I believe I have put to much oil in my lawn mower. Will the problem eventually correct itself?

best lawn mower spark plug on ... to replace the spark plug on a riding lawn mower | Riding Lawn Mowers

Todd L

I believe I put too much oil in my 6.75 HP Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine. I changed spark plugs and the thing started again but the new plug was immeidately left with a charred end. Still, the thing ran, if not at optimum efficiency. My question is: will this problem correct itself or will running the engine with too much oil in it only lead to more problems?

Answer
Drain some or all of the oil out and start with new oil. You will also have to inspect the air filter for oil. If it has oil on it, replace it. Do not tip the mower to drain the oil. Use the plug on the bottom side of the engine to drain the oil. Set the mower on blocks of wood to get it off the ground so that you can reach the drain plug. It will not correct itself.

My riding lawn mower will not start. What could be the problem?

I tried a new battery.Still nothing. It isn't turning over at all. I really know nothing about small engines. could it be the spark plug? Any help other than telling me to buy another riding lawn mower would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Yes, it could be the spark plug. It's not the battery, since you just replaced that. You also might want to check your wiring connections: Sometimes tightening something that's loose will do the trick.

Good luck!

Lex

The old fart called the cops on me for loud music.

Its funny cause the only reason I dis it was to drown out the noise he makes every day.

He rides around on his lawn mower 7am-6pm every day. And he doesnt even have a lawn!!!!!!! Only dirt.

I only started playing loud music because after 3 years of him riding his lawn mower I got sick of it.

Funny hiw this old azzho thinks only he is entitled to peace and quiet, no one else.

So do you agree its funny?

Answer
Yes, that amazing, "only dirt" LOL! I have a neighbour like that, he used to have a home-made trike, he used to just sit there and rev the engine all day for no reason. So one day, my step fathers friend accidentally ran over and killed a badger. We took the badger and put it on the trike, positioned so he was sitting up and holding the handle bars, lol. My step dad got arrested the next day, because they had cctv cameras on their roof and seen him the next day when they looked back at the footage, lol. He said it was worth it, you should do it to your guys lawn mower. LOL. Hope i helped :)

What is the best type of lawnmower to use? and also for a lower price?

i been dying to see this in the united states....and to get rid of gas pumps, but something tells me that this government, the one in charge for the past 15 years, that they love oil and DO NOT want to see a change in the car industry, because oil is profitable...but my question is this...what can this government, this new one (obama administration) do to change the streets, to make the US liek the US we see in iRobot or in Babylon A.D.....what is gonna take to each of us OWN a hybrid by 2020??

im looking to buy the new Prius, either a 2010, 11, or a 2012 Toyota Prius, just because i want to see clean air and no CO2.

Answer
hybrids still use gas, they're just a more fuel efficient way which actually isn't a whole lot better than a regular gas engine

also just so you know, most of the CO2 and gases in the air isn't from vehicles, most of it it actually from small 2 stroke engines like in lawn mowers, weed eaters, some boat engines, stuff like that, everybody has been trying to make vehicles better on the environment but nobody has even thought about making those small engines better for the environment, nobody thinks about the lawnmowers with the smoke pouring out but God forbid people (like me) are driving full size trucks or suvs when most of those people need that, when in fact i bet a single push mower emits more gasses and pollution than my 98 Chevy Silverado Z71 with a 5.7L 350 V8

What do you think about putting graphic images on cigarette packs?

Michael

So they want to do this by some time in 2012 - images of damaged lungs, dead bodies, and such on at least 50% of cigarettes sold.
What do you think about this? Is it constitutional? Why (really I mean HOW) does the government have the authority to alter the design of a company's product?
Do you think it will achieve the end they want? Why haven't they been talking about doing this with food or alcohol? Of all drugs, alcohol affects your body the most.
Cancer, emphysema, amputations, etc... these results aren't even typical!
As far as bad food goes, being fat is typical. And what about the crap they put in food (MSG, trans fat, HFCS, etc, etc)? Are the adverse effects of those typical? Absolutely. Why aren't there warning labels on them? Or why aren't they pushing it?
Additionally, even if it does work - everybody quits smoking, and tobacco companies go out of business, whatever - wtf is up with the government? The government would be pushing people out of business!
Personally, I think they are putting their big noses where they don't belong. This ought to be up to parents, and one's own judgment.
So just tell me your opinion, and why you think that. Or just say whether you support it or not.
@ The CRYING Potato - the government keeps tobacco legal because they have no right to make it illegal.
@ The CRYING Potato - the government keeps tobacco legal because they have no right to make it illegal.

Answer
Yep. You're right. It's BS. Why not put pictures of disgusting, damaged teeth on Coke products? How about mutilated body parts pictures on lawn mowers, because improper use, you know, could cause that damage? It's idiotic to single-out cigarettes, no matter if you smoke or not.

Is it illegal to have amber flashing lights in your car in new zealand ? the lights are for personal use and i wont be using them on new zealand roads, they will be turned off when on the roads

Answer
As far as I'm aware, you can have what you want off the road, even replica police car sirens and lights, as long as they are disabled on the road.

I happened to look up amber lights for my jurisdiction, and here you need a permit for an amber light on the road (like on an excavator or lawn mower etc.) Off-road, as far as I know, no problem.

Sheri

We had this role play next week and it's about australia. My groupmates, well we actually not that familiar with it, so just a little help from all of you out there, pls help us out!!!!

thanks!!!

Answer
Australians work longer hours than just about anyone else on the planet, with the possible exceptions of the Japanese and Americans. According to one estimate, Americans work one hour per year longer than Australians. So we are not all that "laid back".

Australians are not big church goers. Maybe about 5% of the population go to church regularly. More than half the population are nominally Roman Catholic. Many Australians regard certain types of Christians as "God botherers" who are always bothering God with cries about this and that.

Austrslians are supposed to be great beer drinkers. This might have been true once upon a time, but it is not true so much now.

The most important single industry in Australia, so far as export earnings are concerned is coal mining. The third most important export industry is education, there are many thousands of people in Australian schools and universities whose tuition fees are being paid by parents or others overseas.

Important Australian Inventions
The first practical refrigerators used to ship frozen beef from Australia to Britain.
A stable vaccine against anthrax.
Possibly the first ever medical X-ray by Bragg when his son broke his arm.
The box kite, which was used by the Wright brothers in their first successful airplane flight. - Lawrence Hargraves
The radial engine, once widely used in aircraft. Also Lawrence Hargraves
Froth flotation separation of minerals from waste rock.
All those were in the 1800s or very early 1900s.

More recently
The atomic absorption spectrophotometer - Alan Walsh
The flame ionisation detector
Improved rotary lawn mowers
Improved rotary clothes lines for laundry use (!)
The multi-channel cochlear implant for the profoundly deaf
Biological control of pest species like the prickly pear and the rabbit.

Scientific discoveries.
In astronomy, pulsars, I'm fairly sure of that. New types of Cepheid variable stars too.
In immunology - the theory of clonal selection - Nobel Prize to Sir Macfarlane Burnet
In medicine - Discovery that helicobacter pylori was the main cause of stomach ulcers, not stress or some other factor - Barry Marshall - Nobel Prize
Also in medicine, Australian medical scientist Sir Frank Fenner was instrumental in getting the entire world immunised against smallpox. Another Nobel gong.

how can i transform my lawnmower motor into a motor for bike?

best lawn mower motor oil on The Best Oil for Small Lawn Mower Engines thumbnail
best lawn mower motor oil image

john g

i have a lawn mower motor and would like to set it up to lace a go kart frame, or on a bike some how. can anybody help?

Answer
Lawn mower engines are built with the output shaft facing down. And the oil splash will not do it's job if you mount the engine horizontal. This is a problem for a go-cart. Or a motorized bike. Truthfully your better off buying a engine with a side exiting shaft.
However the power from a down pointing shaft can be changed to a horizontal thu a pinion gear. or even a deep vee belt twisted vertical to horizontal. tho belts were out faster.

What happens if I put synthetic 10W30 motor oil in my lawn mower?

Donna

I'm a motor/engine retard, so I assumed it would be fine. Some people are now telling me it was a stupid idea. Is this going to kill my lawn mower? And can I go back to using conventional oil now that I've run the lawn mower with the synthetic? I've been told you can't go back...

Thank you!
Thanks to you both. I added it because it was all we had in the house and I was mid-mow. Didn't want to run to the store. Thanks again!!!

Answer
You didn't do anything wrong other than waste a few dollars. Lawnmower engines have large tolerances, and are robust enough to run for a while on no oil at all. You could put the cheapest oil available in, and it would work. So you have not done any damage. You don' t need to drain the oil out now. Just use it for the same amount of time you normally would, which for a mower, should be a year. You can go back to petroleum based oils, and your wallet would probably appreciate it.

Synthetics start to matter when you want to run something for multiple thousands of hours. Other major parts of the mower will fail and cause you to replace it before you have oil-related issues from using cheap oil.

How could one learn to work on an engine?

celtica311

All engine types ranging from lawn mowers to trucks.
I know how engines work.

My school does not offer a course in any type of mechanics.

Answer
Get an auto mechanics textbook. Try the local library first. Also check the yellow pages; there may be a bookstore dealing with auto-related books, or go to car parts swapmeets. Read trade magazines like MOTOR. Asking at a local repair shop might get you a stack of greasy back issues. (I'm tempted to suggest a book called "The Joy Of Automobile Repair", but it's very dated, unless you only plan to work on cars from before the '80s. Worth reading, though, if you find it in the library. A lot of the basic stuff hasn't changed, and there's plenty of practical advice.)

Buy an adequate to decent set of tools. Craftsman is a safe bet. (In Canada, Canadian Tire has "Mastercraft", which has a replacement guarantee like Craftsman, and is frequently on sale with whopping discounts.) If possible, get a tool chest to store and organize them.

Hang out and help a more knowledgeable friend, family member, or neighbour. You can pick up a lot of useful tips. If possible, get a part-time job, or even work for free at a shop under a real mechanic.

Buy a project car, truck, bike, or lawnmower, and get it running. You can probably score a non-running mower or garden tractor for nothing: Place a "wanted" notice on Freecycle or a local bulletin board. Or bicycle around the neighbourhood, and if you see something neglected in a yard, knock on the door and ask.

Download the English TV show "The Garage"... while there's a lot of pointless drama, they do show some real life vehicle problems and the joys of fixing them.

Answer
..raptor is the crotch rocket style 4 wheeler, mainly track or dirt roads, not good for woods or fields..no good for other uses as yard work...dont have the suspension for the potential abuse, clearance issues.......big bear, grizzly, wolverine are 4x4 or 2x4,multi-purpose,good for fields, dirt roads, mud, hills generally wherever you want to go..have racks on them to tie things down...and also work great for snow removal, trail mower,etc..you can pretty much replace your lawn tractor now a days with the right 4 wheeler..they have snow blowers, plows, trail mowers, sprayers, cabs w heaters, almost anything you can think of....you may want to stick to a 500cc or larger, especially if you are gonna use it for yard work or 2 people riding..the 4 wheeler is truly a very versatile machine..you also have the option of shift or no shift...hi or lo range...you will be looking at minimum $6000 for new...no matter the brand...they are all produced under strict quality control...its a matter of taste...and dont forget to check for customer satisfaction after the sale, parts costs,etc...

Can I put a plow on my 97 V8 2wd Dodge Ram?

David

Can I put a plow on my 97 V8 2wd Dodge Ram 1500?

Answer
As Dodge man stated it would be pretty much useless. A two wheel drive pickup has enough problems getting around in snow by itself due to the lack of weight over the rear wheels. Adding the weight of plow rigging and the plow to the front end of the truck takes more weight off the rear and makes the truck more subject to spinning.

If you need a snow plow, acquire a 3/4 ton 4x4 and add the equipment.

Have plowed snow using 4x4's, tractors, and even my Kohler powered 418-8 Wheel Horse lawn tractor equipped with ag tires and chains. The lawn tractor was the most fun, it moved 14 inches of powdered snow on level ground and downhill with no problem.

I am starting a local lawn mowing business 20-30 yards and am wondering what kind/type of mower will i need to get. I am 16 and am looking to by a truck too. For the lawn mower price range up to $1200. For the truck up to $8000. Also if i were to charge per sq. ft. what is a good unit price?

Answer
If you are planning on starting a lawn business, I assume you plan on making this a long term venture? If this is so, purchasing "cheap" equipment is a No No! If your gonna commit time and effort into doing a good job for your clients, you need to have at least a mid-priced, commercial grade mower, one that will last more than the 2 months you will get by purchasing a cheaper one. 20 - 30 yards a week is alot of wear and tear on the engine, power drive, cables, and pull string as well as the blade shaft. One week of this wear and tear mowing is as much as the normal homeowner would put on a mower in a "years" time. To keep from having to fix this cheaper mower when it breaks down you need a good one. If the mower isn't cutting, you aren't making any money, and not to mention having to deal with a few irate clients complaining that their lawns are looking scraggly and unmowed because you couldn't mow it that week. You need to at least spend $375.00 - $500.00 smackers on a semi-commercial mower. There are many brands that carry heavier built mowers and these include, Honda, Toro, and Snapper. These 3 are my only choices. Check out each brand and make sure you get one with at least 3.5 horsepower with 4.0 - 5.0 being even better yet. Make sure that you get one with a "rear" wheel power drive. The front wheel drives really suck and are hard to keep straight when putting "stripes" and "designs" on the turf. Mowing the tree wells (circle around base of trees) is more difficult as well. Always bag the clippings when mowing. The customer is paying for a clean, manicured yard and that is just what you should provide. Get a quality lawn edger as well. A sharp edge on the walkways and driveway gives that added clean cut appearance after you have left the property. And make sure to blow or sweep off the concrete walks, driveway, and patios of the spent clippings that have been thrown out from under the deck before leaving (this needs to be done lastly). And when you get the mower be sure that it is a 4 cycle engine (straight gas, no mix) it makes for faster and easier work not having to mix oil and gas all the time. Hope this has been helpful and good luck on your new venture. You will get a great sense of accomplishment from this type of work, not to mention a whole bunch of knowledge about turf, trees & shrubs, diseases, and insects. The best part is the $money$ that can be made if you get good at it...

...Added Info: You don't want to charge by the sq.ft. for your services. It's better to charge by each individual property. Naturally, the bigger the square footage of turf, the more you will charge (time is money). The local economy and the type of neighborhoods you will be working in will have alot to do with your price range. Naturally, higher class homes will bring in more cashflow. A standard price would be $100.00 a month for edging, mowing, and blowing off of the property. Tell the customer that you will spend 1 hr a week doing the work, 4 times a month, which comes out to to 4 hrs total work time. Which means that you are working at a $25.00 an hour rate, which is pretty good money for a 16 yr old. This of course, is for an average size yard with around 2,000 sq. ft. of turf. If its less or more you can adjust the price accordingly (up or down).

I'm thinking of buying one on Craigslist for 550. If you know anything about it that would help me or have any other suggestions for riders 600 or under would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I bought one early 2004 to mow a 3/4 acre lawn. Back then it was close to $1,100 for a 42" cut, 18.5 HP single cylinder engine with manual transmission. It got an oil change every year & was fine until late last year when oil consumption went wild. It was a bad head gasket. Replacement engines were $700 or more, so after a little research I bought the gasket for $8 and spent a couple of hours doing it myself (a first for me in engine repair, it was nice to have vids on Utube to learn). It runs as good as ever. The mower is on it's 3rd battery... I finally broke down and got a battery tender plugged in for a maintenance charge and that has helped a lot.

So if the mower looks like it hasn't been driven off a cliff, starts easy enough, moves & cuts it's probably going to suit your needs. If it needs parts, that's another story depending what it has to have.

What are the steps to building a patio? Here is my assumption, maybe you can add to it or tell me I'm crazy.

1) Use a Sod Cutter and clear away 2" of Sod.

2) Lay Down Pea Gravel

3) Lay Down Sand

4) Place the Pavers, Bricks, whatever down

5) Cover the patio with sand

6) Use one of those vibrating things that look like a lawn mower without wheels to pack down the sand in between the bricks.

7) Sit back with a Mint Julip on your new patio.

ON FINAL 2 INCH OF 50/50 SAND AND PEA GRAVEL, MIXED TO 20 % WITH CEMENT (JUST SPREAD CEMENT IN SAND/GRAVEL MIX AND RAKE IN) THEN LEVEL OFF...THEN COMPACT HARD UNTIL PLATE COMPACTOR STARTS BOUNCING ON SURFACE..
AFTER THAT, CHECK FOR DESIRED LEVEL/FALL .....RAKE AND BALANCE UP THE AREA AND COMPACT AGAIN AS PREVIOUS,.., IF NEED BE UNTIL PERFECT..(THE CEMENT IS TO STABILISE BASE), AND USE COMPACTOR IN A CRIS-CROSS PATTERN,ALTERNATING DIRECTIONS AFTER EVERY 2ND ROUND AND NOT JUST COMPACT ONE WAY.
THE RESULTS OF FINAL COMPACTION SHOULD BE ROCK HARD).

THEN FILLGAPS WITH FINE GRIT OR GRAVEL, THE GRIT SHOULD FLOW INTO GAPS LIKE BIRDSHOT.

NOTE, I CHOOSE ONLY TO USE THE ABSOLUTE MINIMUM OF SAND AS IT SHRINKS AND SETTLE WHEN DRY, AND AFTER PAVING I ALSO AVOID COMPACTING THE PAVERS ETC....AS IT WILL MAKE A TOTAL MESS, DUE TO BASE BEING SO HARD.
THE ADVANTAGE OF GRIT OR SUPER FINEGRAVEL BETWEEN PAVERS ETC DOES NOT BLOW AROUND NOR SETTLE .

How do I dispose of a non-functioning lawn mower?

I have an electric, battery rechargeable lawn mower that won't take a charge anymore. I checked with my local service store but it's more expensive to fix it than to just buy a new mower so I've decided to go with the new mower. Now I don't know what to do with this old one, specially given it's electric and you shouldn't throw away batteries... what to do?

Answer
If you have a neighbor with a really bad lawn, you could just leave it on the front yard at 3AM...

Just kidding.

Most communities have hazardous household waste faculties that accept things like this from residents. Normally, you can just drop it off.

However, that battery is replaceable- you can look up the manufacturer and part number on the battery and just change it out. Thare are a lot of places on the Web that you can buy batteries from.

If you go this route, the only thing you need to bring to the hazardous waste people is the old battery.

Some folks here have suggested that you leave it outside with a sign that says, "free." I've had much better results putting things outside with signs that say, "$10"

I was cuting grass when it started to sprinkle.I kept going and it kept sprinkling. Finally i decide to stop because i thought it was going to start raining. But what would have happen if i would kept going and my lawn mower would got wet?

Answer
Nothing really, grass tends to stick to the under-body of the mower when it is wet and this will in-turn slow the blade resulting in an unclean cut and a general loss of power.

How to get rid of the grass smell of a lawn mower?

tech-80

I recently got a riding lawn mower and our garage has started to smell like decomposing grass. I currently use a mulching plug. I just cleaned off all the grass on the bottom of the mowing deck and i think it helped. I just don't want to have to hand clean the deck every month.
Any tricks to help get rid of the smell and/or the grass?

Answer
The trick to get rid of the decomposing grass smell, is to get rid of the decomposing grass, hehehe.

A good sprayer will do the trick...one on a 'wand', so you don't have to bend over to clean out under the deck. The more pressure you can put out with the sprayer, the better. Then let the deck 'air dry' before you put it away in the garage.

Grass tends to stick more, when it's wet. So, another trick is to mow only when it's dry. Since grass has water in it, you don't want to wait too long between mowing either, especially when you're using a mulching blade/plug. A good rule of thumb to follow when mowing, for a healthy lawn, is to cut no more than 1/3 of the length of the grass off. I'd recommend 1/4 when using the mulching system. This lets your 'mulched' grass come out finer, and is more easily 'absorbed' back into the lawn as fertilizer. If your grass is 4 inches high, then cut only 1 inch off, etc. This means you'll be mowing more often, but you'll get a much better look, and a healthier lawn. If you cut too much off at once, the lawn can actually go into 'shock', and the grass will turn a bit brown, or 'tan' color along the edges of the grass blades. (means your lawn won't look as green).

Have Fun

best lawn mower for your money image

Graciela,

My aunt offered me a good deal on her old riding lawn mower and I really want to buy it. Unfortunately, I have no place for it. My garage is too small, and our cars barely fit already. I have no shed and can't afford to build one. Are there any other options?

Answer
Sheds really aren't that expensive. you can pick up a cheap DIY plastic shed for very little money.

if that still isn't an option, go with a tarp. just park the thing next to your house and lay the tarp over it. if it's windy, make sure to stake it down.

How can i make my lawn mower faster with out having to buy anything?

i have a lot of stuff laying around my yard but i want to make my lawn mower go faster without spending a lot of money

Answer
Easiest part make sure air filter is clean, then I have searched Yahoo here's the most important part"http://www.weekendgardener.net/lawn-mowers/sharpen-lawnmower-blade-70607.htm" More than that will take carburator adjustment or cleaning. The first two should help with the speed of your mowing.

I've been wanting to start a mowing business but I've been having trouble figuring out the prices for mowers. You can buy a nice self propelled 21" mower for $300 but then if you want a 32" mower suddenly the price shoots up to about $1500. Why do lawn mowers cost so much? You can buy a riding lawn mower for the price of a 32".

Answer
Both of those prices are for "homeowner quality" mowers. Meant to be used once ,maybe twice a week to mow a small to medium sized yard.
If you do use them for your mowing business, figure on only getting one summer out of them.
Comercial mowers are way more expensive than the prices you have posted, but will last several years .
Just starting out, try to find some good used commercial mowers. Go talk to your local mower shops, look on craigslist, look for mowers at auctions.

Answer
Mower manufacturers have mowers they usually sell to home owners, or people that just mow for themselves. Then they have their "commercial" line of mowers, always more expensive. Just know, they all make the grass shorter.
Commercial units are usually built a bit stronger. Maybe a better motor with longer maintenance times, heavier built decks and blades, bigger gas tanks, oil filters to increase longevity. If I was starting out, I would go to craigslist(dot)org. I have always found several mowers, riders, commercial, and push mowers, as well as trimmers, trailers and any other tool you might need. Most people live close to 2 to 4 markets of CL that offer a variety of products.
So, buy used, as you develop the business, you will see and appreciate specific models and brands, then you can splurge on your favorite power tool.
