My brand new lawn mower quit and it won't start. Any idea why?

Lisa S

A few days ago I bought a brand new Craftsman lawnmower from Sears. I followed the directions, put gas in it, the oil, and started it up. I mowed one length of the grass and then the mower kind of slowed down and then quit. I haven't been able to start it since. It's brand new. What the heck is wrong? It is not a self-propelled mower. And no, I did not hit anything while mowing and it has gas.

Answer
Check the spark plug and make sure it is still conected (very unlikely to happen but simple to fix). If you mixed the gas and oil that would mess up the machine. Was it new gas? (I am not saying you did any of these but you may be asked these questions at the store or service center)

Clean it up to get the grass clippings off, look to see if it has any sign of wear, if it doesn't go back to Sears with it and say it never started and they have to take it back (if you have your receipt), once you have actually ran the mower they will make you go to a service center for it for waranty work and probably a 2 month wait for the mower. Lawn mowers are what are considered manufacuturer waranty products, which means the stores won't take them back unless they are getting credit from the manufacturer

I would suggest asking for a refund and go to a smaller hardware store or a lawn mower dealer. They usually do the following,
1) know the real answers to your questions, and not tell you what you want to hear, so that you will buy the most expensive products they sell. and will ask questions of you to find what you need (not what they want to sell to you)
2) assemble the mower for you.
3) gas and oil it for you and "test fire" it to make sure it works.
4) show you how features work such as a mulcher, grass catcher, how to adjust the height of the wheels
Describe your yard, how big it is, how flat or "hilly" it is, who will be using it, how often you will be mowing the yard, ask about the waranty, do they service it there? if not, where is the nearest service center.

riding lawn mower?

How many HP do you guys suggest for a riding mower to cut a 1/2 acre of lawn, the yard has alot of rolling hills with a few fairly steep climbs.I was thinking Husqvarna, what do you think?

Answer
Husqvarna makes the Craftsman mowers. MTD makes Cub, White, Troy-Built, Yard man, Yard Machines, Bolens, and the new Toro tractors. The John Deeres in Lowes and Home Depot are made to last 250 hours and be tossed. That is all the "discount" brands.

If you are looking for a mower go to a dealer, even if its John Deere. The dealer can service the machine after the sale. Most will even deliver for free. They know the machines and the feature that will work for your conditions and situation in your yard. You are going to talk to someone who knows exactly what they are talking about, and not someone who will be in paint tomorrow.

I would recommend a Snapper of a Simplicity. Simplicity has a mower called the Regent that is 18 HP with a 38" deck, and sells for $1999. You are not going to find many machines under 15 HP.

Hope this helps

Im looking to buy a riding lawn mower?

07JAB88

I would like to buy a riding lawn mower. I would like it to last a LONG time (6 years and up. low maintenance) What is a good brand to buy? Please give me advice based on experience or accurate knowledge. I would like to spend $1200 or less. Thanks for any help given.

Answer
Hey 07JAB88 ,

Home Depot has a brand MTD, they are inexpensive compared to the a John Deere. The MTD will last 6 years easy if you take care of it, do not leave it outside in the rain. I had one for 3 years, when I moved I sold it for nearly what I paid for it. It looked great, worked great, cut great, the bags held up and it was still shiny. Here is one for $200 bid on e-bay right now.

Check out the Ariens 54 In. Deck 25 HP Kohler Engine Hydrostatic Yard Tractor at the second and third sites. Apparently time has passed and Home Depot sells the Ariens not MTD. These will do the job. Just take care of it.

Just sharing: A Reel type mower makes better cuts on the blades of grass, so looks better - so I put one at the end.

My new lawn mower won't stay on!!! Help!!!?

partytime

I bought a brand new lawn mower its a honda i think, push mower, and it has a choke. but every time i can get it to start, i can mow just one strip of yard and it dies! i've checked the gas and oil and its got enough, i've even changed the spark plug! i need help to what this is, i'm tried of paying the neighbor to cut my grass!

Answer
does it keep running if you leave it over pavement
say.....2 or 3 minutes?
if so it may be that you are trying to cut too much grass at once for the power of the mower
raise the height of cut to the tallest level
try mowing at that height,
go slowly and empty the bagger often
then lower the height and mow the yard immediately in another direction. keep mowing and lowering until you have the grass at a height that is better for the grass and works for the mower
when the grass is so tall and thick that it builds up under the cutting deck it slows the blade and bogs down the motor which can make it die.
if the grass is hydrated but the turf is not wet and soggy it will cut cleaner and easier.

what kind of grass is it?
zoysia and bermuda are extremely thick and hard to cut right now
like cutting a phone book with fingernail scissors

I'm planting zoysia grass in Georgia, and my original lawn has a lot of weeds (real fat leaves).?

linktoterr

Will the new plugs kill out the weeds or can i use weed killer on the weeds while the zoisia is trying to take root and grow?

Answer
Make sure the label reads "kills the weeds and not the lawn" before you spray. That grass is pretty hard to mow. It's hard to push anything with wheels through it. I use a self propelled walk behind mower for part of mine and the rest of the half acre I use a riding mower. The roots are deeper than other grass and also very thick and tough. I never water mine.

In market for riding lawn mower. Suggestions please?

Trav9536

I've done some research, and I'm thinking I like Cub Cadet or John Deere. I don't want to spend any more than $2000 for the tractor and bagging attachment. Will the cheapest models hold up on a 1/4 acre lawn? Do you have experience with your Deere or Cub Cadet? I can perform maintenance and repairs, but I want something that will last a while without much trouble. Does anyone have a cheaper brand (Yard Machines etc) they are happy with?

Answer
They're both good mowers as are several others. I've had a couple of Craftsman that I'd swear by. They've got a good one on sale right now for about $1700 w/bagger.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/s_10153_12605_Lawn+%26+Garden_Riding+Mowers+%26+Tractors_Lawn+Tractors+%28less+than+2+acres%29#viewItems=40&pageNum=1&sortOption=ORIGINAL_SORT_ORDER&&filter=Accepts+Bagger|Included&lastFilter=Accepts+Bagger

Cub Cadet has a good deal on this one. w/ a bagger it'll be about $2K
http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_14101_534208_16203_-1_600000_33810
I'm thinking that'll be my next mower or one like it.

John Deere is always good but overpriced in my opinion.

All of these mowers are rated for up to 2 1/2 acres. Your 1/4 acre lot should be a piece of cake. Just remember, sharp blades and dry grass.

Whatever your choice, check out warranty, service availability, cost of maintenance (blades, belts, battery etc.) some mowers can be very expensive to maintain. Is there a dealer local?

My first Craftsman lasted 10 years and was still running pretty good in fact when I got a new one. It's 10y/o now (another Craftsman) and I'm looking. I have about 2 acres to mow. Just keep the air filters clean and oil fresh.
I also have a C/man self propelled walk behind that I mow the front with (lotta stuff to mow around, flower beds, etc). It's 5 years old and still runs like new practically.

Availablity Of Manual Lawn Mowers?

David Clar

Are these still available?

Answer
If you know the manufacturer/model number of your mower, you can go to the manufacturer's website. If the mower is over 15-20 years old though it probably won't be available. I bought a 2005 troy bilt mower in a private sale and had to go download the manual so I could replace the belts

Answer
Noma made some for lowes, never heard of ayp making them for them, but mtd has certainly made some as well.... (noma was shortly bought soon after by murray and discontinued, so you may not know them)... if it is a noma (I own one), there should be a silver sticker on the frame, around the hitch point at the back, if its still stuck on. YOU MAY get the manual then from the murray website... MAY though since they went under and acquired by briggs, only parts are being made, if its a mtd the mtd website ( www.mtdproducts.com ) you might find it there...

Which walk-behind lawn mower has the largest blade / cutting area?

Neerdowell

I need a new lawn mower, as both my riding mower and push mower are requiring too many trips to the repair shop to stay running. I can't afford a new riding mower, but I hate the small cutting area that a walk-behind mower usually offers. Is there a walk-behind lawn mower out there that has an extra large blade that provides a much larger cutting area?
Okay, I guess I should've said consumer grade walk-behind mower. If I could afford a commercial grade walk-behind mower, I would be able to afford a consumer grade riding mower, which I can't.

Answer
There are several brands of lawn mowers that have a 22" cutting area. That is about as large as you will find on a standard push lawn mower. From there, they go down to 21, 20, and even 17". You can find one of the 22" mowers at Home Depot or Lowe's or some other store like that. To get any larger than that would require that you buy an industrial mower or professional grade mower, which as you said you can't afford.

how to put a lawn mower motor on a go kart?

chumpcorn2

i have a old lawn mover it has a 319 cc motor and i have a go kart frame it will fit put how do i put it to gether

Answer
Your typical lawn mower engine won't work because of the vertical crank shaft. You would need a way to transfer the engine output from vertical rotation to horizontal rotation.

If you try and run a vertical shaft motor on its side, it won't get the proper lubrication and will quickly fail. See the first link below to understand why a vertical shaft motor won't work for your application.

You need a horizontal shaft motor like the ones used in a roto tiller or a snow blower. These will also have more horse power than a lawn mower motor.

The second link below has lots of different new small engines. If you have a Harbor Freight store near by, you will find horizontal shaft engines there cheaper.

If a new engine is out of your budget, watch the classified section of your local news paper. Watch for a used roto tiller or a snow blower. You may also want to checkout the local yard sales for these items. For a go kart, look for something with at least 8 horse power.

You also need some sort of clutch mechanism. These typically use a centrifical clutch.

The third link you will find clutches. Without a clutch, there is no way to disengage the power to the wheels. There would be no way to start or stop and keep the engine running. The torque converter setup is the best way to go, but may be out of your budget. A centrifical clutch will cost you about $30. A torque converter setup will cost you about $225.

The third link also has lots of accessories you might need like motor mounts, chains, brakes, tires, steering, etc.

Old reel lawn mower?

pickles

I only have the mower part. It is very old and needs sharpening. I do not have a handle. How can I find one? Can I use one from a regular push mower?

Answer
Most of those old handles were made using hickory wood. They fit into the metal frame of the mower and were held in place by through bolts. The "T" handle across the top was a lathe turned handle that usually fastened to the upright using a "U" type of fitting that was also through bolted. Unfortumately, replacement parts for these old mowers are no longer made commercially.

If I were in your situation, I would look up a local home woodworker. If you live in a small town, you probably already know who that might be. If you live in a city, you might want to ask around at the lumber company or look in the newspaper classified ads. In any event, a woodworker might be willing to make you the handle you need for a nominal fee.

There are all kinds of websites for collectors of "vintage lawnmowers. You might find some of them interesting. A Yahoo search for "vintage lawnmowers" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 904 results.

Good luck with your restoration project.

Which is cheaper in the long run? An electric or gas lawn mower?

Sunshine S

Also, what are the pros and cons of each? We just purchased our first home and need to mow the lawn ASAP, but have no clue where to start looking for the information to help us make a decision. Thank you!

Answer
There are definitely pros and cons of each. I will not buy an electric cord mower because of the cord dragging around the yard and the fact that they are less powerful (lower hp, really lower torque). When your grass is thick or very long the extra power from a gas mower is definitely appreciated. I have not tried the battery powered and seems to be a novel idea because of the low noise. Not sure about the power associated with the battery powered. I have owned several gas mowers and have not ever had to mix oil and gas for the mower, so really just keeping a gas can around is the only issue.

The things I would look at is the size of your yard, any hills, location of electrical outlets.

Which lawn mower blade sharpener fits my mower ? Help me out !!!?

Sonia W.

Last year, I bought a Greenworks 25022 electric lawn mower from http://www.getlawnmower.com/electric-lawn-mower/ . I got very good service in last season.

I think I need to sharpen my lawn mower blade this year before use. I want to buy a lawn mower blade sharpener, but I am unable to choose the right one. Please suggest me which lawn mower blade sharpener will fit my mower. or you may tell me which factors should I consider before buying a mower blade sharpener.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
electric lawn mowers, don't have sharpeners ,they are throw away when well used, this is why they are so cheap you throw them out at end of summer and buy new one in the spring
try a grindstone if you must try to sharpen it

How do you get a lawn mower tire to go back on the rim?

Pamela

I have a flat tire on my riding lawn mower. It's off the rim about a inch. I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. It's one of the back tires.

Answer
first it probably came off the rim from low air. you need to fix the leak first. you need to remove the tire from the machine, take the tire off the rim with a screw diver(being careful not to poke the tube) this should be easy as it's already coming off.fill the tube with air and hold under water in the sink. patch kits are available at hdwre stores or circle k. after repair or if tube is not flat to start you need to release air and push tire back in place with fingers until it gets tough then use regular screwdriver to finish. fill with air. easier to take to tire repair 4or 5$ good luck.

polyurethane foam in lawn mower tire?

RONALD M

is there a name brand foam in a can that will work to inject in a small tire / wheel that will not be used on highway.i know there are commercial co. out there to do this. has any one had good luck with doing it them self.
no fix a flat it makes a mess and that's about all.

Answer
MOTHER'S is the answer to the question. The Mother's company makes a tire filling foam. It is not a fix-a-flat type thing that only seals air leaks, it is an expanding foam material that fills the entire tire and makes it sort of a semi-solid rubber donut. It'll never go flat again. You can buy the stuff at Wal-Mart, Pep-Boys, and most farm tire and equipment retailers as well as racing and car enthusiast suppliers..

what is the best brand of riding lawnmowers?

kclarot24

Answer
The quality of John Deere isn't the same as it once was. It's still a good mower, but I wouldn't consider it best.

Sears are a great value for the money. although a lot depends on which engine you go with.

Cub Cadet is another excellent mower. They are a little higher on the price scale than Craftsman, but worth it.

The best I've ever used is Simplicity. They are quite a bit higher in price, but they are dependable, comfortable, and powerful. They are very easy to work on, as far as tensioning belts, changing blades, etc. A true quality mower. Hope this helps.

what is the resale value for a LT180 john deere riding mower?

rickey

it is a 2002 model and have a 17 hp engine on it. The motor have approximately 400 hrs on it and the deck and body of it is in excellent condition. The transmission is a hydro-static one. The tires are in good condition. The mower is clean and has been garage kept from day one.

Answer
Can't be answered here. Depends on where you are and what the local market is for used mowers.

Make believe you're trying to buy one locally and see what others are charging for similar items. Also check with a local lawnmower repair service for an opinion.

lawn mower for putting green.HELP!?

okay.my parents have decided to let me get a putting green for my backyard because we have the right soil etc and it will be relitivly in-expensive.but they are not paying hundreds for a putting green mower that will cut it at the correct hight.
i understand that you need a cylinder mower and not a rotary.i have looked at some basic cylinder mowers that are in-expensive but the problem is that they only cut down as far as 10mm.i need it to cut down to 4-6 mm for it to be the correct length.

so.im wondering,if you take the wheels off the mower (which cuts at 10mm)and put on smaller wheels..then it would be lower and cut at a lower hight..would that work?
need feedback.
Thanks!

How to start a small Lawn Care Business?

Kevin C

Hey there, I'm currently in college and am looking to start up a small lawn care business next summer. I've been working at Mcdonalds the past 2 years and won't be able to stand another summer in that place. Anyways, I've already got a truck and trailer and push mower and weedeater, so I need help picking out a mower. I'd probably look into zero turns but the prices seem pretty steep, even used. And I'm not sure about a regular riding mower, if itd be fast/efficient enough. I'd be mowing mainly large home gardens and maybe small pastures. I definatly dont have more than a grand to drop on a mower to start off with. What's a good mower I should start looking for and pricerange? Also is there anything that I might not be aware of yet? Anybody with some experience in this, help me out please, Thanks

Answer
Kevin start small and build up leave riding mowers and zero turn mowers alone .

Best advice i can give is to google your question and there is a lot of information out there read and adapt what suits you i had a look to many to link and if did you might not look at another one which would have been very handy. the main theme is start with what you have how not to get screwed another word not paid for your labour and tells what equipment to use etc.
