What is the best riding lawn mower for under 2000 dollars. I have 3/4 of an acre to cut, no trees or hills?

robertkuhn

Answer
I bought a Cub Cadet last year and I love it. It was sitting next to a John Deer with the exact same engine and the same size deck but was $1,500 less. I mow 4 acres here and it cuts it great. I paid $1,919 for it, but for the size yard you have Iâd say a smaller one for about $1,200 would last you for many years.

Heavy Duty Headphones under $500?

Q. I've had my Soundlogic Dynabass headphones for over a year and they have great sound, they're the best headphones i've ever owned, but now they're starting to cut out more and more. i think it's time for a new pair, but i don't know what to get. I listen to mostly metal but i also listen to alot of electronic music as well (like dubstep) and then i dabble in some other genres too. the heaviest that i use my headphones is when im doing chores, especially mowing the lawn with a push mower. at first it was mainly when i would stick my ipod into my pocket and then start walking around and start mowing. but now it cuts out anytime. i think there's a loose connection either where the wire meets the headphone, or where the jack goes into the ipod. i know its not my ipod because recently i got some heavy-duty earbuds that aren't cutting out at all. so could somebody tell me where to get good, heavy-duty headphones that would last for a long time for under $500? or should i get another pair of Dynabass headphones? if u have any questions just let me know.
(p.s.) This Is not Fay Showalter asking this question. This is her son, Evan. So don't call me Fay. thnx
so i was gonna go with the v-moda, but i saw that that answer had 2 down votes. y is that? are those headphones not as good as they appear?

Burning oil in Lawn mower.?

balls

So I just got a lawn mower on craigslist, and I fixed it and now it is running good. But the one problem is it is emitting blue smoke, which means it is burning oil.

It is about 100 degrees here, and I used 10W-30 instead of the recommended 30SAE motor oil when it is over 40 degrees outside. Do you think this may be the reason it is burning oil, and maybe not my rings? Also there was oil on the air filter from the breather tube, do you think the oil from that is going through the carburetor and then its burning that?

Answer
Big Guy is right. However, I would suggest you pour in an egg-cup full of SeaFoam into the cylinder via the spark plug hole and let it sit for 24 hours. This will un-stick a stuck ring and clean out the valve seats too when you eventually pull on the cord.

what happens if i put vegeteble oil in a lawn mower engine?

in the crankcase

Answer
you will destroy the engine. Veggie oil is not made to withstand the friction of a combustible engine and the pistons will first overheat, then expand, then crack the cylinder walls finally causing the engine to seize. Other than that, not much

Help with buying a used lawn mower?

Can anyone provide some advice when looking for a used lawn mower ?

My current issues is both my mowers, are REALLY hard to start. Last year I could only get one to work, the year before the other one. But in every instance, it was a whole lot of pulling, like 10 minutes worth to get them started.

I have a small yard. Looking for a mulcher.

If I find a self propelled, is that something that's easy to deactivate ? Ive never used one and pushing my mower isn't as bad as the small spaces & turning & such.

Will big back wheels help or hurt ?

Found one on craigslist.

Troy-bilt push mower w/ Honda motor. Used for one summer.well maintained.

He wants $100.

Fair ?

Thanks for any & all help.

Answer
I know you said you are looking to buy a used one, and while $100 seems like a great deal, be cautious when you buy used machinery. While they are a bit more expensive, new mulching lawnmowers cost around $300-$500, which is pretty reasonable, they will come with a a warranty and will probably last you much longer.

And this way you can get it with the exact specifications YOU want instead of browsing through tons of different ones on craigslist.

You also mentioned that one of the problems you had was that it was hard to start. You might want to look into an electric starter as opposed to a manual one. They are roughly the same price and the ease to start them can make all the difference.

The benefits to having a self propelled lawnmower are that you don't have to push nearly as hard. You still have to push it though. It adds a lot of benefit on hilly areas and makes it a lot easier.

Lots of peopleI know have said that the Snapper mulcher works great, very reliable and is very reasonably priced.

I will put a couple links below for you to look at with all sorts of information on how to choose the right mower for your needs and a couple of different sites with reasonably priced mowers.

Good luck!

This may help:

It's for those with tecumseh engines.

I've replaced those before - unless you're mechanically inclined, have someone else. If you're adventuresome, and aren't afraid to tackle things like this, go for it!

Also, try here if this info doesn't do it for you: You can also "ask an expert" on these sites.

Trying to start a Lawn Mower business!?

Q. Hey everyone - I'm trying to start a business mowing lawns but I'm having some trouble. I don't really hv enough money to buy a 300$ lawn mower or a car that's big enough to hold it.

The most I could do is buy the black & decker trimmer and edger but I don't think that would help in mowing lawns.

Answer
lol, well there is no getting around buying a lawn mower to start a lawn mower business... don't get any electric weed eaters or edgers, even if its cordless, just don't. you don't need an edger at all. buy a straight shaft weedeater and you can edge with that, youtube and practice how to do it. i don't really know what to tell you about the mower, but u at least need a $300 mower. i know a kid that makes some real money with a $400 honda mower and a shindaiwa weed eater.

black and decker electric lawn mower MM875 not starting?

Guys, the mower wont start anymore, it was working fine last week, but now its dead. The grass was very wet when I mowed last time, could it be some short circuit or something, but it worked until I finished mowing the last time I used it.Any tips on how to trouble shoot it? I open the cover to expose the motor, but not sure how to test the electric supply.

http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-MM875-Electric-Mulching/dp/B00005AKZI
Ok I tested the supply using voltage tester and its reading voltage at the terminal connected to the motor. (red/black point). Now what? Is it the motor gone bad?

Answer
You will need a volt meter, or at the very least an LED voltage detector. It could be anything from the cord to the switch, from the switch to the motor connection, a burned out/ not seated brush, to a burned out armature. Link posted might better illustrate what your up against:

Answer
John Deere 757 Ztrak, John Deere 445 Tractor with a 60" mower deck, JOHN DEERE 430 DIESEL GARDEN TRACTOR ,John Deere 855 4x4 diesel compact-60" deck
John Deere 425 can be fitted as 60", 667A, 455, M665, 755 disel, 1445 - lots of them, but most popular seem to be the 425, 445, and 455.

is there a fast tractor that is powerful enough to go on a hill?

I saw these tractors that move really fast and they're wide. I want to know if there are any of these that would be powerful enough to go up a 35 degree hill
a lawn mower

Answer
Not sure what you are referring to a wide mower. There are basically five types of lawn mowers out there. You have a Push Mower, Ride Mower, Zero Turn Mower, Stand Behind Mower and a Tractor. Referring to a wide mower you may be thinking of a Zero Turn commonly referred to as Z-Turn because of their popularity in any Commercial mowing business. They move faster than any other Mower and can turn in any direction w/ out the back wheels moving a inch. (Zero Turn) Anyway i own a Mowing business and the only thing that can get on steep hills is a Tractor. Plus most have four wheel drive (4x4) and this makes it easier to climb the hill w/ out tearing up the customers yard. Because there are more than two wheels digging in the grass.

Some Commercial Zero Turns can get on decently steep hills. Keep in mind though they are made to finish a job quickly. Even a Commercial Mower made for this type of thing can't stand up to a 4x4 Diesel Tractor. Although w/ the Tractor you are stuck going up and down the hill. Where as w/ the Zero Turn (if the hill is not too steep) you can just ride side ways on it and get it done.

Should I replace my lawn mower or get it fixed?

My 7-year-old Toro self-propelled lawn mower's cord is off so the self-propelled part doesn't work, the engine will no longer start (it wasn't fully engaged last time I used it... it was running slow and loud with a lot of smoke and used a lot of gasoline). The last time I got my mower serviced it was over $100. The newer model Toro is $350-$400.

At this point should I just buy a new one with all those problems?

7 Years for a mower is great.

It sounds like it is time for a new mower.

Does he need a riding lawn mower?

T E

The general rule of thumb is that the lawn size is more than 3/4 acre.

He has a lawn of about 1/2 acre. However, mowing the lawn is getting tiring (although he used to mow the lawn) because he is 62 yrs old, and walking for 1.5 hrs on the lawn will be very tiring, especially in hot days. True, he can hire a landscape company to mow his lawn, but this is expensive. He figures out that the cost of his new riding lawn mower can be paid back in 2 years if he does the mowing himself this summer.

Answer
Of course he needs a riding mower. I'm only 49 and I wouldn't spend an hour and a half mowing the lawn. I have too much other stuff to do in a day.

Suggestions on a good lawn mower?

Kristen L

Hello, I need to buy a lawn mower for my yard. My yard is under an acre but is sloped in the front and has a slight hill in the back yard area. Most of the yard is grass and not tree, so there is a substantial amount of grass to mow. We now have a service that does it for us, but to cut costs and get exercise I am now looking for a new mower. my question is..what are the best brands of mowers that I can get affordably? I need one that is self propelled due to the hills and a side mulcher instead of a bagger would be helpful. I have looked into Lawnboy and craftsman and unsure of the quality. I would love to own a ride on mower however they are too pricey and my range is more like 350 and under. Also any tips if I try to find a used machine as far as what to look for? I have been looking at Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, and Walmart..unsure where it is best to buy one. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Toro Self Pace mower is the best thing out here in my opinion. My yard is about the same size as yours and I love it. It adjusts to what ever speed you want to walk, it is a mulcher, side discharge, and bagger all in one. Everyone sells them, If you have a Costco membership, they have it now.

Also when I do my yard it is equivelent to walking 3.5 miles... great exercise...

Answer
I think that the craftsman is a better quality lawn mower, however i have an 82 year old neighbor who has the other one that has large rear wheels, and i have tried it and it is fairly easy to use.
1) i would recommend craftsman if:
* you want for professional-looking job
*long lifespan of mower (higher quality mower)
*small Business or residential

2) I would recommend Briggs and Stratton if:
*you want to get id done quick and easy, and don't mind if your lawn does not look like it was done professional. (im pretty sure this one is lighter than the other one)

I hope this helps! :)

Value of a Lawn Tractor?

I purchased a 2006 Troy Built Lawn Tractor for $1,500.00 new from Lowes in 2006. I sent it into a repair shop in the fall of 2009 and when it was finished I didn't have the money right away. Long story short, my wife spoke to the owners wife who said they could store it until I had the money. (she was very understanding and said that they had just moved it to their large storage area) They had the tractor less than 6 months total and we have been in communication with them over that time frame. I called then 2 weeks ago and the husband/owner said "sorry, we sold it because you left it here". We didn't sign any papers, we have used them in past so they know we pay..can he do this? I am going to file in small claims but I can't figure the honest amount to ask the courts to make them give us. They never sent us written notice to come get it or else or anything..just said it was fine being stored there. We have a new baby and cannot afford to but another tractor. What can I do and what price is fair to ask court for?

Answer
Long time ago it might be something cool and expensive to have for a man's toy for his yard. Nowadays, you can get it from Lowe's home improvement for about a little over $ 1,000, and get a nice one. If you didn't have Lowe's charge card yet when you apply for it then you might get 10% off. The catch is pay off as soon as you could, and don't buy anything else with it. Then chances are you wouldn't come ahead with the deal. Enjoy your yard.

I ran my oil too low in my Husquavarna riding mower with a Kohler Cougar 20 motor model SV600. It got the shakes and I shut it down, then wouldn't start again. I was able to free it a little turning the flywheel but I can feel where it catches and still won't start on its own. Any ideas what my stupidity is going to cost me?

Answer
You'll have to find out what sort of repairs it will need. Call some places that deal with Husqvarna riding mowers and inquire some costs, labor and parts.

Lawn Tractor vs Good Hand Lawn Mower?

darrenm09

Would a lawn tractor be better to have or a good hand lawn mower for a 0.75 acre lot? new to the lawn mowing thing.

Thanks!
thank you all for your input

Answer
I highly recommend the hand mower.

TIME COMMITMENT:
I am able to mow my two acre lot with a hand mower in less than an hour, so mowing your .75 acre lot with a hand mower will be quick and easy. Using a lawn tractor wouldn't save you much time to mow a lot of your size.

PRICE:
Hand mowers are cheaper across the board. You can get a top of the line hand mower for $400, while a similar quality in lawn tractors will cost you at least $1200.

EASE OF USE:
Hand mowers are incredible simple machines; anyone can operate one with little instruction. Lawn mowers take considerably more skill and trial-and-error to be able to use.

MAINTENANCE:
This is where hand mowers truly shine.
- Hand mower parts are less expensive, from my experience. I've spent less than $30 on my hand mower, but a buddy of mine had to spend well over $100 repairing his lawn tractor less than a year after he got it when its engine failed.
- Because hand mowers are such simple machines, their parts hardly ever fail because so little goes on inside them. Lawn tractors are completely different beasts: they are essentially small, underpowered cars and thus A LOT can go wrong with them. In my mind, you should never need to worry about the transmission of your lawn mower going out.
- It's quick and easy to take a hand mower to a repair shop, but you need a large truck or even a trailer to bring a lawn tractor to a repair shop. That means more time and, if you don't have either a large truck or trailer, more money as you will need to rent one just to get it to the repair shop!

Pulley Swapping a Lawn Mower....?

Q. I am aware how to pulley swap a lawn mower to give it speed:
You want a smaller pulley on the transmission, bigger on the engine. But I was wondering how do you replace the pulley?
Do you weld? or do you unbolt, unscrew, etc something to remove the current pulley to replace it?

Answer
On lawn mowers the pulley is usually fastened to the shaft with a stud bolt that is fastened into the end of the shaft to hold the pulley in place.
If there is not a stud bolt in the end of the shaft the pulley is probably pressed on the end of the shaft. If it has been pressed on without a bolt to hold it in place you will need a pulley puller to pull the pulley off the shaft.
(If the shaft has a stud bolt the pulley can usually be removed without a puller by tapping it with a hammer around the perimeter.)
In either case you will have a key in the key way on the shaft to connect the shaft to the pulley.
Keep the old key and use it in your new pulley when you install it.

What Lawn Mower filter can I use.?

rosa404

I have a 21" weed eater brand Lawn Mower. I have looked for filters but every time i get one it doesn't fit. I got this Mower from Walmart. Does any one know what kind of filter i can use and where to get it. Thanks

Answer
Most of the weed eater brand lawn mowers you buy at walmart have a small briggs and stratton engine with the carb on top of the gas tank. This engine uses briggs and stratton filter #698369. Its kind of an odd shape, looks like a house with a hole in the middle of it. You can get this from walmart probably. If not, I know you can get it from home depot, lowes, or from the briggs and stratton website.

Also, make sure you put a little 10W30 motor oil on the foam filter and squeeze out the excess. The oil is what catches small dust and dirt particles.

If it's Craftsman, that Sears brand. You can contact them or contact a local mower repair shop. They should have more info on releasing the tension on the belt and maybe replacing it. I found a lawn mower question site as well:

Slum Lords. Do I have the right to take action?

cuteybaby_

So. Here is my story.

I moved in the my first ever apartment, I have been living here going on 3 years on March 10th, 2012.
My landlady at first was great, she was told me that if I was a few days late on payment, just to message her and she would have no problems. Also if I wanted to "fix" up the place she would take it out of our rent for the next months.

I knew moving into the place, it wasn't in that great of shape. It was an old home, made into a duplex. I had the top floor, there was another couple below me that had been living in this apartment for a few years. There is a busted window in one of the rooms that I noticed, I had asked in the beginning to have it replaced; but till this day never has. I understand now. She's a slumlord...and things started to happen rapidly with no actions.

First, my contract states, she provided a lawn mower and we the tenants were to mow. She had a rusted mower, I asked for it to be replaced. That was 2 1/2 years ago. It still has yet to be replaced.

That is a small tid bit of things wrong with this place..But my main concern now is. I have put up with so much things that have been addressed to have fixed, however never has there actually been any action towards any of it. And if so, its been months down the road. But now I have a problem that I don't think I could just let go, which I need someones help. So I turned to ask the question to you guys.

4 weeks ago, our drain in the basement started to back up. Now its complete sewage from our house, the pipes are copper and never been replaced in the house at all; they are busted. Because of this, the sewage from the house is poured into the basement. Well it had become so bad, that it flooded the basement to the stairs. It stayed like this for a week and a half. I called my Landlady, first time, no response. Next day. Called. She answer, saying she would have a plumber out as soon as possible. By this time, the stench from the basement of our own feces, urine, and other fluids of such started to seep into the pipes, making the bathroom, kitchen areas smell horrible. It cause us eventually to get sick. Plumber came two days later, drained our basement; but left what had been in the water sitting on the floor. Landlady calls, asking us to tell her what it looked like; I responded by stating someone of professional standards needed to be hired to disinfect the basement, the smell was still there. She returned said she will get it cleaned as soon as possible. It has now been another week and five days...the problem is still there. I complained once again for the health risk, she told us to leave if it was a hazard and go someone to stay. She has told us she can't find someone to clean it, so she is asking us to clean it up for a discount on our rent... I believe we are not responsible for having to clean it up. We have had to tolerate the smell already and have gotten sick from the bacteria of our own sewage, our washer and dryer are down there; laundry was not an option for the smell.
Sadly it had not been the first time it had flooded in the basement, this would be the third time.

Do I have any legal actions or anything to make my landlord understand that, making your tenants live in such conditions is uncalled for. There are broken windows, broken pipes, lawn never mowed for we can't mow it, no lawn mower. I pay 600 a month plus electric, and see now results in fixing anything breaking down. Stairs are collapsing to get to the door, stink bugs get in every corners of the house threw broken door, and none of this was caused by us at all; it was previously like this. Now I understand I knew a few things were now perfect in this house, but I believe for paying so much money it can be fixed up?

What do I do? If anyone has any answers or direction I can take. I"m just tired of asking and asking to have something more livable and only getting the run around; is she in breach of anything? I live in PA so if anyone knows the laws or actions I can take. Please....Im desperate!

Thank you, Hailey.

Answer
You cannot "force" them to fix things, but you can be relieved of any duty to pay rent until they do. Unfortunately, if it is bad enough, you can also be administratively evicted from a condemned building (as opposed to judicially evicted under complaint by the landlord), so you'd need a new place to live.

What electric lawn mower should I buy?

I'm buying a new house with 1/2 acre of lawn. There are some moderate hills, so I would want a model that is self-propelled.

Answer
hey, i wouldnt recomend using a electric lawn mower, specially seeing as its half an acre of lawn, i would suggest getting a fuel powered one. it depends alot on your budget and if you want to do any gardens on the side aswell, but i own a semi pro lawnmower make called hayter, they are by far the most reliable lawnmower that you can get that is just normal and it will last you for years and years, my dad owns one and has owned it for 8 years and still not had a thing wrong wi it. mines 3 years old and is fine and the one at my work is over 10 years and still hasnt going wrong with it. other then that try just get a wee toro, kubota, ransoms, honda or john deere mower, hope this helps :D

Which walk-behind lawn mower has the largest blade / cutting area?

Neerdowell

I need a new lawn mower, as both my riding mower and push mower are requiring too many trips to the repair shop to stay running. I can't afford a new riding mower, but I hate the small cutting area that a walk-behind mower usually offers. Is there a walk-behind lawn mower out there that has an extra large blade that provides a much larger cutting area?
Okay, I guess I should've said consumer grade walk-behind mower. If I could afford a commercial grade walk-behind mower, I would be able to afford a consumer grade riding mower, which I can't.

Answer
There are several brands of lawn mowers that have a 22" cutting area. That is about as large as you will find on a standard push lawn mower. From there, they go down to 21, 20, and even 17". You can find one of the 22" mowers at Home Depot or Lowe's or some other store like that. To get any larger than that would require that you buy an industrial mower or professional grade mower, which as you said you can't afford.

I'm going to purchase a lawn tractor with my tax refund. I do not need much, my lawn is only 0.5 acres. I would also like to use a snow blade to clear my drive, which is small and flat. I know they aren't the real deal, but would I really need more than the tractors found at Home Depot or Lowes? I see that the Cub Cadets have Kohler engines compared to the Briggs found in the John Deeres. Any suggestions?

Answer
I have been looking at Sears tractors. It's like a 4500 series,21 hp Kohler or Briggs.(46" deck). I've always had good luck with Briggs engines. I have a Murray tractor with a 11 hp. Briggs that is 28 years old. This was the last of the old cast iron engines. I don't know how much snow you are going to push, the main problem is traction. I had to make a set of chains to fit my tires, and got along. I know the old time Kohler engines were good. I've had a couple of welders with Kohler engines. Parts are pricey. I think all these new engines are throw away anyway. It cost so much for parts, you can buy a new engine cheaper.

I personally don't like the looks of the cadet. Must be the color combination.

Good Luck

middle blade on 3 bladed lawn tractor will not move, help?

Q. I have a Murray 46" 3 blade tractor. I changed the blades, which I have done 5 times before. After tightening, I started mower, engaged blades and heard noise and engine cutoff. Looked under and played with blades and middle blade is frozen. I can't figure out whats wrong.Tractor runs fine, everytime blades are engaged it cuts off. Help please.

Answer
Each blade is connected to a spindle assembly which you know.
There is a upper bearing and a lower which are sealed. So that means there are 2 per spindle. You bearing has failed and hence the reason the blade will not spin.

You have to remove the deck and unbolt the spindle assembly. And remove the bearings. A socket with a mallet should work. Its pretty straight forward once its apart. At this point if it were me I would check all of them! Even though it a suppose "sealed" bearing. Its nothing more than a rubber dust cap. With care you can pop out the rubber cap and replace the grease. Just be careful not to tear it! However, the spindle that locked up you need to replace the bearings. You can get replacement bearings at tractor supply. They run around 10-12 bucks each.

No problem Polar :)

To get any larger than that would require that you buy an industrial mower or professional grade mower, which as you said you can't afford.

i have a poulan xt pxt12538 lawn tractor from home depot?

SHEEPDOG

i want a mulch block kit and i found one by looking on google but i don't remember where i saw it and i can't find it again. also, no-one seems to know anything about this mower since it was made for home depot and they are worse than useless about any parts or accessories. i would prefer a bagger but the price is too much so i would settle for a mulch block kit. any one have any ideas where i can find stuff for this tractor ?

Answer
This tractor is the worse tractor they sell by far. I work for Home Depot and to my knowledge, they don't make a mulch kit for this mower. If you get one for the Ariens mower of the same size deck, it will fit your deck. That would be the best rout to go. You can find them on their web site.
