What is the best mower to use on a very steep slope in my yard?

best lawn mower in market image

lawn mower

I am in the market for a new lawn mower. I want to buy one that can handle a hill that is 145 feet wide and goes up 20 feet over a 40 foot span...it's very steep. Is there a self-propelled mower that I could buy that can handle this job, or should I give in and hire a lawn service?

Answer
Get a Honda self-propelled walk behind mower. A 4 cycle lawnmower is better for steep hills, been doing this for 25 years. Anything else is big or too expensive, like a riding mower 54inch cut, you can't roll it. When using a riding mower, ride up and down the hill diagonally each way and everytime for the best and safest cuts.

Where do you buy cheap used lawn mower parts?

Does anyone know of a website that sells cheap used carburetors for a lawn mower? I picked a free lawn mower and its missing the carburetor so I need to find one.

Try a flea market.

How to remove self propel gear on toro lawn mower?

Our self propel toro recycler 20138 20016 lawn mower is running very well except the self propel stopped working, so I went through the diagnostic process and concluded that the wire properly ingages the self propel and the belt properly turns the self propel pulley, but both the gear turned by the pulley and the gear on the axle are worn down. So I have taken the axle off of the lawn mower to try to get the gear off (I removed all of the clips, washers, wheels, height adjusters, etc. too) but I can't get the gear on the axle off due to a pin holding it on. I've been hammering at this thing for hours and it wont come out, is there some special way I can remove this pin, or is it part of the axle and can't be removed or what? I'm hoping to not have to buy a new axle but rather just the two new gears because I'm trying to save money doing this but if need be ill buy the bew axle I guess, and I may need help removing the other gear attached to the pulley, or I may not, I just haven't gotten to it yet because of this pain in the neck axle gear. Thank you for your help!

Toro lawn mower will not start. July 22, 2013.?

M

July 22, 2013.

I have the following Toro lawn mower. The lawn mower engine showed a continuous decline in running time. Five weeks ago, the lawn mower continued to run in perfect order. As time passed by, the engine would not run as long. The engine would run, but die after a certain time. The engine running time continued to decrease as time passed by. Now, the engine will not start.

Toro 6.5 horsepower GTS lawn mower
Toro model number 20017
Toro serial number 240121813

Tecumseh Power Company
engine model number: LV195EA
spec: 362003B
engine family: 4TPXS.1951BC

Round one: We replaced the spark plug and air filter. The engine would run for one or two seconds.

Round two: We removed and cleaned the small metal bowl attached to the carburetor with carburetor cleaner. We removed and cleaned the main jet by using a small wire. We filled the fuel tank with one-week old 87 octane unleaded fuel. The engine would run for one or two seconds.

We drained the fuel tank and filled the tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel. The engine continue to run! Hurray! We pulled the starter cord an hour later and the engine continue to run! Hurray! Two successful tests made me very happy.

When I transported the lawn mower from my friend's home to my home, I pulled the starter cord. The engine failed to start! The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

I wanted to try starting the engine the next day.

Round three: The next day, I pulled the starter cord and the engine would not start. The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

We cleaned the fuel tank with carburetor cleaner and the tiny mesh screen that serves as the fuel filter. We rinsed the fuel tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel twice and refilled the tank with fresh 93 octane unleaded fuel.

We applied carburetor cleaner through the fuel line between the fuel tank and carburetor. We applied carburetor cleaner to the float in the small metal bowl. We did not fully disassemble the carburetor.

I pulled the starter cord and the engine would not start. The engine would not even run for one or two seconds.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you again for your help and guidance.

-Mark

Answer
I used to have the same problem. Every other season or so. I would remove the carburetor and spray electrical contact cleaner through all of the ports. The ports are fixed in this machine I believe, and there are no needle valves/adjustment screws. I would also stick a fine copper wire through these ports. It took about an hour start to finish including re-installing the carburetor . Ran like a raped ape after that.

Can you help with Lawn Mower Maintenance?

best lawn mower mulching blades on john deere mower blades 38 cut decks mulcher lawn mower blade for john ...
best lawn mower mulching blades image

scotty_doe

I am a lawncare newbie (I've lived in an apartment the majority of my life). Now that spring is here, I need to get my lawn mower ready. How do I change the oil?? Sharpen the blades? What to use for an oil catch pan? I feel stupid for asking these questions, but I was never taught this growing up. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Answer
Quick and dirty for lawn mower tune ups:

1. Pull the spark plug. If it's fouled, replace it. Better yet, replace it anyway, as they only cost a few bucks.

2. Unscrew the air filter cover (or unsnap it, if it snaps into place) and check to see how dirty it is. If it has a foam element over it, clean the element with water, dry it, then squeeze some motor oil onto it and wring it out (it should seem mostly oil free, but still tacky). If the air filter itself is dirty, replace it. IMPORTANT: If the air filter looks even slightly dirty, replace it. The particles caught by the main filter are too small to see by the naked eye, so if you see particles, it is over-dirty.

3. Drain and replace oil:
- The drain plug will be square, so you can't miss it. It is normally located on the lower side of the engine (riders) or the underside (push). Simply unscrew with a sizable pan under it. Riders have 2-4 quarts of oil, Pushes have just over 1 quart normally.
- Once the oil is drained, replace the plug and fill it with the recommended oil (riders normally take 10W30, pushes normally take SAE30). Every brand has different specs, so look in your manual! Do not listen to people who say "every mower takes ..."
- Do not over fill the oil! The oil dipstick will tell you if it should be crewed in or not while checking oil level. On screw-in types, if you do not screw it in while checking the level, you will drastically overfill the crankcase and cause the engine to seize up in short order. (made a LOT of money from that one)

4: Sharpening the blades: Don't do this yourself! If not properly balanced after sharpening, you will destroy your spindle bearing (riders) or destroy your engine crankshaft (pushes). Not to mention sharpening a blade is not as easy as it looks. The angle must be right and mulching blades require steady hands to avoid damaging the blade beyond repair.

5: General lube/cleaning:
- Spray your mower down with degreaser and let it sit for a few minutes. Spray off with a jet water nozzle.
- Drip oil anywhere a hinge or cable opening resides.
- Grease anywhere a grease nipple resides (you need a grease gun for this). Many riders have them, almost no pushes have them. If you do grease, grease until grease comes out of an opening. Greasing a few shots does not cut it.

6: Check belts for damage. Replace if any damage is seen, especially dry rot! Belts take a lot of torture, but a damaged belt will fail in short order and sometimes a bit of damage to the mower or you upon failure.

7: Check tire pressure. Fill tires to nominal PSI stated on the side of the tire. e.g.: Different tire pressures in the rear end of a rider can (and will) kill your tranny. Sometimes the little things make a big difference.

8: Prior to storage, always put fuel stabilizer in the your mower and run it for a few minutes. Many people will say "run it out of gas to prevent fuel clogs", they are ignorant! No fuel = no lubrication of the rubber gaskets in the carb, which = dry, cracked gaskets in the spring and a complete carb rebuild in your future. PS: Carb rebuild kits cost very little, but let your mechanic do the job if you are not knowledgable in the area, as a properly tuned mower will add years, if not decades to its lifespan.

Doing your own mechanic's projects are fun and instantly rewarding when done properly. Why let your mechanic get all of the gratification? Do it yourself and save a few bucks at the same time, when appropriate.

Have fun!

Is it better to mulch grass or to use regular blades and blow the grass out the side chute?

Jeff M

I own a John Deere Z225 mower with a mulching kit and mulching blades. I mow 6 to 8 lawns a week and lately I've had a lot of problems with the cutting quality. I've had to mow over the grass twice because it's so long and afterwards there are still clumps. Is it better to take off the mulching deck and blow the grass out the side chute of the mower or will this make an even bigger mess? I'm tired of going over the grass twice. Also, if I were to take off the mulching kit, would I put the regular blades on?

Answer
The beauty of mulching is that you don't usually have to do any raking or clean-up. And also you are blasting the chopped up nutrients back into the lawn.
If you are having to go back over the lawn twice, it sounds as if your blades are not sharp enough and maybe you are not mowing often enough.
I always make sure my blades are sharpened - I do it myself - because there is nothing more frustrating than trying to mow with dull blades. I mow 8 lawns and sharpen my blades at least once a week.
I don't mow my lawns once a week ; I mow when needed, weather permitting, and try not to let the grass get ahead of me. Another thing, make sure that the underside of your deck is kept clean. Blow out any accumulated clippings with a hose as often as needed ; preferably when the clippings are still "fresh".
I would never go back to side discharge. Too often you have to rake and dispose of the clippings. This is not only time consuming and a pain in the neck , it also robs the lawn of good nutrients.
If you take off the mulching kit , you can leave the mulching blades on. They work fine.
Hope this helps you out !

I need help with striping my lawn and making it look professional?

Aztec

We have about 1 acre of land and we use a cub-cadet lawn mower. I have tried to stripe it but I cant get it to look like the pros. Is my technique wrong? Is there something i could make to pull behind the tractor to bend the grass down? That is what they do at the golf course. I mow it at about 4.5 inches. Any tips?

Answer
Stripes in grass work best on fine textured turf such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Bent or Fescue. If you are growing a turf that requires a mowing height of 4.5 inches such as St Augustine or Bahia, then striping is tougher.

Be sure the blades are very sharp. Mow often and make marks somewhere unobtrusive so that you are mowing in the same direction in the same place every time you mow. Mow often. It is the repetition of direction that eventually puts stripes in turf..

Reel mowers often have rollers behind them to prepare the surface for playing. The rollers should not be too heavy to prevent soil compaction.

Remember, the striping in turf is much more visible from above and on TV, you may have more striping than you can see from ground level.

How do I know what weight oil to use in a particular small engine? I no longer have the owner's manual.?

best lawn mower for small garden on Samples Lawn & Garden,Lawn Mowers, Toro, Snowblowers, Chainsaws, Zero ...
best lawn mower for small garden image

Ron P

I have a mower, garden tractor, generator and snow blower.

Answer
Hmmmm. There's alot of incorrect info being given to this point. MTD stands for Modern Tool and Die. Although MTD has bought up alot of other brands, Murray is not one of them.

Lawn tractors all use 4 stroke motors in them, as do most snowblowers, lawn mowers and generators. There are the odd exceptions but those are few and far between. If there is a crankcase for oil to go into, then the engine is definitely a 4 stroke. As several people have already suggested, 30 weight motor oil is the first choice for air cooled engines in outdoor power equipment. However, straight grades of motor oil are getting a bit harder to find these days so you can also use a multi-grade oil such as 15W40, 20W40 or 20W50 in everything except the snowblower. I would use 10W30 or 5W30 in that engine because it is only used during cold weather and that particular multigrade will help it spin over a bit easier in sub-zero temps. My personal preference is Shell's Rotella T oil but any direct equivelant is fine. Just make sure you change the oil every 25 hours hours MAX and keep the oil level filled to the line inbetween changees.

What is the machine that gardeners use called?

Q. What is the machine that they use on the border of the grass and concrete? It's a tiny lawn mower kind of thing with a circular blade in it and it makes a scraping noise when it hits the concrete. It's very annoying and I'd like to know what it is called and what the purpose of it is. Thanks!

Answer
An edger?

An edger (also known as a lawn edger or stick edger) is a garden tool used to cleanly separate a lawn from a walkway or other paved surface, such as a concrete sidewalk or asphalt path. Edgers may be manual or automated, typically employing a small two-stroke gasoline motor or an electric motor. Use of an edger defines a clear separation between the lawn and the walkway, imparting a finished appearance that is neater than can be achieved by merely mowing over the border of the lawn and walkway (which frequently permits tufts of low-growing grass to hang over onto the walkway, resulting in an irregular or ragged appearance).

Self-propelled lawn 22" mowers - Kohler OHV 149cc vs B/S 190cc engines?

best lawn mower engine 2012 image

Tom

Both are on the same FWD TORO self propelled mower body (model:20371 vs. 20331). I read the 190 has 6.75 hp and the 149cc has 4.2, but both claim 6.75 gross torque. Which is the better engine to go with? thanks much
p.s. I also was told both these engines were made in China .....

Answer
The B&S engine one is a 2011 model or older, the Kohler is a 2012. The B&S engine is the old "L Head" style Quantum engine that Briggs has used for years. Due to EPA emission regulations, those engines are being phased out in favor of "OHV" or "Over Head Valve" engines. The Kohler engine has only been out for a short time. I have yet to see one in action or service it. This is the first year we have had one in our shop. Another reason that the general public will not hear, is B&S owns Snapper and Simplicity. Toro sees them as competitors now. Either engine will last. Even if they are made in China, Kohler and Briggs will stand behind their engine. I would haggle on the Briggs since its a year older. Another way to tell what year it is, look at the first 3 digits of the serial number. If it starts with a 310, its a 2010, 311 is 2011 and 312 is 2012.

Just a middle-range one, not particularly expensive.
Preferably one you actually use that is good.
Aka a 'whipper snipper' or lawn 'trimmer' or something - I DON'T KNOW... just looking for a good brand name

Answer
I have a "Little Wonder" which were/are put out by MTD; a large Mower etc Dealer. Were made in USA and plenty of parts available if you need but rarely have any trouble. If you need it to cut back edges along paths etc it's the best one I have used, better the VICTA and most other edgers. I have 620ft of edging (in my old language) to do every now and then. Easy to use and a cinch to maintain. If you're looking for a Whipper Snipper go for a "Styll" brand and don't waste your money on the cheaper brands that are available in Bunnings and the like. Talk to a trusted mower repair shop proprietor if you know of one, as they can normally in all honesty, can tell you what brands they recommend and what cheaper brands to stay away from as most aren't repairable etc. Be careful if you're looking for an electric 240vAC one as they are in my mind not worth the bother of having to run out 50ft of lead etc, they are also too dangerous in my mind as an Electrician as you can cut the power lead easily and that adds a risk to life if you don't have an earth leakage circuit breaker or similar to save you from bigger problems, even so these electric ones are in some cases claimed to be "Double Insulated" etc. I personally wouldn't take the risk having seen some of "their" Double Insulated methods.

What in your life makes you happy and what do you dread?

Fireman T

Answer
Accomplishing something makes me happy (even really small things).
As does having successful relationships.

I dread disappointing the people I love; that is akin to failure.

I also dread starting the lawn mower (temperamental is not the adjective I use for this Victa); measuring the weeds in my garden (each one has it's own measuring stick and they take bets) and dusting (FT, you ever tried to hire a hazmat suit in Tweed Heads?)

classic vw bug need some help?

best lawn mower deals u k image

Austin H

so im thinking about getting a bug for my first car my mom loves the idea and loves that theyre cheap
i was hoping to get a convertable and turn it into a baja bug is there anything i should know before i get into this? i dont have the bug yet so i should figure this stuff out
what are the goods and bads of a bug? specifically a convertable baja bug
oh and would i be able to take the baja bug camping? like could it handle light trails? i live in colorado so mountains are all over
and i was going to be a mechanic would this be a good car to learn off of? and could it haul maybe three lawn mowers? i repair them as a side job

Answer
Austin: A couple of responses to your questions and extras

1) If you are talking about a 'classic' convertible you are NOT talking about cheap. A good one, fully restored and in daily driver shape, will be worth about $8 to $12,000. Showroom quality will bring up closer to $18,k (Check eBay's completed auctions for an idea of price vs. condition)

Secondly, convertibles are rarer then bugs.. if you find one and start whacking away at it you will lose a bunch of its value right off the bat.

2) Ok.. dunebuggy AND street legal. You are talking about the old Myer's Manx type kits. A nice idea and best done with an old but with a bit of surface rust. Make sure the structural elements are still good (posts and framework).

3) Engine.. if you put in a 1700 engine and do regular maint. it should handle light (dirt) trails pretty easily. Just remember to keep cleaning the air cleaner and hose out the cooling fan / fins after any dirty ride. Maint. is the big key. MONTHLY oil changes.

4) Do not plan on being warm in the winter. The engine provides interior heat and it is too efficient to warm up with Colorado's snowy winter. This is good for the engine but sucks for the driver. So keep this in mind. ESPECIALLY if you hack off the top of a regular bug.

5) If you want to haul lawn mowers get an el camino or an old truck. The bug will not work very well for that.

6) Its a great engine to learn to work on. It is simple and easy to deal with for routine things - pretty much like your lawn mower engines. Just buy yourself an old 'how to keep it running' book from the 70's. (available on eBay as a reprint - xerox edition)

7) Back to the cutting off the roof part. The frame of the bug provides structural integrity to the car. If you cut the pilar posts and top off you will weaken the car. The convertible has extra stiffenng.

8) Lastly, if you MUST take it out in the snow, put some extra weight in the front (sandbags). This keeps the light front end ( you can actually pick it up in the front by yourself) from 'sking' an losing contact with the ground which makes steering a new adventure.

good luck.. if I were you *I* would go for it.

the 11 o'clock news or something. She has really been fighting sleep here for the past week or so, and around 7 she gets fussy...rubbing eyes...etc. and if I rock her she will fight sleep and kick against me, in crib she will cry...this starts around 7 and continues for a couple hours till she is exhausted. She used to be out by 7ish and now she is tired but wont let go. So last night I do the whole "put her down before she gets real tired" thing and same scenario and then a fight ensued between hub and I because he says "she is not a robot and if she wants to stay up late let her." Yeah, fine and all but her sitting on the couch watching Letterman w/ her dad is not the way I want to do it and I think that her getting used to this is attributing to her fighting sleep...she is getting used to falling asleep on the couch for the past few days and it is getting worse...and she is exhausted!!!! But continues to fight...and bedtime has turned into a 4 hour long battle (already)....
...and to let you know how last night went...lets just say I woke up this morning w/ my dear daughter asleep next to me in my bed. I am all for some that co-sleep, but I REALLY WANT her to be able to sleep in her crib soon and be able to let herself fall asleep when she is tired...and before the part where she gets overly tired. What am I doing wrong?? She is not 2....she is only 4.5 months and still sooooo little. But when she cries and I go check on her every few minutes she will scream (in a happy way) stop crying and kick all around like "get me get me get me" and I do....

sometimes when I get too tired dealing with my son,if he will let me I will let him rest on my lap or beside me in the recliner and watch tv until he gets tired enough for bed .....
it can get really stressful between a couple with different attempts at the same end which seems like we are fighting against each other . both trying to do their best the only way they can think of ......

Lawn Mower question, if you have experience mowing lawns?

best lawn mower zoysia grass on zoysia meyers zoysia is known as the cadillac of lawn grasses the turf ...
best lawn mower zoysia grass image

You may be

For just a small lawn, do you think a reel mower is ok, or will they get rusted up and hard to push after a while.

What do you think, reel, electric, gas.

I need to buy one, but it's just a small lawn about 20 feet by 15 feet.

Answer
It depends on how big your lawn is, and what type of grass you have.

My old lawn was about the same size as yours and I used a reel mower very effectively on it. But with some "cool season" grasses (bluegrass, rye, fescue), you really have to keep up with it. Taller grass can be dificult to cut w/ a reel mower.

If you have a Southern grass, like Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine - they are great mowers. You'd definitely be better off using a reel mower on one of these.

You can pick up a new reel mower for about $60, so it's not a big investment. A gas or electric will run you considerably more.

Can I seed centipede grass on top of an established lawn seeded with fescue in June?

rumell

My lawn is currently somewhat green/brown and I desire a green lawn for the upcoming hot summer months

Answer
I personally had great success overseeding with centipede (I live in a southern state). As opposed to the aforementioned method, I utilized a "de thatching" blade on my lawn mower set at the lowest setting, which tore out all the old thatch and exposed the ground for the seeds (which need to be kept damp after sowing, of course).

Having said that, my greatest success in re-seeding my southern lawn has been through the use of Zoysia plugs (available online through various nurseries). They took much longer to establish than the centipede (about 3-4 years), but now never require water, and keep a dense, carpet-like mat of turf all summer long. Check out Zoysia before you make your final decision to go with centipede.

My husband and I are looking into buying a lawn mower/tractor to mow about 3 - 4 acres. We are thinking about either a JD 2210 or JD 4115. Does anyone have a suggestion of any others, especially of lesser cost, but the same quality for the amount of mowing to be done? Also, suggestions on which size of deck and the amount of time it would take to mow this amount would be great. We have a Torro with a 54" deck now, but we are sharing it with my father-in-law and it is becoming a hassle to take back and worth every week or so. Plus, we have to get the bushhog to use too. We use the Torro for yard (about 1.5 acres) and the bushhog for the other acres. That's why we need one that would be great to do it all! ~thanks

Answer
I'd Look at exmark or grasshopper's..., any 42 inch with a hydro riding mower will do 1.5 acres easy though... I'd also think about simplicity/snapper mowers as well. Simplicity owns snapper.

Hey 07JAB88 ,

Home Depot has a brand MTD, they are inexpensive compared to the a John Deere. The MTD will last 6 years easy if you take care of it, do not leave it outside in the rain. I had one for 3 years, when I moved I sold it for nearly what I paid for it. It looked great, worked great, cut great, the bags held up and it was still shiny. Here is one for $200 bid on e-bay right now.

Check out the Ariens 54 In. Deck 25 HP Kohler Engine Hydrostatic Yard Tractor at the second and third sites. Apparently time has passed and Home Depot sells the Ariens not MTD. These will do the job. Just take care of it.

Just sharing: A Reel type mower makes better cuts on the blades of grass, so looks better - so I put one at the end.

what is the best price for lawn services?

best lawn mower large garden image

$$V-G$$

starting a lawn service.im only 14(almost 15) i want to start, but i dont know how much i should charge for it.

Answer
If you mean lawn mowing, I charge 7$ per hour if I use my mower and trimmer, but that is in a small town and would be rock bottom. For a large town, I would go at least 10$ per hour and for small lawns that take a half hour or less, I would have a discount of 6$

Some customers give me 20$ an hour, but these are wealthy customers and elderly ladies on social security probably would find someone else.

If you have a garden/lawn tractor, they use more gas so would cost more for the gas and to pay off the cost of the tractor.

It takes a lot of energy to mow lawns all summer and you may be walking 20-30 miles a day.

What is the difference between lawn tractors?

What is the difference between "Lawn" "Yard" "Fairway" and "Garden" riding mowers/tractors? While I am asking, do you have an opinion about Briggs & Stratton vs Kohler vs Kawasaki engines in large riding mowers, such as 24hp? I am looking to spend about $2000 - hoping to find a discount due to end-of-season. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Lawn Tractors are limited to mowing and pulling utility carts and such items. NOT for Ground Engaging implements such as plows, rototillers cultivators..etc.

Lawn" "Yard" "Fairway" are your basic grass cutters.

The Briggs and Stratton Engines have a long term reputation for quality as does the Kohler. Never had a lot of dealings with the Kawaski but John Deer uses those almost exclusively in their lawn and garden machines.

Garden tractors are heavier built with stronger transmissions or trans axles. Garden tractors can handle tasks from tilling new ground to plowing or blowing snow including mowing.

$2000. 00 will get you a fairly good quality Tractor capable of doing a variety of jobs.

How can I find the true market value of a used riding lawn mower?

Answer
Mowers are hard. Some people do not maintain them at all, and use them over conditions they weren't designed for. So each one has to speak for itself, condition wise. A three year old mower used only a couple of times, could bring as much as it cost when new, since newer prices keep climbing.

I want to know how long it lasts per charge and how many charges you get out of it before it needs to be replaced? I also was wondering how much electricity they use per charge and if they are less expensive to run than gas mowers?

Answer
due to the price how cheap basic 4 stroke lawn mowers are i would go with a petrol electric mowers will work but are under powered and parts are very expensive
the battery other than having to charge it will only last as long as its life is. could be from 1 -5 years depending on quality

What is the difference between a push (hand) mower and an electric/petrol mower?

kanglq00

I'm looking to get a new mower but I don't really know which one to get. Besides the obvious (manual vs automatic), is there any major difference (ie. in mowing capability)?

Thanks everyone!

Answer
Well, sure. A powered mower can easily handle taller grass. A push mower become exponentially more difficult with over grown grass, and nearly impossible if the grass has been neglected and is 6 inches tall.

If you have a large lawn, the power mower will save time, because it will be faster. It will be more expensive to run, as it needs fuel, and most pollute like crazy.

Push mowers will work nicely IF you have a small lawn, and are attentive to both frequent cutting, and regular maintenance on the mower - oiling and sharpening the blades. And it doesn't cost anything to run and use, and doesn't pollute.

What electric lawn mower should I buy?

I'm buying a new house with 1/2 acre of lawn. There are some moderate hills, so I would want a model that is self-propelled.

Answer
hey, i wouldnt recomend using a electric lawn mower, specially seeing as its half an acre of lawn, i would suggest getting a fuel powered one. it depends alot on your budget and if you want to do any gardens on the side aswell, but i own a semi pro lawnmower make called hayter, they are by far the most reliable lawnmower that you can get that is just normal and it will last you for years and years, my dad owns one and has owned it for 8 years and still not had a thing wrong wi it. mines 3 years old and is fine and the one at my work is over 10 years and still hasnt going wrong with it. other then that try just get a wee toro, kubota, ransoms, honda or john deere mower, hope this helps :D

What should I look for when buying a used lawnmower?

phillyphan

Buying a house with a little less than 1/2 acre. How about price range?

Thanks!

Answer
A lawn that small does not need anything more than a walk behind mower. If the lawn is fairly flat I would not bother with a self propelled one. The drive system is one more thing to maintain. You should be able to find a used mower for under $100. Things to look for.
Are the wheels in good shape? If they are wobbly or worn the mower may be very used.

Is the blade in good condition? A dull blade is easy to sharpen but one with large nicks in the cutting edge may need replacing.

Does the oil look clean? Some people never change the oil in their mowers. It should be done once each year or every 40 hours running time.

Does it start easily and run smoothly. Let it warm up for 10 minutes, then shut it off and check again. Just because it starts when it is cold does not mean it will when it is hot.

Mow with it for 100 feet. Does it roll straight? Is the handle comfortable to hold?

That's all I can think of. If it passes these checkpoints you should have a good mower. One other thing, a new push mower is not very expensive. If you do end up going new, be sure to buy it from someplace that will service it.

How many amps is needed for a good electric lawn mower?

Nicole B

We've got a very small yard of bermuda grass. We're currently shopping for electric lawn mowers, but don't know what an acceptable amount of amps would be? We saw one in our price range with 6.5 amps, but for $40 more, we can get a 9 amp mower. Is there a big difference between the two? Would I need more amps? And is it worth the $40 price difference? Thanks so much!

Answer
With your very small yard you will not need the higher amp model. You need to keep the grass at a reasonable height each time you mow. In other words do not let it get too long before you mow. That is what will cause a strain on the smaller motor. The difference between the two motors you are looking at is very small. The 6.5 amp is approximately 1/2 horsepower and the 9 amp is approximately 3/4 horsepower. So that is very little difference. I think you should save the 40 bucks for something else. how do you make a go kart out of a lawn mower?

Chef Spark

i need a step by step instruction on how to make a gokart out of a lawn mower and plywood can anyone help me?

Answer
It would be so much easier to mount the engine on an old lawn tractor and switch the pullies, put the big one where the small one goes and visa versa. It just so happens I have an old tractor I am getting ready to throw out, the deck is no good and the engine is off and in great shape. It had a 2 cylinder 18hp engine on it, but if you aren't very big just about any vertical shaft engine will move it and bolt up if it is a briggs engine. I'll give you the tractor if you come and get it, the engine I'll sell for $400 dollars! If you want to make it out of wood put a tractor rear end on it, a hydrostatic one like the one I'm throwing out would work fine. (In kentucky)

Can a 2 cycle engine be able to push my 35inch mud tires on a jacked up lawn mower or no?

Q. i have a jacked up lawn mower sittin on 35in mud kings and sits about 5 feet high and tryin to find a motor that would be able to push 35's but i want it to go at least 35-40mph can anybody help??

Answer
Not sure if I even want to know how you bolted thos up, but I can be certain that if you still have the original axle and trans, no matter what engine you put in there it will never reach that speed without breaking something. (probably the axle). Stock units will not handle the exra torque you need to spin those tires, and you will be in the 30-40 hp range as well . Have you ever ridden a lawn tractor at 20 mph? Almost imposible to control with stock tires and height. This thing will probably tip over on the first corner.I would suggest at least a 400 cc motorcycle motor/ chain drive to a solid axle. Don`t forget to post the wipeout video on your first and only test ride

What Type Of Spark Plugs does a John Deere L111 Automatic Riding Lawn Mower Use?

Hey their I have a John Deere L111 Automatic Riding Lawn mower and i would like to Change the Spark plugs what type of spark plugs are their? And how do i change the Oil Also and Does it have a oil Filter and also what type of Air filter does it have and how do i change it and total coast Of Parts.

Answer
Look at the plugs that are in it, get the numbers off of them and buy the same thing. The air filter is paper with a foam pre filter. You can wash the pre filter and reuse it. The paper filter will have a briggs part number on it. As for the oil filter you will have to look at your engine and see if it has an oil filter, it will look just like a car filter but smaller. To change the oil you should find a drain valve/plug near the dipstick tube.
Spark plugs are $3.00 each, the air filter will be about $14.00, the oil filter will be about that also.

Lawn mower string will only pull when I take spark plug out?

ebonieboo6

String will not pull on lawn mower. I thought it was the spark plug. I took the spark plug out and tried to pull the cord and it pulled with no problem. What do you think the problem could be.

Answer
Could be that your valves are frozen in place. Is it a four stroke? is there any oil in the sump?

There are two possible causes. Either the compressed gas can't get out or there is a mechanical cause. An extra long spark plug could do that but you'd easily notice the impact. If it is the compressed gases, a really string tug should still spin the motor.

You may need to take it to a mechanic.
