answer
A little more info would have gone a long way. From what you've said I could only guess that the hard drive is toast. The grinding noise is likely the head making contact with the platter. It's also known as a "head crash" it is physical and permanent damage. I see computers differently than many people who sell and repair PC's. To me, if you are happy with the PC (speed/performance) except for the current malfunction I say if it's under $200.00us to fix it go ahead and have it fixed. You can get a 160 GB hard drive these days under $100.00us which is likely way bigger than what it came with.

Its seems everyone is turning to MTD junk, the only one I can think of that makes a quality product is Kabota, who else makes something the wheels wont fall off within two seasons.
you can buy somehing from lowes that looks good but the spindles just fall apart from what ive seen.

And on a side note where is Kabota made, japan?

Kabota is Japanese. Honda, Snapper and Lawnboy all make high quality lawn mowers, but you won't find them at Lowes or Home Depot. If you want a good lawn mower you are going to need to find a shop that sells commercial equipment. Take lots of money with you, those things are expensive.

What is wrong with my lawn mower?

Daniel D

Ok, I'm trying to save money from buying a new lawn mower. I have a snapper briggs and stratton 7HP OHV lawn mower. It is about 8 years old. I had my serviced about 8 months ago, regular tune up. The oil is still good and leveled. The spark plug is a clear blue spark. I emptied and cleaned the fuel tank out. I've been using fresh fuel with a fuel stabilizer. It ran fine for a while. Then it started "acting up". It would run for 30 minutes then die. Then it would start again after priming it then die. So I took apart and cleaned the carburator, jets and everything in it. Gaskets are fine. So the next day I was excited that I cleaned the carburator and hoped my mower would run with no issues. I primed and it took about 3 - 4 pulls then started. I was kind of disappointed that it took that many pulls but it started. It ran longer 40 minutes, sputtered then died. So I re-primed and after several pulls it started and I completed the job. Even though it runs, why does it die after a while? I'm running out of options and patience. Should I just buy a new mower?

Answer
Eight years? You got your moneys worth out of it. But it probably can be made to run properly. Those darn engines are so simple that if you get even a little compression, ignition and fuel they'll run. Hard to kill 'em.

What you are describing sounds like a heat issue. The hotter the engine gets the harder it is to get a proper air to fuel ratio. Remember that hot air is less dense than cold air. You may actually be running rich - as may be indicated by smoking (not oil smoke), or it might not even smoke.

If the engines cooling fins are not clear the cylinder may be over heating and expanding, causing a drop in compression. That's not REAL likely but it can be an indicator of other problems. You could have cracked rings, cracked enough to start but quit after warming up (excessively if that's the case).

Since you've described dismantling the carburetor I'll assume you are savvy enough to disassemble the engine to the point of removing the piston. If you can do that you may find worn or damaged rings that can be the culprit of your troubles. Check the cylinder to make sure it's not excessively worn either. If it has an iron sleeve that's good news; you can hone the cylinder. If not - you would be honing aluminum and probably wasting your time. New rings will likely be in order, and you may want to get over sized rings and properly size them to the cylinder. Normal ring gap is 0.004 inch to 0.007. After honing the cylinder, I'd install the new rings into the cylinder without the piston to get the proper size. If they need to be cut, nearly any automotive supply store should have a ring file. If you don't have feeler gages - get some, you'll need them.

After properly sizing the rings install them onto the piston in their proper position and orientation. Pay careful attention to how the old ones came off and make sure you put the new ones on the same way. Be sure to tighten the end cap onto the piston properly. I'm not familiar with the proper torque, but with a good set of wrenches and a good sense of feel, tighten them. Then bend the locking tabs back over the heads to prevent them from coming loose.

Reassemble the engine. At this point I'm thinking you may have wanted to remove the valves and clean out the carbon. Not a bad idea, but putting those pesky spring clips back in position is rather difficult. You could easily expect to spend an hour just trying to put a single clip back on. THERE ARE proper tools for that job but I've always managed to do it with a screw driver a pair of needle nose pliers and plenty of light to see what I'm doing. Otherwise, if you decide to leave the valves alone, probably not a big deal.

Make sure the cam and crank timing marks are properly aligned, and you didn't loose the valve lifters. They're not held in with anything other than being trapped between the valve stems and the cam. New gaskets would also be a wise move at this point, along with new crank seals. If you're doing that much work why not do it all.

After reassembling the entire engine, make sure there is nothing left loose or left over. There ARE NO OPTIONAL parts. If it was there to start with it should be there when you finished.

For my money, a machine that old, better off donating it to someone who has the time and desire to fix it because they don't have the money for a new machine, and buy yourself a new one. They're not THAT expensive.

Good luck.

Hand Push Lawn Mower - Should I buy one?

I hate mowing the lawn - hate it, hate it, hate it! A friend recently suggested that I should try a hand push lawn mower, to remind me of a simpler time and because it might actually do a better job on my lawn too.

Any hand lawn mowers out there available to give me some advice?

Answer
I personally prefer hand push lawn mowers to electric hover mowers. I feel more pride in my lawn once it's done, knowing that I've achieved that with what I'd consider simpler and more traditional tools. With that said, its not for those who are afraid of a little exercise as it can be hard work.

Ideally you want a mower with a 20" frame as it cuts down on the effort you have to put in and gives the best results on your lawn (in my experience).

Have a look at the Scotts 2000 model (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RA3E?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00004RA3E) - this one in particular has good quality parts, unlike cheaper models I've tried in the past, that will give you good results first time and will last as long as you do!

You'll also be saving money on electricity/gas, which is always a good thing.

Happy mowing!

lawn mowers?

THERESA LE

I cant decide which mower to purchase. I want to know rear wheel vs. front wheel, and how good are personal pace mowers. Im considering a toro.

Answer
Since you are considering a self propelled mower, I have found that stopping a rear wheel drive requires disengaging the drive wheels (may be as simple as releasing a lever, but still an active motion) while stopping a front wheel drive is as simple as lifting the front wheels off the ground (pushing down on the handle raises the wheels, the same action you use to turn the mower), the wheels still turn but don't pull the mower.
Unless you are interested in demonstrating your physical prowess, the self propelled mower makes the job a lot easier, especially in the tall weeds.
For features, consider a rear bagger unit which can bag the clippings, or bag left detached can mulch the clippings.
Also think about starting options -- look for an easy start (push a primer bulb 5 times and pull the starter cord) or an electric start (battery or 110v) which takes the muscle out of it.
Or if you have a small plot, consider the new cordless electrics which are lighter, no starting, and "green".

Bin There, It is helpful to read the question and who is posing it. I could be wrong, but I somehow don't believe that THERESA LE V will be begging her wife for a new one. . .

who invented the gas-powered lawn mower engine?

The Trifor

I udnerstand that the push mower was invented in the 1800's, but I want to know who invented the gas-powered engine that we see in use in today's mowers.

Answer
The engine we see on lawn mowers today wasn't exactly invented. It evolved from motorcycle, marine and small stationary engines that have been in use since the beginning of the twentieth century. Mervyn Richardson didn't invent an engine, he built an engine powered rotary mower copied from a similar machine that was built by Lawrence Hall in 1948. Hall used a marine engine on his mower. Richardson's first machine was powered by a Villiers engine and Villiers started production of their small engines for other uses in 1911.

Comparing engine size in lawn mowers?

Chocolate

In terms of power, gas consumption, or any other considerations, is the difference between a model with 149 cc engine versus another with 190 cc very significant?
The 149 cc is $200; the 190 cc is $240. (US dollars).

Answer
The size engine on a lawn mower is based on the blade length more than anything else. The most common 149cc mower engine is a Kohler Courage, an efficient over-head valve engine used on 20 or 21 inch mowers. It comes in 3.8 and 4.8 HP versions. The most common 190cc mower engine is a Briggs and Stratton Quantum. It is an older design that used to be rated at 6.5hp, and now is just rated at 6.75 ft-pounds of torque. Being larger it is more often used on 21 or 22 inch mowers.

The 190cc will use more fuel, but will also cut more lawn with each swath. Gas mileage on mowers is not usually an issue, but the OHV Kohler should be marginally more efficient. The main consideration is the maintenance you do. Keeping the air filter clean and changing the engine oil periodically will lengthen the life of either mower choice.

I hope this helps.

LT180 Riding Lawnmower?

Tom K

what is the value of a LT180 Riding Lawnmower with 232 hours of use. 48" deck

Answer
Used lawnmowers aren't worth much. They are just not built for longevity. A top quality machine will last longer only if maintenance and cleaning have been performed religiously. Who do you know would give that much care to something like a lawnmower? Another thing to consider With a riding mower is that when it's worn out beyond repair,it's hard to get rid of it. I use a riding mower as a matter of necessity (5 acres). If I had a regular sized yard,I'd stick with a good walk behind mower-they are easier to maintain and last a lot longer.

what is the resale value of my john deere riding lawnmower?

Answer
Long time ago it might be something cool and expensive to have for a man's toy for his yard. Nowadays, you can get it from Lowe's home improvement for about a little over $ 1,000, and get a nice one. If you didn't have Lowe's charge card yet when you apply for it then you might get 10% off. The catch is pay off as soon as you could, and don't buy anything else with it. Then chances are you wouldn't come ahead with the deal. Enjoy your yard.

Can you start a riding lawn mower by going down a hill, then popping the clutch?

Anon Ymous

if i cant get my mower to start, can i ride it down a hill with the clutch depressed, then release? will that start it?

Answer
I'm not aware of any riding mowers that have a clutch (like a car). But if by some small chance that you do have a clutch, yes provided the problem is in your starting system and not your fuel or ignition system. Generally though, the transmission gearing is so high that damage to the drive train could occur, you could take a tumble over the mower or the wheels will skid and not turn the engine over.

Lawn mower emitting huge clouds of white smoke?

Q. So yesterday I was trying to mow up the hills on my lawn

( I have a hilly lawn)

and the lawn mower would all of a sudden start dying on my almost as if it was being choked by long grass

( there wasn't any long grass to choke it)

and emitting huge white clouds of smoke from the muffler I believe

(I'm not sure if it is the muffler, its the thing on the side of the mower by the primer with the holes in it)

The lawn mower sat outside all winter last season with the same oil in it.
The lawn mower seems to mow just fine on level ground, its just when it is going up hill with the engine drive that it will start dying and emitting the smoke.

I have a full tank of gas.

Answer
Most 4-cycle engines are designed to function on up to a 11 to 14 percent grade. If your lawn is very hilly, your probably trying to run the mower at too steep an incline and oil is getting forced into the cylinder.

Perhaps you should get a 2 cycle mower, like a lawn boy. 2 cycle engines can operate at any angle, even upside down, without harm, or decrease in function.

A 120 kg lawn tractor goes up a 21 degree incline of 12.0m in 2.5s. What power is shown by the tractor?

A

Why do you use sine in this question to figure out the vertical component of the force? Why do you not use the 12.0 m that's given because isn't that the displacement?
or why don't you use the horizontal component of the force??

Answer
Power = Work/Time.
The definition of Work = (size of Force) x (size of Displacement) x (cos Î)
Where Force and Displacement are vector quantities.

In 2-D physics the vector Force and vector Displacement are in the same plane so that there is a single angle = Î existing between them.
When Π= 90° or 270° the Work is zero.
When 0 ⥠Π< 90° or 270° > Π⤠360° the Work is > 0
When 90° < Π⤠180° or 180 ⤠Π< 270° the Work is < 0

So to answer UR question:
In order to calculate Work U can calculate it one of three(3) different ways:
In two of these ways, the angle Πis forced equal to 0°. The COMPONENT of either Force or Displacement is taken in the other's direction forcing Πin the Work formula = 0.

These are the TWO component ways to calculate the work it takes tractor to move up incline:
1) take either the Force (component) parallel to the Displacement or 2) the Displacement (component) parallel to the Force.

THIS is what is happening when the Displacement which is parallel to the incline and the Force which is the weight (mg) of the tractor in the vertical in direction.

1) (mg) (sin 21°) x 12.0 = work of tractor up incline
2) (mg) x 12.0 (sin 21°) = work of tractor up incline

The third way to calculate the work is just to use the Work formula as is:
3) (mg) x (12.0) x cos (90°-21°) = (mg)(12.0)(cos 69°) = work of tractor up incline
comment: this 3rd way may be more difficult in that the value of Î must be defined

What is the best riding mower?

Adam

My dad and I have been mowing some lawns commercially on the side for the past 7 or 8 years. I have one job that is about 6" to 8" tall when we mow it and it is not like city grass, it's like grass that grows in the country. It is about 5 or 6 acres of that with little trees that try to grow in the grass. That yard takes about 5 or 6 hours of mowing each time. The rest of my yards are in town and a lot smaller. For the jobs I have right now I have been using a 2007 Cub Cadet Tractor mower, 24 horsepower, 50" cut that I bought this year and I works we'll but I bought it used and it already has some problems. I recently narrowed down my selection to a mower with 24+ hp and a 42" + cut zero turn mower under $3,500. It has to be durable and be able to do this job and not fall apart. I was looking at the 2013 Hustler Raptor (23 hp Kawasaki engine, 54" cut with a really strong deck and build for $2,899) and a Bad Boy MZ Magnum (27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor and a 54" deck built also really strong for $3,499) I would much rather have more hp but I heard someone say that the Kawasaki motor runs so much better, but is it as powerful as the 27 hp Briggs and Stratton motor? Any suggestions on other ztr mowers and and answer to this question of which one would be better for my job(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer
That cub is a hard mower to beat. I think I would look and see how much to repair it first.

how will 2013 camaro zl1 work with bad gas (87 octane)?

we only have 87 octane where i live and im thinking about buying a 2013 camaro zl1
dont tell me its a bad idea i'm doin it anyway so the question is
will the knock sensors make it adjust to this level (even though it will lose some performance) and if not what are my options here to make it run smoothly .
thank you :)

Answer
Unfortunately, regular fuel in the good old USA now contains up to 15% ethanol. The asker must live in the corn belt to be stuck with nothing but regular. (IA, NE, KS)

The facts are that there is no such thing as leaded fuel anymore. It is illegal for suppliers to sell leaded fuels. You should be able to get premium that has NO ethanol in it. You can also purchase octane boosters.

The biggest problem with ethanol is that when it sits for a few years in a carburetor, it causes corrosion. Gone are the days when grandpas tractor could be left sitting in the barn for 20 years and started back up without a problem. Haven't you noticed that when fuel for your lawn mower sits over the winter in your gas can that it smells funky? That's because of the ethanol in it.

To answer your question, yes, the spark will be retarded to make up for the lowered octane fuel. It will not damage your engine. If your car has to sit for over a month, get something like Stabil. I helps keep the gas fresh. It works. I use it in my lawn mowers and boats. They all start up just fine in the spring.

riding lawn mower?

Q. How many HP do you guys suggest for a riding mower to cut a 1/2 acre of lawn, the yard has alot of rolling hills with a few fairly steep climbs.I was thinking Husqvarna, what do you think?

Answer
Husqvarna makes the Craftsman mowers. MTD makes Cub, White, Troy-Built, Yard man, Yard Machines, Bolens, and the new Toro tractors. The John Deeres in Lowes and Home Depot are made to last 250 hours and be tossed. That is all the "discount" brands.

If you are looking for a mower go to a dealer, even if its John Deere. The dealer can service the machine after the sale. Most will even deliver for free. They know the machines and the feature that will work for your conditions and situation in your yard. You are going to talk to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about, and not someone who will be in paint tomorrow.

I would recommend a Snapper of a Simplicity. Simplicity has a mower called the Regent that is 18 HP with a 38" deck, and sells for $1999. You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

attaching the idler arm on my lawn mower?

Teddy Tile

while mowing the grass this weekend, the idler pully on my 48 inch deck craftsman lawn mower exploded (pully broke). i was able to get a new pully, put it on the deck, and reassemble it....but, i cannot figure out where the spring attaches thats on the idler arm. one end of the spring is attached to the idler arm, and the other end goes somewhere on the deck BUT I HAVE NO CLUE WHERE. could someone please explain it? assume im standing behind the deck looking towards the front.

thanks in advance! all tips and ideas welcome!
i did check the parts manual, but it doesnt show what it hooks onto...it only shows the spring.

Answer
Okay, this is quite an easy fix and the spring attaches to a small pole next to the left hand pulley (as you're sitting on the mower) and to the rear of the pulley cowling. The way to attach the spring is to get a 3/32/ inch steel rod and make a hook at one end and a means to grip at the other (handle) and slip the hook over the spring and pull until the spring is over the bar, then tap the spring down onto the riser bar then release the hook.

lawn mower only runs with choke open?

musicislif

first of all, before i diagnosed this as being the issue, i completelty dissasembled the whole engine, and reassembled it. Ive cleaned the vlaves thoroughly and i grinded the exhaust valve just a hare as i was pretty sure there was an issue with compression and via the info ive found online i thought that would cure it. but it still does the same thing it did before i did any work, which is only starting for 2-3 seconds IF i prime the hell out of it. but i recently found that if i keep the choke wide open it will run, and run good. but as soon as the choke is closed to normal position, it dies.

and yes, ive replaced the needle, spring, and seat in the carb and have made sure that the jet in the hex bolt is clean. this pariticular carb works just fine on my other identical mower (4.5hp tecuseh), so i have to doubt that the issue lies within the carb.

the only thing else i can think of is a possible air leak somewhere, but all of the gaskets looked just fine and intact when I put everything back together. COULD this issue be a symptom of an air leak???

Any Ideas or thoughts will be much appreciated. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!
in response to mustangers answer....im a little confused. if the choke is left "open" while using the mower, allowing maximum amount of air in, this seems like it would cause a lot of unnecessary wear on the engine, not to mention a waste of gas. wouldnt this be like revving the engine non-stop?? it makes more sense to me to let more air in in order to start it and get it going, then back it off to a normal idleing speed. im only cutting the grass here, not racing it........That is how i position the choke when using the other identical mower, and it works fine that way.

And if im wrong (which i may very well be) the engine should still run, if not start, with the choke in the closed positon which it is not doing. Thanks again everyone!

Answer
Well, you've got the choke open and choke closed idea backwards. Choke open is the normal running position. Choke closed closes of the air supply and puts more gas into the engine.

Now to answer the question, I'll bet if you go get a $4 carburetor diaphragm gasket, the engine will run just fine. Have you checked the key in the flywheel? Sometimes they will be partially sheared and it throws the ignition timing off. But I am thinking it is definitely an air leak issue. Maybe the tank has a crack in it where the carb screws on? I have seen that before and the cracks can be hard to see. One way to find it if you want to go through the trouble, get some india ink (art supply stor will have it) and put on the suspected area of the crack, wipe it off and put some baby powder over the entire area. The baby powder will draw the ink out of the crack and it will show up plain as the nose on your face. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the head gasket is not sealing.

If and when you do find out what is going on, please update. Interesting question.

How do you rate Honda Shine bike (in India) in these fields.......?

Quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less?

dmg1969

I have been looking to buy a lawn tractor since we just bought a house with a little over a half acre of grass. I have mowed it once with a push mower and won't do that again.

Can anyone recommend a quality lawn tractor for $1200 or less? I do not need a zero turn or anything fancy like that.

I was looking at the Troy-Bilt Pony 17 HP, 42 inch cut. However, it looks to me to be the exact same mower as the Bolens and the Yard Machines...all made by MTD. I found a website which pretty much rated them as junk.

I was considering a Craftsman from Sears, but all but the more expensive ones have a manual transmission (stop to change speed).

I have considered used, but am not thrilled about going that route when I can buy new for not much more.

Answer
John Deere has always made great lawn tractors and highly rated in COnsumer Reports. The same can be said for Toro. Check them out at your local Home Depot or Lowes.

Better to buy a new or used lawn tractor?

Donna C

We only have about $1000 to spend and we own an acre of land (grass). We primarily need the tractor to cut the grass, but I supposed it would be nice if we had the option of buying a leaf sweeper attachment and/or small trailer attachment in the future. I'm not sure if it would be better to buy a new tractor, or go for a used one in a better brand. What do you think? Thanks!

Answer
Unfortunately, $1000 will not buy a quality lawn tractor new. The $1000-1500 units will cost you more in the long run. Your best option would be to check dealers in your area for used quality units with possible limited warranty. Many dealers refurbish units they get in on trade and sell at large events in the spring. Some brand names are Ariens, John Deere, Toro, Wheelhorse, Husquvarna..Kubota. Don't get lured into big name, popular price point at Homecenters because some of the big name brands like John Deere are not made to the same quality as the equipment dealers. They might look identical but plastic hoods are used instead of steel, many have no grease fittings, plastic axle bushings are used instead of brass.............Pick up the leaf sweeper, garden cart....on Craigslist for your area. Put the limited funds into good used unit before buying any accessories.

Trying to build a car...I need help!!!!?

anonymous

I'm a junior in high school and i've always wanted to build a car and i decided that i wanted to start doing that now. I'm trying to find a place where i can buy all of the pieces that i need including engine, doors, exhaust pipe, mirrors, etc. I'm also trying to find it for a reasonable price. I appreciate any help that I get.
subwoofer: do you know of any websites where i can find all of the parts for one car at the same place?

Answer
Whoa!!! before we take this trip let's see where we want to wind up.
Example: Did you go for 'track' in school? First you had to learn to walk...then graduated up from there. Have you ever owned or driven a go-cart? Have you ever watched lawn-mower races?
Just like learning to walk...start out slowly & gain experience by practice. Exercise your imagination.
Read, Read, Read. Pick up a Popular Mechanics mag. Look in the small ads in the back. You may be able to buy plans for a 4 wheeled pedal car. They have ones made with bicycle wheels. Build one to experience how the steering design effects it's derivability. You'll appreciate the effects of gearing ratio changes. You can improve it's ride, handling, steering & braking by changing it's design slightly. When you're satisfied, ad an engine. Get an old worn out engine (cast iron from a garden tractor) & rebuild it. The clutch can be from a 'V' belt tightened by a spring & released by your new clutch pedal. At this point you'll be so involved (driven) that you won't be able to sleep at night. By driving it & altering its design you'll develop the 'feel' of what works & how. Cars are like people. They're all just a little different. You are. Most guys your age only knows where to put the gas & ignition key in & they never thought any further than that. A car is the biggest expense in your future. Understand it. NOW is the time. You have the Internet to do research on. You pump iron to make your arms work better. Think about the muscle between your ears. Exercise it to help IT work better. Buy a small MIG welder. Learn to weld. Pick up some old bikes at a flea market for parts. Look at go kart cataloges for parts that may work. If one of your friends think you're funny, ask him to see what he has built.
Been there-done this. I'm an old motor head. I thought America's 'Special' people had gone to sleep or were all brain dead. I'm glad to see that America lives. Never give up! Give'em hell.

PS: Do they still have a site 'HowStuffWorks' ? Hint.

Are older cars better than new cars?

Master1992

Hi I'm thinking of doing my driving test and I like old cars but I'm not sure if when I buy a car if I should buy a new car or an old low mileage car because I have heard that old cars break down easily and are expensive to get parts for, please help, thanks, PS I also like the new Fiat Panda and some new cars, thanks.

Answer
The "Panda" is obviously going to be a "bear" to repair.

New cars need new parts to repair them"New" meaning rare. And it is going to have to be done by a certified technician in a shop full of equipment (they don't call them mechanics anymore and yet the car is mechanical). No longer can you change the oil and filter and spark plugs.(they are trying to get close to it).
Older cars- there is many of them out there and there are parts for them sitting on shelves gathering dust. There are companies making "knock off parts" that are similar to the factory part but don't have the official stamp so are sold for less and yet do the same job just as well.
New cars don't have the competing knock off's to contend with so charge what they like for the part(and it is pricey when you get it from the dealer).
So you got to ask yourself "honestly" do I like to do mechanics" or do I like other stuff instead. If mechanical stuff is in your blood, you will have already destroyed /or semi fixed several mechanical alarm clocks, pocket watches, lawn mower motors, bicycles and the like before you get your first car. So you already have a selection of mechaic tools(sockets, wrenches and the like); instead of woodworking tools or electronic repair tools(mind you cars are getting more electronically controlled-so that ain't bad to know)
Old cars - new cars //they still need mechanics/wrenchers/grease monkeys. They call themselves technicians because the title pays better. So, if you are mechanically inclined, go for the older car. You didn't say how old, nor what type or brand.
There are good and bad every year. Some people are hard headed FORD owners - you know (Fix Or Repair Daily//or//Found On Road Dead). They have their good side and their problems. Chev's the same story....good and bad. Same for Chrysler/Dodge. Or European cars. The trick is knowing what their weak points are and asking yourself "can I live with that?"
Cars are still on the road that are from the 40's. Not too many as they are worth 5x''s their original price to collectors.
And others (newer) that were not costly nor will ever be more than a paperweight(or boat anchor or chicken coop) in value. They were "neat for awhile" but just didn't stay together for long(no matter how much care you gave them).
But at least with these cars you could work on them. Nothing technical. Parts replacement came from other similar cars found at the salvage yard with the part in better condition.(not broken or bent or worn out).
I mean look at the initial cost right off. You buy a new car - as soon as you leave the lot in it and go around the block you have lost a minimum of $2000.00(could well be higher): even if you want to bring it back to the same lot. It is a used car.
Buying a used car - while the original owner does not have any reason to buy it back at all, you, if you made a good deal and knew it was a popular make or model, could probably get your money back selling it to someone else.
But if you want to get a car to drive(and not resell it), again there are good used ones out there and genuine lemons. You have to kinda learn it as you go along.
All cars take maintenance(new or old). No car is maintenance free for life. There is no purpose in making that kind of car otherwise GM or FORD would go out of business. They make the cars to break down at a certain point.(usually around 100,000 miles or 10 years) mind you some are making parts fail sooner or later.
I have a new car. I don't want to look under the hood...as I know it will be hell. I have to pay big bucks for a repair manual(as it is the last thing made) and I can only get the dealer repair manual which may not be 100% owner friendly. You could be out in the middle of the "toolies" when the car goes for a shitter. Well you do not have a floor hoist or technical testing equipment out there.....and they do not give a "baling wire solution" to get you out of that situation. But that is what you need at that moment. With the older cars, there is more than 1 writer, accounting how they fix the car to keep it running. And you can find this information in the public library...meaning you could buy the edition you like at a bookstore.
You decide. The old car could well give you 30 years more(besides it being your first one, I know you are going to change to a different brand and a different model a few times before you hit 20. Everyone I sold was a runner in better condition or similar to when I got it. Didn't gain any, didn't lose any.

Honda, John Deere or Snapper for quality self-propelled gas lawn mower?

Craig Lee

I'm looking for a lawn mower for a house I just bought. The total area for the yards is fairly large (over 1/4 acre) and irregularly shaped. So, a corded mower is probably not a good option. Also, I don't think it's really big enough to justify a riding mower. The mower brands that seem to have caught my attention are Honda, John Deere and Snapper. I'm looking for a high end self-propelled gas lawn mower and was looking for any comments on these brands. Thanks for your input.

Answer
Snapper is a proven winner and parts are easy to obtain. John Deere has been around for a long time however, parts and quality can still be 'suspect'.
Honda is a great mower although I recommend pirchasing it from a genuine dealer (instead of Home Depot) as they're just not the same.

Battery powered lawn mowers/weedwhackers?

mike727

Why do the batteries in battery powered lawn mowers only work for like five minutes and then you have to charge them again? I want to quit using gas powered mowers, but I don't want to deal with wire clutter, nor deal with the hassle of having to charge the battery ten times while cutting my grass. When are they going to improve these batteries?

Answer
Not sure what quality of products you're investing in...

We bought a house and have both a battery operated mower and trimmer. The lawn mower I can do 3 or 4 times cutting the back and the front before charge. The trimmer I can do twice, but I have two batteries so I can just swap on the fly if it dies.

However...if you let your grass grow 'out of control' and try to cut it, it sucks the battery life. I found that out when returned from vacation.

What lawn mower should I get?

Eli

I'm going to start to mow my parent's lawn and don't yet have a lawn mower. I need one that is somewhat affordable but wont take much effort to use. I've heard that Hondas are great, but they are priced a little too high for me. I'm looking for more in the $200 - $300 area (or cheaper.) What do you think i should get. Leave some links please :P

Answer
I looked this up in consumer reports and they rated them like this 1) Lawn boy 10640 ($240) 2) Cub Cadet 11a-18mc $240 3) Craftsman 38909 ($220). 4) Husqvarna 6021p (200). The Husqvarna was rated the best buy. All these are just regular push mowers. All the self propelled are around 400 to 700 dollars.

Answer
You'll get most of your business from the elderly, and they'll probably have their own mower and tools. Put up flyers on bulletin boards at grocery and drug stores. Charge around $10 an hour or lawn, whichever comes first. It's pretty simple to do, ask the homeowner how they want it done and to show you how to operate their mower. You don't need a blower, but a trimmer comes in handy. You can get a second-hand mower if you want, $50 - $100 bucks, a little less for a trimmer, but you'll have to figure out a way to transport them. Ask the salesman how to operate it. Good luck.

i have a question i just bought house with 11.15 acres do any body know what is good lawn tractor f?

Dan U

Answer
Mid-size John Deere or Kubota with a belly mower, or something like a Skag Turf Tiger (http://www.scag.com/turftiger.html) or similar. A 60 inch mower deck would be the minimum I would recommend. You would be cutting roughly 3 + acres per hour..

3 point hitch, plows, disc, and tires for small lawn and garden tractors?

dennis_phi

I have 20 acres of land behind my house I can use for gardening and small livestock, such as chickens and rabbits. I am a welder by trade and I want to build a 3 point hitch for a 12 HP lawn mower to plow a large garden. I can do the fabracation but I would like to buy the plows and the disc and build the racks for them.
Does any one know where I could buy them and what size I should get?
The mower has 18" x 9.5" on 8" rims. I have enough room to put tires on it up to 24" X whatever, and I can cut the hub off the ones I have now and fab up hubs to fit the axles. Any ideas on where to get the tractor lugged type tires at a good price.
I am disabled and the check is very big so I need the cheapest things I can find that will work.
Hope some one out there can lead me in the rigth direction.
Thanks for the help.
I thank you all for your answers, but it doesn't seem anyone understood the question.
I understand the chance of tranny failure. I am or was a small engine mechanic for several years. I also know how to not punish it too much. I may plow only an inch per pass until I get what I want, and even if I do break it, I only paid $150 for it to start with and can replace it with a a used 18 HP lawn and garden for $300.00.
I admit that a tiller will do a lot better job than a disc, after it has been plowed and I very well may build me an attachment to hook a tiller up to the mower if the disc doesn't work, but I have used disc on a larger tractor in the past, after it was turned and it did well.
As far as the amount of land I want to work, last years garden was about twice the size of the first years. The only thing that slowed me up was being able to till as much as I wanted to.
I need to know where to get what I need at the best price I can get it at.
Thanks for the replies.

Answer
There should be some old farms around. They should have some of those old 2 and 3 bottom plows you can pick up cheap. I know we have 4 of the old ones on the farm here. Some PTO and some not.

Push (reel) mower and grass clippings?

White Pola

I use self-propelled mower. It cuts the grass into tiny pieces that fall back to the yard and decompose quickly, letting the nutruition back to the yard and redcue the needs for fertilizer.

Push (reel) mower is environmental friendly becasue it doesn't produce air and noise pollution. However, it doesn't cut the grass to pieces like the gas lawn-mower. Will it cause thatch problem if the grass left in the lawn?
This question really originated from a dicussion in the environment forum where people are asking how "green" a reel mower is. I am not planning to replace mine.

Answer
Thatch isn't cause by clippings, it is formed by a layer of dead roots and stems in an unhealthy lawn. The real mower should do just fine, as long as you don't wait until the grass is 6 inches high to mow it. I used one on my old lawn for several years and never had issues. I'd still use one, but I'm not about to try to mow an acre of grass with a push mower.

Lawn mower repair question?

BIKER DUDE

Typical Briggs and Stratton 6.25 HP walk behind mower. Hard to start and when I could get it to start it runs fine. After it gets hot it refuses to start. I took it partially apart today and did the basic things. Removed carb bowl. Made sure the valves in the bolt and the one running up were clear with a piece of wire. it wasn't at all varnished up. I cleaned the barely dirty air filter. Put a new spark plug in and gaped it properly. Cleaned the fly wheel with a light sand paper and also the contacts on the coil/magneto and they were a bit filthy. So naturally I figured I had this puppy whipped. I did manage to get it started and cut my grass. It didn't start nearly as easy as it should have. It took a lot of priming and a lot of pulls. After I cut the grass i let it set for about 20 minutes and tried to start it. after another round of about thirty pulls and some priming no go. it tries..so..I actually had it taken in for service last year because i was to busy. they said they replaced the coil/magneto. it did run OK until the the end of the season when the same crap started. Hard starts and no restart after use. The coil/magneto like i said was pretty filthy and I have a small yard. I cut around 14 to 16 times per year. About 1/8 acre. Is there a good way to bench test a coil/magneto? I hate to buy one for 30 bux and have the same problem. also it has good high test gas in it and I put a little gum out in it but the fuel system is clean and fine.
yea..also doesn't have the same oomph it had when it is running. Also a little miss. Well..it's going on 9'th year. average life span of a mower is 7 to 10 with proper care. The body and every thing else is in just such great shape. I don't think it's the carb. it's really clean and is getting plenty of fuel. I believe I'm down to the coil or possibly valve problems. and when I looked at how filthy that coil was I have a hard time believing it was replaced last year. I guess I should have looked. Of course it wouldn't hurt to mess with it some more. I'll just buy a new one and work on this one in my spare time. if I get it kickin good .. I'll sell it and recover some of my cash for the new one. thanks guys. A good used motor might be the answer if i can find one that will bolt up.

Answer
Had the same problem at one time, but instead of putting ??? amount of dollars into an old mower i just bought new .

I need a riding landmower trailer any body no where to get one for cheap.?

guyj45

i need a riding lawnmower trailer any body no where to get one for cheap. because i own a grass cutting bussiness and now i getting a lot of calls and i do not no where to get a trailer for cheap so i can carry my riding lawnmower around any body have any where ez 10 points.

Answer
Check Craigslist! I have had great luck with buying and selling things there. It is free to browse and free to post so people often use it to easily dispose of things they no longer need for a cheap price. Some people as you may imagine always try to get more than they should but you may get lucky and find a great deal from somebody who just does not want the trailer taking up the driveway or yard any longer. I got rid of mine that way! I sold it for next to nothing as I just wanted it gone. Good luck!

Lawnmower Racing | Pulley Ratio?

:MAKO:

What pulley sizes are recommended for a racing lawn mower? My lawn mower is already lowered, welded trans axle, new braking system, better tires, better steering, extremely durable belt, etc and all of those safety precautions so it can handle the high speeds. What are good pulley sizes for me to go very fast? I am hoping for 50+. Any suggestions?

Answer
I don't think you have any idea what it really takes to build a real racing ride, at least not a completive one and I don't mean that in a mean way. It takes a LOT of frame modifications, cart components and engines built especially for competition.

Forget the belts and pulley systems, they're the least reliable and most expensive. Instead, go with a 40 or 50 link chain and a Right angle gear box (RAGB). Special clutches for the engine gives you the ability to adjust slippage and pulling. The transmissions are usually 2:1 ratio meaning one turn in, two out. It does require a good deal of math to figure out ratios, or you can ask a racer already having a machine. Your engine rpm, wheel diameter and sprockets all have to work together and that my friend is a huge learning curve.

riding lawn mower?

You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

lawn mower exhaust?

carolina_t

The exhaust on my push mower snapped off today. I got the end bit out that screws into the mower, but the actual exhaust has snapped off. Would it be safe to still mow my lawn without it?

Answer
It will of couse be noisey so you should wear hearing protection. You also need to look at where the exhaust will go. You don't want the hot exhaust to blow on something that will burn or be damaged from the heat. My suggestion would be to fix it properly before you use it. You can get mufflers for most mowers at Lowe's, Home Depot, or even Wal Mart.

Home Depot and John Deere riding mowers?

Jules

I recently purchased a home and it has a huge lawn that needs to be cut. I've never purchased a lawn mower before, but knew I wanted a John Deere and I decided to go to to the Home Depot to price a riding one (I live in a small town, so this is the only big-box, hardware store in the area). Apparently, they only had (1) in stock (an LA105), but it was on their floor, but showed very slightly worn tires, and dust (probably when they drove on the floor). Anyway, as far as I was concerned, it wasn't exactly new (wasn't crated), but since it was the only one there, I asked if they would give me a slight price break (not much, maybe 5 or 10% off), and I would buy right now. I was rudely told "this is not a floor model, it was new.. no mower comes assembled, and John Deere actually has a service person come out to build and check it before they put it out". Does anyone know if this is true? I may be ignorant when it comes to buying a mower, but I find it hard to believe homeowners have to assemble a riding mower on their own if they don't buy the one sitting out on the floor. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
never mind home depo-- go on line and find your john deere dealer, as they will be for real,,

Can someone suggest a good lawn mower that I can buy at Lowes?

Vishal

I want to buy a self propelled lawn mower preferably gas.
Something that adjusts to my walking pace and has a bag (side or rear) Also can someone explain what the difference a side or rear bag would male.
My lot is a flat lot about 0.3 acres. My budget is around 400-600 dollars

Answer
Troy-Bilt $379.00
7.75 Torque 21" Self-Propelled Gas Mower
Item #: 303531 Model: TB340 XP

This is a very good mower where the self-propelled speed is determined by how fast you walk. Its a commercial mower at a home owner's price.

Rear bag verse side bag: Well first off its hard to find a side bagger these days, they're just not popular and here's why. Rear baggers were designed so that if you have several obstacles in your yard, (trees ETC...) you can maneuver around them from either side without changing directions, the down side is side bags are a little larger (not much). That's about it.

Lawn Tractor vs Good Hand Lawn Mower?

darrenm09

Would a lawn tractor be better to have or a good hand lawn mower for a 0.75 acre lot? new to the lawn mowing thing.

Thanks!
thank you all for your input

Answer
I highly recommend the hand mower.

TIME COMMITMENT:
I am able to mow my two acre lot with a hand mower in less than an hour, so mowing your .75 acre lot with a hand mower will be quick and easy. Using a lawn tractor wouldn't save you much time to mow a lot of your size.

PRICE:
Hand mowers are cheaper across the board. You can get a top of the line hand mower for $400, while a similar quality in lawn tractors will cost you at least $1200.

EASE OF USE:
Hand mowers are incredible simple machines; anyone can operate one with little instruction. Lawn mowers take considerably more skill and trial-and-error to be able to use.

MAINTENANCE:
This is where hand mowers truly shine.
- Hand mower parts are less expensive, from my experience. I've spent less than $30 on my hand mower, but a buddy of mine had to spend well over $100 repairing his lawn tractor less than a year after he got it when its engine failed.
- Because hand mowers are such simple machines, their parts hardly ever fail because so little goes on inside them. Lawn tractors are completely different beasts: they are essentially small, underpowered cars and thus A LOT can go wrong with them. In my mind, you should never need to worry about the transmission of your lawn mower going out.
- It's quick and easy to take a hand mower to a repair shop, but you need a large truck or even a trailer to bring a lawn tractor to a repair shop. That means more time and, if you don't have either a large truck or trailer, more money as you will need to rent one just to get it to the repair shop!
