I don't want to spend thousands on a big mower or robot one. How can I attach a couple push mowers together so one is aheat of the other?

Answer
Jean Ann's idea was good, but even if that works (and you'll probably need to also bolt a stabilizing bar of some sort across the front and/or back to keep it from sagging in the middle), you won't be able to turn it properly.

Why not check classified ads, local bulletin boards, or craigslist for an affordable larger mower that you know works and is safe?

anyone own a small landscape buisness, how much to start it?

Dice K 12

How much money does it take to start a small one or two person landscaping buisness. this is without any college business credits. you figure one nice mower, leaf blower, weed wacker and all other necissary tools. how big a loan did you have to take out?

Answer
If you want to start a business you need commercial equipment. A commercial mower is a lot more than 2000. I recently bought a exmark turf tracer HP which isn't the biggest model made and it was about $6,000 When I bought a Kubota zero turn a few years ago it was 13,000 dollars. If you aren't doing commercial lots you don't need a huge zero turn. A walk behind will work fine with a stand on attachment so you don't have to walk. You have to locate a dealer that sells commercial mowers, you can finance the mower through them. If you want the best blower and weedeater you need to buy STIHL brand equipment. Our STIHL backpack blowers were 500 dollars and weedeaters were 2-300 dollars. Then you need your truck and trailer which could cost up to 60,000 dollars if you want a nice truck and trailer. I'd get a truck with a diesel engine in it, even though its more expensive the gas milage is better and they are a lot more reliable when you are going to be using them for heavy duty work. Then you need insurance which will be a few thousand dollars per year.

Lawn and Landscape work is a high demand industry. If you do good affordable work you will be fine.

Unless you already have contracts lined up you will need to advertise. People don't usually look in the classifieds first. They talk to friends/neibors who have had work done with a company and if that person was satisfied they will give the potential client your information and they will call you.

Tips for starting an independent lawn care business?

Mysterion

My brother and I are starting a small independent lawn care business doing things like cut grass, trim pushes, plant flowers, things like that. For anyone that has experience with a small business like that, do you have any tips? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I started my own business with purchasing a good used commercial walk-behind mower with a 48 inch wide deck, then a couple of regular lawn mowers & commercial string trimmers. You will also need a truck with four wheel drive and a trailer to carry all the equipment. The key to get your business going is advertising your services by word of mouth and local radio advertising, if you can afford the cost. I had my own business but it failed due to the competition who had money & resources and services that I didn't have because I was a one man company. You will find out that many people want their property landscaped and not just their grass cut & trimmed. The real money is not cutting grass, but in snow plowing if you live in an area that gets snow. I charged $35.00 to cut the grass of the average residential size yard, because that was the going rate across the board, but it varied in price if the yard was huge or very small. Watch out for your competitors they will cause problems for you, if they think you are a threat to their business. They use all sorts of shady tactics to eliminate competition from their area.

1. Is any form of heat treatment used on the mower blades?
2. Do both the standard mower and the mulching mower have a catcher?
3. How does the mulching feature work?

Answer
At one time I believe early mulchers had twin blades and no catcher.as they developed it seems bags went back to standard(optional), and the blades went single with a special shape that supposedly re cut (mulch) the grass as well. I have a craftsman and a Troy built-w/ bags (both mulchers) and though they do cut the grass finer-I cant find any real differance as I cant continually mow without bag( and when done- sprinkler heads cover w/the mulch :(

Difference between standard lawn mower and mulching mower?

John

1. Is any form of heat treatment used on the mower blades?
2. Do both the standard mower and the mulching mower have a catcher?
3. How does the mulching feature work?

Answer
!. All blades have heat treatment procedures.

2. By and large, most mowers don't have catchers. They're more expensive. More people choose the mulcher type mower to recycle the clippings as fertilizer.

3. As explained in an earlier question, the mulching mower keeps the side discharge opening closed to keep the clippings in the blade cavity longer. The mulcher blade has specially formed blade tips which create a lift inside the blade cavity. This keeps the clippings moving in the air longer, allowing a finer cutting of the clippings.

What's a cheap way to store a riding lawn mower?

Graciela,

My aunt offered me a good deal on her old riding lawn mower and I really want to buy it. Unfortunately, I have no place for it. My garage is too small, and our cars barely fit already. I have no shed and can't afford to build one. Are there any other options?

Answer
Sheds really aren't that expensive. you can pick up a cheap DIY plastic shed for very little money.

if that still isn't an option, go with a tarp. just park the thing next to your house and lay the tarp over it. if it's windy, make sure to stake it down.

Would this be a good way to make quick cash?

Mike Dicke

I'm lookin at bartering, or just buying and selling on craigslist to make some quick cash.

I was thinking, are lawn mowers alot cheaper in the winter? I'm thinking about going on craigslist in november and buying like $500-700 worth of push-mowers in the $25-75 range. I could clean em up a bit, then in february or march, put them back up for $75-125. The demand would probably be alot higher down here when the Texas summer hits.

I know I'd be sitting on my investment for a few months, but would it pay off?

Answer
Funny thing - the CURB ALERT section of Craig's list has shown me lots of items irrespective of season - and for no cost at all. I have also noticed that March, April and May are prime months for all sorts of garden-related 'stuff' to be left at the curb. Including several lawnmowers needing nothing more than a little bit of TLC and/or blade sharpening.

In theory, what you suggest is just fine. But the truly-cheap sorts will hunt down discards and trash-picks, do the work and realize the benefit without the middle-man. Those without necessary skills and also in need of bargains are your customer base - and these sorts can be very problematic. I would not want to have my home-address & phone number hanging out there as being responsible for this type of equipment unless I was absolutely sure that what I was selling was safe and reliable. Can you be sure of that?

I have a small back yard (20' x 30') and love the way the grass looks once it has been cut with a gas lawn mower. However, I want to get rid of the gas mower and considering a reel or electric mower. Would the reel mower give it the same look as the gas mower does? I have Zoysia grass. Opinions?? Thanks!

Answer
I highly recommend a McLane 17" front throw reel mower. With the grass catcher. http://buyapushmower.com/2009/12/21/mclane-17-inch-7-blade-front-throw-17-ph-7/
I've been using mine for over 7 years and is without a doubt the best reel mower out there. Easy to push and maintain. I Never use a rotary mower on zoysia grass. I own a maintenance company and only mow properties with Bermuda, zoysia, or paspalum grasses. It's perfect for areas I can't get a heavy mower into. My zoysia grass is maintained at 350 mm.
You will be able to get a closer, or lower elevated cut on your zoysia, which in my opinion looks better. You will be able to scalp your grass at the lowest setting to dethatch your lawn when needed also.
The first few cuts will be a learning experience and there will be bald spots on any areas where the soil is not level under the grass. Rolling it will solve that problem.

How could one learn to work on an engine?

best lawn mower canada on Best Lawn mowers in 2013 :: Top rated Lawn Mower reviews
best lawn mower canada image

celtica311

All engine types ranging from lawn mowers to trucks.
I know how engines work.

My school does not offer a course in any type of mechanics.

Answer
Get an auto mechanics textbook. Try the local library first. Also check the yellow pages; there may be a bookstore dealing with auto-related books, or go to car parts swapmeets. Read trade magazines like MOTOR. Asking at a local repair shop might get you a stack of greasy back issues. (I'm tempted to suggest a book called "The Joy Of Automobile Repair", but it's very dated, unless you only plan to work on cars from before the '80s. Worth reading, though, if you find it in the library. A lot of the basic stuff hasn't changed, and there's plenty of practical advice.)

Buy an adequate to decent set of tools. Craftsman is a safe bet. (In Canada, Canadian Tire has "Mastercraft", which has a replacement guarantee like Craftsman, and is frequently on sale with whopping discounts.) If possible, get a tool chest to store and organize them.

Hang out and help a more knowledgeable friend, family member, or neighbour. You can pick up a lot of useful tips. If possible, get a part-time job, or even work for free at a shop under a real mechanic.

Buy a project car, truck, bike, or lawnmower, and get it running. You can probably score a non-running mower or garden tractor for nothing: Place a "wanted" notice on Freecycle or a local bulletin board. Or bicycle around the neighbourhood, and if you see something neglected in a yard, knock on the door and ask.

Download the English TV show "The Garage"... while there's a lot of pointless drama, they do show some real life vehicle problems and the joys of fixing them.

Can my lawn mower cause a fire?

Nicole

I just finished mowing my aunt's lawn for her. The lawn mower was still hot when I put it in the garage. But, I closed the garage and left. Is there any chance for a fire or anything bad happening?? Thanks.

Answer
Nicole

Good question, I used to wonder that myself, until I found out first hand. I was in the buisness of cutting lawn for people, just myself and my pick-up truck. I was cutting my first lawn of the day. The mower was working hard because the lawn was large, and the grass was tall. I sensed that the engine was getting hot, but I didn't think it would catch on fire.

I had stopped the mower to go to my pick-up when the coustomer started yelling for me. My mower was burning! The engine had gotten so hot, it lit the dry grass on top of the deck on fire. Wow! I managed to get it out before the whole thing blew up, and I finished the lawn, but it was a really, really close call. The mower suffered 3rd degree burns on the deck. I had to spray paint it later to make it look better.

So the answer is Definetly YES, a lawn mower can cause a fire. Once your done, they should be cleaned, top and bottom. Then allowed to cool down before stored in a garage. It dosen't take more than 10 minutes for a lawn mower to cool down. So theres no big rush.

By the way, good for you for cutting your Aunties lawn!

I have a average weed eater pushing lawn mower and someone want's me to mow their 2 acres of land.
I have read around and it was said most push lawn mowers hold about a gallon or so.
I was wondering about how many times " roughly " would you expect to fill up while mowing the lawn?

Answer
2 acres with a push lawn mower? I cut that much lawn with a riding tractor and dont like to do it...most push lawn mowers dont hold a gallon of gas...maybe 1/4 gallon tops...so maybe 2-3 fill ups would do it...

What ground cover can one use to replace grass in the yard? Too much grass to cut....?

Higgy Baby

Too much grass to cut for me at my age and health. I have a 3/4 acre yard and my mom next door has the same. I have a rider mower- but its still too much for me.
Hiring a lawn service is out of the question- in mid summer grass needs cutting every 5 days.
I believe my best route is to shrink the size of the grass part?
edit: and Magnum is gone.

Answer
Ground covers can be expensive and also may require maintenance depending on type and where you live. You could consider planting trees that have a large canopy. Plant them close enough and the grass will not grow below them. As you see in wooded areas. Another option is to create large bed areas and landscape with low maintenance plants. Preferably using as many natives as possible. This will reduce the grass area. If the it is the back area you could consider putting in a pond if it is allowed. The pond could go between the two yards or just one.

How does a Fuel Pump in a Lawn-mower continuously provide fuel to the combustion chamber?

Paul

When you crank (pull) start a lawn-mower, it creates electricity to get a spark. It also spins the pistons in the combustion chamber. How does it provide enough electricity at the beginning to continuously burn and keep the pistons going?

Answer
its a magneto style ignition. passing a magnet in front of it immediately causes spark when you pull start it, you turn it roughly about 300 rpm's this is way more than enough to get it started

a carburetor provides the fuel

depending on the application depends on the style of carb. A pulse style ( phasing this out ) or a float style

the 11 o'clock news or something. She has really been fighting sleep here for the past week or so, and around 7 she gets fussy...rubbing eyes...etc. and if I rock her she will fight sleep and kick against me, in crib she will cry...this starts around 7 and continues for a couple hours till she is exhausted. She used to be out by 7ish and now she is tired but wont let go. So last night I do the whole "put her down before she gets real tired" thing and same scenario and then a fight ensued between hub and I because he says "she is not a robot and if she wants to stay up late let her." Yeah, fine and all but her sitting on the couch watching Letterman w/ her dad is not the way I want to do it and I think that her getting used to this is attributing to her fighting sleep...she is getting used to falling asleep on the couch for the past few days and it is getting worse...and she is exhausted!!!! But continues to fight...and bedtime has turned into a 4 hour long battle (already)....
...and to let you know how last night went...lets just say I woke up this morning w/ my dear daughter asleep next to me in my bed. I am all for some that co-sleep, but I REALLY WANT her to be able to sleep in her crib soon and be able to let herself fall asleep when she is tired...and before the part where she gets overly tired. What am I doing wrong?? She is not 2....she is only 4.5 months and still sooooo little. But when she cries and I go check on her every few minutes she will scream (in a happy way) stop crying and kick all around like "get me get me get me" and I do....

I beleive the baby is in control and will do what the baby wants and there is nothing I can do about it .......
I am not an expert in babies and sleep and this is our first (and hopefuly only??)
sometimes when I get too tired dealing with my son,if he will let me I will let him rest on my lap or beside me in the recliner and watch tv until he gets tired enough for bed .....
it can get really stressful between a couple with different attempts at the same end which seems like we are fighting against each other . both trying to do their best the only way they can think of ......
just remember you are both dealing with an insane situation and possibly you are both a little insane yourselves right now ...

How best to approach a hill with a gas lawn mower?

best lawn mower for steep hills on farm with terrific views, and kindly folk running it. Views mean hills ...
best lawn mower for steep hills image

tigrillen

Part of a lawn I have to mow is on a hill, more precisely a fairly steep short berm. I notice that my gas lawn mower (toro brand, 4 stroke engine) has problems with it and tends to eventually stall and definitely burns more oil. Changing the landscaping to not-lawn is not an option. I am wondering if there are differences if I approach the hill sideways or better from top or bottom? Sorry if that is a stupid question but I am pretty clueless about gas engines in general.

Answer
Hi, tigrillen. Not a stupid question at all. Two things, one being the mower.

Some old Toros actually had an oil pump in the engine, while their standard mowers these days do not. On a steep slope, the new ones may have some oiling issues as a result. I used to keep an older Lawn Boy with a two-stroke running just for this issue. Lacking that option, you might even consider using a line trimmer to keep things neat, rather than a mower (gets pretty good with practice).

Second thing is that approach with a mower. If the slope is steep enough to potentially roll the mower when trying to go across the slope ("traversing"), have to just go up and down. Then the issue is not slipping when coming down and getting your foot under the mower deck. (A relative is missing a couple of toes from doing that.) Don't mow damp turf (i.e., avoid a lawn "water slide"), wear good shoes, and stay a little off to one side. And keep kids and pets well away while doing this.

What is the best mower to use on a very steep slope in my yard?

lawn mower

I am in the market for a new lawn mower. I want to buy one that can handle a hill that is 145 feet wide and goes up 20 feet over a 40 foot span...it's very steep. Is there a self-propelled mower that I could buy that can handle this job, or should I give in and hire a lawn service?

Answer
Get a Honda self-propelled walk behind mower. A 4 cycle lawnmower is better for steep hills, been doing this for 25 years. Anything else is big or too expensive, like a riding mower 54inch cut, you can't roll it. When using a riding mower, ride up and down the hill diagonally each way and everytime for the best and safest cuts.

We have a Troy Built riding lawn mower that needs some engine work. We don't feel like messing around with the repairs, so we were just going to sell the body.

What would be a reasonable price to ask for?

Answer
I like the other answer about subtracting 10% for each year and then the cost of the repairs - but I would argue that you may still have trouble selling it at that price.

When I put myself in the buyer's position, I can't help but think that there should also be an additional incentive for me to purchase a non-working item. Yes, theoritically, I would be made whole by deducting the cost to repair - but that is just an estimate. If I'm going to take the additional risk of buying a non-working item then there should be a little extra cushion in it. If for nothing else than to protect me in the event that the repairs go over budget.

How about
- Take 10% off for each year
- Take off the cost to repair
- Take off an additional 5 to 10% since it isn't currently working.

I ask you Ladies, how many of you have spent a good 30 minutes in a hardware store like Sears just looking at all the nice shiny tools and riding lawn mowers. Thinking to yourself, "Yeah, that's going to be the next sweet purchase I make".

Answer
Wait, men are different from women?

NO WAY!

I don't believe you.

What do women think about products that are supposedly designed for them, but just coloured pink!?

Q. Hey, i need some opinions here!

I'm currently studying design at uni, and for my final year project, im designing a lawn mower specifically for women! But when people design for women they seem to simply make it pink..... is this fair? Surely there's more to women than pink! Some opinions would be great :) What elements that are specifically female could I consider?

:)

Answer
I'm a man, and I know my ladyfriends get a kick out of the fact they can keep a set of pink tools around, and no man will steal them, in fact, most men don't want to even use them. It's the set of tools that always stays home.

A lot of lawnmower design is based on function, and safety. I'm scratching my head on how to make it stylish, too, and anything that did might make it less functional.

I like the idea of a portable lawn mowing cage, on wheels and with handles, that could be moved around a yard, and raise a few rabbits inside, with a built in "burrow" of plastic pipe, feeder, and waterer. It would be easy to maintain, and suitable for anyone to use, and without the need for fuel, or dangerous blades, either one. I'd make the frame of pvc pipe, and have netting cover the top, too, with access holes. See if you can make this idea work as a method of empowerment.

Why don't Canadians embrace agricultural communism?

best lawn mower deals canada on LAWN MOWERS CANADA Lawn Mowers
best lawn mower deals canada image

Eric S

In Manitoba, there's a group of people called "The hutterites" and they buy large parcels of farmland and live together on a colony. They believe in hard communal work and believe the only non-sinful way to engage in business is in the form of agricultural production and craftsmanship.

Everyone works a fair share, including the children and elderly.

They share everything they own and they diversify their crops, surprisingly using very little wheat and grain. Because they take care of each other as a colony, they don't even need insurance.

Why can't more Canadians embrace the Hutterian way of life?
They also have greater mental health stability than the entire rest of the outside world.
I read up that the Hutterites are very friendly to outsiders, even those who have nothing in common with them in the least. They also welcome potential converts who are given a trial period on the colony, but usually they can never make it to the commitment phase because they come to realize the sacrifice they are about to make.
David H, so your argument is agriculture was the solution, privacy was the objective. Also you can say the Jews in Europe were once of a separatist merchant class.

Similar objectives, different solutions? Could be a good book.

Answer
Good point! But if you drove up to a Hutterite Colony and said you wanted to join them, are you certain they would embrace you?

I personally think it is crazy that every one on my block has their own lawn mower, tools and stuff when in fact we could all save a lot of money if we shared those items. Like the Hutterites and the Mennonites. But for them, I think, it is more about religion and being apart from the mainstream. Mennonites in Northern Alberta didn't want their children attending public schools. They choose to be self sufficient and not having to deal with outside influences. They might not like everyone to adopt their values.

Why are bicycles so expensive?

aaa

It just seems strange to me that a decent new non-racing bike would cost as much as a top of the line motorized lawn mower.

I just want to get from here to there comfortably and quickly--I don't need an advanced science behind the design.

Am I paying for rare materials, an overly complex design, labor, status, or what?
Lawnmower analogy: mass produced, similar mass, similar material (to an extent), complex science behind design (motor...), mobile

D'uuuuuuuuuh.

Answer
Actually a whole bike for $300-$400 is a good deal.

Consider some individual part prices: road pedals can cost $300+. A pair of good road bike shoes: $250+. A component groupo (Dure-Ace): $3200 !! A set of road wheels (no tires or tubes, no freewheel): $1000+ (See links)

So you see, prices are all relative.

OK, so $300-$400 is relatively cheap ... but why are prices what they are?

Look at what determines prices. First there is design and testing. Then there is the cost of materials (some advanced alloys are very expensive) and manufacturing. Then packaging, shipping, distribution, markup at various stages (manu>distributor>retailer). And don't forget advertizing and liability insurance (e.g. for payouts to settle lawsuits when a part fails).

I'm sure I've forgotten something, but you get the point I hope. A $5 part (cost of materials) can easily be a $100 part by the time it gets to your local store.

Also, take into account that many of the costs are lump sum costs that have to be amortized over whatever number of units are sold (e.g. design and testing, advertizing, liability) so they add proportionally more to unit cost for low sales items.

Also look at labour costs. Many less expensive bikes and components are made in low labour cost areas (e.g.China, Malaysia, Korea) while more expensive ones are made in Canada, US, Gernamy, Italy, Japan, etc.

The reason the $300-400 bike can be sold at that price is because it uses stock components manufactured in huge numbers in a low labour cost country.

Market forces ensure that, overall, you get what you pay for. More expensive bikes/components invariably are stronger, lighter, and better performing. That said, you can choose where you want to be on the very wide price/performance scale.

Most advice to cyclists says the same thing, don't buy cheap, but don't pay for top end stuff unless you can benefit ... and are willing to pay the premium. As with most consumer products, beyond a certain point small improvements in performance come at a very high incremental cost.

Hope that helps.

Answer
Ohv=overhead valves operated by the cam from below
Ohc=overhead cam operating valves below it
Ultimately, horsepower is dependant on many other design factors. Sharpening varies dependant upon the cutter style, either rotary or reel-type. General rule of thumb is to simply re-edge the factory bevel-use a diamond file with slow, deliberate strokes, removing the least amt. of metal while providing a fresh cutting edge.

Lawn rake mowers, don't mow they do what they say they rake the grass/ leaves into the bagger on a tractor....

I would get a 42 inch craftsman, they are cheep ( craigslist) and parts are everywhere, also mine has a snow plow....bonus for winter time

Do you service your lawn mower and sharpen the blade at the end of the season or in the spring?

Q. Are you using a mulching lawn mower, or are you still bagging the cuttings?

Answer
I was always told by the old men at the hardware store in my city that all good tools would last nearly a lifetime if they were cleaned properly after each use. So, always did that....and my children were glad to get all my gardening and other tools when I sold my house....they had all been top quality tools when I bought them, and I cleaned and oiled them after each use.

So, I think you should clean & service your lawn mower at the end of the season.

I liked bagging the cuttings. Would edge the lawn first...then blow all the edgings into the lawn. Then I would run the mower over the lawn....and have very little to "blow" later....as the mower picked up all the edging debris that had been blown into the lawn. I liked having the grass clippings to take to a large compost area in my back yard....where I was like an old witch brewing up my "special compost".

I think leaving the clippings in the lawn leads to poor aeration of the soil....creates a thatched barrier prone to mold as it decomposes. Just my opinion.

It has been raining everyday for the past two weeks and the lawn is getting pretty tall, I have an electric lawn mower and want to mow but not sure if mowing when the lawn is wet from the rain is a good idea.

Answer
It's not a good idea to mow a wet lawn, regardless of what kind of mower you use. When cutting a wet lawn, the grass is "torn" rather than cut and it encourages disease. Better to wait until it's dry. I know you want to get out and cut that tall lawn, but, it's best to wait. But, if you HAVE to cut it, it shouldn't hurt you because the electric source is wherever the plug is.

Is it true that mowing wet grass will ruin the mower?

It has rained for 3 days and today it stopped. But it is supposed to rain tomorrow and the next day and then I have to work after that, so I'd rather mow it now while I have some time and the rain has stopped. But I've heard it is bad to mow wet grass .Is that true?

Answer
It will dull the blades, and dull blades will tear the grass rather than cut it. Tearing the grass isn't good for the grass.

In addition, what has been removed will clump on top of your lawn instead of dispersing throughout the lawn (green manure) if you have a mulching mower. If not, if your mower has an attachment that collects lawn clippings, it simply won't work.

Leave the mowing until the grass is dry. It will actually help your lawn, and in more ways than I've outlined above. Longer grass means longer roots, so that you don't need to water as frequently. That makes the grass itself stronger and healthier. As well, longer grass shades out sprouting weeds, again, for a healthier lawn.

The ideal length of grass in a lawn is 3 - 4", and when you mow, you should never remove more than 1/3 of the length of grass.

Just wait, you lawn will be fine.

by racing i mean any sport having to do with engines from lawn mower racing to monster trucks and anything in between. ex: motocross, rally, nascar , ANYTHING with an engine
and try not to put your own stupid opinons just cause you dont know about cars, and cant change the oil in your car

Answer
It has to be motor racing.

Formula 1 alone has 300 million fans worldwide tuning in just for ONE RACE.

There are probably double that just for Formula 1.

Then there's all the other sports combined (too many to even think about) Motor Racing. There's probably about 900million motor racing fans worldwide.

Does anyone know where to get cheap lawn mower parts at?
