What brand and model of 2008 or 2009 riding lawn mower is the most dependable for mowing a large yard?

best lawn mower at sears image

A Friend

Can you recommend a brand and model of a riding lawn mower that is safe, dependable and has a smooth ride. We have a large yard (2 acres) and my husband has had a back injury.

We have a tractor but need a riding lawn mower to cut grass around the house. Which tractor will hold up with heavy use and be comfortable to operate.

Answer
According to the first link below, the John Deere X304 is the best lawn tractor overall.

Second link is price...seems pretty typical though this particular model isn't at Lowe's. Didn't look at Home Depot.

We got an old, second hand Craftsman from a customer. That rider was used on MANY big lawns while hubby had his lawn maintenance business. It was used for 5-6 years before it quit. I wish it was still working!

Speaking only for myself, I'd look into a Craftsman. I'm not fond of Sears, but I loved riding it and miss her sorely as we now have 3 acres!

What company makes the best lawn mowers engines?

Timpala

I am looking for a new lawn mower and would like to narrow my choices down by the the company that puts the best and most reliable engines on their mowers. With that said, any suggestions for a rear self propelled walk behind mower would be great.

Answer
We've had several over the years and hubby likes his Husqvarna with the Honda engine the best of any he's had. We've tried them all and none of them lasted more than a few years. This one is standing the test of time; I bet we're going on a good 6 years now.

The Honda engines are quieter and have more power than most. We've had Sears, Yard Man, MTD and several others and this is the only one he's consistently been happy with.

I am thinking of getting the Toro cordless mower and worried about how it cuts thick grass. My yard has thick grass and it has a lot of moisture. I am curious how dose this mower do by it being cordless? Also if not this mower how about the Toro gas mowers like the ones with the pace self propelled systems with either electric start or blade brakes? thank you

Answer
If you are looking for a Toro mower, I would go with recommendations by Consumer Reports. They just came out with their latest reviews of the top lawn mowers for this year and several Toro mowers are on the list. But they are all gas-powered. If you have a large yard and thick grass, I'd go with the gas mowers as it's more powerful than electric mowers.

2011 Best Lawn Mower Recommendations by Consumer Reports:
http://www.tigerfdn.com/consumer-reports-recommended-lawn-mowers

Some of the Toro mowers mentioned are:

Toro Super Recycler Self-Propelled Mower 20092
Toro Super Bagger 20192
Toro Recycler 20333 (this was on last year's list as a "best buy" also)
Toro Recycler 2033

Best Brand of Lawn Equipment?

I'm looking to buy a gas mower and edger. What features are important and what brands are best without killing my wallet? The max I'm looking to spend on the mower is $300.

Answer
You can buy a decent mower at Home Depot for about $300- $350. It will be a rear discharge and be self propelled. Consumer Reports Magazine recommends the Toro Recycler 20332 in this price range.
$50 more buys a Toro 20333 or a Honda HRR216K7VKA which are similar but rated slightly better on ease of use All three of these were Best Buys in CR's May 2011 issue.

What should I look for in a lawn mower?

Sarah

I am needing to buy my first lawn mower, can anyone please tell me what I need to look for? I'd like a decent quality, but I don't need anything super-fancy, I would like it to be self-propelled of course, but other than that...

Answer
Self propelled, as you mentioned, is a big thing with me. Also, the horsepower of the engine. I wouldn't buy anything less than a 4.5 hp, and prefer at least a 6.5. I have had best luck with mowers having Briggs & Stratton engines. Also, the larger the swath of the mower, the less trips around the yard you have to make. Buy at least a 22-24 in. mower. If you have a yard on a slope, or an uneven yard, mowers with larger rear wheels may be better suited to your needs.

Good luck!

How fast could you make a lawn mower go and have it the blade still cut grass ?

Gavin

Like if you were to trick out like a racing lawn mower but not to that extent

Answer
If you make sure that you increase the blade speed along with the drive speed and use stronger, higher quality mowing blades it's possible to trick it out and actually have it mow decently.

You just don't want to increase the drive speed and have the deck speed stock or what you mow will like sh*t. Take my advice about the blades though, I have a friend that hopped up his mower but lost a stock blade and nearly killed a friend when the blade broke!

Have fun but be safe. Peace!

I don't want to spend thousands on a big mower or robot one. How can I attach a couple push mowers together so one is aheat of the other?

Answer
Jean Ann's idea was good, but even if that works (and you'll probably need to also bolt a stabilizing bar of some sort across the front and/or back to keep it from sagging in the middle), you won't be able to turn it properly.

Why not check classified ads, local bulletin boards, or craigslist for an affordable larger mower that you know works and is safe?

anyone own a small landscape buisness, how much to start it?

Dice K 12

How much money does it take to start a small one or two person landscaping buisness. this is without any college business credits. you figure one nice mower, leaf blower, weed wacker and all other necissary tools. how big a loan did you have to take out?

Answer
If you want to start a business you need commercial equipment. A commercial mower is a lot more than 2000. I recently bought a exmark turf tracer HP which isn't the biggest model made and it was about $6,000 When I bought a Kubota zero turn a few years ago it was 13,000 dollars. If you aren't doing commercial lots you don't need a huge zero turn. A walk behind will work fine with a stand on attachment so you don't have to walk. You have to locate a dealer that sells commercial mowers, you can finance the mower through them. If you want the best blower and weedeater you need to buy STIHL brand equipment. Our STIHL backpack blowers were 500 dollars and weedeaters were 2-300 dollars. Then you need your truck and trailer which could cost up to 60,000 dollars if you want a nice truck and trailer. I'd get a truck with a diesel engine in it, even though its more expensive the gas milage is better and they are a lot more reliable when you are going to be using them for heavy duty work. Then you need insurance which will be a few thousand dollars per year.

Lawn and Landscape work is a high demand industry. If you do good affordable work you will be fine.

Unless you already have contracts lined up you will need to advertise. People don't usually look in the classifieds first. They talk to friends/neibors who have had work done with a company and if that person was satisfied they will give the potential client your information and they will call you.

I have a steep hill where I have to cut the grass. Mixed gas & oil prevents motor to burn. If they still exist what kind or refer to the closest on the market

Answer
If the hill is so steep you can't use a 4 stroke push lawn mower I think you should get a really nice weed wacker. Most people use weed wackers on a hill that is really steep. Makes it safe too. Or just spray it with weed killer like roundup.

I'm looking to replace my old self propelled lawn mower. I got 15 years out of the old one. I want to get the same out of the next. I'm intrigued by these swivel caster front wheels on some of the rear wheel drive (RWD) self propelled lawnmowers. Do they really handle better around objects? How about straight line performance? How reliable are they compared to fixed wheels? Thanks.

how do i change the belt on a self propelled lawn mower?

Juls

it is a self propelled lawn mower but it has to be pushed. Assuming its the belt, how do i change it?

Answer
All lawnmowers are different but the principal is the same. A belt runs from the engine to the transmission that delivers power to the wheels. My mower ( craftsman) has a cover underneath and you first remove the blade then take off the cover and that's where the belt is. If your mower has front wheel drive its probably somewhat the same. Hope this helps a bit. good Luck

How often should I have my mower blades sharpened?

best lawn mower half acre on 04-16-2005, 04:12 PM #39
best lawn mower half acre image

aquanut

I recently purchased a new zero-turn mower and I was interested in knowing how often I should have my blades sharpened if I am going to be mowing multiple residences all summer long. Probably around 30 yards every 2 weeks or so for about 4 months.

Answer
You need to sharpen the blade ( or blades if you have more than one on the cutting deck) about every 15 times you cut a half acre. So if you were cutting 7.5 acres you should sharpen the blade every time you cut the lawn (since there are 15 half acres in 7.5 acres). This will speed up the rate you cut and reduce the amount of gas you use because you will cut faster and it will require less energy to cut the lawn.

Probably the best reason for sharpening that frequently is a dull blade will result in the grass drying out quicker and therefor a browning lawn. A sharp blade helps keep the lawn green and even.

I recommend having at least one or two extra blades so while you are using the blade on the mower the other blade can be sharpened at your leisure and installed readily when you are ready to change the blade.

Of course if you hit some large objects such as small rocks or sticks you may need to change the blade sooner than that.

How to clear out overgrown areas?

ashleyb1

My mother's backyard is VERY overgrown in some areas. There's also a pretty messed up koi pond in the backyard that I'm gonna have to trash. Anyway, all I have is a mower, a weed wacker, and my own hands to clean up the overgrown areas. Any tips? She's also giving me a budget to redo the backyard. Which is about half an acre. We live in New England so our weather's a bit unpredictable. Would it be worth it to put a new koi pond in? Also, could anybody help me with some ideas for the backyard redo? Thanks in advance!! :)

Answer
When I built my new house, I had to clear a lot of land. I had to rent a backhoe tractor to level some dirt piles. I then smoothed out some rough areas so I would be able to mow it when it was used as a lawn. Before I could mow the wooded, weedy areas, I had to clear it with a rake, sometimes a bit of shoveling, and a heavy-duty rototiller came in handy. There were rocks of all sizes strewn about. I hauled load after load of rocks in a wheelbarrow, out back where I had a giant rock pile hidden behind some trees. All this took intense labor over a year or so. Looks pretty good now. When you are all done with your clean up, you can decide if you wanna go to all the work of installing a fish pond. Remember, it requires more work to maintain a fish pond. In the meantime, you can get a copy of New Englander Robert Frost's book of poetry. He wrote a lot about such challenging projects.

Recommendations for a small riding lawn mower, simple yet sturdy?

Q. First time homeowner and have a big yard to take care of, so I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a small riding lawn mower that's simple to operate, but sturdy? Believe me, if a push one was good enought, I'd be asking about that, but with my hours during "season", I won't have the time, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for answering and have a great Sunday!

Answer
One of the most important things to look for in a ride on lawn mower is power. I have often seen people buy the smallest, cutest, cheapest mower only for it to burn out and die sometimes after one season. When you buy a ride on check to see it has enough power to carry you and mow the lawn with ease not just 'enough' power. Having said this you can get too large for your requirements and buy one that is so large it has the turning circle of a semi trailer. I would look at good brands with reputable motors, such as Briggs and Stratton or Honda. Most large brands such as John Deere have a full range of sizes from small to very large. Do your homework with the local dealers and get plenty of advice. Some dealers even offer test drives. Also let them know what type of grass/ height etc you are mowing and the finish you would like - bowling green, park or bush. If you are in Australia Cox or John Deere are good choices. If you are in another county you will have to check out what is available there.

I need help with striping my lawn and making it look professional?

Aztec

We have about 1 acre of land and we use a cub-cadet lawn mower. I have tried to stripe it but I cant get it to look like the pros. Is my technique wrong? Is there something i could make to pull behind the tractor to bend the grass down? That is what they do at the golf course. I mow it at about 4.5 inches. Any tips?

Answer
Stripes in grass work best on fine textured turf such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Bent or Fescue. If you are growing a turf that requires a mowing height of 4.5 inches such as St Augustine or Bahia, then striping is tougher.

Be sure the blades are very sharp. Mow often and make marks somewhere unobtrusive so that you are mowing in the same direction in the same place every time you mow. Mow often. It is the repetition of direction that eventually puts stripes in turf..

Reel mowers often have rollers behind them to prepare the surface for playing. The rollers should not be too heavy to prevent soil compaction.

Remember, the striping in turf is much more visible from above and on TV, you may have more striping than you can see from ground level.

Is the Simplicity Champion a good mower?

Bryan B

I have 2.5 acres, fairly flat land and am in need of a new mower. The Simplicity mowers have really grabbed my attention, but I have been unable to find anyone with many details about them.
I'm wanting a Zero-Turn mower, but have a limited budget.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Answer
I have owned two Simplicitys. I mowed 1.5 acres with it. The first one lasted 22 years. The new one is great. They've added a lot improvements since my first one. This one is now five years old and haven't had any problems. One thing I do like about my Simplicity is that it has rollers on the back of the deck so you can "stripe" the lawn like they do on baseball fields. Every once in a while I try a new pattern just for kicks--it makes mowing the lawn fun.

I also have a Simplicity snowblower. I've had it for 10 years without a problem except I had to replace the plastic bar at the bottom that rubs against the concrete but it was cheap and was held in place by two nuts and bolts.

All the Simplicitys are easy to work on if you like tinkering or you need to change the oil or clean the deck, etc.

How can I make a open heart surgery patient comfortable after surgery?

angela

My father in a few weeks will be having surgery to replace his aortic valuve and i will be taking care of him after. I wanted some advice for him and I on things that would make the recovery easier... I was thinking of buying him a recliner, my thought being getting in and out of bed may be difficult... Is he gonna have problems showering or dressing himself or will it just be a slow process? Maybe something to grip the clothes and pull them up? Any advice from caregivers and/or survivors would be greatly greatly appreciated

Answer
A recliner is nice, it is easier to sleep in an upright position after open heart surgery. Your father will sleep that way in the hospital for the week that he is there. You could also get a foam wedge pillow for in bed. That is what I used for 5 weeks after surgery. Getting out of bed or laying down positions is difficult as he can't use his arms due to a 5 pound limit.

You might want to experiment with putting a pillow under his head, and shoulders at home and in the hospital. When you lie back your shoulders pull back, and that can be uncomfortable. The first good night sleep without drugs I had was after adding pillows under the shoulders.

He may have trouble with spring loaded doors at places such as restaurants. There were a few restroom doors I couldn't open.

His upper stomach muscles are going to be a wreck for a few weeks. He will have trouble bending over. Putting socks and shoes on isn't harmful, but will feel painful for a time. If he leans back too far in a chair, can't use his arms to lean forward and his stomach muscle might not be able to pull him forward in the first 10 days after surgery. A helping hand on his back is useful at times.

Showering isn't a large issue usually. He will probably be able to do that almost like normal. Dressing also isn't an issue except for footwear. Button up shirts or tshirts, polo shirts made of stretchy cloth is easier to deal with, but normal tshirts weren't all that difficult either.

He won't be able to drive or even mow the lawn with a riding lawnmower. If he tries in the first 4 weeks he will put himself back into the hospital. I tried driving at 5 weeks. It wasn't easy. Also riding in a vehicle can make some people uncomfortable. The constant vibration can turn painful for some after a while. There is a big disagreement on this issue between patients as others loved going on long drives immediately after the surgery. Don't cause yourself more trouble, let him decide which category he is in.

Be mindful that he gets the exercise the hospital recommends. It is very necessary for a faster recovery. Get him into a cardiac rehab program if insurance will pay for it.

For the most part he will be able to do anything else. Think of his needs in terms of a five pound limit on his upper arms. He can't lift a gallon of milk, so get half gallon containers instead. If he is cooking, put the pans on the stove for him. How hard are the drawers to open that he might need access to?

And think of appointments after the surgery. Make sure they are scheduled as soon as possible. Before the surgery happens isn't a bad idea. He may have appointments with a cardiologist, primary care doctor, and physical therapy.

Be warned, if the surgery goes well he is likely to have more energy than you can remember him ever having. As time goes on he will be able to do more than he could in the past.

I apologize for any grammar errors. Off to bed I go. Good luck to you.

Taylor

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Both of those prices are for "homeowner quality" mowers. Meant to be used once ,maybe twice a week to mow a small to medium sized yard.
If you do use them for your mowing business, figure on only getting one summer out of them.
Comercial mowers are way more expensive than the prices you have posted, but will last several years .
Just starting out, try to find some good used commercial mowers. Go talk to your local mower shops, look on craigslist, look for mowers at auctions.

Am I getting the quality of a John Deere ride mower from Home Depot?

Eric

Ok so I was looking to buy a new ride lawn mower after earning about 2,500 dollars last summer mowing lawns (I am 14). My dad says our current crappy one is fine but it really sucks. I was looking at John Deere ones because i here they are good quality, on their website they were in the $10,000 range! Meanwhile, a John Deere from the Home Depot was $1,500 - 2,500 dollars. The 1,800 dollar ones i like looks the same on both websites, but is the Home Depot one as good quality as one directly from John Deere?

Answer
Ok I'm not sure how to explain this one but im going to try. I use my fathers husqvarna chainsaw one summer to make a little money on a farm I got a job on. I like it so much I purchase one from a store like lowe. come to find out its not the same quilty as getting it from a dealer. If you want a new mower for your lawn cutting its understandable but if pops will let you keep useing his save that money.

I know i definitely want self propelled but can't decide between front or rear driven? Looking at the following brands: Craftsman, Lawn Boy, Snapper, and Toro. I have found several models under $300 and would like to stay in this price range. Any suggestions on the brands listed? Any I might be leaving out? Very interested in easy starting. Funny thing is they all advertise this!

Answer
You may want to read the current issue of Consumer Reports Magazine.(May 2012) They have an article on lawn mowers and show what features are worth buying as well as rating a number of mowers and showing there features and prices. Of the ones you mentioned I would go with a Toro. It has more features and better repair record and performance than the others.

I would like to find a alternate form of our now styrofoam trays at school.
They would obviously need to be cheap in cost but something that could also be recycled. :]

Answer
If you cannot buy reusable trays for students - ask a company like DISNEY to buy them for you or someone. Try looking for grants.

If its because you can not wash them for some reason - try biodegradable trays, shop around online under biodegradable.

Do a cost comparison over the year which saves you more money?

Other money and good for the planet saving ideas:
In Sacramento County some schools are getting gardens, start a compost area, too. The biodegradable stuff needs to go into the earth not landfills to degrade.

Your gardeners, the cafeteria food not consumed could all supply you resources for your compost pile, instead of adding the food to garbage landfills. Wash out the garbage liners and re-use them, ask the county or whoever picks up your garbabe/recycling if your even doing it right. Contianers, trays with food or drink in them needs, to be clean to be recyled here. Try Master Gardeners for free advice, for composting: cesacramento.ucdavis.edu or 916-875-6913.

There is eco-friendly dish detergent available, in big containers too.

Also, does your district need craft supplies or cheaper craft ideas and decorations, toilet paper rolls can be used do a net search of toilet paper rolls. Buy recyled products helps the recylcing industry. I have found they are cheaper these days, like file folders.

Switch to 'ShammyWow' instead of paper towels and sponges or natural scrub brushes, hang dry things intead of using driers. Some counties and cities have water recycling programs and gray-water water with soap and dirt and can used to water landscaping and playground grass. National Geographic said its good to raise the lawn mowers height to the highest cutting to help the grass and we will need less water to water it, too.

Buy waterless car-wash cleaner and see if you can raise money for school supplies by having a car wash.

Customer request: Wants his solid inner-tube removed from bent wheel and returned to new wheel. How?

Sandman

Bicycle solid inner-tubes...Don't like 'em, don't stock 'em, but have a customer who's boy bent the front wheel that has a solid tube in it. He wants the solid tube removed and put on his new wheel.

How is this done?

Is this a matter of soaping the thing up and wrestling it off?

Then how to get it back on.

Same?
For clarification this is a solid tube that sits inside a regular tire.

Thank you for solid tire answers.

Answer
Geez, why do people ride on those things?

My advice: Just be honest. Tell him your shop doesn't carry or install solid tires or tubes due to the issues with installation (special tools), poor performance (heavy in weight and high rolling resistance), and overall inferior ride qualities (comfort) in comparison to standard tubes. If solid tubes represented a good choice for your customers, you'd stock the tubes and have the necessary tools to install them. Apologize for any inconvenience, but assure him that you can help him select a belted tire for additional puncture protection if that's his primary concern. This response would be respectful of the customer, even if it's not what he originally wanted.

I do like the way you're trying to solve this issue without causing friction with your customer; it shows you're concerned about satisfying your customer, when many shops might have directed him to the discount store for a solid tube. But just because you want to say "yes" to your customer, it doesn't mean you can or should in this case. Maybe he doesn't know that solid tubes/tires are OEM for shopping carts, lawn mowers, wheel barrows, and junky bikes owned by people that don't understand that the occasional flat is a fact of life when you ride a bike.

I assume you're selling him the new wheel and don't want to lose the sale over a seemingly trivial issue. But not being up front with him could prove to be a complete waste of your time. If he can't understand your position, then maybe he does need to go to elsewhere.
